To watch me apply for the Capital One Venture X and Amex Gold, check out this playlist: shorturl.at/cijnF What do you think about this 2 credit card setup? 🤔
If you are going to use the Gold Uber and restaurant credits anyway it's a solid lineup and gives you 2 different brands of points, but for me either Savor paired with the X makes more sense even though the remote possibility exists that both could be frozen if there is any fraudulent activity.
The free authorized users is such a nice perk of the Venture X. This can definitely be a good setup as long as you're ok earning two different points systems. Nice video Spencer!
I completely agree! I think it's important to earn points from multiple lenders, especially if you can combine them with the same transfer partners in the end. However, that's coming from someone who likes to apply for a ton of different credit cards, so take that for what it's worth. Thanks for watching Josh!
The Venture X is a fantastic card that makes everything simple. I recently got approved and could not be happier. Looking forward to seeing more lounges and local partner soon.
As Spencer says, it really depends how you use your cards. I have the Venture X and Savor One. Yes, it doesn't give as much value as the Amex gold, but I wouldn't be able to take advantage of its credits as I don't uber much (maybe once or twice a year, and if I travel, it's all in the same month so that doesn't really count), so that's instantly a $100-110 fee. I also don't eat out much. So for me it makes sense to use the Savor One.
I'm glad you agree! I never want people to think this is an end all be all setup for everyone because everyone's setup should be different depending on their goals and spending habits. Just like you talked about here, the Savor One can be a much better compliment to the Venture X if you can't get value from the Amex Gold credits. Thank you for the insightful comment!
Yeah, i live in a small town and have the gold amex. Def not the best. I did get the 90k points, so im thinking of using the 140k points i have and get the savior card in a few months
Because Amex gold gets you through the door into amex hotels collection, amex offers page, 60,000-90,000 point signup bonus, customer service, travel protections, and it's a very pretty card to flex since it's gold not blue.
I think that this would be a great duo to use for the multipliers and value you get from your main categories! But just to explore the other side, I've found it better to stick with one main point ecosystem since you can focus all your spend on one system (like the Chase Trifecta for example) and have more points to move around. Like you mentioned, I think the C1VX + Savor One would be a fantastic combo, and it'd be great for those who do a bit more traveling than the average person! You're really building up that credit card in your arsenal Spencer 👍!
It all depends on your goals and spending habits, that’s for sure! I’d argue that if you have a low amount of spend, sticking with one lender is the most ideal. But if you’re someone who either spends a lot or has a lot of cards with different lenders already, this setup could be more ideal. But again, that’s coming from someone who doesn’t value Capital One’s partners as highly as others which is why I’d like having access to both. This is a really insightful comment though, so thank you Stan!
I spend a lot on dining ($20,000 a year) so an extra 20,000 of dining points makes sense for me. Since I spend the $10 ubereats and $10 grubhub credit every month, my net expense is $10 for an additional 20,000 points. Plus I get access to the amex offers portal and hotels collection. Amex gold is an easy YES from me.
That’s a great way to put it Matt. The Amex Platinum card can be great if you’re true city folk (like in NYC or something) but being in Austin, this combo works perfectly fine for me.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial yeah. You can make this duo work in suburbia; it’s a bit more work on the AmEx gold credits, but somewhat doable. Far easier in cities though
Hey Spencer, you really broke thieve two cards down so well. You articulated every strong point regarding both cards. You make wanting these two cards so attractive. The con about the Capitol One card is they ding your inquiries across all three bureaus. That sucks. The con about the gold card is no cash back option with it not being worth it. Also the Uber credit is cool if you don’t have a car like I do, but in that case a lot of times I’d rather take the train or bus. However, since you pay the annual fee that’s 10- 12 rides per year take you can take in comfort. Still pretty cool.
I really appreciate you saying that! These cards can be really solid in combination with each other for the right individuals. But it does suck they pull all credit bureaus, especially if you’re denied. And you’re right about the Gold card too! Having no cash back option makes it really important that you ensure you’re okay with using all your points for travel. But like we said, these cards can be a powerful combo if you get positive value from the credits and use all of your points for travel. Thank you for the insightful comment!
That’s great to hear! I think it could be a really solid duo for those that are open to accumulating points with multiple lenders. I’ve had a lot of success doing so myself! Thank you for the kind words.
