Love or hate Motorhead, you can't deny that Lemmy was one hell of a Lyricist. Been a great fan of his profound and poignant lyrics ever since I first heard "Orgasmatron". An expected HUMAN reaction - no shame. Cheers!

Lemmy was a very deep man, a hellraiser yes, but also a very intelligent and insightful person - and extremely knowledgeable about history and in particular military history. He was a great man and hugely missed.
Thanks for this beautiful reaction guys, you really feel it as Lem hoped people would.
Just a thought about the way times change, it all seems to be cyclic to me - tough times create tough people who create good times, which create weak people, which create tough times etc etc etc. Then again, what do I know? 🤔

I have been a lifelong Motorhead fan and bought this album when it came out. I have listened to this song more times than I can possibly count, and although it has always affected me, it has never hit me so hard as it did watching how you two reacted to it. You both took all your defences down and let the song go right into your hearts. Thank you so much for showing this song the respect it deserves. I was crying right along with you!

This is a completly different side of Motörhead, and it really, really shows that Lemmy Kilmister was very intelligent and educated beside that badass rocker we're used to see.
Mickey Dee, their drummer once said about Lemmy that he could chat with anyone. It didnt matter, he could converse with the Pope as good as other metal musicians.
Lemmy was a interesting man, and one of a kind.
    Rip mr Kilmister.

it will always boggle my mind why any human would willingly lay down his life for an absolute stranger. knowing he will never be thanked or honored by those he is willing to lay down his life. I still look back and ask myself why did I decide to serve. I still really don't have an answer. but am very proud I did.l people are very different then our grandparents and great grandparents. but I truly believe that there are still some around that would do the same if called upon.

Lemmy was a very underrated lyricist. His lines seem simple, but that's because they are direct. He doesn't use fancier words just to sound smarter. He's very good at choosing his words.
And in his lyrics, you'll find history, philosophy, an anti-authoritarian streak, a rebellious attitude, a party attitude, and dozens of other things all mixed up in his songs.
I recommend you keep going with Motörhead!

    • @jarkkolehtola2919
      @jarkkolehtola2919 Рік тому

There were actually ballads in Motörhead shows - or one ballad, to be exact. They played Love Me Forever live on their 1916 tour. That song was also something quite unexpected and came from the same album. In hindsight it's pretty easy to see that 1916 was musically a much more diverse and bold effort that the band's previous offerings - all of them also brilliant in their own way.

      @herbertwest9626 Рік тому +1

And what a bloody and terrible adventure it was. Thrown into the fire. For the empire? Hm. I don't know. I'd like to think they went to fight for freedom and against terror and oppression. They died a horrible death within minutes, shot down like flies. For a land fit for heroes? Well... For an Irishman the year 1916 has also another meaning. It's the year of the Easter rising. But nonetheless Lemmy's lyrics are wonderful and I tip my hat to those young British soldiers who died at the Somme in France. And that's coming from an Irishman. Peace.

This is not your typical Motorhead song, it is actually more in the vein of Sabaton, tearing at your heart with the sacrifices soldiers make. Wonderfully written, it cuts to the heart of what soldiers in WW1 felt; they were fighting for their country, for the thrill, and for the experience of war, ignorant of what they were getting into. And I agree with your comments about youth; in WW1 thought they were fighting to end all wars; in WW2 youth fought to save democracy. What are today's youth willing to fight for? great reaction, you expressed what we are all feeling. Stay safe, God Bless.

Your response was so genuine and human
EVERY time I hear this song
I cry like Andrei and it is so powerful to me.
When I was at school and a teacher later on
    in a British school
we did the history of World War One
as well as the poetry of the Poets of World War One
Have you ever visited the Cathedral in Coventry
The medieval church / cathedral was destroyed
    by bombing in WW2
They left the shell of the medieval building
and built a new cathedral next door.
    For the new cathedral's consecration
Benjamin Britten wrote his War Requiem
which uses the Latin Requiem Mass
with the poetry of Wilfred Owen
who died one week before then end of WW1
in France. He was 25 years old.
That piece of music - which is huge
    gets me every time too.
You are right to say the lyrics are simple
    and straight-forward and heart felt
Lemmy said he wrote it after watching
    a documentary about the Somme.
It is a very unusual song for Motörhead
and it is one, as I said, I rarely play
purely because it reduces me to tears.

Just think entire towns lost all of their teenage and adult men in a short amoint of time. Just 6 miles of land. The biggest crime their was officers still looking for glory all the way up till the final hours of WW1. Just imagine how many more would have survived had they just sat and waited for the truce go into effect.
