    Artiphon Instrument 1 - the most unique MIDI controller ever?
    In this video, I give a quick demo of the Artiphon Instrument 1, one of the most interesting and unique MIDI controllers I have ever owned. Okay, it is by far the most unique (and coolest) controller I've ever even used!
    The Artiphon Instrument 1 was born from a Kickstarter crowd funding drive and is now available to purchase, which is what my pretty awesome wife did for my 40th birthday. Getting it to Australia was a little challenging, and perhaps I'll cover that in a future video?
    Anyway, I hope you enjoy this demo... and of course I have to put it through its paces with GarageBand on my iPad too!

      Yes, I expected to pick it up with my fat fingers and a bunch or random sound would come out, but it is actually really well designed so that it will play when you want it to, but not when you don’t.

    I invented this! :D
    Not joking. I did not patent or design it though, so I don’t have any rights to it or to claim I have any rights to it. But I came up with this exact same thing like a decade ago and put the idea out there hoping someone would run with it. So glad someone did! NOW IF ONLY SOMEONE WOULD RUN WITH MY SMART SEATBELT IDEA SO I CAN BREATHE WHILE DRIVING
    Sidenote
    My version that I’d come up with was actually a little more advanced, so be excited because there are definitely a few things they can and likely will eventually do to make even more magical versions.

    My wife bought this for my birthday in December, but she couldn't wait to give it to me. So, about 5 days ago she couldn't handle withholding it from me for so long! This is beyond the most cool midi controller I have. I have an Akai Max 49 controller which has to be the best there is. I mainly wanted the Artiphone for the violin playing. Now the violin sounds that come with it totally sucks, sam with Garage Band. I use Music Studio that has the BEST violin sounds! I play guitar, drums, organ, and violin. In fact, I play every instrument, I have 120 instruments in my collection. With the Artiphon I can replace all of them. Then when using the Artiphon with the 10+ DAW's that I have, and all the virtual instruments, I am unlimited on sounds, and gosh all the effects that come with each DAW. The Artiphon has to be the most versatile controller ever made! I love the thing! I will use it more for live performances. One thing that bugged me was the usb-b to lightening cable being so short! Thats just plain old stupid to be only 3 foot long. I got on Amazon and ordered extender cables, and now I can be 9 feet away from my iPad! I give the Artiphon a 10 out of 10 rating!

      I would highly recommend having both. I own an Artiphon and an Akai Max 49. I use both of them! The Artiphon does the BEST job for guitar and violin, where the Max is better for drums and keyboard. When doing guitar or violin or cello, you simply hold it like the real instrument so its more natural to play. Then use the gobs of big pads on the Max to do drums, and the keyboard to do organ... My setup is the best of both worlds. But my primary reason for wanting the Artiphon is to use it for live performances, especially violin and cello. I have both instruments, but they just dont sound very good. It takes about a $10,000 violin, viola, or cello to play in an orchestra... With the Artiphon connected to the iPad and using Music Studio it sounds like I am Izak Pearlman playing on a $10 million dollar Stradivari... it is really that great. I love that after I play and hold a note the vibrato kicks in automatically. I've been playing all sorts of classical violin and cello pieces for days now after getting the Artiphon and I am blown away with my sound with it and Music Studio. Now if you think it sounds good off of the Artiphon itself, it kinda does, but when you run it through a pro-audio amplifier or PA thats where you get astounding sounds... Tiny little speakers sound cheesy, nothing beats the sound of a PA costing thousands of dollars. My setup is amazing! Next thing for me to try is run the Artiphon into my Leslie Speaker that I designed and built, it uses a standard guitar jack so I dont have to mod the leslie at all...

