hi dash! the whistling sound is produced by wind flowing over a very sharp angle (imagine a recorder or some other wind instrument), so it's important to have a sharp, clean edge around the holes you drill. i've done these before in clay and it's a huge and terrifying sound when you get it just right!

Excellent video! Ancient chinese military science had three types of arrow: whistling arrow, arrow whistle, and fire arrow whistle. The arrow whistle having larger sounding features was louder than whistling arrow. Military signalling relied upon the arrow whistle or fire arrow whistle. Failure to obey the arrow whistle was punishable by death. Its a clever way to let massed archers know where to concentrate their arrows.
The ancient version of the instinctual fear of the crack of supersonic projectiles passing nearby. I guess the concept of suppressing fire had always been a thing. They can't threaten your dudes when they're too afraid to peek from their shields. Giving the brawlers time to safely close the distance and engage. Cool stuff

I wonder how a flat, leaf-shaped thingy, that is put right to the flat side of a leaf-shaped arrowhead and in a way that allows it to vibrate as it flies through the air would sound. You know, kind of similar how a Clarinette or a Saxophone produces its sound. It probably would give more of a snarring or humming noise or a whistle with a snarring tinge. Could be pretty nerve-wrecking, if it works. PS: I suggest making the rim of that hole into the lead shot as sharp and rectangular to the surface as possible to increase the intensity of the sound.

Thanks so much my friend, I really appreciate it, it’s so fun to share and it’s genuinely an absolute blast to do it. So glad you enjoy watching, and no haha, just plain American (but Californian so maybe a bit cooler 😂)
The biggest different in the sound is the angle of the hole in the material and the wind angle. Also it's a question of speed. There are a hand full of "right" speeds to make the loudest sound. So the same arrow can work on one bow but not on another or has different sounds.
Hey Dash - There are some UA-cam singers like Malukah and Peter Hollens, who layer their own voice over their voice, to get a sound of singing in harmony with just themselves. Maybe, if you found out how they do that, you could do the same thing to the sound of the whistling projectiles, so that we'd have an idea of what it would sound like to have 20/ 50/ 100 whistling shots zip by?
@ one of the theoretical uses for the shot wasn’t for direct fire, but to disrupt mounted cavalry/chariots. Horses needed to be trained not to be spooked by load noises and didn’t become common practice until gunpowder. If you could get them loud enough, you could easily see how you could spook a cavalry charge
Good content, have you tried drilling the hole at an angle, I would be interested in this, it is often the case with whistling arrows? Some of the slings leads that are found are somewhat flattened, which also creates a noise. With basket slings that are not made in the Balearic style (split pouch), it sometimes helps to place the stone upright in the pouch. It doesn't seem intuitive but it is better and makes a cleaner release. Congratulations to the maker of the wool sling beautiful piece, by the way.
Thank you, very interesting and great observations. I will have to try that out. It’s crazy those little micro adjustments can make really big differences. Thank you
A buddy of mine bought some whistling arrowheads that we played around with. He had a crossbow he sometimes shot with, and put one of the whistlers on a bolt. The crossbow shot it so fast it didn’t produce any sound
@ it’s interesting to note that though that every whistling arrowhead I’ve seen had a pocket of space between the holes. Even the ones I bought with broadheads had the whistling part behind the head instead of through it. But they also didn’t work that well
Slinger Sam: Maximus Ganicus, what are you doing out there? Maximus Ganicus: I'm carving something on a bullet. Slinger Sam: What are you craving? Maximus Ganicus: I'm carving "Maximus Ganicus." Slinger Sam: Why? Maximus Ganicus: It's part of a cunning plan, sir. Slinger Sam: Of course it is. Maximus Ganicus: You know how they say that somewhere there's a bullet with your name on it? Slinger Sam: Yes? Maximus Ganicus: Well, I thought that if I owned the bullet with my name on it, I'll never get hit by it. Cause I'll never shoot myself... I think your right enmass whistling shot or arrows would be far more terrifying than just one or two on their own. The lead shot would probably be more efficient as you have very little modification to make to the original projectile. You'd probably need an entirely new arrow head to make a whistling arrow. Great video all around. I'd definitely not like being on the receiving end of either.
Haha that logic tracks for maximusgainicus!!! Indeed, having a slew of projectiles in the air hissing and whistling, especially when you cannot see them would be truly impactful and frightening
I started playing the Witcher 3, and although its not a game i normally would play im actually really enjoying it. A bit of a learning curve in how to use potions etc, but it certainly is a game that youll spend hours and hours and not even scratch the services of how big the game is.
