- How Far do I Need to Cast?
Far enough to get it to the fish. In this video I talk about how far you need to cast and the importance of speed and accuracy in fly casting. A lot of people are surprised to learn that speed and accuracy are much more important than distance when it comes to catching fish on the fly.

Just far enough to reach the fish!
Just picked up fly fishing this year, caught my first bass on a grub at very low twilight less than a foot from the bank I was standing on lol.
I’ve been fly fishing a long time in different places and this is one of the best pieces of information on casting I’ve ever seen. All of you out there that are just starting or have never fished in the salt, Alvin is spot on with all of this.
Awesome, thank you!
Well said!
Brother your laugh cracks me up… life is too darn short not to be happy!
The who saltwater fly fishing thing is shiny brand new to me. As mentioned in another of your videos I have been a 4-5 wt. Rocky Mountain trout guy for 45 plus years… so I pick up so much from you videos… non of us are too old to learn more and I appreciate you sharing the wealth of knowledge you have sir!
Also… you have to show me that 100 foot into the backing cast 4 fish on 1 hook technique… I swear I knew that dude fishing the Henry Fork back in the 80’s lol
Always a dude like that somewhere 😂 Thanks for watching!
I know how you feel about people and their 20 false casts. It kills me! This video sure helps me feel better about only being accurate at 40ft or less for saltwater trip this summer. In fact the video is so good I gave it 3 thumbs up 😁
The short game is the money game! Absolutely no doubt about it! I'm 67 yo and had a fly rod in my hand since well before I was allowed to drive. The vast majority of catches have been under 30 feet. Just like hunting- sneak up a little closer before you pull the trigger.
So true!
Alvin, great advice . I learned a long time ago salt water fishing that speed and accuracy pay big dividends. Pick up once cast , bam 💥
Watching me cast can be ugly, but after only a decade of doing it I could already hit a pie plate at 30 feet in one back-cast, 90% of the time. Not a dinner plate, a pie plate. It has served me pretty well since then. Alvin calls out the right attributes of a "good" cast in the right order, of course he does. Digging the channel, Captain Alvin, thank you.
Thanks for watching.
I’ve only been fly fishing for a few years. When I first started I was so worried about distance. My biggest fish to date ate the fly at my feet LOL 32 inch freshwater snook
Alvin you are very correct in needing accuracy over distance. Almost never need a cast over 50'. If you can, that's great but a lot of people start getting tailing loops and their cast just goes to hell when they try to cast any further than that.
Yeah that's so true, thanks for mentioning that.
GREAT ADVISE!!! Thanks as always Alvin. Let's go get some Reds! Seriously - I'll email y'all.
Thanks Alvin. Sometimes moving the boat or wading in a bit closer is the way to go.
A time where a long cast can be helpful is covering lots of open water searching for fish. If you have a target then closer is better
I️ enjoyed this video Alvin! Your videos are really fun to watch.
Glad you like them!
"Put the fly in the water!" - Best quote hahahaha
You know it!
Being a new fly fisherman this video makes a lot of sense. I was so worried about trying to throw all the fly line out like a dummy lol Heck I've even thought to myself I'll never be able to go on a guided saltwater trip so this makes me feel much better. Great video!
Glad it helped!
Flies on the water catch fish. Closer helps to minimize multiple currents and helps control drag. Accuracy matters! Good discussion.
Four stroke limit. Great advice.
Thanks Jim!
Alvin speaks the truth.
Thank you for that information. Getting older so long long cast a little tuff. Thanks Alvin
Another great video Alvin. I agree 100%, accuracy is king!
Great stuff!
Glad you think so!
Agree! Found out after mistake after mistake the less false casts I do the more accurate I am! Wish I had that advice years ago when I first started. But I think by working through the mistakes made me overall better. As normal good stuff!
Thanks for watching!
Another insightful video! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video Alvin! Thank you for those tips on casting, I'm somewhat new to fly fishing too.
Glad to help
Great lesson!
