What a lovely song. He talked about writing it after a girl approached him after a gig and said she used to live in the same building. She was the daughter mentioned in the song. He went home and wrote this. Such a sweet thing. His dad was one of the many who never returned after the war and the Irishman in the song became a surrogate father for him and the children in the area. Beautiful tribute.
I think many of us knew a Mr Connaughton. I did. Great guy, always had time for us all. Trolleys, welding, fixing anything at anytime. Would work all day as a plumber and then still have time for us all. His children and all the local lads. Looking back he was a GREAT person who we lost to soon.
We were surrounded by men like that, most of the guys in my neighbourhood worked in one of the same 2 places. It was a wonderful safe environment to grow up in. I mourn heavily for the fact my boys haven't been so fortunate.
I knew of someone - he was called Mr Ringwood. He was kind of like a neighbour. Every Thursday morning from school, when I was in year 3, we used to walk along the main road to the library. And it was on each of those occasions that he would be out in his front garden doing some gardening, he would stop and say hello to us. We even had weeks when we were late back to school as we took an interest in his garden, even going into it, small groups at a time and learned about the different flowers. It’s not much but it’s something that has stuck with me for life
Charley Bradley was our mr. Connaughton. This man could fix anything and never turned a kid away. He liked a beer but so what we all loved him. RIP Charley ❤
This man of music can write a great song and deliver it so well, he has the full box n dice. Thanks also to you Dougie, good to see you are still as active as ever.
I know that people will always associate him with "That Song." Why he has never reached higher levels within the entertainment/music industry is beyond me, and most unfair. In consideration of the limited talent one is subjected to on a daily bases.
HOPE YOU ENJOY POSTING MR P.ONEILLS Videos, We certainly will be having a chat in.person about this, every video you have posted is direct from his VHS Tapes leaving no doubt as to where you obtained them direct from Corrigans Lockup Letterkenny, this material would never be on tv or anywhere else They were bought at great expense from UTV AND RTE TV , and they must be returned With any monies obtained from posting them on UA-cam or anywhere else MR HADDEN A trip to Donegal is forthcoming Maybe you would like to inform Mr Corrigan aswell, as he hasn't Got back to any messages left.
I'm only going to tell you this once. I have no idea what you are talking about. These programmes were broadcast on Grampian TV in Scotland and I recorded some of them at the time. I still have the original VHS tapes I made - they have never been out of Aberdeen, let alone any "lock-up in Letterkenny". I post the clips here because otherwise they would disappear forever, and people seem to appreciate seeing them. I have never "monetised" any of the recordings posted on UA-cam, and income to me from them is precisely zero. I put them here purely for love of the music. But if you feel that these videos should not be here, just say so, and I will remove them.
How lucky we all are to have this treasure to watch and to listen to.

Fair play to them all. I sing this at sessions in memory of my Dad, also a neighbourhood father.
Totally agree.....more songs like this are needed in this world.
I never tire of listening to Ralph.England’s John Prine
Excellent song, and heartwarming lyrics. Ralph McTell is one of the greatest songwriters and folk singers.
MrConnaughtin got to hear this song with the help if his daughter isnt that a good ending to the story :)
That is brilliant to know. How did it happen. I know from the man himself that Mr. Connaughton was originally from Co. Westmeath ( Ireland)
Donal O Connor not too sure i heard it in an interview
What a beautiful, clean but unique voice abd singing style. I wish there were more singers like him around today
