Both versions of Moonlight Saving Time I know, this one and the Ambrose version are magnificent. I love that superb warm sound of the early 30s, which both HMV and Columbia had. Sound wise they are unsurpassible even today. By 1930 the recording equipment, from microphone to cutting table and everything in between had been honed into near perfection. The big problem was the reproducing. There was simply no gramophone that was able to reproduce faithfully without wearing down a disc in one play.

The HMV 102 gramophone made its debut in 1931, combining the best acoustic technology available in its day. The sound-box was a modified Orthophonic, far gentler on records than mica diaphragms.

"Whistling in the Dark" always reminds me of Peter Bowles superb performance in the court room in "Pennies from Heaven". The best BBC series ever!

Great-Jack Payne had the best version of this band in my opinion.
If only Jack had gone to Piccadilly or Edison Bell instead of Imperial after leaving Columbia...

How many of these were Ray Noble arrangements? He was on the staff at this time, I hear tell.
None. Yes, Ray did arrange for Jack Payne, but it was before he became the Light Music Director at HMV.
