Give me chills every time; and the way he can make his guitar weep! Mark wrote this song in response to the Brits involvement in the Falklands War (1982): He actually lost a friend in that conflict, which might explain why he seems so emotional whenever he performs this one during concerts. The song is written from the perspective of a mortally wounded soldier. In 2007, Mark rereleased the track and dedicated the proceeds to those still suffering from the effects of that conflict. The last line of the song is often overlooked, but is perhaps the most important, "we are fools to make war on our brother in arms"; I understand he meant this in the broadest sense, 'brothers' denoting our fellow man. Now that you've heard/seen the official video, you really owe it to yourself to check out a live performance of this song (they are always better live!): The first option -- with the best sound and audio quality -- is their live performance from "ON THE NIGHT"; a second option is their performance at Wembley for Nelson Mandela's birthday (this one is also worth checking out, because Mark's emotion was palpable... he began by dedicating the performance 'to the gentleman in question' and saying 'one humanity, one justice').
Lot of old soldiers and sailors go to their eternal patrol accompanied by this piece of music. Profound, insightful and, as you say, calming. It’s often been said Mark makes his guitar do the singing and he just chips in for the duet. Here he makes it cry and narrates the tears. Timeless classic.
The live version of this song from DIRE STRAITS - Live "On The Night" 1993 is even more impactful with an extended and incredible ending. Also recommend Private Investigations from the same concert. It's absolutely spine chilling. Love your reactions. Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
No weep no feel. This song was both a protest and a celebration of war and fallen comrades. Despite being about the Falklands war, it could be applied to all wars around the world, the stupidity and the devastation it causes, the pain and the unnecessary loss.
This song was written about the Falklands War and the soldier shot is believed to be Lieutenant Lawrence shot by an Argentinian Sniper on mist covered Mt Tumbledown as the Argentinians were retreating to Port Stanley...he was shot in the head and lost a large part of his brain...his fellow soldiers saved his life as he pronounced KIA twice but managed to survive...the Brithers in Arms is not just about your fellow soldiers, its also about the soldiers they were fighting as being Brothers in Arms as the British had a great deal of respect for the opposing forces as a lot of them were conscripts, plus the Argentinian Air Force who were incredibly brave during the conflict, however although the British were out numbered 10 to 1 and the Argentinians embedded in positions , most were conscripts and lacked the training to fight a war against professional soldiers ...
The song both acknowledges the sacrifice of these people but also the fulity and senselessness of war and deaths made in the name of higher powers fighting. Brave men pay the price, and neither side get anything. A beautifully haunting song, that you reviewed very well
There are some live versions which are fantastic like this one: ua-cam.com/video/Z3_HTGdLXL4/v-deo.html ( Mark Knopfler - Brothers In Arms (A Night In London | Official Live Video) ) And this Knopfler song you would thoroughly enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/vyI9flHHT2Q/v-deo.html ( Mark Knopfler - Romeo And Juliet (Real Live Roadrunning | Official Live Video) )
This is sung from the point of view of a dying soldier saying goodbye to his comrades. It’s a brilliant piece of music that has real impact.

They have so many good songs, but to me, this is the one. The video supports the song perfectly. Very moving.

As you say, its a beautiful song and the video is perfection.
Irrespective of technical talent, no-one could make a guitar sing like Knopfler. Fantastic lyrics too.
nah there are a few others that can do that too, gary moore, david gilmour and others.
No weep no feel.

"We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms".
The guys on the other side are also brothers in arms doing their duty for their country.
Loving your Dire Straits journey. Keep em coming.

-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