🤔 I never thought of using these two as a duo, but it could make sense since they share some travel partners. Now I can understand why you ent for the Venture X instead of the Amex Platinum. Lol, team cash back definitely will have heartburn over those cash back redemption rates. I was strictly team cash back until I learned about the outsized value that can be obtained through travel. I’m definitely noticing the difference in editing btw. Very clean and minimalistic. I’m not so certain that Amex will appreciate this video 🤣🤣. Maybe your special guest at the end will soften their hearts though 🤣
It's an interesting thought exercise if anything! I realize that the Savor One is technically a better pair for the Venture X, but if you're someone like myself who has other cards covering my other main spending categories, these cards work really well in combination with each other, especially since you can effectively combine Amex and Cap1 points with their transfer partners. This one definitely wasn't tailored to those on team cash back, but I'm hoping it'll get them thinking a bit! The world of travel can be super valuable, that's for sure. And thanks for the compliments on the editing! I'm lucky to have a good team helping me out, so I'm excited to keep working on it over time. Odin will make all things right lol. But in reality, at least I'm including an Amex card here! They'll appreciate that I'm sure 🤷♂️ Thank you for watching as always my man!
If you are able to consistently utilize the Credits on both the AMEX Gold & Cap One Venture X then your effective fee on this duo is CRAZY LOW, plus the multipliers when you combine these cards are really really good. Also, great point about having access to more travel partners, because of both point ecosystems with American Express & Capital One. Great video here Spencer!
You’re 100% right Matt! It all comes down to effective annual fees with any credit card at the end of the day. If you’re someone comfortable with managing multiple point ecosystems, I think this setup could be really solid! Thank you for being here once again Matt!
I agree with you 100% Spencer! Only think I would add is maybe a Chase duo since you can get a lot of value with Hyatt or one of the Chase partners. This duo definitely belongs in everyone’s setup though! A ton of value here man, great video as always bro! 🙌🏻
I appreciate that Edras! I think the difference between those two duos is that the Chase duo is more for less frequent travelers while this duo is more for those who like a bit more luxury travel. I say that because of all the added travel benefits and protections the Venture X gives you compared to the Chase duo. But I think there’s an argument to have both duos.. I know I like them both!!
personally closing my gold card next year (annoying to force use credits). CiC, CiU, CSP, CF, CCC + VX covers everything i need. will eventually add the CFF and probably CFU just because. i’ll definitely miss amex tho! just not worth the headache right now.
That’s completely understandable! You can get a lot of value from other cards rather than the Gold card. It’s working great for me right now, but if it got to the point where I was forcing myself to use the credits, I’d close it too. No reason to pay $250 a year for a card that you’re not getting value from. It sounds like you got a great setup though!!
same as your case minus VX, since using the portal to book hotels, on some hotels, they don't honor your built up hotel status. Nah on the gold card for me, too. Different people have different spending habits. Some have chase cards that work for them, some have Amex, etc with Citi, CO, BoA, Barclays, US Bank, etc etc.
@@rodelmedia6184 Just like you said, everyone's setup will be different since everyone has different spending habits and goals. While these cards may not be for you, it's good that you already have a solid setup that you're happy with! That's all that matters really.
Interesting perspective. I would consider the Venture X if I was more sure about approval and if they had more lounges or even partnered with an airline for lounges. Good stuff Spencer
Thanks Sledge! As a simple card that’s easy to get positive value of every year even with just one trip, I feel like the Venture X is a solid compliment to any travel setup, especially for beginners to the luxury travel game. The Gold card is just a no-brainer for so many that it’s an easy recommendation for those who naturally get value from the credits. Thanks for watching man!
Great video. I was debating whether to pair my Venture X with Savor One or Amex Gold. I don't use Uber a lot so it's one reason that's holding me back. Am I really saving cause if I'm using the credits to offset the Anual Fee, it's forcing me to spend not actually "save." However, I do want to have more options when transferring points to travel partners. Although I don't use Uber, I feel like I can still utilize Amex points as I usually pay when I go out in groups to earn points and have my friends Venmo me. Also, I do spent a lot on groceries. Still have time to think over since I got my Venture X just three months ago.
I agree Kevin! It all depends on your current goals and setup, but this duo would work great for me. Thanks for the kind words man! Looking forward to you getting that Gold card down the line 👀
Spencer your content is superb, I really enjoy your videos. It would be great for you to cover Credit Cards from Credit Unions or even smaller banks. Most credit gurus usually overlook these little guys ! Just a suggestion keep up the great work !
That really means a lot Ridley! And you’re 100% right. Once my upload velocity increases here in the coming months, I’d love to touch on topics (such as CUs) that other creators don’t cover, so thank you for the suggestion man!
This was the EXACT video I was looking for. I have the AMEX Gold & was trying to figure out what card to pair it with. Originally, I was going to get the AMEX Platinum but I like the idea of having access to the AMEX & Capital One networks + AMEX & Visa. Thanks!!
That’s awesome to hear! While this setup isn’t necessarily perfect for everyone, I know it serves me really well and a lot of people have said the same. I’m glad I could help!
