  • One of the most beautiful songs Ralph has ever written. He told me that he has a room in house covered in photos of Naomis that have been sent to him by people who have named their daughters after this song....

I started playing accoustic guitar in the late 60's..... Ralph McTell was and still is an icon of live accoustic guitar and one of my heroes. People talk about modern song writers, but this man is up thee with the best of the last 30 years along with such as Paul Simon, Sting, and Ray Davies... song craftsman... Just played this to my wife of 2 years... in tears she said it all .. it aint bad getting old as long as we're together ......

As haughtingly , poignant and richly beautiful as when first heard in concert in Melbourne in the 80's.
Time has added to its riches.
    Many thanks Ralph.

This song always raises goosebumps. It's beautiful, but also reflects a level of self realisation and maturity that all men reach about their marriages or long term partnerships.

I know all the words to this song, but I've never been able to sing along with it because I'm sobbing by the end of the first verse. Judging from the comments, a number of us have been blessed enough to find Naomis, and I can only guess that Ralph McTell was too, as a song like this couldn't have been born of pure imagination. I didn't meet Karen (my Naomi) until I was 40. I'm now 63, and I can attest that every syllable of this song is true.

I saw Ralph McTell in concert at the London Palladium in 1980, where he sand this song and reduced me to tears and I decided that if I had a daughter with my then partner she would be called Naomi, I found out the next day I was expecting, and she (Naomi-Jayne) has been with me ever since

............my partners name isn't Naomi, but the rest is true and it reminds me, as the ungrateful person that I am, just how much I owe to the woman who has always been there for me. It's a beautiful song that leaves a lump in my throat every time I hear it, particularly now our children have left home and the house feels very empty.

Don't be too hard on yourself, we have better sides, better times, and the reverse. It would seem that you Naomi just loves you for the person you are, just appreciate that.

I have already posted about this beautiful ballad of a loving tribute to Ralph's lifelong love, Naomi.
On reflecting further about this lovely, tear inducing ballad, it has occurred to me that the song would have been written when Ralph was in his 20's and yet to fully experience life-long love, the joys of children and their, sometimes, erratic visiting patterns post leaving home. It doubtless has always been thus.
Ralph is now on the backward half of his 2024 Australian tour.
He played this ballad and several other back catalogue gems when I have previously seen him in concert. No doubt, these older gems must be nearing 50 years or so since they were written. One can understand why Ralpyh may be a touch tired of singing them, however a long time, and no doubt newer, fans really love to hear his older greats, as well as newer material.
He was in rare form on Saturday, February 24th.concert.

      Great comment Robert! 😀
Yip this is such a beautiful and mature song written by Ralph when he was very young.
I played support for him in the late 70s and he told me that there was a period when he got fed up singing Streets of London every night - then he came to realise that his only "hit" record allowed him to tour and sing his other songs and also pay his bills so he enjoyed paying homage to it every night since then.
I saw him twice during this current tour - in Enniskillen and Londonderry, he just gets better and better ever time!
      Thanks for commenting 🙂

It is pleasing that Ralph must have met and lived with his Naomi, as others have noted, these lyrics come direct from his ❤️.
It is a matter of significant personal regret that my personal travels have not mirrored that of this fine singer and a warm and wonderful man.

I am I suppose growing old with my Naomi, well 35 years so far. She is all I ever needed and I have never ever looked else where. My love. I often tease her by reminding her that if you spell Naomi backwards it spells I moan
