It was worth every hoop I had to jump through, though. If you're Military or an eligible Veteran I strongly recommend NFCU.
I would agree but considering that Credit One isn't as bad as Premier Bank. Credit One will be the better card for people in the SubPrime category. Mission Lane, Destiny,Indigo, Open Sky are really bad too with high annual fees. Even those cards are one step above F on the Premier Card.
I moved everything to Capital One because of their $250 bonus. Haven’t had any regrets since. Zero fees on their savings and checking is aces. Only issue I have is their limited locations.
Chase has the largest portion in this video for a reason, as a chase user I’ve had nothing but good experiences. Best traveling and every day use credit cards.
Customer service can be a huge con for a lot of lenders out there. Citi’s card offerings are super solid though, and with access to transfer partners while having a good cashback redemption rate, I like em a lot.

I've heavily considered it before! Particularly the business version to avoid adding to my 5/24 count. It can be solid, especially during an elevated welcome offer period.
The biggest change I would make would be swapping Barclays and Discover. I've been a customer with Barclays for a very long time, I have and use multiple cards from them, and I have never had an issue with their customer service. They are certainly a B Tier lender. As for Discover they have one card of any interest that works on a limited system that is not accepted everywhere, especially if you travel internationally. They are the very definition of a one trick pony. Thanks for the content, Spencer. A fun conversation for certain!
I also have not experienced any problems with Barclay's customer service, so far. I was approved for 2 cards within a week of each other. For the business card I had to do KYC but I was able to fax my docs to them and had a virtual card in a couple of days. I did have to call recon when I applied for the second card but that was because of the short time between apps. 10 minutes on the phone and I had my second card. The cards were the Wyndham Business and Hawaiian Airlines.
I wonder how many people actually have those trash "Luxury Cards"? I've never seen one in the real world, but I've seen a ton of mailers. Great video and solid rankings
What do you think about the AAA options for cash back cards? I'm really not a major spender but 0 annual fee with 5% gas stations or the other card is 0 annual fee with 5% grocery stores seems really good to me.
This was a lot of fun (and informative) Spencer. I just can't bring myself to put the Chase ecosystem in the same tier as Amex. I do agree that for the majority, Chase is better. However, Amex is really not a "majority" Issuer. In some ways it's apples to oranges, and they probably exist for different use-cases and target demos. Chase has gaping holes in their ecosystem: groceries, gas, no 2x basic earn, and 3x restaurants is just meh. The largest bank in America is way behind Amex on a lounge ecosystem. Though I really like Chase, they end up A or A+ if I'm generous. Great stuff man!👍🏾
I see why you'd say that! Again, it's definitely a subjective ranking and personally I value Chase higher than Amex with my travel habits and lifestyle at the moment. Thanks for the comment brotha!

Chase’s flexibility of redemptions at a respectable rate is what makes them #1 over Amex for me. Of course you can add the CS Platinum or Business Platinum + Amex Business Checking account to cash out your MR points at a good rate, but that requires a high annual fee to make that happen.
I agree with your ranking system 👍💯 I believe you did this topic justice. I would put AMEX behind chase just because you can't use their card's internally and the high fees but they are still S- tear with really good cards.
Did anybody have phone number verification issue with capital one? I can’t convert points to partner because they can’t verify my phone number, but the number is mine and nobody, including technical support, can’t get this done. How can I fix it?
Fortunately I haven’t experienced this, but unfortunately that means I can’t help too much. I’d be sure to call customer support and get it handled, but if they aren’t helping you then that’s a problem.
I more included that line as a way to explain how Amex is a lender that people trust a lot in large part thank to their insurances and such, so people tend to lean towards them for large purchases.
Although chase has good partners I feel like people never mention that chase's cards have very poor point earning if youre not churning the bonuses. Locked in at 1.5x when the FF's category isnt good (i.e. rn). Imo most of Chase can just be replaced by the bilt card which has hyatt. Just combine Bilt with something like Citi and optionally use the VX for travel/costco to replace the DC.
