    You neglected to mention that drywall has to be primed and painted to prevent discoloration and deterioration. That cost time and money as well

    I did a 30 by 40 shop with 12 foot walls all in OSB. 1/2 inch drywall was a dollar a sheet more money than 7/16 OSB. OSB is tougher and you can put a screw anywhere to hang something. If you paint it the fire rating would increase slightly. I am more concerned with knocking holes in walls of a shop and hanging things on the wall which I will do quite often, than I am with the odds of a fire.

      May i ask, is OSB the same as board & Batten?, as far as in a manufactured home?

  • @Grumpy_Wolf
    @Grumpy_Wolf 5 років тому +9

    Not sure where you're getting OSB, I just recently remodeled a garabe, osb was 7.50 a 8 foot sheet, drywall was 11.28, these were both about the same thickness and at home depot. Another Thing you need to know is if you get drywall wet you are going to have black mold. I have dealt with that in my house and its a nightmare.

    several things, who is going to torch their garage wall? and your pricing is wrong. home depot OSB is about $8.50 for a 4x8 sheet. 1/2" drywall is about $7.24 however drywall needs mud and tape and paint.. but osb doesent. overall OSB is going to be cheaper to install. and many homes are sold with unfinished garages, where you have exposed osb anyways. so the way i see it there is no downside to OSB for a garage.

      Exactly. But, you forgot about how time consuming it is to mud and tape drywall PROPERLY. Gonna take you 3 days to do a proper job. So, drywall(because of its process)is much more expensive

      And drywall requires more meticulous painting (can leave OSB bare OR roll on some paint). And drywall is so damn froofie - like being in the house and wife saying, "Watch the walls! You'll ding them, or fingerprint them, or stain them, or... - AAAGGGHH!!". Yeah, I'm doing something besides drywall. I like the idea of exterior siding like good ol' T-111. Hard as nails, slather on some paint, drill it, knock into it, kick it when your wide kicks you out of the house for messing up the nice, smooth painted walls and it won't dent...

      regarding the torch, accidents happen. but other wise yea

    • @BobC59
      @BobC59 5 років тому

      Turns out I'm going with SmartSide for interior. Woodgrain with groves every 8 or so inches - looks kinda like T1-11 but smoother and thinner and not absorbent. Comes primed; One easy coat does it! I used this in my basement to cover some exposed insulation in a partially finish area and it looks great. Easy to put up, primed, resists water... Yeah, that;s where I'm going

  • @terapiu

    Might be a little late(lol) but you can always hit the osb with some fire retardant...and have no worries.

  • @citrusdrops3

    Sheet rock is only 60 cents cheaper than OSB at the moment and I'm only using it for a building that's insulated with a pool table. I think ill go with the OSB. Way more stable to hang stuff from the walls also without using your studs.

  • @corytenhundfeld1553

    Drywall is Less expensive but less supportive to hang things on, including mud and tape and labor costs more in the end.

      Adding blocks prior to installing drywall would be a good solution around it. If one knows before hand what the measurements are for things they want to hang this would be the best bet.

    I just got 7/16 4x8 OSB 8 bucks a sheet , Drywall 8 bucks a sheet . OSB outdoors not painted or covered on the house wall 17 years swelled 1/8th inch turned black in the sun, I ran a outdoor electrical outlet cut the hole it was like new under the 1/8th inch of swelling after 17 years , i had planned to cover the wall with siding , but a carpenter never gets to work on his own home. Time and money . as for fire yes it will burn but has to have a excellent to get it hot enough to catch fire , gas, lighter fluid, wood stove coals . it will not burn from a smoldering cigarette . Its fine for Shop or Garage exterior walls on a home , not in the home but I see people use it in the home and paint it . I can send a link for the price Menards or True Value 7/16 4x8 '

    Drywall doesn't burn, but show me a house built with bare, seamless drywall. Electrical fires often start inside the walls... where all the wood is. Other fires burn your carpets, drapes, cabinets, furniture and the flames easily get through all the gaps around switches, outlets, light fixtures, etc. And it seems silly to worry about wooden walls when hardwood floors are common.
    Another advantage to OSB is that it offers slightly better soundproofing.

    Nice. I play with fire a lot in my shop, 5/8" thick sheetrock has a one hour fire rating and its fiberglass reinforced. 5/8" is code for most apartments, condos, etc. if not the complete building could go up, not just one unit.

    Drywall in a shop isn't a shop it's a she shed. Put up osb, plywood, or steel panels and make it a man cave. Who the hell holds a torch against their walls? As a former fireman I have seen steel panels burn through on a shop ceiling. Also, I just purchased 7/16 osb for $8.25 per sheet. Drywall was over ten bucks......

    Two different animals...
    Osb... Burns...
    5/8 inch drywall = 1 hr fire rating.
    Osb= (wood) r-1 per inch thickness
    Drywall 5/8 inch = r-1..
    So what do you want from your wall...
    Something you can beat up...
    Or something that has fire resistance..

    If I could afford it, I'd do 7/16 or 1/2 osb with 1/4 drywall over top. Tough and (with no rats and a good electrician) fire safe walls that are aesthetically pleasing. Top the dream shop with a decent size and style baseboard or maybe wainscoting and that's all folks. Other than the co$t and time spent keeping it lookin' prudy, anyone here see a down side to osb and sheetrock layering? Other than what's mentioned...
