Why is houses looking the same bad?
They used to build rows of identical housing in a neighborhood.
It dropped the cost of housing considerably.
You could just fabricate the same wall 500 times instead of measuring and cutting then reading the blueprint. It took half the time to build and was just as good value for the consumer. But people's ego requires them to differentiate themselves from others even if it cost them thousands and thousands of dollars.

These aren't McMansions as I know them. They have coherent styles and shapes, balance, proportional scale, things line up, the roofline isn't a horrible mess. They don't use a random piles of siding types and materials. And they don't have those horrendous temple-scale doorways made of plastic foam. Developer built homes may share some aspects of McMansions - looking similar to each other, and in some cases being bigger than the average house, but sharing some similarities doesn't make two things the same.

I know this is just the middle-upper class shown in the video, but even households from lower working class backgrounds have houses larger than anywhere in the world it seems. I don't know it just always makes feel queasy knowing how materialistic it all is and how much energy goes into fuelling these huge houses/all the raw materials and possessions to fill the house.

Does anyone know anything about real estate who's commenting here? In neighborhoods, what keeps values of floats partly is the idea of a homogeneous neighborhood, houses that look relatively similar with no one breaking out of the mold. As far as price, an empty plot of land could easily command a million and a half, so building an actual home will immediately command at least a couple million. A custom home? 3 to 4 million.

I don't think they look THAT bad. If there were only one of them you'd think it's a nice house. They only look bad because there are a bunch of them so they look more generic. I wouldn't even call them McMasions. They don't conform to the various stereotypes that McMansions are known for, like gaudy columns, mismatched roofs, and spirals.

People really have no clue what they’re talking about, or the hoops you have to jump through to build a custom home In those kinds of neighborhoods. Having models already pre approved by the historical councils makes everyone’s lives easier and makes the project more cost effective.

So let’s talk about how far homes have come in the last 50 years. Lead paint, gone. Popcorn ceiling with asbestos, gone. Superior insulation in walls, attics and better quality windows make these larger home cheaper to heat and cool than older, smaller homes. They are much more energy efficient while also allowing more natural light in. Also, they do last if you take care of them. My 2003 home is a thousand times nicer than my 1960’s home was. It’s almost 20 years old and it’s just like the day I bought it. Most people simply don’t know how (or are too lazy) to maintain a home properly.

So construction people get employed . The houses look good to me . They certainly are not an eyesore .Landscaping people get employed .Nice look to the area .So tell me again why there is a problem . Some people have a lot of money and they can afford it . The city gets more tax revenue as that new huge home gets taxes higher .So again is this a problem ? Some architects do not like the style ,well that's their opinion . In the Hamptons a lot of people rent out the homes when they are not there . So the market for rentals is the big house with a pool. Vacationers spend money on eating out and tourist attractions . So again the local economy benefits . Problem? The locals see their house values rise .Problem? Some people feel the big homes change the area . Well others might say the area needs revitalization as the older homes are looking shabby .

    • @glanni

Some people don't want a bunch of rich people in their town because it can negatively impact their own life. For example, rich people have very different spending habits than working class people and they can and will attract companies that cater to them. Sometimes this makes living more expensive for everyone.
When rich people are moving in those areas this also creates a class division that hasn't been there before locally which most poor people wouldn't like, obviously.
And of course, many people will be jealous. Jealousy isn't good or nice but it is understandable that people who work to get by in a shabby one-story building get mad if suddenly a pretentious McMansion sits directly in front of them, including a bowling alley and snobby people.
But fact is, if more money is around the whole area becomes more expensive, and people who don't have a lot of money used to profit from living in rural areas where they might need less money to live. They lose this advantage and might need to move if they can't afford living there anymore.
I don't want to blame the guy personally, he does his job and makes money, but his actions may have negative consequences for the people living there, and he doesn't care.