I would say the a good trifecta is the venture X, Amex gold, and Citi custom cash card. Most if not all major spending categories covered for most people.
I completely agree. If I could add a card to this, I’d add the custom cash. The one hesitation I’d have with the custom cash is that you need the Citi premier to get the MAX value from the card, but from an earning multiplier perspective, the Custom cash is a great addition.
You’re right about that but I was more talking about how to transfer out to travel partners you need the Citi Premier card. I’d use the Custom Cash for gas in that trifecta personally.
Great video and a solid duo for sure. As is the case with most 2 card setups, one major category is usually missing: gas. I think if you throw in a Citi Custom Cash then you'll be rock solid.
That’s a great point Dallin! The Custom Cash has been an awesome addition to my setup for that exact reason. The one hesitation I’d have with the custom cash is that you need the Citi premier to get the MAX value from the card, but from an earning multiplier perspective, the Custom cash is a great addition.
Great video, I'm actually looking towards this duo at this moment. I already have an Amex Gold + CFU/CFF + BBP, but I'ma swap those out for the Venture X. I'll keep the others in standby unless there's a nice category from the CFF or I need to get more MR points then I'll use the BBP over the VX. I'm considering getting the No AF Hilton Honors card for the SUB as well just build status for Hilton. I do plan to travel domestically
I'm glad to hear you like the setup! It's worked really well for me so far although I do switch back to the CFU here and there when I want more Chase points. You could definitely run the Hilton gambit and accumulate a ton of points that way. If status is what you're after though, I'd just go straight for the Aspire to get Diamond status. But your strategy may be different!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial I don't think I'll go for the aspire, those cards are for ballers lol. First time traveler, so I would prefer to keep the annual fees low, I know the aspire can pretty much pay for itself if you book a super expensive hotel. I'll probably consider it, if I can utilize all the benefits. Also I just got approved for Venture X, so that's really nice
Congrats on the approval! I was just making the suggestion in case you wanted to fast track your way to status. Definitely don't get a card you aren't ready for though! @@RavnessL
Thank you Chase!! I agree with you. Although it isn't the most ideal for everyone, I think it can be really powerful (and simple) for the right person.
Great question! It all comes down to effective annual fees and what point ecosystems you value more. Personally I value Amex's transfer partners higher than I do Capital One's so I like to have access to both ecosystems. Also, my effective annual fee on the Gold card is $10/year since I get the full amount back from the 2 credits that come on it (totaling to $240). However, with the $95 annual fee Savor Card, there are no direct credits to offset that annual fee, and your effective annual fee would be $95 compared to just $10 on the Amex Gold. If you want to stay within Capital One's ecosystem, I would get the no-annual fee Savor One card instead of the $95 annual fee one personally. Take that for what it's worth though!
I have discover card, Apple Card, chase freedom flex and chase sapphire preferred. I’m looking into getting venture x just for the priority pass lounge access. I feel like if I were to get the Amex gold it’s just another card similar to chase freedom flex. Would you recommend the venture x or the one below the venture x since it still gives priory pass but only up to 2 visits a year. Thank you!
That’s a great question and a great setup already! I think it really all comes down to how much effective value you’d get from either cards. For example, if you calculate you’ll have an effective $50 annual fee for the lower tier version (the Venture) compared to -$5 for the Venture X then even though the Venture X has a higher annual fee, it would make more sense. It all comes down to that effective annual fee in my opinion. Since the step down from the Venture X (the Venture) still has a $95 annual fee, you’ll have to see which one gives you better value. The only main difference between the two is the $300 annual travel credit and 10,000 mile anniversary bonus on the Venture X (on top of more travel protections and such). So I’d take every benefit into account before you make that decision. Hopefully that helps get your started though!
The hilton Surpass has a great sign up bonus till 4/5. Has PP with 10 passes a year and some nice benefits and status inside the hilton ecospere and an AF of 95. If you use it the benefits help lower the AF quickly.
That's a solid combo too! In the hypothetical when you only have those cards then you wouldn't do too well outside of the US without a Visa card. Plus the Business Gold is really difficult to get positive value on with it's lack of credits, but this isn't a bad idea! Again, it all comes down to the individual.
Understandable about wanting both travel partners but if u need to book travel and you use capital one portal, that doesn’t bother you have ur points in 2 different spots
Personally I think that can be a positive thing since you have access to more travel partners, but again, that’s likely not the case for everyone. If you’re someone who isn’t comfortable doing that, I’d recommend the Cap1 duo in this case if you’re a fan of their travel partners. The good think about these two cards is that Amex and Cap1 have some of the same partners, so you can effectively combine all of these points together with those travel partners if you needed. Hopefully that makes sense!
