This channel has quickly become my no1 source for Judo tips, keep up the excellent work!
It's little things like this that's so important to teach fellow judokas, the sooner the better, and its these important things you take the time teaching that's very appreciated and why I will keep on supporting you.
Best channel. No intereuppting music, just practice.
Baffling!!! So good!
Great video sensei. Good information remember when I did judo like first and second classes kept asking what is the stance where should I grab the gi in combat the answer was always "wherever" and I was left just as confused as before I asked. Still love judo though.
I appreciate these videos so much!!! Thank you!
Thanks so much..I do Jiujitsu and I find ur tips really awesome
As always...superb content. Juicy stuff
Another great video Sensei!
nicely taught.... thank you..
Awesome video!
Thanks!👍🏼
Thanks for the tip. Remember to watch the Tel Aviv Judo Grand Prix!
Great topic, nicely done. 👍
This is gold.
Nice vidéo, hope you will do the same one about RvL
Thanks!! I'm a Judo beginner and never understood why anything I tried never worked in sparring :)
Oosh!...Thanks for the tip Sensei
0.00 to 0.04 I thought I wanted to click on play but paused instead and waiting.
I always go for lapel 1st. I will start trying this. Watching makes me wonder why I haven’t thought of this before. I’m sure I’ve been told but I’m slow sometimes lol.
The general rule of thumb go for the sleeve first (or far lapel) if it's RvR / LvL. If it's RvL, you should go for the lapel first.
You can always break these rules, but this is the most orthodox way to start basic competitive judo. And there's a whole ocean of technique beyond that; I see something new every time I watch two international competitors go at it.
Sensei, can you do a video on how to counter a high grip?
Show 🥋
Perfect defense until perfect opportunity.
This may sound like a dumb question as I do BJJ (white belt) and am not as familiar with Judo: Is it typical for right handed judoka to stand with the right leg forward?
Side note: Huge shout out and thank you for your tomoe nage and uchi mata vs. BJJ videos. I practiced the movements at home without a partner last night. This morning I was rolling with a blue belt starting from standing, went for the uchi mata, but he bent forward to get his hips back. I immediately transitioned to a beautiful tomoe nage. The blue belt hit the mat and just said, "Nice!"
For beginners, it's advisable to stand with your right foot forward and use your right hand to grab the collar. As you get more advanced, you may decide to switch. In fact, many international competitors do switch; I'm guessing at the Olympic level it's about 60/40 right handed vs left handed, instead of the typical 90/10 that you see at the lower levels.
Personally I switched for two reasons. First, I really like uchi-mata, and for me it's easier to use uchi-mata in RvL. This is a very common reason for people to switch.
The other reason I switched is because my right knee is more stable than my left, so I prefer my right leg to be my support leg. This is not a common reason for people to switch; most judo competitors are extremely strong and stable on either leg, and they prefer to use their strongest and most coordinated leg to lift because they can control the opponent better (
@@jsl8461 Thank you! And I totally agree! With my limited Judo knowledge and experience I was able to use a tomoe nage to get him down and end up on top :) He now thinks I'm really good with take downs haha!
Wait, do I know this dojo, is this the one in Montreal? :)
And stances left VS left or right VS right?
I so hope the first pointer is: Upright.
Can we get L vs R?
It's the same except you'll want prioritize keeping your sleeve away from your partner.
So the best target for your dominant hand is the lapel?
Absolutely - that's where all your big throws come from. Unless you have a very good right-sided Sode Tsurikomi Goshi, there's little reason to grab their sleeve with your dominant hand.
@@marcusjones250 interesting i did instinctively without knowing it was better or worst, just came more natural.
It depends on what throws you do best and from where. Every judoka should have throws off of the sleeve and you should be able to at least grip into a dominant position from your opposite-hand post.
is it just me or did he not show or talk about any of the stances? like in karate they show the difference between front stance, back stance, house stanse, and cat stance.
In judo from what I have seen all those other stances are there in like split second transitory flashes. The stance he is in is "the stance". You might catch the barest glimpse of cat stance during leg attacks like ouchi/kouchi gari for example. Default judo stance is very weight neutral, since the person you are fighting is going to try to beat you by unbalancing you you don't want to do half his work for him.
In this video, Shintaro is outlining the ideal stance for a competitive judo athlete. This is not a self-defense scenario, but a sport one. Of course, there is a cross-over. However, this is the most common judo stance.
Could we get a RvL version? For those weirdo lefties amongst us :)
Or those weirdos like me who like to practice both sides ^___^
