  • Hey Everyone,
    In this video, I share my experience of green laning in Derbyshire with my partner Mike. We both rode a Royal Enfield Himalayan 411, a versatile bike that can handle any terrain.
    I'm not a natural offroader as you know, but I wanted to challenge myself and see the beautiful scenery of Derbyshire.
    Mike was my guide and he showed me some of the toughest green lanes in the area. It was a struggle, but also a lot of fun!
    Watch the video to see how we did and what I learned along the way. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more videos like this!
    I hope you enjoy this vlog!

Well done for keeping going, many people would have bailed. Well done to the Enfields. They look heavy but also solid. You earned a lot of respect for doing that 👍

    One tip I'd have (and you might be doing this already and I'm just misreading the engine sound, if so, forgive me!) is to avoid using throttle / brake, as an on/off when you're feeling nervous. Try to focus primarily on clutch, raise your revs (as high as you like, with the clutch hovering at the bite point it won't matter), and feather the clutch to modulate your speed. This way, you won't actually come to a stop when you're reacting to changes in terrain etc (where all that weight will immediately want to go sideways unless you happen to have stopped in a perfect situation). It's very unnatural to leave the safety of the brake (you can have it primed as a bail-out) at first, but it'll accelerate you finding more confidence as the bike will behave a bit better in most situations. One thing I do as a first step reminder is to keep the revs up slightly higher than you'd think to have it, as that forces you to keep the clutch in the game. Also really helps avoiding any situation where the bike might stall, but to be fair the Himalayan is fairly forgiving with that, for better or worse. Worthwhile practicing this one in a controlled setting to reset any defaults you've built up from road riding, as this technique isn't really as necessary there. Great ride, you've covered a whole bunch of lanes I have yet to try and I live here!

    • @marcbrasse747
      @marcbrasse747 6 місяців тому +1

      Totally agree. What you describe makes the rotating engine parts, especially the crankcase, work as gyroscopic weights stabilizing the bike. I already advised Kate to train on a more forgiving stretch and try to get some sort of routine by repeating it.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 6 місяців тому +1

      @@marcbrasse747 ah nice, I mean there is a baptism of fire of doing it all on the real stuff of course and ultimately Kate did get through it all! But yeah, if you start to lose your confidence that way it just extends the whole learning process or maybe puts you off completely.

    • @nomading_in
      @nomading_in 6 місяців тому

      I think this is maybe the number 1 area of what makes learning off road on an adventure bike so hard. It's intimidating at no speed, it's not hugely confidence inspiring at low speed, and it just conspires to keep you in that zone where everything is hard (because you know dropping it is an absolute pain /a risk). As Kate said in the video, separating what you logically know you need to do and what your body actually does initially is super difficult. I'm still on the cusp of that zone a few years in!

    • @m2menuiserie540
      @m2menuiserie540 6 місяців тому

      7:21 Good advice nomading, but she's struggling with the clutch on that bike. I don't think the lever is adjustable on the Himmy and I suspect the clutch springs are relatively heavy. DCT Africa Twin instead? I jest.
      Notwithstanding that, her skills have definitely improved over the 3 episodes.

    Re the "amusing" vans, a couple of jobs ago I had to deal with a company called Mycocks who sold electrical components, who's receptionist had spent all day, every day, for the past twenty years, answering the phone, "Hello, Mycocks electrical?" Oddly enough, she had absolutely no sense of humour left...
    You did great Kate, much better than my few excursions off-road. All your long-ingrained road-riding instincts are wrong for off-road and you can't just reprogamme yourself in five minutes, however much you want to. I'm told that much the same applies to planes and helicopters: the longer you've been flying fixed-wing, the harder it is to convert to choppers.

