He has an AMAZING voice. The emotion it could convey is unreal. Mick Jagger's voice deserves criticism NOT Robbie Robertson. Fell in love with this album in high school. Every track is a gem. Never gets old. Especially on road trips across the country in vast, wide open spaces. RIP.
Such an incredibly beautiful song. Nobody could have sung this as well. I remember playing it again and again, years ago. It breaks my heart. Rest in peace.
First ever heard this song was the Rod Stewart version, which I loved. Recently however, since Robbie's passing, I purchased 3 of his solo records. Now my heart breaks. I love this version so much more...and now enjoying all of the man's music. Thats Peter Gabriel on the piano! Just gorgeous. Makes me so sad that I'm only now discovering the music of Robbie Robertson...and that it took his death to get me to notice. But, the older we get, the more we slow down and listen, and the more we learn. Very grateful.
You took us to a whole other country, one I am still traveling and exploring. An amazing legacy of stories and music at the heart of America. You will be deeply missed.
Robbie continues to teach me things even in death. As I mourned I stumbled on this song, not knowing he wrote it. I left a "Phil and Friends" show somewhere on the west coast with this song stuck deep in my skull after hearing it for the 1st time in the early 00s. Since then I've been giving Ready Kilowatt full credit for that beauty. How did I miss that for years? In the year's after The Last Waltz I listened to Danko and Helm, but I didn't follow Robbie onto the reservation musically. Now, with a heavy heart I head for Hoopa Valley first, I'll keep lookin' til I find his spirit running with the last of the wild horses.
In 1977 I had the Honor of meeting Robbie at Shangri-La studios in Malibu... Quite a funny man , He gave me a little tour of the Studio - introduced me to Larry Samuels..owner at the time...We hung out and got high in the boardroom while Jennifer Warnes was recording - Cut through the heart... Another day , we walked up the hill, he showed me this little red barn....they used to film MR.ED the Talking Horse at Shangri - La before it was a studio ranch but after it was a Hollywood Bordello.... I remember Robbie as a cool Cat..
This is incredibly beautiful.... the arrangement has just the right mix of order and chaos, space and texture ... Robbie's voice is perfectly imperfect - rough, elegant, sliding, sensual, emotional, present. And the lyrics - beautiful antithetical metaphors juxtaposed with the raw yearning of the heart and soul, instinct and spirit.
Agreed. Blew my young drumming mind all those years ago after I bought it, especially since it introduced me to the sublime Manu Katché on drums and a deeper appreciation for Robbie. I thought it was a special album, my brother hated it. His loss.
I am with you, laughingcat. I bought this album in 1987 for "Showdown at Big Sky"; the cool radio stations and VH1 were playing it. I came to cherish every single track. 15-20 years later, my two children knew every song because I was still playing the CD on car trips short and long.
Masterclass in musicianship production and CLASS Robbie and George Harrison seem to be connected in this. They both believe in getting it perfect before releasing it
Art like this makes me question my agnostic beliefs. A real shame this life is likely once around the track and RR and others are forever no more. Thank you again Robbie for so enhancing my one time around. We came close (for a time I was a friend of Garth and Maude and stood next to you at Rick's funeral) but sadly for me our paths never intersected again.
This one really hurts, Your music has moved me decade after decade after decade. Truly timeless and inspiring. Can't remember a time when your music wasn't on the top of my stack of albums, Cassettes or CD's. Your music will live forever. - Rock In Peace Robbie
Rest in peace, my brother. I wish I could have met you and tell you how much I love you and your music. You were a stand-up guy for your music and First Nations people. You were a great human. I send my condolences to your family and friends.😭😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔💔
It is great that Robbie is both First Nations Canadian as well as Jewish as he can draw on being part of the wider North American culture but can still pull from First Nation feelings and culture. He can go into both worlds and relate. Being a First Nations person also gives him an authenticity other musicians cannot relate to as well. I was 18 and living in Ottawa when this album came out. I used to hear it on FM but because it wasn't "mainstream" enough and he was 44 at the time I did not appreciate it as much as I should have back then. Pure genius and a concept album. He sang and wrote from the heart, not to try and write popular "hits" like younger acts did in 1987 and still do today in 2018 like Drake, Katie Perry, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna and others.
I remember a rainy day in 88, when we were young n still in the business of romance. I was sittin there on the old back steps. I had a little perfume bottle and a bowl of rain. It took over an hour to get an inch of rain into that bottle. So I went in an gave it to Ed, my husband..."A bottle of Rain" I said. And he just smiled and tilted his head as if to say. "Of course it is". I'd like to say we made love...but I really don't remember...but you had your ultimate prize...a bottle of Rain. The rain let up, as happens in Texas and you went to work at the Plant the following early morning, which also happens in Texas a lot. You were just a little late coming home...no worries. But when you came in the door, I was SHOCKED to see u carrying the feather end of an old beat up Broken Arrow..green, it was. Your story was that you saw it on the shoulder of Hwy. 225 and pulled some awkward driving tricks to get to that arrow. Because, u were prone to lack imagination [ur only missing magic], I have never had reason to doubt. We had given one another a broken arrow and a bottle of rain. Years went by..I sought after them Drops of Jupiter, and you rode "The Ghost Train" with Jupiter Ray. We were broken apart by the lures of the world. Ten tired, disillusioned years later, we were in the same bed, holding our grandkids. So much livin behind. And you were only 54 when the angels took you away from us in 2014. Our daughter and I passed by to say farewell, and she, being 35 put a large bottle of Rain in your hand and laid half a broken Arrow beside you. She gave me the feather end.
Thank you for sharing. I'm 36 and yesterday it'll be 20 years since my dad passed away. Now I'm almost the same age as when he passed. I always see that 42 year old man in my dreams....
It does seem more genuine, not just words but...."hot summer breeze", "count the beads of sweat that cover me" lots of poetic nuance from RR's genius and out through his pores. Perfect.
I went to NCSU School of Design 100 yrs ago. My senior project was a collection of images projected on the wall of a building using a combination of this and "Down by the lazy river". Got an A and smile everytime I hear anything from Robbie or The Band.
this album gives me chills. i have so memories attached to it. i have so many connections to the words and the production. thank you Robbie for leaving us with this.
I got to meet Robbie at the old Hard Rock Cafe in Toronto prolly early 2000s and Dan is a good friend of mine! Amazing people who have the gift of Harps of the Angels!!
Having a hard time tonight with a death anniversary and deep sadness 😢🥀💔I stumbled across this and the tears are just flowing. This song is truly touching....😰
May he rest in peace. He is now another unseen WARRIOR fighting this BATTLE until we will HOPEFULLY ALL meet again! The path is NARROW to get to HEAVEN!
When Robbie died, everyone on my Southern Oregon reservation cried....
✨🕊️🙏✨. Thank you for that, from your central Oregon neighbor. Stay blessed.
The first song I turned to today -- the day of Robbie's passing. No more bottles of rain.
😢
💔
Many complain Robbie cannot sing. Yet, no one else could deliver this achingly beautiful song the way he did.
I've always loved his voice!!!

