Hello John. Thanks always for fun and interesting videos. Thought I might share a quirky item I read today in the publicity pack for the launch of Jaguars in 2000. The XKR has an "improved specification" of an added rear seat cigar lighter! Can you imagine anyone old enough to smoke a cigar being able to fit in the back seat? Gave me a good chuckle this morning. For myself I am the happy owner since last year of a Phoenix Red XKR from 1999 with only one previous owner, garage kept and Jaguar maintained with only 15,000 miles on the clock. Looks and even smells like new. Lucky me. Grrrrrr.
Wow that really is a low mileage car. Love the cigar lighter fact. As you say hilarious that anyone thought it would be useful.
I do love the Phoenix red.
Solid coloured X100's are not common.

I have a ongoing problem with the sat nav. All working as it should but with no voice instructions. I have written to jag world magazine and even they are stumped. The answer will come along one day. John, once I saw the OEM filter, I thought for sure you were going to open it up to see if you could re-fill it with pleated filter material from a rectangular cabin filter. It might be interesting to see if it could be done, and save you 10 or 20. Nice work as always. Stay safe.

@@ToTheGarage Hi John, the passenger seat on my 96 XK8 convertible got stuck at its rear most travel covering the bolts that bolt the frame to the floor. I worked out that he motor had had it, but it took me ages (3 Saturdays!) to work out how to get the seat out to replace. Basically, there are 4 bolts that bolt the frame to the seat and I had to use plumbers pliers to nip off the bolts and then unscrew them by hand, by the way there is little space to do this job and you have to do it upside down! I have a picture of the bolt locations if you would find it useful for your viewers. I have also just replaced the rear sub-woofers as the cones had rotted, I can tell you the manufacturer and model of the replacement speakers and how to wire them, they are dual voice coils so have to be wired in parallel to get somewhere close to the original impedance of 2.7 ohms ish, I have pictures of the originals with dimensions. If not no worries, love the channel and keep up the good work.

If I may add some info to your subscribers/viewers on the issue.
You can check by the Vin number the initial order. It states if it was equipped with a pollen filter.
Alternatively, if you have a full book service, but from the official dealer, the pollen filter replacement is at about 30.000 km , and the part number you'll see on the job/parts list is the MJD6863AA.
Do hope this helps a little bit.

If you bought your cat second hand, you can ask the Jaguar dealer using your vin number.
They can provide the initial order details sheet.

Thank you for all this information. I am working my way through your videos as I have been looking for an XK8 for a couple years. I think I’ve found a nice 2004 and will be making a decision soon. I leaned to 2004-2005 to hopefully have metal timing chain guides and some of the last improvements to the XK8. I wonder about the need for a compression check? The Jag has about 77,000 miles and records seem to show very good maintenance by prior owner who had it for 15 years.
Any thoughts?

That really surprises me that a service item is so awkward to remove. I would have thought JLR would've had their design team sort this out. Should be inside the car.

I think as soon as the car has a second owner, all knowledge of it is lost. Cant see it, probably cant feel its effects, and most garages will obviously pretend they didn't know it was there as its a pain to even check. A secret of the XK8😁
Thanks for yet another excellent video. Questions : Is it possible to know if a car has the pollen filter, without extensive dismantling? Will decoding the VIN tell anything about optional equipment, like this filter etc? I was not aware of all your XK8/XKR ‘secret’ episodes before recently. I started on no 1 and have now come to no 62. All very informative and great fun. I am a subscriber, but have problems signing up as an additional subscriber to the ‘secrets’ separately. Hi. Thanks for watching so many of my videos. (there are 540 of them currently😵💫) The VIN number wont tell you that detail but you can request a spec list from a jaguar dealer, which they can generate from your VIN number. They normally dont charge if you are having some work, or a service/mot done.
If you look for a button called playlists on my channel, One of the playlists is Secrets of the XK8 and they are all grouped there (121) However there are far more jaguar XK8 videos that are not 'Secrets of' ones than are.
@@ToTheGarage - Thank you very much. I am in the process of buying a ‘97 XK8 Coupe for my wife, so I am trying to learn as much as possible. Your videos have been very enlightening, but sometimes also a bit scary, esp due to the extensive use of plastics and other dubious materials on these beauties. I have owned and enjoyed all types of Jaguars since 1982, and presently own three (‘85 XJ-S 3.6 manual TWR, ‘95 X300 Daimler Six and an ‘ 05 S-Type). The XK8 mentioned above will be the fourth in our household. Great fun!

