The reason why yahoo lived so long is because it tricked all of us into setting it as “home page” 😂
i figure that's probably the reason google has 3x as many views as the rest as well and why msn was even on there in the first place.
Trur
msn too
Yep that also explains MSN and Google.
For some reason, Yahoo still shows as my "default browser" even though I've assigned that to Google many times. When i go to my settings and check on browsers, it says Google is the default but Yahoo always shows up once in a while. Gosh, i sound like a boomer who just learned internet terms.

Genuinely surprised that ebay was more popular than Amazon for ten years, and that yahoo peaked above Google as late as 2010
Yeah Amazon is highly area-restricted. Ebay is used worldwide.
Amazon started for just books as well
@@baconinthesoap1 Not sure if that is as true these days as back then. I've used Amazon worldwide. I even had Amazon ship to me in Iraq, and no I don't mean a military address, they shipped to me to an actual street address in Baghdad.
....consider that Amazon used to sell only books, it started selling "everything" only relatively recently, and in people's mind it has remained so for long. Ebay was THE site where to sell/buy stuff.
annd to be honest I still find amazon layout , with so many "internal ads " of stuff you never asked for, very confusing

i know 5.7 billion is a lot, but i’m still actually surprised wikipedia doesn’t have more than that given just how many students use it on a weekly basis
I guess that this number represents all the different devices that have ever entered the website
As a student I don’t think that’s true because teachers don’t let us use it as a source
Students don’t use it lol. Teachers don’t allow it because “anyone can edit it”

I just watched the last 27 years flash before my eyes. The charting is exactly how things went as I remember them. I built OEM computers back in the 90s and helped setup lots of AOL accounts and then AT&T and GTE (Verizon) dial up accounts, then DSL setups and so forth. Wow, awesome video.

I was also surprised to see how long Ask was on there. I thought everyone had stopped using it in the late 2000s. Surprisingly I still see the ask corporate tower whenever I travel to the East Bay. I'm from the North Bay.
I remember them doing dodgy things in the 2000s to lure people to their website
their hits shouldn't have even been counted because it was bogus traffic being sent from their shitty toolbar which came preinstalled or as adware in almost everything. install this program? sure! lets install the Ask toolbar without even asking you..

youtube and facebook ALMOST caught up to google in 2014
Even without looking at the video you can pretty much go out and say that Google is a clear winner. Most popular search engine, is an email provider, owns youtube and also deals with ads.
Nah for me Amazon takes it all, I mean all. Google was in the best position to dare to even compete with Microsoft, it's the de facto search engine, but something is off, on the other side Amazon, oh boy, they diversified it's a empire, and they started by selling books online.
@@josematias2010 Yeah except Amazon didn't take it all lmao
@@ridge4649 being the most popular does not make it the most profitable, and in terms of diversification Amazon did a better job, that makes it more resilient for the future. allegedly 89% of geocities traffic was to AsianPrince213's website...
I almost forgot about the "I have my own website" hype phase.

144 million unque ips is rough like 1.4 billion hits
and yes i mad emoney from ads LOTS OF IT.....

Geocities was the death of the spirit of the early internet.
It got people used to the idea that their personal data is on someone else's host.
It also got people used to putting up web pages and never caring about them afterwards, as a substitute to personal comunication. IRC and the web are from the same year, but now people confuse the web for the net.