For the TSA on the venture x if you get an authorized user, will both of you be able to use it at the same time or is it just for the main card holder 🤔
Great question! It depends on what earning categories you need covered. If you’re looking for a catch-all card, the BBP could compliment the Gold card really well. If you’re looking for a luxury travel credit card, the Platinum could be a great compliment to the Venture X. No matter what, you want to make sure you’ll get positive value from all the credits that come on an annual fee card and that your main earning categories are covered within a point ecosystem that you value highly.
Great question! I think the two duos are for different people to be honest. I think the Chase duo makes a ton of sense if you're someone who doesn't travel very frequently and likes Chase's travel partners the most. However, if you need slightly more luxury perks then this duo could make more sense with everything the Venture X gives you. Personally I have both and will continue to use both, but it all comes down to how much effective value you'll get from both duos. Hopefully that helps a bit!
That’s fair! Except you can use your points (particularly on the Gold) to book hotels. When it comes to status though, you’d need something like the platinum card to get that for you, you’re right about that. But then you wouldn’t have any Visa cards for overseas.. again, this was more of a thought exercise than an end all be all setup, so I like where your head is at!
Both cards, and for that matter both Banks have a missed opportunity for gas spend. Gas is one of the 3 major expenses the average person has along with groceries and restaurants. A gas multiplier would put either card to the next level.
You can't physically combine them into one account with either Cap1 or Amex. However, they have multiple overlapping transfer partners that you can effectively do that with. For example, let's say you have a trip to book with Virgin Atlantic costing 200k Virgin miles... instead of having to have 200k Amex or Cap1 points individually, if you had 100k Amex points and 100k Cap1 miles, you could transfer all of those to your Virgin account and "combine" your points that way. Hopefully that makes sense!
It's definitely one to consider depending on what you find important. Personally, this works super well for me, but that definitely won't be the case for everyone. Thanks for watching Manny!
Great question! It does help build your credit score since it is another credit card account that reports on-time payments, but it does not report a credit utilization since you don't have a credit line on it. There is a way to make it function as more of a normal credit card with a pay over time feature, but I personally have never used that. The Gold card is a charge card by design though, so you're required to pay off the full-balance every month and aren't given a credit limit. So the main thing that does not get reported to the bureaus is a credit utilization. Everything else gets reported as normal. I can't speak for how it functions if you set it to be a pay over time card, but this has been my experience with it using it as it's advertised.
Watching now but damn Spencer, I’m just thrilled to see you living the UA-cam dream. These views are absolutely exploding. Getting better numbers than Brian Jung 😬 No shade to Brian if he reads this. I think this could be a good setup. 🤔 I guess I just always figured to have it all under one ecosystem but it makes sense, I’ve thought to use Chase cards more so I get more value for Hyatt hotels but also use my Gold for groceries etc so you’re right. Hmm. And I have that video coming out soon haha, Venture X + Savor duo.
You're the man Tony! I appreciate the kind words man. I'm just super grateful that the channel is growing the way it is. Definitely a blessing! As for this setup, I agree with you. If you're someone who doesn't want points in multiple ecosystems then this setup isn't for you. But for us enthusiasts who have points with every major lender for the most part, this duo could be really solid. I'm excited to see your vid on the Cap1 duo! I think that's arguably the best one-lender setup out there right now.
I like your videos but I’d have to pass on this setup. A better 2 card setup with the venture x would be the venture x and Citi premier. The premier would have the holy grail of multipliers (dining/groceries/gas) and the venture x covers everything else.
That’s a great setup too! I wanted this to at least spark a conversation rather than it being the end all be all. As I mentioned in the video, this setup is not for everyone, but it can be really powerful depending on who’s using it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Congrats on that! If you're on team travel, the BCP won't give you much value at all compared to the Gold card. But if you want a cash back card, the Gold card won't give you any value.
Was wondering if I wanted to do the Gold + Venture X rather than the savor one+Venture X. I like the look of the Gold (lol) and think using the credits would be easy for me.
Well that's perfect timing I guess! I honestly think this duo makes more sense for me since I also get a lot of value from Amex's credits and prefer their ecosystem over Cap1. Hopefully Cap1 adds some more transfer partners in the near future but I like having access to as many ecosystems as I can.
@@alexalatorre2574 Yeah definitely get one of those. The Credit Community Discord will have plenty of people with those links in it I imagine. I linked that Discord in my watch me apply for the Gold card if you're interested in joining. I don't run it, but I'm a member of it.
To my understanding, as long as you pay for the trip on the Venture X, you should still get the protections. I'm not 100% sure since I don't have personal experience with it yet, but that's my assumption.