Unless you can spy it with a strong light and a keen eye through the scuttle grills or have documentary evidence that it was fitted, The only way to know is to get the scuttle panel off. (45 minutes minimum if your wipers are not stuck!)
Can't ignore this with my surname. Will be checking thanks John. Nothing noted on the VIN specs (XKR for Japan market). Did they anticipate high pollen rates in Japan I wonder.

I've just used a 6mm Endoscope through the grill in the scuttle to peer at this area. Nope, I don't have a Pollen filter!

Very interesting construction methods. I reckon the new one will block over extended time and reduce the airflow out of the intake. I had an E Class merc that constantly fogged up and the pollen filter in that was a solid black mass when I took it out. The OEM filter looks like it consumed itself with age so it didn’t block. Did you see a difference?
Not really. Im just assuming the air in the cabin is now fresher.😁

Thanks for this John. At around the 6½ minute mark in your tutorial, you make reference to taking care of the black clips that are in the screw holes. I am missing 3 of these and despite a thorough search on the web, can not find anywhere that I could buy replacements. Do you have any suggestions? I’m concerned that without them in place there is a risk of over tightening the screws which would eventually cause the plastic to crack.

My power seat stopped working. I checked the fuse and it was ok. When I put it back it worked once. So every time I want to move the seat I have to remove and reinstall the fuse. Any thoughts?
I get a sort of damp smell from the AC, do you think replacing the pollen filter might help?
It is possible that the pollen filter is heavily contaminated. But more likely the AC plenum needs a clean out as old stagnant condensate can settle there. You can by kits with an aerosol of AC cleaner which you squirt into the plenum via the condensate overflow pipe under the car. Look for where the water drips when you park up on a hot day after driving with the zircon switched on. Above that is the pipe you are looking for

John do you or any of your audience know where I can get a cabin filter housing for an American or left hand drive car? I spent hours online looking of no avail except for a custom-made one in Germany.
Second is the auto fan speed reprogramable? Mine won't go very low in Auto but manually you can turn it down lower. I don't like the noise when it's not really needed.
My 99 XKR does not have a pollen filter at all, I ordered one of these you have in the video and there was no place to put it! Maybe its only for XK8s or cabriolets.
The housing was an option when new and take up was not great. but it can be had on XKR's and Coupes of all years.
Is there a part no. For the black plastic frame? Trying to find it online & so far I’m just getting the filters themselves (which I already have waiting for install). Thanks!

Another reason for removal of the scuttle is if the windscreen needs to be replaced. Mine did after it was split by a huge stone on the Madrid ring road. Although I watched the windscreen fitter installing the new windscreen (like a Mother watching over her precious child!), unfortunately I didn't look to see whether I have a pollen filter. :-(

Is the filter the same for a 2002 xkr RHD, as I keep seeing different shapes available!
Should all be the same as far as Im aware. But do check your car has a cabin filter option before you buy one as its not the commonest of options despite being pretty much satndard these days.

Hi, John, just removed the scuttle panel on my 2003 XK8 & all I found was a rectangular hole (no cover) with a captive nut either side. So I am permanently getting air in from the engine bay. Would turning on the recirculating button help ?
Hi David. Even with no pollen filter housing and no blanking plate, the air intake should still be being drawn down from the scuttle panel and not the engine bay. Do you get an engine bay smell in you interior?

John, I don't know if you can edit your video or not, but I own a North American 2006 Victory Edition, and I am going to assume that since mine does not have a pollen filter, none of them do. If you could let your viewers know that. I took it apart today after watching videos 60 & 61 (thank you very much), and I have a large blanking plate, which I actually could see without removing the panel. It was just a 1/2 hour endeavor. Anybody need a pollen filter?

' Dont go and buy a pollen filter if you dont KNOW that you have a housing fitted. It was an option and although very common in the UK it is Very rare in North America'.

@@ToTheGarage Oh I know John. I figure since it was a special edition XK it would have it. It was cheap enough and I did not realize it was going to come apart so easy, so I did not want to do the work and not have it if it was there. Anyway, now I know and hopefully I have saved other owners the time and effort of finding out for themselves.

What kind of hydrolic fluid go's in the roof.

Early cars may still have a brown fluid that gels up. It should have been changed for a green synthetic fluid (Pentosin CHF11S) but the two dont mix so ensure the old is well purged out if you are swapping one for the other.

In all honesty I don't think the car was designed with it in mind. I think that around this time the rest of the saloon models were having pollen filters as standard, they felt the need to literally shoehorn it into this design.
