- In this data visualization I only include desktop web browsers, so no mobile web browsers. So the numbers will be different after 2008, when smartphones took off. Like the previous visualization this one goes back to the first graphical web browser, Mosaic. Before Mosaic most users browsed the web either with a text based web browser such as Lynx or using Nexus which had a graphical interface, which was easier to use.

I started using Opera when I was playing Tribal Wars 15-20 years ago. The game needed several quickly launched attacks to conquer another village. A keyboard shortcut to changes tabs allowed launching four (maybe five, just in case, you know) attacks in less than a second. I don't play Tribal Wars anymore, but I still use Opera.

It is due to the closed source model of development, lack of quality addons and plugins that can extend functionality and boost overall productivity.
If you are intent only on browsing html files then Opera alone would do fine.
Firefox rose from Netscape (like a phoenix) because the latter was bought by AOL which changed the licensing. Firefox remained the 'open source netscape'

Opera always has been a browser used by a narrow circle of people.
The management and design of the browser changed a few years back .Big chunk of the original management/devs moved on (to Vivaldi) as did a fair chunk of the userbase who were unhappy with the direction the browser was heading.GX is not what the old Opera browser was (its worse imho)

@Ulu Zulu Partialy true, gov. organizations are BIG users of IE. Lot of the software runs in and requires IE. Why? Becasue it works and there is no need to replace it - that costs money.
Source: Iam sysadmin for small gov. org. with 150 users/stations, that is 150 Internet Explorers for you. Optional browser is allowed, but usualy IE runs all the time anyway since you cant run the programs you need for your work in any other browser (you can but it will end up with failure or some function will not be available, etc.)
Btw. I never worked in company where only included browser is allowed, there is no reason for that. Only reason i can imagine is that you need admin acces to install it, hence the reason for single browser is not so people cant use browser of thir liking, but unauthorized instalation. Iam sure if you talk to your local admins, they will deploy browser you like on your station (if you dont constantly say how they dont do anything and only sit behind screens that is).

Opera GX is so underrated, it has everything Chrome has and many many many many more options. It's a great browser which deserves alot more love.
... and Opera GX allows users to change/customize the install location, (which Chrome does NOT.)
Unfortunately, Opera GX was a CLOSE miss. The fact that you CANNOT REMOVE social media on the left toolbar was a bust. I REALLY wanted to adopt Opera GX, but the fact that you can temporary remove Facebook/Twitter/Twitch from the app sidebar (cant remember exactly), but that they cannot be disabled (according to Opera support directly, and no extensions existed to disable) was a deal breaker. I loved Opera GX, and would switch back in a heartbeat, IF they give user full control over whats on the HUD, which means control over the sidebar apps. This was around 18-24 months ago, and since it was both help.opera and their support forum (also a pain to navigate) that confired you could not perma disable those, i haven't looked back. Brave Browser is a runner up for now, its features become increasingly relevant in todays time.
The majority of people just use whatever is the default browser on their hardware (and with android phones flooding the market, the number of chrome goes up, just like the numbers of Internet Explorer go down as people switched from desktop PC windows to use more tablets and mobile phones instead).
Switched from Google Chrome to Brave about 3 years ago, looove it!
Brave ftw.
I love brave.
Brave is amazing, and being based on Chromium makes the jump from Chrome so easy.
Also it's worth noting that the founder of Brave, Brendan Eich, is the co-founder of Mozilla, and also invented JavaScript... Yep, just that ! So I really have high expectations for Brave to become one of the browsers of the future alongside Firefox notably :)

Ah yes..1994 Netscape Navigator. Those were the days...Before the Dark Times, Before the Empire..
The World Wide Web!!! Eeeeeee-Ahhhhhhh-Bing-Bing-Shhhhhhhhh... the sound of a Hayes Modem connecting... I stared on the blazing 9.6K and quickly upgraded to 14.4k then on to 28.8k. I bought a US Robotics modem in the mid to late 90's that was 28.8K but UPGRADEABLE to 56k!!! But it was over a year before they released that upgrade. Those were indeed the good old days, back when we traded in our pagers for the new high tech "candy bar" cell phones that didn't have screens and just made phone calls. I remember being blown away by "Wolfenstein 3D" being "so realistic" on a 286 back in 1992 haha...