I completely get that! I think the ability to get multiple welcome offers on each of Chase's cards over and over is what makes it easy to earn points with them though.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Yeah I guess it really depends on your preferences. In my case I'm looking for a long term set up which wouldn't require constantly having inquiries on my report but I get that churning could work too. Aside from that chase also has the world of hyatt card which I really want. As for Amex I couldn't justify having to monitor all of my various coupons. Coupon credit cards would really just force me to spend more in an unnatural way to rationalize the annual fees
Mostly agree except with Synchrony Bank. I already get what an Amazon Chase card would give me with their others. I find Amazon Store card has a solid cash back 5% and it stacks on some deals. I also find Lowe’s to be a great card. I am a veteran and get an automatic 10% which stacks with 5% off using that card. That is an everyday thing. I am heavy Amex simply because I travel a lot but would probably be Chase heavy if I did not. BILT is like its own category I think. It’s a must have card if your into the card game.
I rank Amex over Chase for 1 reason once you have an Amex card they do soft pulls on the rest 🤷🏾OMG US Bank is hard to get🥴YES! Please do a video on credit union cards 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I like this video trying to change things up and doing something different, I’m surprised you have AMEX in S tier instead of A, everything else is pretty solid in placement although like Stan I do actually really like Bank of America, currently don’t have any of their cards but they are my primary bank. Once you reach their higher tiers in the preferred rewards program the cards become pretty good
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! I think Amex and Chase both deserve to be S-tier, but they're for different audiences. I ranked each lender assuming I fit their target demographics and tried to look at them from an objective standpoint, so that's where they landed for me. I hope to make my way to the Bank of America ecosystem one day myself! Thanks for the comment as always Dalton.
Love the videos. I have had a secured credit card with a $500 CL for the past 18 months and 2 weeks ago I applied and got approved for the Venture X with a $10,000 CL. I plan to apply for either the Marriott Bonvoy boundless or Chase Sapphire Preferred in December. Any suggestions?
Wow that's a big step for a second card! Congrats on your approval! I'd say your next card depends on your travel habits coming up and whether or not there are any elevated offers out. For example, if you get 5 FNCs with the Boundless and have a trip planned where you could use em, that could be the easy answer. It all depends though!
Overlooking price protection which Capital One will provide. (Should've done that instead on a Costco purchase) S tier BoA looking past the AUM 100K loyalty. Complain about Merrill sweep rates that Fidelity Schwab and Vanguard handle favorablely and do it manually 🤷
This is an off topic question but the amazon card from chase. Does it count a slot for the 5/24? I think you mentioned previously it doesnt? And it was my last card before reaching the 5 limit wanted to make sure before applying to any of theirs ahead of time 🙂
Unfortunately all personal cards (and some Cap1 business cards) will add to your 5/24 count. You probably heard me mention that many people are able to get that card above 5/24, but it still adds to your count.
Great video, I agree with you on all but US Bank being above Bank of America. Although BofA has no transfer partners, for someone who is team cash back, and platinum honors, I think it rates the same tier as US Bank.
At my current stage in the game, my ranking definitely aligns with yours. Although I personally don’t like the coupon approach of Amex which ranks it behind C1 for me. The USBAR is an intriguing option right now. For someone that leans more towards portal redemptions vs transfer partners or domestic/economy travel, I think an interesting argument can be made for using the USBAR with the “realtime rewards” over the CSR. The main drawback I see is the inability to transfer points between USBank cards though
I completely get where you're coming from! If US Bank had transfer partners they'd be really hard to beat with the USBAR. Thanks for the comment brotha!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficialabsolutely! Keep up the great work. Correct me if I’m wrong, but for someone content with 1.5cpp and not concerned with the potential outsized value of transfer partners, the USBAR essentially opens up the playing field for all carriers either through the portal or by utilizing the “realtime rewards” directly with each carrier. This is obviously leaving a lot of value on the table for business/first class flights, but for economy it’s a valid option.
