Corvette fall apart?! I mean it does have a 100,000mile warranty.. Chevy isn't gonna sell the car for 100k and have it fall apart!! Interior on the vette is my only complaint! Have fun fixing stuff on the Ferrari and mclaren
A zr1 can provide that as well and still put over 100k miles on the car.. I'd rather have quality and longevity.. The zr1s interior may not be on par with Ferrari but the new c7s sure are and they will have the same warranty as any other chevy... You shouldn't have to be able to choose between longevity and quality and chevy just proved that
I'm a vette guy and will agree that mile for mile the vette will last longer than the Ferrari. But for the last few years ferarri has had a no cost maintenance plan that lasts for 7! Years I believe. That includes engine service which did cost major money. Ferraris are not (at least I don't see them for sale or on the roads) with the amount of miles as corvettes but one car that is related very close to a lambo is audis r8. And that car can easily be a daily driver. I don't think there's even time to say how the mclaren has held up for another few years. Hopefully they will have stellar reliability.
I agree nothing like a 640 hp supercar with a 100k mile warranty that drives smooth as a Cadillac when you want it but is fast as anything when you punch the throttle. No other car can you work on yourself the ZR1 does everything well even cruising on the highway in 6th I get 30 mpg KING OF THE HILL.
If the Corvette "doesn`t belong here" then why does it win the slalom-test? Despite it`s 5% price it still is the fastest car on allmost any track of these three
For anyone who says the Vette doesn't belong in this comparison is INCREDIBLY narrow minded. The Vette may not have the best build quality, but i has the most horsepower, the most torque, the fastest slalom, and the the best numbers on the skidpad at much less than half the cost. All the drawbacks stated below are fixed with the C7. The new Z06 will put the italian supercars to shame.
CarbonFiber458 wait, wait, wait...10 years ago you Euro fanboys were making fun of American cars because they were faster in a straight line than everyone else, now American cars are faster on the track and you Euro fanboys are throwing around 1/4 mile times?? LOL at European hypocrisy. The simple fact is this $100k Corvette and the new Z06 are the fastest cars in their class. Superior handling, superior fuel economy, superior reliability and cost of ownership. Who the hell cares about 0-60 anymore? Camaros beat up 911s and Corvettes are in a league 911 GT3 can barely stay in.
If only GM just said "fuck it, lets build a 1/4 million dollar car to shut the world up". If they can do this with 100 grand, what could be achieved with another 150k?
How come is ok for that crappy ford gt the worst car manufacturer to cost half million dollar but Ferrari is overprice a real race car that dominate formula one for year. A legend beautifully car Explain to me ????? Sent from my iP
Ok, as an owner of a corvette I can tell you that these cars are way more reliable, than ferrari as a friend and myself went cross country from Washington to Arizona, first of all before we even started we went in for an oil change I paid $128 he paid close to $1000 or more. few hundred miles out we stopped he said he was hearing something in the motor, no ferrari dealer anywhere around so he complained the whole time about these little nosies here and there, when we ran down the open road I was in front, from light to light I was in front, I couldnt enjoy my corvette more, not to mention my car had all the bells and whistles of most luxury cars and I must say very relible and just as many looks with the few exterior add ons. long story short when we got home he dropped big money to have that sound investigated, dont know exactly much but more then he cared to share, I drove mine into my garage no problems.
To those wondering why the ZR1 is here, I will say this: Why is the 458 Italia and MP4 here? The ZR1 absolutely mandhandles both of them on any track. Performance-wise, they are absolutely inferior. The ZR1 is the 12th fastest production car on the Nurburgring. The 458 and MP4 are #25 and #26. It's disrespectful to the ZR1 that these ultra expensive and ultra inferior cars were used as comparisons.
Vincent Gambini Corvettes, Ferraris, and McLarens are marketed for different buyers they're only being compared because of their similar performance figures. You seem to be judging cars based on their badges, which is ridiculous. Explain to me how ZR1 is a "hunk of shit" yet it's significantly faster than the 12c and the 458 around tracks like the Nurburgring and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The interior of the C6 ZR1 is a lot worse compared to the 458 and the 12c obviously because it's significantly cheaper. However the C7's interior is in the same class as other European counterparts easily. Also "Fisher Price" build quality is quite a stretch considering most Ferraris spend more time in a garage underneath a tarp than on a road so they don't get ruined. Meanwhile people actually use Vettes as daily drivers. That being said I'd take a 911 GT3 over any of these sublime supercars if money was no object.
Vincent Gambini Why is the ZR1 inferior? Give me one reason besides the interior why it's an inferior car. I never stated that the ZR1 is better than the 458 and 12c. I said it was faster, in the hands of a good driver, which it is. Faster doesn't always equal better. Also why are you complaining about leaf springs when they work? Those leaf springs are far from the "Stone Age" as you put it. Just because it's an old technology that's been re-engineered doesn't mean it's bad. That's like saying most cars are piles of shit because they still use internal combustion engines, because it's an old technology, that's just ridiculous.