Yea I agree. I bought this CD over thirty years ago and Broken Arrow still sticks in my head. Love it.
I can’t believe he’s gone. RIP.
I’ll have to get to you if I have to crawl … Robbie, thank you for the music. Rest in Perfect Peace.
"I'll get to you if I have to crawl" oh my. Possibly the most romantic line in a song ever. Thanks Robbie.
So true!
Such an incredibly beautiful song. Nobody could have sung this as well. I remember playing it again and again, years ago. It breaks my heart. Rest in peace.
R.I.P Robbie thanks for all of the beautiful music . The world was blessed for it . May God be with you always .
💔RIP & Thank you. I’m still waiting for someone to send me a bottle of rain. Thank you for your beautiful brain❤
A long time favorite. You will be missed. RIP Robbie.
So beautiful, going to be my wedding march song. My fiancée is Native American and turned me on to Robbie Robertson's solo album. 😍
Rod Stewart really made the song widely known, but Robbies original is magic.
The Grateful Dead even played it
Rod had more powerful vocals to make it a mainstream pop song. But as you said Robbie's the true writer and man.
Robbies version blows Rods away
I could never stand Rod's. It just doesn't sound right.
if only Phil could actually sing, ( yes I did used to yell, " Let Phil Sing" )
One of a kind 💖🙏 thank you Robbie Robertson mohawk brother 🙏🧡

Being a local musician in my 20s here. In Cincinnati, 1987, I played the hell out of the album.
Farewell Robbie...you really embraced your culture and your ancestors.😢😊😊😊😊😊
I love this song & album . Brings back sentimental feelings & memories back to 1987 . ❤️
A great album. So good. Peace and love ❤️ thanks 8888
YES!! Reminds me of a precious, so-so-so-handsome guy I was in love with back when! This and "Somewhere Down the Lazy River"
Agreed. I was in college and had a friend who introduced me to it and I fell in love with it. It’s one of my favs still today.
I'm on a RR binge after hearing of his death, he was our Canadian Bob Dylan people with songwriting like this are few and far between.
@@natevm7888 amen.
Robbie Robertson has a beautiful soul that sends a burst of sunshine into the world every time he sings and plays.

Gone now. Thanks for your gifts to us all, Robbie.
His soul speaks through his song. This cover feels more realness, more rawness. Beautiful...R🕯P Robbie.
I never heard the Rod Stewart version or I selectively erased it from my musical memory😂 Sail on Robbie your talent was a gift to be treasured❤️
This song/album had alot of great names attached to it. And you can hear it.