I've been a Firefox user and fan for many years. Some current reasons I prefer it over Chrome (there are probably others that don't come to mind):
● Container tabs, which are awesome! I can keep login cookies separate between different accounts (personal and multiple organizations for whom I do admin) and even be logged into the same site as multiple identities simultaneously.
● Smooth scroll actually works - Chrome is noticeably jerkier when I use my scroll wheel, which I do a lot.
● The option to have links opened in new tabs automatically come to the top, rather than requiring me to click on the new tab to see what I just asked for
● Separate search bar with options to add multiple search engines available by a single click. And it's not just search engines - for example, my extra options include Wikipedia, Google Maps, Google Images, UA-cam, IMDB, StackOverflow, and Amazon.
● Truly non-profit - no corporate profit interests involved.
There was a period a few years ago when FF was slow, but they seem to have fixed it - I haven't had any problems for a long time. The only problem I sometimes have is in dev tools, when styles sometimes fail to load.
Yeah, when Chrome launched there was a MASSIVE speed difference. I proudly switched many people from Firefox to Chrome after it launched, but I'm working to switch everyone back to Firefox because the privacy features are way better.

It seems to me that FireFox is at a serious disadvantage because as we all know IE and Edge come standard with Windows so a lot of people who just don't understand computers just stick with it. Chrome on the other hand is backed by Google and many corporations use it or Edge as their default browser. This can also lead to many people installing these same browsers on their personal computers at home.

Yeah wasn't the smartest business decision. lol
At the time it was agreed on that they vastly overpaid, but the general expectation was that they would at least be competitive. AOL had been such a big deal that for a lot of people they were the internet.
the expectation was that name recognition plus a few tweaks to the software would propel them to the front of the market
the trouble was by that time the name Netscape was already associated with an inferior product much as internet explorer is today to the point where no matter how good the software becomes nobody is willing to risk using it
Just like Microsoft acquiring or working with Nokia, when at that point it was already lost.

Yeah, it's strange that an old browser like Opera that started in 1995 never got more than 2.5% of market share. I have it, but I don't use it as my main browser.
I think Chrome is the best browser to use.
Vivaldi is based on Chrome not Opera.
I use Opera since a heck of a long time now (I think since 2005 or 2006 - maybe longer, I really don't remember exactly how long ago I get to know Opera) and I'm stille very happy with it. It offers a lot of good features meeting my demands.
same here, despite I switched from FF to opera like 5y ago or so
SAME DUDE!
opera users gang
opera is chinese spyware. chrome is american spyware. firefox is open source. for anybody that cares.
Opera is best choice. Firefox is slow as my grandma.
Surprised that Opera has never featured in any higher rankings.
Having followed an IT technical career for over 30 years, I've literally used all the browsers since the early 9600kbps dial-up internet days back in the early 90's.
Opera still remains my favourite on Windoze as well as Android.