Do you live in a big city? I ask that because I’m from a smaller city and am worried I won’t be able to utilize capital ones transfer partners as easily as someone who lives in a city with a bigger airport that as more flight options
That’s a great question! I do live in a big(ish) city.. Austin, Texas. I’d be more worried about getting positive value from the Amex Gold than the Venutre X in this setup if you live in a small town. That being because you’d to have participating restaurant locations close to you on top of Uber/Uber Eats. You’d just have to make sure you easily get value from the credits on both of these cards before applying.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial I’m not from a super small town, I’m from Columbus Ohio. I already have the AMEX gold and am debating heavily between the chase trifecta with the preferred card or just pairing the Gold w the venture X, I’m still extremely undecided.
Any tips on how to get out of the cap 1 bucket. Used them to build my credit and got the quick silver one about a year in a half ago. Fast forward to now with over a 750+ score and they still will notnlet me product change
To be completely honest with you, I have no personal experience with this and wouldn’t know where to start other than what I’ve heard through the grapevine. However, my friend Anthony Venture (on YT) made a video about that exact topic if you wanna check out his vid!
@@woodzy883 Oh nice haha. Glad to hear it came across your radar. Is it just that one card that keeps you stuck in their bucket? I need to watch his video again... I'm unfamiliar with their rules
The venture x travel credit of $300 is that when you book already then u will get $300 credit? Or its automatic that you will get $300 credit? And does it roll over?
Once you pay the Annual Fee, the travel credit can be applied to the purchase that you make on the Travel Portal. I booked a flight before paying the AF, but as soon as I paid the AF amount, the credit was applied on the statement. The credit does not roll over to the next year.
Venture X & Savor One with no annual fee are 100% a better duo and are in the same eco system. Why would the Amex gold be better than a free card from the same company as the Goated venture x?
I assumed a lot of folks would have that opinion! I think I made it pretty clear that this is not the best setup for everyone and that it’s mainly for folks who don’t wanna be tied down to just Capital One, especially if you’re not a fan of their travel partners. I have found a lot of success accumulating points with multiple lenders so I’m comfortable recommending that to folks as well. Especially since multiple lenders have some of the same transfer partners as Cap1. If you’re someone who only wants to use one lender though, the Cap1 duo is super solid!
That could work okay too! The issue with the Capital One Quicksilver is that you can’t transfer those points out to travel partners without a Venture card which would make this setup less ideal. The Gold card’s points are really only good when used for travel which is why it’s a good combo with the Venture X, but if you’re just getting started in the credit card game and use the quicksilver as a catch-all credit card, it could work well! Especially if you end up upgrading that card to the Savor One and then apply for the Venture X down the line. Hopefully that makes sense!
Couldn't the AMEX Gold with the AMEX Blue Business Plus be a better duo since the AMEX BBP could be the 2x catch all card that pool into the MR points for the Gold card?
That’s a great duo as well! I wanted to highlight this one as a different approach to credit card duos, but it’s never a bad idea to get cards from the same lender as long as you’d get better value that way. The BBP is just not as good of a complimentary card to the Gold here when it comes to travel benefits and protections. So for a food/travel/catch-all combo, I like this one better than the Gold/BBP combo personally.
By multipliers they seems nice together, but when trying to align airlines it can be a mess. I'd rather go with Amex Gold and Amex Platinum for frequent business flyers (4+ flights per year) on Delta airlines or a family of 3+ that takes 2 flights per year. Capital One Venture X and Capital One SavorOne are a better pair for the Capital One system. Dinning, groceries, and entertainment on the SavorOne card. Everything else, on the Venture X.
These are all fair points! In this hypothetical situation it's hard to recommend two Amex cards since you won't do too well overseas with those, but in the US the Platinum could be a great compliment to the Gold card for those frequent travelers. And I agree that if you prefer just the Cap1 ecosystem, the Cap1 duo would be better. Personally I would want access to both ecosystems, but that's just me! Great insights in this comment though. Thank you!
If Cap1 adds some better transfers partners like United, delta, and another major hotel chain I’d say it’s definitely worth it. Their travel partners are a little weak. They should at least offer Wyndham Diamond status through their partnership.
I do wish they’d at least add a couple decent hotel partners. I can get by pretty well with their airline partners, particularly with international travel, but it’s tough that they don’t have anything great on the hotel side.
