I'm less interested in the raw transfer speed, and more interested in the increase in IOPS and how that translates to timeline perf. I liked your comparison between a HDD, SATA SSD, Gen3 and Gen4 drive to really show that latency difference. I'm curious if it would even be noticeable between the 980 Pro and 990 Pro, or any of the other high drives like the 530.

Treat this video like an advertisement. These aren't available yet so obviously Samsung have either sponsored the video or provided the drives with an embargo agreement that limits what you can do with it until X date. It's a 14 minute advert with 3 minutes of actual benchmarks and they just happen to be the most basic synthetic tests that show the biggest increase in speed, when real world tasks like loading up windows or games would show very little improvement.

@@bigpoppa1234 I would have called it more of an overview than an advertisement. I think he's pretty objective in his testing and his conclusions, and you make it sound like he's shilling, to some degree, for Samsung. Besides, I know how this works... I've received review samples. I also know that people really won't see the diff between the two in general usage, which isn't what I was asking about. He did some interesting real world testing between different storage tech in the timeline, which is what I'd be interested in seeing.

Disappointed! I purchased a Samsung 990 Pro 1TB and attached it externally (using a NVME Enclosure and usb cable) so that I could begin the migration process. The Samsung magician migration software did not see the 990, and when I went to device manager and disk manager, this device only shows up as "JMicron Generic SCSI Disk Device." Unable to initialize due to this option not being presented.
Hooked the 990 up via the same NVME enclosure (2280) to another computer of mine, and the result was the same. Puzzling, because I did not have a problem with migrating and installing the 970 Pro using the same process and the exact same NVME enclousure; it even showed up as "Samsung 970 Pro", rather than as a Generic SCSI disk device.
Anyone here have a solution or advice?

Depending what you're doing, you may not notice any practical difference. The super high performance is only going to ever be reached on HEDT or workstation platforms with the available IO lanes, and applications that will use the IOPS and bandwidth. That's where you'll really see them fly. For loading up COD maps or playing Minecraft, it's overkill on an extreme level.

One of the big plus factors of the Samsung drives is their minimal failure rate, which can't be said for most other ssd manufacturers. But the 980 Pro was already borderline perfect, so whatever the 990 Pro may improve, is going to be more or less insignificant. I would rather have the reliability of the Samsung drive, than the greater read/write longevity of something like the FireCuda drive. The FireCuda only really seems tempting if you're someone who regularly installs/destalls games and content and produce a lot of video content as well, like streaming, where you may collect lots of clips on a shorter basis - but for long-term critical data like professional work for clients etc, Samsung all the way.

Hey man just had a question for you. I’m going for a build with super high end specs eg a 4090 and i9 13900K in your honest opinion is the 990 pro SSD super noticeably better then the 980 pro or is it just slightly better. Cause I’ve seen the prices for both of them and the 990 pro is a lot more compared to the 980 pro and I’m just trying to save money. Overall in your opinion is the 990 pro significantly better then the 980 bro or is the 980 pro a good option to go with. Sorry for rambling on man if you were to respond words could not express my gratitude 🙏🏼

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir Рік тому +6

@@shoto_9 Hey there! And I would say no, there is definitely not a very noticeable difference. Definitely not anything worth spending extra for unless you absolutely need the increase in speed for very specific professional work. Most people barely saturate a gen 3 nvme, let alone a standard gen 4 drive - and the 980 Pro is still in the high end. Samsung drives also tend to be greatly upmarked in price when they launch and usually are worth buying +1 year post launch, and this is why the 980 Pro is now significantly cheaper than it used to be.
So my suggestion is, if you want to make your build now, definitely go for the 980 Pro. You will save a lot of money, and 99% of cases you will not notice ANY performance difference. The 990 Pro only really exists so that Samsung by technicality can say they have the fastest drive - but only by a miniscule margin. No reason to pay 50% more for 1-5% more real world performance.
I would only suggest the 990 Pro if you do a lot of video editing and very heavy file handling on a daily basis. Tons of 8K stuff etc. But if you don't have this need, then there's no reason to get it over the 980.

@@shoto_9 I don't have much experience with modern MSI boards so I can't really tell, but from a bit of research it seems to be a decent z790 board. I mean, I am personally running the 13900K on a B660 board from Asus so I don't think the hardware compatibility will be an issue :D
In terms of BIOS, Asus is a brand I certainly can recommend. Imo they have one of the best BIOS setups with some built-in features that not all manufacturers provide (for example I can still overclock my 13900K even though it's not a Z-class board and technically shouldn't be allowed, but Asus doesn't care what Intel says haha).
Either way, I don't think you will have any more risk with the Z790 Edge from MSI compared to any other board in its price range. I did see some people talk about potential audio issues with the ALC4080 Codec that the Edge's soundcard uses, but many of the modern Z690 and Z790 boards use this soundcard so even if there would be occasional issues with audio, it could probably be fixed with driver updates.
If you fancy the MSI Edge board, and it has all the features you need, then I wouldn't hold back on it. If you want to do any sort of major overclocking then maybe look for a higher end board or an Asus variant for their good BIOS features, but it's really not a requirement. The Edge should do absolutely fine. Again though, in terms of specific BIOS issues I do not have any experience with this board so I can't in good confidence give advice here - but personally I couldn't find many people who were troubled by the BIOS.