That’s awesome! It truly is a masterpiece. The story and the characters is what truly sold me. The world is amazing but everyone and every quest a story and conclusion which is crazy
Whistling missiles were useful for sentries to signal an enemy approaching without blowing a horn or a gong of some type. Nice one, though I think your arrow designs need more work to compete with the sling shot.
I've seen & heard actual whisting shots before and I must admit that (to me), the slingers would def make me piss my pants more so than the arrows. Now, if you made a whistling shot that hit the "brown note"?... I'm just saying. Hehe Btw - love the videos! Keep it up!
Haha that would be quite the feat….i think it may just induce the “brown note” on its own. But for sure the “unknown” of not seeing the projectile would also add to the fear…also hundreds of them 😂
I can give you first hand experience on this one. Back in 1994 when I was 18, I was grouse hunting on my Grandfather's land. All of a sudden, I heard a sound, hard to describe it as more of a fast hissing sound, and then it smacked into a tree near me. Someone shot at me, with I assume was a rifle. I didn't have a heck of a lot of time to think about it, because several more shots followed the first one. I can tell you that I hit the ground as fast as I could and ended up staying behind a big rock for a few minutes. The rounds all made a fast, hissing sound but it was the sound of them hitting the trees near me that was really terrifying. I stayed there for a while. I found out later on, one of the neighbors to my Grandfather was a bit mentally unbalanced and didn't like people near his land, let alone on it. But trust me, the sound of lead moving fast past you is definitely something that will make you hit the ground.
Just an idea, the whistling effect should be louder when the holes point slightly towards the flight direction, if you drill more canted towards the tip on the arrows it might be more pronounced. Pretty sure that way the holes also don't have to be all the way through.
@@dashrendar5320 There likely would be one specific way to do it that produces the best results, also depending on if the arrow has lots of spin or not. Just thinking of how you produce a whistling sound from a bottle or shell casing it can vary in loudness a lot depending on a few degrees of difference in the tilt. Probably would need to drill a dozen arrows or so to find out.
That was so cool. I could imagine it being pretty insane being behind a shield from a volley of slingers with whistle shot. How costly were the sinkers ? Looks like a good alternative to lead shot
At around 4:27 the top two pieces of shot in that picture are shaped differently than the others. More like an acorn than a lemon. I wonder if that was on purpose or just an accident of corrosion/damage. If you were to cast some shaped like an acorn, how would they fly? Would the shape matter? Hmmmmmmm... This is a fun video!
That was actually done just though impact damage. It would appear that making slight tweaks to the shape can help amplify the sound as well. Also glad you enjoyed it, this was crazy fun to do as well
Some of those sounds are fun even just over the mic. There was one Lead shot that sounded like a jet when slowed down. The whistle mixed with the whoosh of the arrow would be a bit scarier to me lol. I love that sound. I may have to start doing this if I can to the next arrows I craft. Though I'm curious where do you get your arrow tips from or do you make them? Also what is your draw length? I know you said the bow was 32", but I was just curious if you were pulling back that far, since you're only about an inch taller than me, but my draw is only 28". Just thought it crazy that you'd have 4" on me. (Yes, that sounds dirty lol.)
Yeah, for sure, I just love the sound of the deep thud when it hits the wood. As for the draw, it really is because the anchor point is not to my cheek. It’s behind the ear. The arrows I use are about like 36 inches, the red ones, with the bodkin tips. So it really is just a super deep draw.
the one arrow (and presumably a more specifically crafted type of arrow would sound even better) sounded more intimidating to me in the vid, that said you don't want your enemy taking cover from arrows as much as you would sling shot. slings were mostly used to cover your troops advance and harry the enemy, plenty of cultures were happy to use bows and arrows as their primary weapons, why would you give them warning for an minor phycological advantage when their friends screams from minor or severe arrow wounds will sound way worse than a whistle ahead of either projectile...
I wonder if they used the principle of how a flute works buy blowing over the hole 🤔. Im abit of a geek when it comes to sound and what certain frequencies can do. Sound was used so much in trying to intimidate the enemy, i.e when you hear drums coming it must of made the army seem bigger than what it was. The horn was used to same effect. In those days a more primitive army most certainly would of heard that and not knowing how it was done the only conclusion was probably magic to them. Very interesting video that shows how much psychology knowledge was used to great effect.
Man not seeing the shot and just hearing the whistle for sure just creates a knee jerk reaction to duck. Even if you don’t think it’s magic the self preservation instinct alone just makes you drop
That would be really cool, I know I can get a better sound and I just need to try more variables, but this was just a broader base test. I may try it again with clay.
