Have you ever heard of The Hamptons? The history of the Hamptons as a dwelling place for the really wealthy members of society goes as far back as the late 19th century when the community went from being a farming community with great potato grounds to a popular destination for the wealthy.
The Hamptons housed some old money elites such as The du Pont family, The Ford family, The Rockefeller family, and many others-especially the Gardiners, who even owned an entire island in the Town of East Hampton. In this video, we will look at the history of the Hamptons and the mansions owned by old-money elites and located in the prestigious Hamptons.

Many of the photos are of homes not in the Hamptons. Some of the stories as well. The Whitney estate in Old Westbury is only about 100 miles west of the Hamptons!

As a NYC native and one who attended boarding school there -- place your money elsewhere --- there is one road in and one road out -- it is a driving nightmare. Unless you are flying private -- don't bother -- as the whole jaunt is an exercise in frustration!

If I had a penny for every time I heard “old money elite” I could probably afford a place in the Hamptons.
Also, there’s more images of places other than the Hamptons (old NYC now demolished mansions, Newport RI, France, England, etc) than the Hamptons themselves.
Other than that, nice enough video, but I would have preferred a closer look at a few selected properties, rather than a machine gun of unrelated photos and clips.

Francis Bell is my Dad's Great Aunt.
Her husband was the heir to estate.
I'm looking for old photography of The Estate. Maybe find a picture of them or of their home. I did find the picture of their Broadview home overlooking Gardiner's Bay. Dennistoun is listed as a fireman at his firehouse on his property in the 1930s.

At 6:02 when you show the Astors, Vanderbilts and ‘Whitneys’, the picture of the Whitney family is literally the Bush family. I find this channel so interesting, but these mistakes are frequent on many of the videos.

Looks nice. I really think it would/could be nice to live there. But only if the circumstances are nice and great. I think about decent neighbors and intelligent people. I mean having rewarding exchanges is an important issue for me. Private living - and social connections of something we share and love. And "yes", there should be a good and FAST public transport connection to NYCity and to Boston.

It’s a cultural practice in the United States acquired in time though not necessarily over the number of generations as overseas and rarely connected to title. Positions of course but connections to titles are rare and only by happenstance of marriage. The cultural practices are based on noblesse oblige standards, social grace, education and philosophy.

It’s an Americanism, as it were, to refer to rapid industrial accumulation of wealth as “old money” compared to some European families wealth that was earned over 1000 years.

    • @stefmercs9810

It’s old in relative terms. After all, everything is relative. What seems old to an American may seem relatively new to a Brit. And what seems old to a Brit may seem relatively new to a Roman, Greek, Persian (Iranian), Egyptian, etc.

Many of the old English families who arrived in the mid 17th Century still own vast acres of farmland. They’ve selectively sold off parts for development and are indeed quite wealthy. The Halsey’s, Hallock’s, Young’s, Latham’s, Tuthill’s, Corwin’s, Warner’s, Mape’s, Well’s, Corey’s, Arnold’s-these families where puritans who sailed from England and are still very much present generations later in the 5 East End Townships comprising East Hampton, South Hampton, Shelter Island, Southold and Riverhead. The Connecticut Colony which was also called New Haven Colony controlled English Eastern Long Island. The Dutch controlled Western Long Island -Kings and Queens. Nassau was part of Queens until 1890s. When the British Sovereign decided he had enough of the Dutch he offered a solution. Britain will allow the Dutch to pledge their allegiance to the King and keep their businesses, farms and property. They could return home to The Netherlands safely if they wished. They quickly realized if they didn’t agree the British Navy would blow them to bits. New-York was born and Connecticut ceded Long Island and those ‘Hamptons’ to the Kings appointed Governor of New York.

Newport RI is not at all the Hamptons in any way. Separated by more than thirty miles of water, and along entirely different rail lines from NYC the Newport wealthy had little to do with the Hamptons. Only in the last few decades have the Uber Rich built structures attempting to rival the Newport ‘cottages’. And then there is the conflation that the Gold Coast of the north shore of Long Island is somehow the ‘Hamptons’. Each of these areas are unique and deserve their own individual histories told. To say that they are all somehow the Hamptons is a disservice to them.

Those generalities you claim as facts are grossly outdated! The Hamptons has been in year round operations for almost 2 decades. Yes we lose the crowed flux after Labor Day, but it’s far from “ghost town”. It’s a blessing to have a piece of the nonstop bustling Manhattan while having a weekend sanctuary with the cleanest beaches & bays, horse country, farms and nautical life. The restaurants and shops owned by locals and ex-pats from city form a respectful community just as heartfelt and genuine as any small town, but of course with that twist of luxury we Manhattanites work hard for. But one has to be positive and dream bigger to manifest having the best of both city and country beach life year round to know it only “sucks” to those who choose to hate on the place that has in fact been attracting international recognition for over a century…