I tried many browser, including uc, firefox, brave etc and now im with Vivaldi. The ads that brave cannot block is blocked by Vivaldi, but i see no one mention this browser... Vivaldi is definitely deserves a try
I started on Netscape, then switched to Safari, then to Firefox. The last 10 years on it (and on others if needed).
I moved from Netscape to Firefox to Opera to Firefox and tested many others, but love Firefox
We used to want something perfectly compatible with Windows. Something we thought we could trust to be constantly safe and constantly updated. Then it started bogging down and getting slow. The market shifted. Now we wanted something perfectly compatible with Google. Something fast. Over the decades we didn’t know what we wanted because the Internet itself didn’t even know what it was yet.
I'm really into OperaGX's GX Control which allows me to hard limit resource use from the browser. Pretty handy feature.
But they dropped other things, like the light mode, for some reason.(I think they have brought light mode back by now?)
made the switch from chrome to opera gx its so much better
@@clap_lmao Have you tried the normal opera?
it actually does nothing useful. trash browser
@@flovnes go make one better then
Forever a firefox user. Installed it on every pc I owned in the last 17 years or so :).
Also sometimes uses Opera, one website just won't work with Firefox...
I *STILL* cannot believe that I temporarily worked for Netscape in the early years. I even got a raise from my manager after the first month of work I did. :) Not really clear WHY, but then again, it's been a few decades, so... yeah. But I still remember when webpages were SOLELY text, and also, when HTML "1" was made available. LOL. At one point I was actually trying to optimize graphics for client websites so that anyone using 9600-14400 BAUD modems would end up with optimized downloads. Later on, I even made options where clients could select 'low' or 'high' content (alternate, duplicate pages) if their DL speeds were janky. BOY DID EVERYTHING CHANGE SUPER QUICKLY THOUGH! :D
🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
Opera isn’t dying, it’s actually pretty popular just kinda underrated
Wondering why Brave Browser is missing in this list, one of the best so far, No Banner or Video ads while watching youtube videos or any other sites
I honestly tried using all of them. I moved everything I needed and tried to adapt
I went through:
- Firefox
- Opera
- Chrome
- Opera
- Chromium
- Edge (old)
- Firefox
- Edge (new)
- Opera GX
and now:
- Vivaldi
I also tried Brave for just a month and I occasionally used Tor throughout the years.
Vivaldi is comfortably #1, but if I had to resort to something else, I'd go with Edge.
My third choice would be a lot harder: probably OperaGX, Brave.
Or probably Sidekick, actually, I just haven't tried that yet.
Vivaldi is probably best IMO
Opera is my best. I'll check out Vivaldi.
Vivaldi definitely required a bit of tinkering to get it right, and it isn't perfect, but it's worth the investment if you care
i havent used vivaldi but i'd definetly recommend same as you do. Edge then Opera GX & Brave. Rest is either garbage or dont have much visibility
Edge is best to me
My favorite browser is Opera GX (and that's what I use) because the interface from the browser is Very pretty
Summary:Everyone had his moment, but in the end they all ended up at the bottom
Wow, I just realised how much of an early adopter I was. I started using IE when Netscape was the thing. Then switched to Firebird (and later Firefox) when IE was the thing. Then switched to Chrome when IE + Firefox were the things. Now I'm old and senile so can't be bothered to try any other browsers.
Also kudos to Opera. It's the Tardigrades of browsers.
Opera is Chrome (Chromium-based) it is not its own code anymore - that's why the Vivaldi project took off, but it also uses CHROMIUM - basically there's 3 types of browser CHROME and all its forks and FIREFOX and all its forks and Safari for iTrack's - even EDGE is chromium not MS

@@NotePortal I was joking.
I didn't know Opera was older than IE, like wow.
I used to use Firefox before Chrome took off, but then I ended up switching to Chrome for performance reasons, and I really enjoyed the whole syncing feature on Chrome and I never switched to anything else. Been probably using Chrome for over a decade now. My only critique is the amount of ram Chrome eats; but instead of switching I just kept upgrading and upgrading my PC.
If I were to switch to a different browser, it'd be for privacy reasons.
Yep, and it still sucks.
@@ImpendingJoker The reason I was with Firefox was because it allowed for customizations that IE didn't, and performance wise I think Firefox was better. Its a no brainer with Chrome, you get all the customizations AND a superior performance.
Try brave
Microsoft was found guilty of giving people a free browser.
Opera: let's give our users free VPNS and protections
Users: nahhh
Chrome: now I have smooth borders
Users: OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOD
Okay but it's impressive that Edge is second now, I didn't expect that
people hate on edge when it literally has a high ram usuage preventer built in
I've been using Brave browser for just over a year now, but I still use Edge, mostly at work. I use Edge a little at home on my Linux machine.
Brave is rlly good, it has an adblocker and like very fast loading speed
Making the edge logo look similar to the explorer logo was a marketing blunder by Microsoft. They eventually changed the logo but the damage had been done
Microsoft did a decent work with Chromium based Edge. It works like a charm.
Yea, not really. I also i dont call copying chrome’s code and slapping on a microsoft edge skin a “decent job”
Microsoft didn't copy anything. They used the same open code that Google used.
@@murillogumiero u just spelt the definition of "copying" lmfao
I can't explain why I find these graphs so compelling but good lord do I.

