REX 9052 (78 rpm record)
Brian Rust (in “British Dance Bands on Record 1911 - 1945”, Brian Rust & Sandy Forbes, General Gramophone Publications Ltd., 1987) gives the following personnel:
Brian Lawrance (vocal, director); unknown trumpet & trombone; Jim Easton (clarinet, alto sax, bar sax); Harry Karr (alto sax, flute); Jimmy Gordon (alto sax); Jimmy Durrant-(clarinet, tenor sax); Edward Rubach (piano); Harry Sherman (guitar); Larry Wilson (string bass); unknown drums. Recorded in London , UK, May 20, 1937.
I can find very little information on this bandleader and orchestra. The following website: fromthevaults-boppinbob.blogs... states that he was born in Australia, but was only successful in the United Kingdom; that he was an actor, singer, bandleader, and violinist; and that he was born on either 1908 or 1909 (the author of the website has both days present as birthdates); and that he died in 1983, after returning to Australia.
I can’t find this recording anywhere on the internet or YT, but correct me if I’m wrong. While perhaps Brian Lawrance was not Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, I think he was still excellent, and had great charm and musicality as a singer. Further, this arrangement (I’ve no idea who did it), really swings, and some of the instrumentalists (particularly the pianist - and the string bass player who does incredibly virtuosic “slap pizzicati” - that’s where you pluck the string and then slap the finger board on the way down) are amazing. Just my two cents.
I did the best I could to remove some of the surface noise using Vinyl Studio software, but I didn’t want to completely destroy the integrity of the higher frequencies, so you’ll still hear a little distortion. Maybe if I had had a thinner stylus, it might have made a difference. Images from discogs.com
🤗❤️🎶 I love and enjoy hearing these dreamy oldies🎶 🙂your cats are cute 🎉Thank you
I’m glad you enjoyed the music and thanks for listening! 😊
Outstanding trumpet solo - which nobody mentions.....
Why all these different labels, when it is only one specific song?
Because I no longer have the original 78 rpm record and I couldn’t think of anything else for the visuals :-)