@ love it man. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. Experimentation is in my opinion the funnest part! Who knows what you may discover! Goodluck bro. 😎
@@dashrendar5320you should do a tutorial (if you havent already) to make an inexpensive sling to mess around with. I understand the concept but how do you choose dimensions and all that?
German youtuber Joerg Sprave did test these lead shots about 8 years ago for Dr. John Reid. Its sound highly depends on the diameter, depth and sharp edges of the hole. This is the video and around the 14:12 Minute mark you can clearly hear the sound: ua-cam.com/video/7vJBKfQFD8I/v-deo.html
I don’t think you should count out whistling arrows just yet. Might require a deep dive into either sources describing them and/or if there are any actual surviving examples. Granted this is a guess, but I think fletching and/or something added to the shaft may be more important to creating a loud whistle or other disruptive sounds than the arrowhead itself
I feel like keeping up with ancient man when it comes to sensory observation would be very difficult for most of the population. I feel like hunters, traditional hunters or even modern tribal societies would do well. However most modern people would for sure not be able to track and hear as well as ancient man

@@dashrendar5320 The comedy, characters and writing you put into your videos (particularly the self awareness and self deprecation -- you sure you're not part British or Australian??) is also, *cool as hell!* 😀 (We all really appreciate it!)
Very true. I am certain with more experimentation I could get better results than simply drilling a hole in a bodkin point for sure
Hey Dash -
There are some UA-cam singers like Malukah and Peter Hollens, who layer their own voice over their voice, to get a sound of singing in harmony with just themselves.
Maybe, if you found out how they do that, you could do the same thing to the sound of the whistling projectiles, so that we'd have an idea of what it would sound like to have 20/ 50/ 100 whistling shots zip by?
Oh that’s a super cool idea! I will see if I can refine and isolate the sound then overlay it. Thad would be incredibly cool to do and see
@@dashrendar5320
Can't wait to hear the results!
Cheers, mate.

Score one for slinger sam! Feel better my dude!
Thank you, my friend. Feeling better already.
The Gauls were a comparable civilization that the Romans wiped out during their migration.
Indeed. Advanced and made great strides in metal working among other developments
I want to say Jeorg Sprave succeeded in creating a whistling lead shot.
Indeed. He did an amazing job, I got some good whistling but could not capture it as well as I could hear it. Still got some decent whistles though 😂
Thank you
The most terrifying thing was watching you drill lead without a respirator mask
A buddy of mine bought some whistling arrowheads that we played around with. He had a crossbow he sometimes shot with, and put one of the whistlers on a bolt. The crossbow shot it so fast it didn’t produce any sound
Hahahaha yeah there needs to be a balance with the speed for it to work properly I believe
Maximus Ganicus: I'm carving "Maximus Ganicus."
Slinger Sam: Why?
Indeed, having a slew of projectiles in the air hissing and whistling, especially when you cannot see them would be truly impactful and frightening
ua-cam.com/video/y8wdynZ0iWg/v-deo.html Blackadder goes Forth, Episode 1
Id rather have the whistler being hurld in my direction than the quiet ones
Haha that’s a understandable position
I started playing the Witcher 3, and although its not a game i normally would play im actually really enjoying it. A bit of a learning curve in how to use potions etc, but it certainly is a game that youll spend hours and hours and not even scratch the services of how big the game is.
That’s awesome! It truly is a masterpiece. The story and the characters is what truly sold me. The world is amazing but everyone and every quest a story and conclusion which is crazy
@dashrendar5320
Yes, certainly a learning curve for me but one I'm injoying because of the story you don't get with a game like CoD lol
Whistling missiles were useful for sentries to signal an enemy approaching without blowing a horn or a gong of some type. Nice one, though I think your arrow designs need more work to compete with the sling shot.
I agree. I was gonna try and tweak it a bit. I am sure there is more I could do to properly create a better whistling Arrow
Awesome video!
Thank you my friend 💪🏹🪨
I've seen & heard actual whisting shots before and I must admit that (to me), the slingers would def make me piss my pants more so than the arrows. Now, if you made a whistling shot that hit the "brown note"?... I'm just saying. Hehe
Btw - love the videos!
Man yeah that sounds brutal. Even hearing it imperfectly on the camera gives a bit of a deep gut check.
Just an idea, the whistling effect should be louder when the holes point slightly towards the flight direction, if you drill more canted towards the tip on the arrows it might be more pronounced. Pretty sure that way the holes also don't have to be all the way through.
