Most Popular Search Engines 1993-2021
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лип 2021
- In this data visualization video I look at the most popular search engines based on average monthly users, the industry standard when comparing search engines and websites. It does not take into account page views nor unique visitors. Some of the data includes approximate numbers as the data available skipped years. The data comes from Wikipedia, Google Books, Alexa PR, and a few search engine trackers.
I also include screenshots of certain search engines as they looked during that particular year.

Google stopped giving accurate search results in the late 2010s. I use firefox to simultaneously search google, bing, yandex, duck, and yahoo. When I am searching for worksheets to make homework for students, google consistently hides the free content and forces me towards the paid worksheets.
Which one gives the most organic results tho?
@@nekola203 Yandex has the best non-pay results at the top of their search results, but it also has no care about sending you to virus-ridden websites. So, free-movies, emulators, roms, torrents, etc. Yandex is the only search engine that still lists those results.
The fact that Google has half the population using it's search engine and like 90% of the market share just amazes me.
Looks like we got a google fanboy in the house 😂
Mostly people acting like lemmings: everyone uses Google, so everyone uses Google. (I admit, I mostly use it.) It was the same with the switch to Gmail, which is not markedly superior to other Web e-mail. (AOL, for example, actually makes it easier to sort and choose individual elements of a conversation, almost impossible on Google.) But everyone went and migrated to Gmail, so everyone else did. There you have it.
@@stevevasta way to point out the obvious 😂🤡
@@stevevasta I know google isn’t even very good any more
@@Tezarak Google is by far the best if you want first class censorship.
0:26: Webcrawler: First is mine!!

Lycos: Nice one
I'm very happy to see DuckDuckGo climb.
And im not :D
Why I can relate so hard lol
It’s sad to see it go down tho
@@shem_badui Why?
Once you go duck, you never go back.
Yes! It was Webcrawler, AltaVista, and Yahoo in the early 90s for me!
Usme kya function the bhai
Do you remember Astalavista?? Ha
My first adult content when i was young was in a curiosity search for "naked woman without clothes" in Yahoo. I didnt know about browser history, so i got a beating when my mother went to use the computer. It was in 2006 or so.

Microsoft is busy changing the name of their search engine.
Growing up I remember always switching between Altavista and Web Crawler.
Me too lol
Altavista is always on my back
It's been a blessed journey subscribed to your channel and how far you've come. Your work is legendary and have my utmost respect.
Honestly amazed that anyone still is using AOL and shocked DDG isn’t higher on the list
The general public uses Google or Bing, and they probably don't know about DuckDuck.
@@cd-ramos I can’t believe anyone uses bing. What a terrible website.
@@Denali_Rebel It comes with Edge, wich comes with the most popular OS, Windows so it makes sense why it's is so popular
@@cd-ramos not just edge, a lot of search engines have it as the default.
@@Denali_Rebel stfu bing js way better than Google and Microsoft Edge is the best browser
interesting to see aol still holding on in 2021
Seriously. How is that even possible. Who is still using AOL anything in 2021?
@@Bateluer AOL was bought by Verizon so I’m going to assume a lot of AOL’s users found their home using Verizon products and home based internet.
@@Bateluer I still use my old aol e-mail address because every site I have registered to that requires an e-mail address has that listed as my e-mail and I am too lazy to change every one. lol.
I like how AOL was just like “I didn’t hear no bell.” And came back up haha
I’m so sad to see how far Yahoo! has fallen. It will always have a special place in my heart.
They used to be good till the Management changed hands in 2011.
My teacher uses yahoi
When I began using computers, Yahoo! was *the* search engine!
Yandex is far more better than the Search Engines you are discussing right now on your channel and TV.
@@jamesbedukodjograham5508 How so? Curious. I really know no one who uses it (which doesn't mean anything, but that's why I'm curious).
lol fun to learn about the OG's before google. I remember altavista
Amazing video brother!🥰🥰🥰
I remember Ask Jeeves really well early in elementary school brings back a lot of memories as a kid in the computer lab and on the home computer also sad to see Yahoo falling away like that
Wow, I had forgotten that it even existed until now, but I think I can remember actually using MSN search when I was little, because I liked the butterfly. Though most of the other search engines are unknown to me. Like now that "dino: short for dinosaur? Better ask Jeeves" joke from the Simpsons finally makes sense.
Well done! I like your work!
I was making this while you were also making it ahhhhhh.
Also nice music.
AltaVista was the best in the 90's.
Yeah! At the end it was just porn lol
It still is
@@marcoyankovich wdym "it was just porn" how does a SEARCH engine become porn?
Yes and it had its own free internet service! Alta Vista was the best!!! I was so sad to see it go!!!! 😭😭💔💔
Nice vid!
DuckDuckGo a *cult classic with longevity.* Coming for 4th place!
Lol can you see? It was in 6th place lmfao
Never heard of it. It wasn't populair in the Netherlands.
@@LigtvTR duckduckgo is better than google. google uses your data and sells your data whereas duckduckgo doesn't and keeps your searches private. plus it gives better search results than google. google manipulates the search results directing traffic in ways they want people to get results as, whereas duckduckgo doesn't manipulate the search results.
they really need to change the name to something simple. duck duck go is basically the better search engine at least in terms of how it works.
@@thorodin3631 They are slowly manipulating it but you can always go around that by selecting different region. Basically when it comes to certain things, U.S, Iseral, Canada, and UK are the worst settings.
DuckDuckGo > all
I love DuckDuckGo, this search engine is privacely and better than Google. :)
And Brave search is cool too. :D
@@petrj4406 hahaha, duckduckgo and grave are not private at all
currently i use Mojeek (main) and SearX (for complex searches)
I enjoyed the screenshots, BTW, although I only noticed them about halfway through the video.