    Kate, I'm man enough to say that you've got balls the size of church bells, because stuff that for a game of soldiers for an "afternoon's fun"!. I can hear the nervousness and hyperventilating of fear of something that you're not used to doing. If you don't do any more of these "fun day outs", I wouldn't blame you. That's as much fun as learning to swim in the deep end. ❤

    As always Kate a really cool video Series! Just been binging youtube with dad :) after his biopsy.
    Those lanes are tricky for sure an i think you did great, I did a few of them myself when i owned the 300 Rally an turned round on a couple of them. I think its good to show stuff like this which is what I tried to do as well as going from road an track riding, did me a hekkin confuse with the different skills and sensations on a trail bike.
    I always think lighter is best for the trail riding stuffs some of our green lanes are almost single track in places. I think if i was to ever get really into it again id try get something around 130kg wet, watching Nathans Milwards ccm video was interesting to see how happy he was in it yet for my riding mix Ive just got a T7 for our Norway an Iceland trip :3 an hopefully it should be suited to the longer gravel roads an stuff out there in Europe.
    Same weight as the Himmy, Japanese reliability an according to Yamaha the lowering kit gets it down to an 840mm seat height 20mm linkage an 20mm or so on the seat which should be good for my dad :)
    I really thought RE missed an opportunity to give everyone a much lighter 411 or something as light as the 300 Rally or 390adv with the 450 launch.
    Each bike all have different experiences an capabilities an i always find it super interesting to see others takes on bikes ive owned in the past keep up the brilliant vids Kate 👍😮

    I mentioned in a previous vid (when you were up near Rivi) its so much easier on a lighter bike. The Himalayan is a heavy bike at 191kg. I know you get what the dealer has given you but I think if you managed to get hold of a typical 250 enduro it would be so much better for you A ktm freeride for example weighs under half what a Himalayan does and has a relatively low seat height you’d find things so much more manageable. Great job sticking with it 👍

It seems that the clutch reach and exhaustion was real taxing for you, and it’s hard to stay on the gas and trust the process when you’re physically worn out and trying to navigate unfamiliar and challenging terrain at the same time. You can tell that wasn’t easy, especially with the weight of that bike, but you did well considering, and will be better going forward.

    Well done, i have to say you would have been much better off using the UCR around minninglow area etc as they are beginner/novice/heading to advanced novice and much much more enjoyable for someone like you, they would provide enough of a challenge but also raise confidence levels, they are wider, less rough, less scary terrain, no boulders, wet roots and so on - taking you down cumberland cottage at 15mins - 25 mins is a perfect example, just not beginner friendly. Tom has given Mike a good route for riders who are used to it - some of the lanes you have done are challenging and you got through them but the danger is you didn't enjoy this half as much as you could - the route should have been prepped for YOU rather than an off the cuff route that many of us use. If you ever want another crack of the whip on some lanes you would really enjoy in the area , let me know, i guide groups across the UK in and out of TRF all the time.

    Watching this series of videos has reminded me of why off-road motorcycling wasn't for me. I'm glad I had a go at it, but in the end I wasn't having a good time. I think my problem is that when I am on two wheels, I like to be on paved roads carrying some good speed and being in the twisties. I think I would enjoy off-road more in a side-by-side, taking my time and enjoying the views without having to worry about keeping a bike upright.

    I know that those are loaner bikes Kate, but you do show that one should set up the controls for yourself to fit the bike.
    It's amazing the amount of riders that do not take the time and some $ to do this but add on accessories that don't help in riding comfort and control.

    Mike, you better know how lucky you are. My wife will not touch my bike. And off-road is off the table. She has her licence but she is afraid of Florida roads.

    when you are on a hill and stall, it might be easyer to roll a bit down and try a drifferent line. you stalled for a reason.
    it's easyer for mike, he got longer legs and more experience. and he changed the line..he was standing on his right leg while turning the bike around it and than driving off.
    you did a good job, you just lack experience. and experience is something you get after you need it.
    the ktm flying by was carrying momentum and having his butt over the rear wheel to keep traction. but with that speed you only touch the top of the stones making it a smoother ride. and the ktm has lots of suspension..making it easier.
    it's more difficult to learn from a partner, beceause they try to push you more and are eager to make you reach their level.
    With ruts, you usually choose one and let the bike follow it, if you try to steer you fall. hang back a bit and the bike will try to stay upright, try to "let go of the handle bar" allow it to move aroud a bit.

    Kate learn to stand up on the pegs on the rough stuff lot easier on you and the bike as your knees absorb some of the weight instead of the springs and the wheels taking the full pounding.

    The main reason for riding a motorcycle is enjoyment . This didn't look like you were enjoying it. I put over 12,000 miles on my Himalayan and never went offroad with it . I enjoyed it for what it was, a motorcycle . I bought it for it's simplicity and I actually liked the way it looked , industrial , plus it still looks good even when it's dirty .
