Lemmy's original is chilling to listen to.
But this Sabaton Tribute to the song and artist/s is haunting and hits deep with the visuals.
I've watched it so many times now and each time is sad.
And the message that all wars are the same for the soldiers. Doesn't matter where you come from or what war you fought.
    I enjoy watching your reactions.

Lemmy's version captured the perspective of those that fell. This captures the perspective of us that didn't forget. And that's important too. And they remember Lemmy too. Props to Sabaton for this very different take on a classic!

Never apologize for having feelings, my friend.
Im 6'3, 275 lbs retired US Army paratrooper, been there done that, got the T shirt, seen it 1st hand. And the video gets me every time I see it.
Also if you watch it again, everything you see is has a nod to something, the opening sound and them by the bus, sounds just like the opening to " Bismark" to me, the planes and "No bullets fly", the female solder and "Night witches" etc... all the various soldiers are represented throughout time.
Love you two. Keep it up.

Lemmon wrote “1916” after watching a documentary on the Battle of the Somme. It made him sad and intensely angry that so many young men died for just a few miles of ground while old men sat back in safety and got medals. The horror of the “Battle” was not just that it took so many lives so quickly, 19,000 Englishmen died in three hours, or that it wiped out the entire male population of some English towns, but that it went on for five more months. And the War itself last four years. All because a member of the Austrian nobility was shot. The young men who went to fight the war to end all wars, and grew up while fighting the first modern war in the horror of the trenches, were called the Lost Generation. All told, 70 million fought, 8.5 million died, and 21 million were wounded. No wonder Lemmy sounds as if his heart is breaking. Thank you for your reactions. You actually speak about the artists, the songs, and how they make you feel. You’re not afraid to look vulnerable. At least you don’t edit out the tears or the times words don’t come easily. You’re an absolutely lovely couple and you’ve become my favorite reactors. You’ve earned my subscription. Dziękuję!

My reaction was the same as yours. In fact, it still is. Lemmy made an epic song, and Sabaton did it justice. I also love them for all the references they made to Lemmy and Motorhead. The bus, flag, and bandmembers carrying his photo.

  • @lasmirandadennsiewillja9435
    @lasmirandadennsiewillja9435 Рік тому +5

In my opinion, both songs are beautiful in different but equal ways. Lemmy's "1916" is a funeral march, expressing the deep sadness that this man-made tragedy created. Sabaton's "1916" is a protest march, expressing anger (which, I think, becomes clear when his voice grows stronger, almost belching the lyrics, instead of quiet and sad when the young soldiers die) over the pain and injustice that the victims weren't given the time to feel.
Both are equally important and justified feelings and I think it's wonderful that now two songs exist that do them justice.

It's fine to let out the emotions sometimes; not a bad idea at all. I saw this performed live in Leeds last week, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only 14 when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Lest We Forget.

there were also Aces in Exile, as well as Ye Olde Pub from No Bullets Fly.
Almost every character and scene were connected to some Sabaton song in one way or another.
This is also I think the first time that Sabaton did second song about the similar event. At least that's how I see it (1916 tells similar story as Price of a Mile, but from different, more spine-chilling perspective)
Difference is that 1916 is about Somme while Price of a Mile is about Passchendaele. And the it hits you when you realize that entire war was like this, not only these two battles...

The Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont Hamel on the Somme, sent 800 men into battle at 9:15a on July 1, 1916. Only 68 answered roll call the next morning, none ever making it near the German front line. Within 15 minutes of leaving their trench, 85% were dead, dying or wounded.

I thought "Christmas Truce" hurt, but this one really brought the tears. Bravo to Lemmy for writing, and bravo to Sabaton for honoring it. I think both with it and "Christmas Truce" they both need their outro music for reflection and to absorb everything in. Tina did amazing work with her cello arrangement on this.
If you look at the names of the different soldiers in the credits they are all real soldiers who fought in the Great War, WWII, or historic figures such as Robert the Bruce or Leonidas. All of them heroes.

Musically, the original is more like the closing credits here with only cello, a snare drum, and Lemmy's voice. Sabaton adds more instrumentation, guitars, and choirs making a grander sound without sacrificing any emotion.
Like how they had Floor singing during the credits for Christmas Truce, that's Tina Gao playing cello during these credits.

Sabaton made a powerful tribute to Motörhead and their great song 1916.
But they did more... A tribute to all fallen solders in history.
All the different soldiers from different ages refer to specific Sabaton songs. The Lady coming out of the dark ally is one of the Night Witches. The convertible car refers to the car where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo which caused WWI. And at the end of the song was "The Old Pub" the B17 bomber from the song No bullets fly...

Overall I still prefer the original version, but this is still an epic cover, and amazing video. I liked their decision to include soldiers from various wars, not just the war the song is about. I also loved the way Sabaton showed respect to Motorhead. The bus at the start was a nod to the classic 'No Sleep Til Hammersmith' album, the flag, the cameo from the two surviving members, and seeing them on either side of what I believe is their old tour manager, holding a photo of Lemmy. Sometimes I make it that far into the video before shedding a tear, but I have yet to make it further. Thank you for another heartfelt and thoughtful reaction. It's probably the video that triggers people's emotions rather than the different version of the song. I still prefer the original. Just because it's not so overblown and relying on a video and the people in it. Lemmy's voice really sounded sad and the celli (or keyboards playing celli) gave the song that special vibe and melancholy. Having a lead guitar in the middle section, hm, I don't know...

2 million Russian soldiers died in WWI. 24 million Russians died in WWII if you combine both civilian and military deaths. There were 14 million civilians killed and 10 million soldiers killed. Neither is acceptable, and, yes, Russia had more soldiers die in WWII than any other country. By far. I don’t know that horror is a strong enough word. China came in second at 4 million soldiers. Not a game anyone would want to play. Japan had 2 million military deaths and then the United States and Yugoslavia at between 400,000-450,000. By-country deaths went down from there. We’re supposed to be a smart species capable of learning by experience. Lest we forget? We already have.

An emotional song/ tribute deserves - no demands an emotional reaction and you both delivered in spades (little Motörhead nod) as usual. Please don’t apologize for being human.