Second 😅 **actually third 😅…. Anyways I don’t have the venture x, but I might apply for it in the future… I had question for you guys in regards to ven x, i remember that at the beginning of 2023 cap1 change its benefits, ‘that no longer provided access to priority restaurant’. what was that benefit about? Did ven x holders had access to free food at priority lounges and now card holders would need to pay for food at priority lounges? 😅can you explain a bit that benefit thanks
Priority Pass restaurants are restaurants in airports that would give you a credit towards your meal (I think in the realm of $25-35 per person up to two people? I don’t recall specifically). It’s helpful in airports/terminals that don’t have a full priority pass lounge or a lounge that’s very busy. Some people really value those restaurants and were quite disappointed to lose access. Others, like myself, never used them so the loss isn’t such a drag. Of course I would have liked to have kept the option! Food is still free in any PP lounge that normally provides it.
I’ve got the Amex gold card and love it, and just got approved for the Venture X today. Super pumped. I was gonna go csp but decided not to. And I was also debating whether to keep my Amex gold card or not but this video made me wanna keep it 🥲
Great video but Savor better than Amex Gold: $95 insteaad of $250, accepted everywhere, don't have to deal with credit burnout like restaurant pickup and eating from plastic containers every month, 4% back on entertainment, 10% Uber and Uber One status, yes Gold has 3x back on flights but so do many other cards like Ink Preferred and don't get travel benefits, and one login to deal with. And no 4% on groceries from Target and Walmart with Amex Gold lol.
I think that's a better setup for a lot of folks, but I prefer to not be tied down to Capital One and their transfer partners. I think earning points with different lenders can be really solid, but that's not the case for everyone. Good insight though!
I've been doing cash back cards now that the economy is going to shit. Also, because to use it as an emergency fund type of cards with the accumulation I've been building up on my cash back cards. Just wish the Venture X had Delta & United as a travel partner. If they did, it would be deal sealer for me.
That's not a bad strategy! I'm still stockpiling travel miles since I want to book a good amount of trips soon, but what you're describing is the beauty of a cash back setup. Simple and easy to get value from without letting it all stockpile. I agree with you though... I wish Cap1 had some better travel partners for me, but I'm hoping they add them down the line!
I might!! However, I'm not sure how much value it would give me at this point with all the others I have. Maybe I'll add it to at least get some experience with it to share on the channel and who knows, maybe I'll end up really loving it! If Cap1 had better transfer partners I would be way more gung-ho about it.
For the right consumer I’d agree. The effective annual fee is just much higher than the Venture X for the majority of people ($250 compared to -$5). But if you get more value from the added benefits of the CSR outside of the annual travel credit than you do on the Venture X, then that card may make more sense for you!
That would be a super valuable combo as long as you can get positive value from all the credits that come on those cards. For frequent travelers, that setup could be super solid.
I’ve heard good things about it! I’m hoping to get a bit of experience with it myself in the near future. I definitely will be doing so to use my annual travel credit, that’s for sure.
SavorOne 10% cashback UberEats pickup thru 2024. I frequently get an extra $10 to $15 off or extra free items on my pickup orders. Last night I got four meals for 40% off and 10% cash back to my SavorOne 😄😄🎉🎉 I paid $23.73 for $35.33 value food and got 10% cashback $2.37 So net cost on $35.33 of food: $21.36 40% off 😂😂😁😁 2 BIG french dip sandwiches 2 cole slaws 2 large iced teas
To watch me apply for the Capital One Venture X and Amex Gold, check out this playlist: shorturl.at/cijnF
What do you think about this 2 credit card setup?
The Amex Gold and Venture X is my combo. The Venture X is a powerhouse but simple at the same time. The AF is easily justified
I completely agree! It's definitely a solid duo for the right person.
The Venture X is a fantastic card that makes everything simple. I recently got approved and could not be happier. Looking forward to seeing more lounges and local partner soon.
Couldn't agree more! It's been a really solid addition to my wallet and I'm excited to use some more of it's perks in the near future.
The venture x is such a good card. 2x on everything is actually a very decent earn rate. Great video Spencer.
I agree with you Ethan! I've been a big fan of it so far even though I've only had it for a short while. Thanks for watching man!
Uber also offers pick up to-go food and groceries Incase you didn’t know
Yeah, i live in a small town and have the gold amex. Def not the best. I did get the 90k points, so im thinking of using the 140k points i have and get the savior card in a few months
I agree both cards are powerful.
Glad to hear it! They can be really powerful for the right folks.
Should I get the Amex first and the Venture X? Or get both at the same time?
Nice DUO setup. Venture X makes a nice catchall CC & AMEX Gold is a MR earning workhorse. Thanks for the info + video!
Of course Jimmy! While this setup isn’t super ideal for everyone, it’s one that would provide me a ton of value personally!
Valuable content as always Spencer! ❤
I appreciate that!
Why not just pair the Venture X with the Savor One (3% Groceries/Restaurants) which is $0 AF and can transfer points directly to the VX?
Because Amex gold gets you through the door into amex hotels collection, amex offers page, 60,000-90,000 point signup bonus, customer service, travel protections, and it's a very pretty card to flex since it's gold not blue.