Yeah I did not want to destroy too many arrowheads but I for sure think there would be a much better way to craft it
@@dashrendar5320 There likely would be one specific way to do it that produces the best results, also depending on if the arrow has lots of spin or not.
Yeah I can only imagine. The fact of not being able to see them makes it crazy, they were not bad. A 25 pack of 3 oz for like $25
At around 4:27 the top two pieces of shot in that picture are shaped differently than the others.
Also glad you enjoyed it, this was crazy fun to do as well
the video as always was fun and informative, but it's time you gave the people the info they need...haircare and beardcare regimen.
Hahaha man I don’t have one sorry. But glad you enjoyed the video
Cool episode
Glad you enjoyed it 💪🪨
Both. Both is the right answer 😂
Hahaha I would say that is a correct response 😂
Actually it is OSB, oriented strand board..not particle board, which is essentially sawdust and glue..it'll dull your new sawblade in a heartbeat...
Ha good catch! Yes you are Correct
Brilliant.
Haha man that would be an amazing opportunity to meet him! He is so great
the one arrow (and presumably a more specifically crafted type of arrow would sound even better) sounded more intimidating to me in the vid, that said you don't want your enemy taking cover from arrows as much as you would sling shot. slings were mostly used to cover your troops advance and harry the enemy, plenty of cultures were happy to use bows and arrows as their primary weapons, why would you give them warning for an minor phycological advantage when their friends screams from minor or severe arrow wounds will sound way worse than a whistle ahead of either projectile...
Testing before microphones, having to be that guy down range.
Haha that’s what servants were for 😂
Hey brother, sounds like you need some honey and lemons to cure that cold. Great stuff though
Thanks my dude! Feel better and ready to go but yeah that one lingered for a bit haha
Awesome video, but someones really gotta check their tea kettle cause it keeps going off
Thanks man, and it really did sound like that with the arrows 😂
Glorious
Thank you my friend 💪🪨
Hope you get better soon dude.
Thanks my dude, feeling better already
@dashrendar5320
Good point, as in even today when a soldier hears the sound of the gattling gun from a jet they drop for cover.
Your blue background that says shoot big bows and need out. Can I get that on a shirt anywhere?
You know I was actually thinking of making a shirt to sell…but have not done that yet….maybe soon
@ I would buy one that says that
What if you could make a projectile scream like Aztec/Mayan death whistle. 😮
What about trying to drill the holes at angles instead of perpendicular?
That would be really cool, I know I can get a better sound and I just need to try more variables, but this was just a broader base test. I may try it again with clay.
@ love it man. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. Experimentation is in my opinion the funnest part! Who knows what you may discover! Goodluck bro. 😎
I'm thinking even with no holes they sound pretty nasty flying by
Haha yeah they really do. The rocks have that really deep hum as well that is just terrifying
@@dashrendar5320you should do a tutorial (if you havent already) to make an inexpensive sling to mess around with. I understand the concept but how do you choose dimensions and all that?
Need a hot baking soda bath soak bruvz
Ha thanks man. Much better now. Was just like 2 or 3 days of no voice
Very cool. I will check that out.
Both
That’s fair 😂
I don’t think you should count out whistling arrows just yet. Might require a deep dive into either sources describing them and/or if there are any actual surviving examples.
Granted this is a guess, but I think fletching and/or something added to the shaft may be more important to creating a loud whistle or other disruptive sounds than the arrowhead itself
Sounds like you had the plague😂
Hahah yeah sounded like it 😂
I gonna get a SlingMaster3000
Haha can’t go wrong with a slingmaster3000
If you had to pick one khopseh or kukri and why?
Oh man Let me think about that
Shoots or loose arrows not fire 🤔
Haha mistakes happen 😂
Would they ever use projectiles at the same time? Would it affect the aim / damage?
as in like a shotgun spread? Like multiple shot in one sling?
@dashrendar5320 , yes as it would be interesting to know if it affected the range etcetc?
Oh man. I feel like getting I think anywhere with speed would be difficult, but it could be fun to try.
@dashrendar5320 thank you for your speedy reply!! , just an interesting thought.👍
😊
What do you think guys. Is the average modern person deaf and blind compared to the average person living in ancient times or not?
I feel like keeping up with ancient man when it comes to sensory observation would be very difficult for most of the population. I feel like hunters, traditional hunters or even modern tribal societies would do well. However most modern people would for sure not be able to track and hear as well as ancient man
@@dashrendar5320 Yeah that's what I was thinking. Thanks to audio visual overload we all became sensorically numb.
