I had the exact problem on a customers bug and found that the butterfly spindle bushes were shot as these are plastic and split, so repair kit included bushes made out of brass , this fixed the idling and air leaking plus fuel was leaking . Love the stance of the 64 !!

I use a propane torch to find vacuum leaks. I know it sounds crazy but it's perfectly safe and not as messy as spraying liquids about. Just crack the torch open so there is a little bit of gas flow, do NOT light it, and point the torch at the suspected leak points. The engine will pick up quicker with propane than carb cleaner. Yep, throttle shafts wear out and there are kits to fix it. In the kit you get a new shaft and two bushings. Once you get the old shaft out you will need to drill the shaft holes in the carb body to fit the bushings. The better kits include the drill bit you will need. This should be done in a drill press since the holes should be as straight as possible. Once the holes are drilled, tap the bushings in place, install the new shaft, and you're done. Good luck with it....

Miss Ruby always brings out the lookers. I have come to find out as Miss Daisy will too, more than your shaft wears out with age. I will say, haven't tried a squirt and an O-ring yet, but the brass washer has me scared.
Good-Bye Patina, we saw you watching those Hummingbirds, tasty morsels.

I've done a lot of carb shaft rebushing and repair on tractors bikes and cars I usually replace them with oillite bronze bushings they do wear down after many years use check for wear on the shaft itself also when you do tear it down