It’s like you didn’t even watch the video. He literally explains why….
I agree
I spend a lot on dining ($20,000 a year) so an extra 20,000 of dining points makes sense for me. Since I spend the $10 ubereats and $10 grubhub credit every month, my net expense is $10 for an additional 20,000 points. Plus I get access to the amex offers portal and hotels collection. Amex gold is an easy YES from me.
Feels like this is the ultimate city life duo. Good stuff
You can also bring a SavorOne with you if you plan to go overseas
That’s very true! The right cards for you depend on what your goals are at the end of the day.
We came to this exact conclusion last month. Right on!
That's great to hear! I think it's a really solid setup for the right person. I'm glad you enjoyed!
Exactly what I have been thinking, got the amex gold and next would be venture x, great video!
They'll appreciate that I'm sure 🤷♂️
Thank you for watching as always my man!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial I really liked the gold! just really like the simplicity of not worrying about using the credits!
@@davinchee I get that for sure. It can become a lot to keep up with for sure!
same as your case minus VX, since using the portal to book hotels, on some hotels, they don't honor your built up hotel status.
Am I really saving cause if I'm using the credits to offset the Anual Fee, it's forcing me to spend not actually "save."
However, I do want to have more options when transferring points to travel partners.
Although I don't use Uber, I feel like I can still utilize Amex points as I usually pay when I go out in groups to earn points and have my friends Venmo me. Also, I do spent a lot on groceries.
Still have time to think over since I got my Venture X just three months ago.
Such an awesome low "effective" annual fee setup with amazing value! Just missing the Amex Gold and I'm set! Awesome video Spencer!
I agree Kevin! It all depends on your current goals and setup, but this duo would work great for me. Thanks for the kind words man! Looking forward to you getting that Gold card down the line 👀
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Fortunately I have a shake shack within walking distance, which will probably get tiring fast 😂
Haha that’s awesome. At least you’ll be getting $10 back per month on those purchases.. and a good workout! 🤣
No gas spend?
This was the EXACT video I was looking for. I have the AMEX Gold & was trying to figure out what card to pair it with. Originally, I was going to get the AMEX Platinum but I like the idea of having access to the AMEX & Capital One networks + AMEX & Visa. Thanks!!
That’s awesome to hear! While this setup isn’t necessarily perfect for everyone, I know it serves me really well and a lot of people have said the same. I’m glad I could help!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Just got approved. 😁
Let’s go!!! That’s so good to hear. Congrats!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial well you get 5% on select travel with the custom cash. Idk what they deem select travel I haven’t looked
You’re right about that but I was more talking about how to transfer out to travel partners you need the Citi Premier card. I’d use the Custom Cash for gas in that trifecta personally.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial oh yeah true. I’m using it for gas, restaurants, and car insurance right now to help it the SUB
Nice that makes sense! After you finish the SUB will you only use it for gas?
What do you think of CO venture X and Saphire Preferred Combo instead of the Amex gold?
Great video Thank you
Of course! Thank you for watching!
I have a capital one Walmart card. Can I convert the points to venture x?
No you cannot. The card would have to earn Capital One points/miles but the Walmart card doesn't apply there to my knowledge.
I literally have these three cards in my wallet 🎉
Or just go Amex blue for gas
@@RavnessL
Amazing video Spencer! 🔥 This "slim" setup covers so many different bases while still offering a relatively straightforward system.
Thank you Chase!! I agree with you. Although it isn't the most ideal for everyone, I think it can be really powerful (and simple) for the right person.
What do you think of the Capital One Savor card (Where it's 4% not 3% cash back) in replace of the Amex gold? Even has a lower annual fee
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial thanks for the insight!
No problem!
Another good combo would be the BBP + personal Gold + business Gold. 2x on everything , 4x dining/groceries, 4x on gas/flights
Ok spencer I agree but what’ if you don’t have the coX card how
Would you pair the Amex Gold ?
Nice information get them
Coming
Great question! It depends on what earning categories you need covered. If you’re looking for a catch-all card, the BBP could compliment the Gold card really well. If you’re looking for a luxury travel credit card, the Platinum could be a great compliment to the Venture X. No matter what, you want to make sure you’ll get positive value from all the credits that come on an annual fee card and that your main earning categories are covered within a point ecosystem that you value highly.
How would you rate these 2 cards vs the chase trifecta?
Great question! I think the two duos are for different people to be honest. I think the Chase duo makes a ton of sense if you're someone who doesn't travel very frequently and likes Chase's travel partners the most. However, if you need slightly more luxury perks then this duo could make more sense with everything the Venture X gives you. Personally I have both and will continue to use both, but it all comes down to how much effective value you'll get from both duos. Hopefully that helps a bit!