I just bought 970 Pro 1TB for same price as 980 Pro 1TB, manufactured november 2021, I thought they don't manufacture 970 Pro anymore.. I wanted higher endurance than 980 Pro and have only a 3.0 motherboard (x370 with ryzen 5800x). Also enabled 16% (152 GB) of over-provisioning for even more endurance, the C:\ partition shows 800 GB :)
970 Pro 1TB actually has 1024 GB, not 1000 GB like other 1TB SSDs or hard drives. So 970 Pro shows 953 GB on C:\ partition while other 1TB ssds show 931 GB. Same for 970 Pro 512 GB model, it has 12 GB more than 500 GB SSDs.
    980 Pro 1TB has 1000 GB, so 24 GB less than 970 Pro 1TB.

The 970 PRO is one of the last SSDs to use an MLC controller, which is much more enduring than TLC or QLC, both of which are used in most performance or budget SSDs. The 970 PRO tend to be more expensive than the 980 PRO by a long shot, and I feel glad that you got an excellent bargain and are happy about it 😀

    • @leexgx
      @leexgx Рік тому +6

Big differences 970 pro doesn't have an slc cache (it's MLC based) , so all free space is like a slc cache speed wise, so if you have 500gb of free space you can write at 500gb at full advertised write speed for that whole time at full speed (little slower after)
where as the 980/990 Pro has a relatively small slc cache size before they drop to TLC write speeds and incress in latency
which was not stated in this video, 990 Pro is around 220gb when drive is empty and reduces as the drive gets filled up with 10gb always available when drive space mostly used up, write speed drops to 1.4GB/s once the slc cache has ran out and is in TLC direct write mode, but you would have to be writing constantly to find this noticeable
but again 970 pro has full write speed for whole drive write (something like 3000MB/s constantly)

I have two 2TB Samsung 980 Pros and an 870 Evo on a Gigabyte Auros Xtreme X570 motherboard (very high end mobo). Transferring from the 870 Evo went at around 480MB/s. This is performance In the same ballpark for the 870 Evo's spec of 530MB/s. When I transfer the same 17GB file from one of 980 pros to the other, it went at 2.5GB/s, half of the advertised write speed. The fastest USB3 spec is 20Gbps which is roughly 2.5GB/s - assuming you can find a decent cable and portable drive that even supports those those. My motherboard has heatplates for all of my m2 drives, so cooling isn't an issue, and I've benchmarked my drives with Samsung Magician and they score pretty much where they should be as they are fairly new (April 2021 purchase).
There is one use case I can think of where reading over 10GB+ of data as fast as possible makes sense: game loading. That much data needs to originate from a drive, and today, typically decompress into much faster memory: RAM and VRAM(video memory). And I should mention, it actually ends up not mattering in gaming anyways because that decompression step sort of ruins the capacity to do a straight read into memory so unless you're talking a massive class different in drive speed (HDD -> SDD) you're mostly not going to see a difference in game load time once you have an SSD of any kind. Any other application such as transferring from drive to drive, network to drive, drive to network will be going over a much slower link (or a shared bus), or you will have a slow read/write node on the other end (portable SSD, thumb drive). Essentially, you'll never see close to advertised speed even in situations you think are pretty ripe for it. For those that may be confused and thinking video editing benefits from faster read/write speeds: hardly. A video editor doesn't load anywhere near the entire file's data when you open it up, nor does it ever need to at one time.
These NVMe drives are getting too fast to be relevant unless you have a sweeping upgrade for your motherboards internals and are transferring from internal drive to internal drive. That is PCIe 5.0 and USB gen4. Without having all of those, you should sit tight with PCIe3/4 stuff. With PCIe4, simply having two drives. Maybe DirectStorage will change the game though allowing those insane sequential read speeds to

I'd get one to run my OS or I wanted to buy a new drive (assuming the prices aren't outrageous) but 99.999% of people would never even notice the difference between one of these and a 980, and in most tasks you'd never notice between a Sata drive.

So I will go with the cheaper 980 PRO until I see a new product with about double-speed improvement over the previous gen.

What tower case do you suggest for the RTX 4090? Would it fit in the corsair 5000D?

I'm waiting now for a video with a tutorial of how to install pcie nvme ssd drive in PS4 like the author is suggesting at the end of this video. I'm sure he meant PS5 but still, if he kept it in the video then he must have found a way to do it :)

I need eMLC/MLC NVME with a highspeed transfer. Not TLC like on 980/990 Pro line. They change MLC Nand to TLC Nand since 980 Pro, ☹️.

This video above was posted on October 18, 2022.
In February 2023, people started suffering rapidly degrading Samsung 980 Pro and 990 Pro NvME SSDs.
It was not an isolated issue and Samsung released a firmware update, which was suppose to fix the degradation issue on their NvMe drives.
As of today, Sept 02, 2023, since the firmware fix was released, I have not read any further issues, but in contrast, there are no reports that the firmware fixed the issue either.
In addition, this is too early to tell, but time will tell us if the Samsung NvME drives were saved by the firmware fix or whether the future will face more drive issues because the firmware did not work well enough.
What was faulty at first, will most likely be faulty in the end as well.
That was the reason why I returned my 990 Pro to the store, because the risk was too high the drive would still fail.
Simply this, I am building a new computer and to install a potentially risky drive on the assumption the issue was fixed, was not good enough. I would rather not use the Samsung NvME drives and go with another reliable product.
As a result, I went and got WD_Black SN850X instead, it is comparable, just as good and is not suffering firmware issues.