Yeah, Chase is better for SUBs but for service Amex wins. Also, just overall for someone living internationally like myself, Amex is better because you can transfer your cards to other countries.
I see where you’re coming from! However, I’d argue Amex and Chase are more comparable than you’d think abroad. Particularly because Chase has a lot of international partners and their cards are accepted abroad while Amex’s aren’t always.
Lovin' the USBAR love, but it's beyond S tier - it's $-tier! Yesterday's $521 co-pay at the dentist gives me $24.50 back on travel. (4.5% in free travel redemptions - but wait, there's more - your free travel redemption was technically 3x spend too - so you earn 3x points while redeeming points). 4.5% of the 4.5% = 4.7025%), Not to mention all the Visa Infinite perks and benefits. I use this for rental cars, transient taxes in Hawaii, and things you can't book in a portal like DCL. 8 Priority Pass Restaurant visits, too! Property taxes with a 2.9% fee - bring it on - it's still cash flow positive. $-tier baby!
Agree with everything except I would switch Barclays and Amex. Had great customer service with Barclays and awful customer service with Amex today even though I have the platinum. Barclays AA and Hawaiian are the best credit cards ever. Just buy a pack of gum with each and you're done. No annoying Amex minimum spend with no tracker and confusing misleading practices. No coupons. Just went to Phoenix Centurion lounge and it was disgusting. Tiny fruitflies and other insects flying around. Cold white bread dinner rolls. Stopped making cocktails at 7:30, arrived at 7:36. Rude people. Terrible environment.
Wow that’s super interesting! Usually Amex is considered the best of the best when it comes to service, but I’ve seen more reports of them dropping the ball lately which is odd. Thank you for sharing your experience!
This is a hot take and I agree with it. Even a 2x catch all would be OP but Chase knows that their points are worth too much so they have to starve you for them.
That's fair! I think the ability to get multiple welcome offers on each of Chase's cards over and over is what makes it easy to earn points with them though.
Hahah I told y'all I liked them as a lender! However, I wouldn't say they're S-tier for everyone, just the people who actually get easy value from their cards which was an assumption I made with the rankings today. Thanks for watching as always brotha! 👊🏼
As I mentioned, they’re pushing the envelope in the credit card game rn and with them recently adding partners, their lineup is really competitive objectively. This is all based on my personal opinions, so you may rank em different and that’s what great about the credit card game!
I remember when I had a Credit One card. It was $8/mo and it did give me 1% cash back. But ONLY on gas purchases 😂. They should be even below trash. Send them to the center of the earth and forget that they exist.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial As you said in your video, their logo looks close to Capital One and they're predatory. They target those who have terrible credit and/or are low income earners. So they prey on those who are trying to rebuild their credit or desperately need a line of credit to help survive.
Is this a travel points value ranking? If it is, then seems like a good ranking. If its a credit card ranking, then I dont know. Capital One, Wells and especially US Bank and BofA are fabulous earners for cashback. From that standpoint, they are laughably better than Amex and Chase.
As I mentioned in the beginning, I took into account a lot of factors including points ecosystems, card offerings, etc. For those on team cashback I could see why you'd rank others higher!
It’s possible! However I’m already doing pretty close to that. I do 1 public video a week alongside 1 members only video bi-weekly and 1 members only live monthly. So 6 long form pieces of content a month.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Years ago I paid off my balance with Discover, and they increased my credit limit even though I didn't ask for it. Shortly after that they canceled my card for no legit reason. I complained to the credit bureaus, and they eventually removed Discovers' closed acct notifications from my credit report.
Chase customer service is fckn garbage. All calls go straight to India, to people who are barely understandable and don't know sh!t about any Chase product. I have to scour the internet and watch youtube videos to try to get my simple questions answered.