The duo is great but I feel that there's a lack of "hotel" aspect, maybe adding in Amex Plat is even better
For travel, how for you combine the amex reward points with the cap 1 miles?
You can't physically combine them into one account with either Cap1 or Amex. However, they have multiple overlapping transfer partners that you can effectively do that with. For example, let's say you have a trip to book with Virgin Atlantic costing 200k Virgin miles... instead of having to have 200k Amex or Cap1 points individually, if you had 100k Amex points and 100k Cap1 miles, you could transfer all of those to your Virgin account and "combine" your points that way. Hopefully that makes sense!
Ok, thanks for that clear explanation!
No problem at all!
Definitely interesting combining 2 different card issuers but this definitely works as a great set up!
It's definitely one to consider depending on what you find important. Personally, this works super well for me, but that definitely won't be the case for everyone. Thanks for watching Manny!
Does the Amex gold card get reported to your personal credit bureaus every month? Does it help build your credit?
Hi Spencer, I just got the VCx and thinking of a duo. What's your opinion on blue cash preferred vs amex gold?
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial yeah I’m sold, now if I could just find a link with the 90k bonus offer lol
@@alexalatorre2574 Yeah definitely get one of those. The Credit Community Discord will have plenty of people with those links in it I imagine. I linked that Discord in my watch me apply for the Gold card if you're interested in joining. I don't run it, but I'm a member of it.
So if I buy a plane ticket from united is still protected since I charge it to my ventra x
Solid duo💪
I think for the right person it’s super solid for sure! Thanks for watching man!
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial watched it and seems like I probably just need to cancel or downgrade, watched the vid when he posted it.
@@Ben..E thanks, do you know if this card also give you points if you use on the toll bridge payment?
C1 transfer partners are not good for domestic airlines and hotels. And the $300 travel credit can only be used in the portal right?
What you think about Capitol silver and Amex Gold combo??👍🏽👌🏾
That could work okay too! The issue with the Capital One Quicksilver is that you can’t transfer those points out to travel partners without a Venture card which would make this setup less ideal. The Gold card’s points are really only good when used for travel which is why it’s a good combo with the Venture X, but if you’re just getting started in the credit card game and use the quicksilver as a catch-all credit card, it could work well! Especially if you end up upgrading that card to the Savor One and then apply for the Venture X down the line. Hopefully that makes sense!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Thanks
Um… there’s the Savor and SavorOne, does the exact same thing as Amex gold and won’t set you back $300
Couldn't the AMEX Gold with the AMEX Blue Business Plus be a better duo since the AMEX BBP could be the 2x catch all card that pool into the MR points for the Gold card?
That’s a great duo as well! I wanted to highlight this one as a different approach to credit card duos, but it’s never a bad idea to get cards from the same lender as long as you’d get better value that way. The BBP is just not as good of a complimentary card to the Gold here when it comes to travel benefits and protections. So for a food/travel/catch-all combo, I like this one better than the Gold/BBP combo personally.
It’s also nice to have a non-Amex option in case the card is not accepted, particularly abroad.
@@bombas238 Great point!
Haha no matter what you were here really early which I really appreciate!!
@@AdamBA380 great explanation, thanks 😊
Not with the Gold card, this is what the Savor card is for since it gets 4% back.
I think that's a better setup for a lot of folks, but I prefer to not be tied down to Capital One and their transfer partners. I think earning points with different lenders can be really solid, but that's not the case for everyone. Good insight though!
Best two card setup? 🤫
For the right person, it could be!!
You gonna go for the savor card eventually?
I might!! However, I'm not sure how much value it would give me at this point with all the others I have. Maybe I'll add it to at least get some experience with it to share on the channel and who knows, maybe I'll end up really loving it! If Cap1 had better transfer partners I would be way more gung-ho about it.
Honestly sapphire reserve is better than the venture x
For the right consumer I’d agree. The effective annual fee is just much higher than the Venture X for the majority of people ($250 compared to -$5). But if you get more value from the added benefits of the CSR outside of the annual travel credit than you do on the Venture X, then that card may make more sense for you!
First 😅

Amex Plat, Gold, and Venture X is the ultimate trifecta.
+/- a hotel card.
That would be a super valuable combo as long as you can get positive value from all the credits that come on those cards. For frequent travelers, that setup could be super solid.
Capital One Portal.
I’ve heard good things about it! I’m hoping to get a bit of experience with it myself in the near future. I definitely will be doing so to use my annual travel credit, that’s for sure.
Give me duo for cash back hombre!!
Haha I’ll have to add that video to the queue!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial you better ~~~~
