    I've been using Canon since 1972 when I purchased the F1 as a young man. Got into DSLR with 5D about 2005 and others cameras and lenses on the way. I've had my eye on the F2.8 70-200 since always but had primes and zooms that covered the range and the expense was also a factor. But happy days this week I picked up a second hand one for $1200 AUD or about $800 USD and its a gem. I use it with a lightweight monopod because it does get heavy. A couple of shots were a little soft but were excellent after running through Topaz AI. Truly a lovely lens.

    I've said it for years! I couldn't agree with you more! The 70-200mm is hands down my ALL-Time favorite portrait lens. I use the EF variant with my R5 and love it. It may be a little weightier than the RF equivalent, but I prefer the build of the EF. The 85mm is a wonderful lens as well. RIght now though, we've been using the RF 28-70 and this thing is slowly starting to become my go-to for portraits and everything else.

A lens I kept after selling my Canon version simply because I liked the Tamron better. I shoot theatre stuff. Headshots I still use my Canon 5d MkII with the 70.200. Production shots, dress rehearsals and performances, I use the Sony A7III with the Tamron 24-70 2.8. Still make a few bucks.

    I’m so thankful for your honest view on this topic. I know, you might get a bit sharper pics with the RF-glass, but this glass is toplevel under all circumstances, and did anyone ever get critics for using this instead of an RF? Most likely not.

    • @premiumlightacademy
      @premiumlightacademy  Рік тому +1

      Dear James, the Canon 5DSR is my favorite old dinosaur as well! I don't usually dabble in the Sigma lenses because I'm just a huge canon snob. When folks look at lenses with a very wide aperture (F1.4) something to consider is that you're looking at a razor thin margin of critical focus. You shoot a portrait at F1.4, and one eye is going to be in focus while the other eye is already falling out of focus. It makes things a little too easy to just blow focus all together. In short, I think your 135F2 will blow the Sigma out of the water every day.

    Nice video, you use a EF 70-200mm IS version, but i still use the EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L USM without IS on my Canon 1D X Mark II, it's super sharp, so i see no reason to upgrade this lens, it still is a robust workhorse, the only lens i have that is sharper is the EF 135mm F/2.0, In the studio i mostly use the 70-200mm in combination with the EF 24-70mm F/2.8 L USM Mark I

  • @LyndonPatrickSmith
    @LyndonPatrickSmith Рік тому +1

    Agree with almost everything you’ve said here, but the point of an 85 prime vs 2.8 zoom is not sharpness, it’s light gathering capacity. You gain 1-1/3, 2, or 2-1/3 stops depending on which EF 85 you choose. 8:37

    I have had one for 15 years now, made beautiful photos with it and now on my R6 it's a better fit than on crop. It gives flexibility when you can't get close, still plenty sharp and it's a good work horse that can take a beating. That being said, for the really special stuff I prefer something a bit wider or the 85/1.2 for the bokeh.

    Seems a lot of trouble to go to in Dec 22, to showcase a lens that was discontinued by Canon in March 21. By the comments, the people this reached are predominantly those who've owned it for years and enjoy being told they made a good decision. In 2023, buy the RF 20-200 f2.8, or the RF 135 f1.8, 85 f1.2 for a portrait primes.

This is the ONLY difference I can find in these 2 lenses. And I can’t seem to find another one that says 1.4 on the side by the button.

    Great video! One thing I think is important to say, is that the version you are talking about is the IS mkii. There is an older 2001 version, which was the first 70-200 f2.8 with IS. The mkii is said to be a little bit sharper, but it's more expensive too. Another thing to mention, as an user of an RP camera all the lenses I have are EF ones, used with an adapter. I think buying EF lenses is much cheaper and still a very good quality option for those like me that don't have so much money to buy L RF lenses. Nowadays, an RF 70-200 lens is so much expensive than a version like the one you have.

There are lots better lenses for portraits, but there's no denying the 70-200s will get you paid. Sigh - I'm ordering one, as I know it will help my clients sell their wares. The lenses that I find bring out the humanity in faces the best are the 24-105 f/4 L, the 135 F/2, the 35 F/1.4s, and the 50 and 85 1.2s. Ah yes. The magic EF to RF converter that adds a stop of light.

  • @Scab5679
    @Scab5679 Рік тому +2

    just a correction: no lens is picking up any extra stop because of the EF-RF converter. It is just a flange distance converter with added electronics so the body can talk to the lens.

    You have the IS version. The non IS version is a lot cheaper and its exactly the same on a tripod.

      Hi Dee, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Not everyone has a mirrorless body, or even mirrorless lenses if they do.
      DSLRs didn't disappear when they're discontinued. Millions of photographers still own and use them.
      We try to be inclusive of photographers of every budget. If you just want the newest tech, there are hundreds of copy and paste channels shilling shiny gear they've never actually shot with.

    The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is pricier than the latest EF version, but it’s only three-quarters the length (at 70mm) and two-thirds the weight - and that doesn’t include the extra length and weight of the EF mount adapter. Those are massive advantages for the new RF lens1. The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is also more compact than the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L III USM at just 5.75″ (146mm) long and 2.35lbs (1070g)2. The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM has image stabilization which is a big plus3. In terms of image quality, there is not much difference between the two lenses. Both are excellent optically3

    Opinions will vary on this one greatly. I got rid of my 70-200 and adapted a Nikon 105 f2 DC and a Nikon 180mm f2.8 D to my Canon R. These two lenses crush the Canon 70-200 for portraits. I can only use manual focus with them I find that I don't need autofocus to take portraits.

    You're talking about the f2.8L IS, but then you show pictures of the IS II, then you show the price of the IS III 😂 make you're mind up, which one are you talking about?

    But if you compare it to consumer zooms like Sigma, then - yes, Canon is better.