I had credit one used it twice for a month and canceled them customer service was trash, tried to screw me over on interest rates
That seems to be the common theme with credit one sadly! Thanks for sharing your experience.
I love the USBAR and glad it ranked high.
I can’t wait to get that one (foreshadowing for next video 👀)… no I didn’t go for it yet, but I’m definitely thinking about it.
American express is A/B teir.
Fair enough! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Hahah I love it! $ tier is great. I can't wait to add the USBAR one day. Thanks for sharing your thoughts my man!
Luxury card is actually by Barclay's though
Very interesting! I didn't know they were associated since Barclays doesn't list them on their website from what I've found.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial yes, I have thier black card. It's managed in the Barclay's app and the paperwork lists it's issued by Barclay's.
Chase having 1.5% as its catch all automatically takes it out of S tier.
This is a hot take and I agree with it. Even a 2x catch all would be OP but Chase knows that their points are worth too much so they have to starve you for them.
That's fair! I think the ability to get multiple welcome offers on each of Chase's cards over and over is what makes it easy to earn points with them though.
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficialbut each one is a hard pull is it not?
U.S. bank smartly is a game changer for business spend
I believe it's a personal credit card but it looks like it could be really solid!
I feel only the wealthy uses Amex 😂😭 I don’t feel I’ll get there but in time hopefully 🙏
A lot of times that's true, but that doesn't mean the cards are worth it for them. A lot of times they're wasting money on high annual fee cards.
VX is the best
I’m happy to only have A tier cards
Really tryna debunk that “I hate Amex” rumor aren’t ya? 😂
Hahah I told y'all I liked them as a lender! However, I wouldn't say they're S-tier for everyone, just the people who actually get easy value from their cards which was an assumption I made with the rankings today. Thanks for watching as always brotha! 👊🏼
Chase is also better internationally than AMEX
22:38 bros shy
Come on Spencer all the good advice u give us ur gonna rank Wells Fargo so high bro 🤣
As I mentioned, they’re pushing the envelope in the credit card game rn and with them recently adding partners, their lineup is really competitive objectively. This is all based on my personal opinions, so you may rank em different and that’s what great about the credit card game!
They’ve come a long way.
Amex is my #1 by far for elevated travel experiences,…..Although Chase is catching up with the Sapphire Reserve, United Club, and Ritz Carlton cards.
I completely get where you’re coming from! It all depends on personal use cases.
saw em off
🤘🏼
Wells Fargo in A tier ….
All in the eyes of the beholder and how you use the benefits. Good summary. Thanks Spencer
Agreed! Thanks for watching as always brotha!
I remember when I had a Credit One card. It was $8/mo and it did give me 1% cash back. But ONLY on gas purchases 😂. They should be even below trash. Send them to the center of the earth and forget that they exist.
Yikes that's so tough haha. It's crazy they've stayed in business so long with those types of offerings.
why would you pay for a card like that?
Amex is better.
Wells Fargo. Never ever lol
To each their own!
Will you ever go back to making 2 videos a week?
It’s possible! However I’m already doing pretty close to that. I do 1 public video a week alongside 1 members only video bi-weekly and 1 members only live monthly. So 6 long form pieces of content a month.
👍🏼👍🏼
Syncrony belongs in the trash
👍🏻
Super close one! I appreciate you as always 🥈
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficialnot really notification was a minute late. It’s all good. Great video.
@@SOXGATORS Ah on my end it shows y'all both did it within the same minute. Thank you though brotha!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial it might I got the notification at 5 :01 et lol
First
My man! I appreciate you 👑
Discover is a scam...
That's an interesting take! Feel free to back that up in the comments below.
Synchrony is possibly the worst ever, should be in the garbage, unfortunately almost every store card is with Synchrony.
Chase customer service is fckn garbage. All calls go straight to India, to people who are barely understandable and don't know sh!t about any Chase product. I have to scour the internet and watch youtube videos to try to get my simple questions answered.