    Great video! Thanks for this! Just one question regarding touch response especially when playing drums in Garageband. Does it work well? I would want to play the drums soft when I hit it softer and loud when I play it louder. Yo, Pete... You should have been at my house last night for some jam! Yesterday I went shopping and bought me 2 powered speakers, both use a microSD to put the music on. I loaded an SD card with some Kenny G and Charlotte Church music. One speaker is for the music, the other is for the Artiphon. I also purchased off of Amazon some extender cables. Now my iPad or PC can be 9 feet away and be connected with thin usb and audio cables. I dont have to have my iPad within arms reach now, I can stand up and perform. I cranked up my iPad with Music Studio, selected Solo Violin and I swear I sounded like Izak Perman on his $10 million dollar Stradivari violin. I played for 4 hours non stop, I just couldnt put it down... and you know what I mean on that! This Arti is making me lose ALL interest in my other instruments... 120 of them total. It looks like a music store at my house! I've been so busy with my Arti that I haven't been building my next steel guitar... I like my Arti so much it is interfering with the rest of my life... However, with me being fully retired now, I dont work, I do as I please, and it pleases me to be on my Arti! I also like the idea that I could actually play it in bed and not even wake my wife... Thanks for the info guys. I've since ordered one and returned it for a refund. It's an amazing concept, but it needs improving. Especially at that price. • @PootaurStuff
      @PootaurStuff 4 роки тому

      @@sonicheadfuck Sorry to hear that you sent it back. I think you should have given it more time. Every time I use mine, I am even more amazed what it can do. I am actually now liking the fact that one has to use either an iPad or DAW software. If we only relied on hardware based sounds, like my Yamaha Digital Horn, we would be limited to about 128 instruments, and NO way to do more, nor modify the sound. I have about 10+ DAWS on my PC, and thousands of virtual instruments. Then on the iPad I use Garage Band and Music Studio. Music Studio does the greatest Solo Violin. I think you sent yours back a bit too soon, and didn't give yourself much time. Then on the price, $400 isn't crap to spend on professional audio equipment or instruments, to me its a drop in the bucket. Considering that I have $10,000 in electronic organs and leslie speakers, $400 is chump change... For me, four hundred bucks is 4 sheets of butt-wipe... So I have no problem with the price, I find it dirt cheap. Yesterday I went and bought two powered speakers, both with microSD cards. I use one to play my backtracks, then then the other for the Artiphon. I also bought extender cables for EVERYTHING. Now I can be 9 foot away from the iPad or PC, and stand up to perform with only 2 thin cables for the connection. BTW, I bought the powered speakers for $9 each, they were on sale at a discount store. I am so fricken pleased with my setup! I cant wait to perform Moonlight Sonata and Ave Maria at my sisters Christmas party, all are gonna be blown away. I love this Artiphon more than life itself!!! I wrote to the company and asked them to design and sell an electronic bow for it. Not all of us have a stupid overpriced POS iPhone, nor will I ever get one. I told them if they make it, we will buy it... Price is just not a factor for me at all. Who knows, maybe I should just buy their company?

      @@PootaurStuff £350 for a midi controller is pricey. If you have money to burn then good for you. The point was that I'm left handed and straight out the box the app was broken on day 1 for me. I gave it 2 weeks for them to patch it, then sent it back. It's been patched now so yeah, maybe I should have waited. But the fact that I couldn't even play the thing (because it's right handed) just put me right off instantly. There is no other way to control those settings outside the app is what I'm getting at. Just basic stuff that could have been built in to the instrument itself you know what I mean? No big deal. I'll re visit something like this in another year or so when Artiphon or someone else improves on it. It's the first of it's kind after all.

  • @beav15

    I bought the artiphon but I was very disappointed. It is marketed like a guitar midi device, but it’s awkward design makes guitar sounds seem unnatural compared to a real guitar. I had bought it to emulate slide guitar, but again, it did not sound natural.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 років тому +1

      I think the sound will be as hood as the MIDI instrument you are playing. The built in guitar sound is solid - actually much better than the GarageBand guitar (though this is not saying much).

      Yeah. It’s definitely not for everyone and for doing everything which is why I didn’t want to do a big “everyone must buy one” video. It’s a fun controller that I’m thinking will be very cool for my songwriting workflow.

      Nice one! Good tip. I've never even thought of using a Rock Band controller with an iPhone/iPad!? Cool idea.

      @@PeteJohnsMusic they do a keytar as well they go for about 10.00 quid I have two of them. I stripped the keybed out of one and its now built into a wooden case for my behringer crave. They have full velocity and polyphony. Very cheap midi controller. Check my channel I use the keyboards for volcas and behringers

    Mine worked for 18 months then just stopped. Reached out to the company but got ignored. Sorry but it’s the truth