I used several browsers. I started with IE on Win XP and kept with it until I got my first own PC. I then used mostly Chrome but also tried Edge, Firefox and Opera but always had some problem with usability on curtained applications/general workflow. I then started to personalize my Chrome Browser and have been using it ever since.
Microsoft should have kept the original Edge and keep making it better, damn it.
Firefox is the most underrated browser.
No
It is the best browser but it's not underrated tho. People's who use it know what is a good browser. Don't ever use any chromium based trash browser anymore. Gecko on top!

Opera got me in 2002 after I stopped using Netscape Navigator due to it being outdated and lost more and more support.
Been using it ever since and I think it's a shame the browser never got out of it's little niche in the browser market, especially with all the features it had.
Nowadays that it is using chromium as it's base, I see no reason to use Google Chrome whatsoever. Firefox is my secondary browser, as a backup, just in case.
I agree. Opera is in a better place now than Chrome. I started using it recently and switched to the GX version cause it was more my style (after disabling all the SFX). Chrome was eating up my resources like a mf

We all want is that mozila firefox to be popular again
Just only you want
@@nangtamvachuyenhienthuc nope
It's a pretty clear demonstration that being the best doesn't help you be the most popular. If it did then Opera, in all it's forms, would be in the top 2 consistently.
The other thing that is interesting is that Opera for Mobile *was* in the top 2 for almost a decade, but even then it just couldn't get the recognition from the media for that. All versions of Opera (desktop, mobile, light versions, full versions, etc) consistently perform well and are loaded with features that are *useful* and *easy* to use and that *just work* - unlike Firefox and Chrome which are consistently in breaking and being a pain to use more often than they should be. I've been using Opera since it came out and at this point I find using other browsers just painful for how slow and/or erratic they are.
as much i dont like big corporations, i have to say that Edge is for my usecase BY FAR the best browser.
has the same dev features as chrome, supports chromium addons and has several killer features i can no longer live without
text to speech - turns any text into quite high quality speech
Vertical tabs - most internet content is just a bunch of scrolling down, so having more vertical space is very nice
math solver - the ability to just simply write equations instead of using calculator and paper is something i use fairly often
tab groups and collections - managing tabs is something other browsers are picking up too
and the biggest one - unloading unused pages from memory - this results in more than 50% less ram usage for me
Edge is solid, no doubt about it
Melhor não mais ele esta no mesmo nível do crome , safari , firefox
On my ultrawide screen the vertical tabs make so much sense! That's why I switched from Firefox.
Very interesting, thanks for the vid! I use safari a lot bc I have a Mac and my space is limited bc I have several other necessary applications downloaded for school that take up a lot of space. But my preference is google chrome. The only thing I don't like is the privacy issues.
having no space on your hard drive is such a mac thing.
@@sNajlicious It really is ugh
Chrome dominated. I thought Safari would have been a lot higher usage.
Apple is only really big in the US. In the US, Safari has 56% mobile market share and 20% on desktop. Relative to how many different phone and PC companies there are vs Apple that’s pretty dominant for one company. Google/Android’s whole game plan was to make cheaper phones and get them into the hands of as many ppl as possible around the world so they have access to the internet. Apple plays a different game.
The only reason Safari us there bcoz of iphones and Macs. No one really wants to use Safari. It's just that is seamless with iOS. Otherwise Safari will be like Yahoo
I still prefer chrome even in iOS or macOS
I only use Safari on iOS. I use Chrome on macOS.

I used Google Chrome for a long time and now recently just ditched it for Opera GX due to its gamer friendly nature. I wouldn't say it totally replaces Chrome but it comes real close imo. Definitely underrated. Also, with the Chrome Extension Add-On, most popular extensions can be used on Opera GX.