Thanks! 😃
Great short video, thanks for the explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
Great advice thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Sage advise! Gotta get working on my speed & accuracy. Great video!
Thanks 👍
I liked the way this guy presented some very good info a lot ..;) keep it up ...!
Glad you liked it!
Great instruction. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
That fiber optic lamp needs to be on in these vids!
It's on, but for some reason it won't show up in the video.
I can see it, just barely.
LOL 🤣🤣🤣 That outro!
Excellent advice for a beginner like me! Also, the bonus commentary at the end is a great touch...improving your other craft!
Glad you liked it!
Great advice and absolutely spot on. The only add I would suggest is to also work on an accurate backcast for sight fishing reds. It fits right in with speed and is way easier than going across your body (or off hand). Plenty of times the wind is on my strong side and this is the best I’ve found for dealing with fish that show up there.
Love it. The Redfish game can often be 10 to15 foot Ninja Flips as we call them. Being accurate wins every time. Would love to get on your boat one day.
Let me know!
Accuracy for the win! Last year I took up fly fishing for Carp due to staying close to home because of covid. Had a blast figuring them out and my accuracy improved a ton!
Good stuff!
Wise piece of advice here Alvin. Are you going to show how to tie that single hook guide fly to catch four fish in two strips?
Seriously, learning to find where your target hang out and what it wants to eat is even more important than casting. That's why I don't practice in my backyard. Most times I have to back off because I'm stepping on them!
Get that fly in the water! ...not in the air, not in a drag and fish free lawn. LOL
Between your videos and Harry Spears how to build your own skiff, I am getting amped up for some fishing this spring and summer!
That is awesome!
True dat 👍
Send it!!!!
ive gotten into fly fishing with a tenkara rod so i can only get about 25 ft or so. i am having a blast catching fish and being outside so im happy. one day ill figure out how to fly fish with a western rod.
Wow, people can cast past 20ft? Man I really need to work on my casting.😊
Couldn't agree with you more on all of this. Great video.
Thanks for watching!
Hahahhaha, great post credit scene!
Glad you enjoyed it

Nice to see Mr. CT!
I was wondering if anyone would notice. Miss that dude!
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing Me too!
Excellent advice from the master! Around 8:20, did you see that bass hit on the pause as the caster chewed his thumb? Classic case of us thinking we need to manipulate the fly constantly when the fish really wants to eat the dying prey
Man oh man thank you👍
☕️☕️
Any time!
Still learning about casting….. can usually cast 20-25’. Hoping for a little bit more!
Keep practicing, you'll get there.
My buddy and I made a drinking game of tossing a frisbee around his yard and casting to it. Closest gets to drink
I like it!
3 false casts, that's all I do. Every time I try more than that, I mess it up.
This is an awesome video! Super informative, thanks for sharing. I used to think distance was everything when i started fly fishing, then realized accuracy was more important. Started throwing a frisbee in an empty lot and tried to get my fly on it or as close as possible as many times i could. Practice is everything!
Thanks for sharing!
Spoken like a man who has spent his time on the water. Truth.
Thanks Matthew!
I am new to fly fishing , I suck at casting and i need way more practice.
We all sucked when we started. You'll get it.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When I first cast, I'll let it hit the water, before loading again. Should a person false cast all the way to your target? I might land in three different spots before I get to where I'm actually trying to get to? Am I messing up by doing that?
I would try to keep the line in the air. Every time you hit the water you could be spooking the fish.
Time to dust off my fly rods!!!
I always think accuracy is more important than distance, because if you can't accurately present the fly, what good is distance anyways?
first!
This is an easy one. You need to cast a country mile!
I just bought a fly outfit. In order to practice casting, do I need to put a fly on the line? Should I make a fly without a hook?
It does help to put a fly on when practicing. You can use a fly without a hook or a piece of yarn.
@@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing Thanks, your videos have been a great help!
Changing my online name now two strips for fish. Wait that's not damn it Google Voice I hate it when you're funnier than I am
Good one.
Some things can't be said too many times, in too many ways ...