Why I love the music of the video so much..
My favorites are Google and yandex
One of those is right. Hint, it's not the first one.
Also Duck is pretty good.

I expected DDG to be much bigger. I almost exclusivly use it
Google: Nooooo no monopoly here bra
I use bing.
Same!
Me too. I know Microsoft are meant to be the evil empire but I find their search engine gives me more of the right kind of thing than Google does these days.
Back to old music, it was better.
You are better.
Current music sounds like my grandma's ringtone.
Lol, Webcrawler and Excite, I miss those days......
There wasn't really a lot to see after 2002.Google blew all the others out of the water 😃
They cheated
1999, started using mygo, which was my favorite, then it was msnsearch and google,
Btw yandex is really good for reverse image search
Confirm that comrade! I'm google searcher, but yandex typically brings more valid results with better resolution. Probably yandex also doesn't give a f about CR while google does, and it helps in some way
I remember Altavista , hotbot, excite and infoseek. There were many choices in the 90s. Now we only have google.
It's not only Google. But unfortunately most are based, at least partly, on Google.
does anyone know why did Baidu start to drop so significantly since last year? They lost like 100 million users.
As a Chinese, I can tell you why, because Baidu Search has too many advertisements, and Tencent acquired Sogou Search last year, so people don't want to use Baidu Search.
@@moyuwuhen ok
baidu is the worst engine ever, it can't find anything but Ads, I don't understand how Chinese people use it!

Wow new song.👍
Im sad that Ecosia didn't make it on the list
A moment of silence for my HotBot brethren.
Thanks
People who still use AOL Search today are legends....
How so? Someone new could be using it too. Does that automatically make them a legend?😂
Interesting how in 2020 people returned to “comfort food” search engines. Lots left the competition and went (albeit briefly) back to Bing and Google.
Good video
Question: where did you obtain the data??
Time travel 😂
i would suggest that first baground track was awsome! plz input this track(theme) in your next videos!
Interesting how coming to current era, AOL consistently has 12-13M users. Can we assume these are the remaining old folks subscribed to AOL?
there used to be so much more healthy competition on the web :/
Blame normies for that
Stop using google
@Lightning Bolt Wise decision
I’m gonna switch to yandex
@@UntarLaManteca it's not really a bormie normie thing tbh.
Google has really blown up
Are u surprised ? it’s literally the default search engine on iOS and Android 😂 ur a fool if ur surprised
You forgot Magellan Search Founder: David Hayden
INTERESTING
you can see DDG slowly climbing up. its exploded in popularity in the past 4 years
Google is so high because it comes as the automatic search engine in Android and iOS and nobody cares to change it.
Bing also because it is default with edge on windows. Would be close to 0 if that wasn’t the case lol
Something went very wrong in 2002...
Google: Here hold my beer I'll show you how it's done.
Google is an evil corporation bent on mass censorship
Used to use Alta Vista and Northern Light back in the 90s. Nowadays I use Duck Duck Go and Brave search.
Which search engine does Arnold Schwarzenegger use? . . . Alta Vista baby!!
yandex's reverse image search is way better than googles
surprisingly, it is true
Surprised no one is talking about Baidu!
Altavista always has special place in my heart
Was really hoping to see Ecosia begin to crawl in there. Maybe next year...
Same
Duck Duck Go is gonna climb. Super sad to see Yahoo fall like it has
Who remembers when web pages had at most one relatively small ad banner and it was just a jpg that didn't track you?
Does “Users” = Monthly Active Users?
Also we’re seeing a verticalization of search so it would be interesting to see added search engines like Amazon and also Taobao & WeChat in China.
Lawd, where’s Ecosia?
Until this video, I didn't even know "Baidu" existed.
" How I create videos " please make
Long ago when everyone was using AltaVista and Yahoo I was using Lycos
Until the acquisition by Terra anyway.
On the old Yahoo! you could click on the dot on the logo and it played the "Ya-HOOOOO-oo-oo-oo!" jingle.
Altavista was the way to go in 90:s and early 2000 for me at least
Google came to disturb the system from about the year 2001.
Did u watch the video ? yahoo was on top in 2001
@@Kbxbigbro808 Yandex is much more better than all the systems put together.
RIP Alta Vista. Back then you were the best. You inspired Google.
Where in the world is your data from? Is it only in the USA?
given that Baidu, a Chinese search engine that only Chinese Chinesemen from China using Chinese computers while living in China use, is on the list - no, its worldwide.
Also Yandex, a Russian search engine that only Russian Russians from Russia using Russian computers while living in Russia use.
FINALLY I'VE FOUND IT

the fact that people still use aol concerns me
My comment is similar to yours ;-;
Once upon a time, google was behind yahoo and msn (former of bing)
My personal fav is Ecosia