Militant Monkey What's wrong with comparing track times? As long as they're unmodified cars, unlike the GTR Nismo or the Dodge Viper ACR-X, I see nothing wrong with it. You can't compare what someone feels when they're driving a Corvette compared to a Ferrari because those are just opinions and there's always going to be biased opinions. Performance figures and track times are some of the only things you can compare about supercars. You're definitely right though in the hands on an un-experienced driver the 458 or 12c will likely be faster than the ZR1. However, that's the reason I like Vettes and Vipers they challenge the driver and make them perform better. There's not many electronics to get in your way it's just the driver, an engine, and a 6 speed. At least in the C6 generation there weren't many electronics to get in your way and you could turn them all off easily anyway. What does picking the GT3 say about me? Am I only supposed to appreciate Ferraris and McLarens or something? lol
Militant Monkey This has nothing to do with pride for America or any of that nonsense. Real car enthusiasts don't care what country a car came from or what badge it has. You've still not given me any reasons why the ZR1 is an inferior car. The ZR1 is marketed for a different buyer than the other two. It's still a supercar like the other two it's not "superior" or "inferior" because those are just subjective terms. Put it this way, I've never really been a fan of Ferrari's I much prefer McLarens and Porsches, but I still respect Ferraris and understand why people like them. What you and Vincent Gambini are doing is blatantly hating on a car because you dislike it.
Vincent Gambini People who buy Corvettes like to have a manual transmission. Just because a dual clutch is faster, which it is unquestionably, doesn't mean it's better. Manuals are considered more fun to drive by many, the only reason Ferrari stopped offering it is because people stopped ordering cars with manual transmissions. I'll just compare the 458 and the ZR1 since the 12c is so similar to the 458. The Brakes are pretty much the same they're both carbon ceramic brakes made by Brembo. Both the 458 and the ZR1 have an aluminum chassis. I couldn't find anything about either of the cars steering and I haven't driven the 458 so I don't have an opinion to offer about its steering. Both the ZR1 and 458 have magnetorheological dampers. Both have Michelin pilot sport cup ZP tires. Both have sophisticated traction control systems. Both have extremely sophisticated engines that are very different from each other. So show me how the 458 is "leagues ahead of the ZR-none." They're all good cars in their own unique ways stop being biased.
It's funny to read all the excuses from the Euro car nut huggers. Just wait until the 2015 Z06 shows up. It's even faster than the ZR1 and will cost less.
Thanks to the taxpayers bailout, gov motors still owes the taxpayer 12 BILLION dollars. All the while paying union thugs exorbitant wages. I for one would rather walk, than put anymore cash into ANYTHING government...Period.
I like how they don't mention the track lap times, which I would be interested to hear. I'm sure the Ferrari is a great car, but I just find it odd how it always wins every comparison, regardless of the performance it puts down...as if Ferrari will only let you test it, if you let them win :p
Corvette ZR 1 is the best American sport car period. You can drive a corvette car everyday European cars are to be driven on weekends when it comes to reliability big question mark. They are more for status symbol that you are wealthy. What's funny is that most people can't afford a mclaren or ferrari but its easier to acquire a vette just because something cost more doesn't mean is better . Example benz s55 cost more than Lexus LS but Lexus is the most reliable car in this class!
J ahhh but the Ford GT is a much much more classic, most special car (other than mcLaren F1 and Enzo the GT is one of the only supercars in the last 20 yrs to go UP in value immediately after production stopped) even if not as "fast" in stock form...modded GTs are running Bonneville over 270mph. "Best" maybe partly objective, but is in the end preference for certain character vs the others.
I hate how people try bash any of these cars. "Oh the ferrari cost 3x more", "the vette has shit build quality" well the vette is cheaper because instead of doubling the price for quality they focus on performance and the ferrari costs double but you get performance and quality. If you really think any of these cars are shit go drive one and see if you can still say that.
Remember fanboys, speed isn't everything. These people compare cars by how good they drive and the Ferrari drives better even though it's the slowest of the bunch. Even tho the zr1 has great value, the dynamics of the 458 make these drivers not care about value because it drives so well. Just hope that more tools on the internet would stop judging cars only on price and speed
Red Winter And then GM will release the new c7 zo6. Have fun crying in a corner when the numbers come out for the slalom and nurburgring times. Making a car feel better about going around a corner, and just making a car go around the fucking corner is the same thing. Ill take the rougher ride, better numbers, and a smaller price tag any day.
Red Winter Flow and Finesse, in my opinion, is for women. To each his own. If my car performs up to par and even with(in some cases better than) the ferrari or mclaren but has a lower sticker price.....It doesn't logically make sense to spend the extra 200 grand. Unless of course materialistic values are the ones you follow. That being said, I like my ride to feel mechanical, be loud, brutal. I want to feel like the work the car is doing is because of driving skill and its high end capabilities to perform however hard I push it. Corvettes have to be pushed to their limits to come close to being even with or better than these other cars. The ferrari and mclaren I can assure you take much less "car driving know how" to perform at that same level.
Red Winter I was going to take you seriously until you called me the dumbest person in the world for "ignoring" the craftsmanship in a ferrari. How materialistic can you be? It must really hurt your ass to know a corvette that cost a 5th of the price of your precious ferrari can perform just as quickly and efficiently(without catching on fire I might add, because you know world class craftsmanship isn't shit without some smoke). And now if we don't like mclarens or ferraris more than we like corvettes then we aren't a "big boy"? The fuck are you even saying? Before you talk about finesse anymore take a look at the new c7 zo6. Which also is a 4th of the price of your beloved ferrari, with tech ferrari doesn't even have. When you equate idiocy with lack of desire to spend more money, you have no idea how greedy and materialistic you sound. pushrod v8's still outperforming the competition and its 2014. Come on man. Its like having a bow and arrow and getting knocked out by a slingshot. Cheaper, quicker, more practical. With such "intellect"(Im going out on a limb here) I would expect you to see practicality. Now before you really get angry and come back with a paragraph explaining how my opinion is stupid and how I'm somehow inferior because I enjoy performance and price over finesse and stupid amounts of money.....I LOVE ferrari's. They have beautiful sounds, and look amazing. But at the same time I LOVE the sound of a 427 smallblock screaming to 7 thousand rpm just as much, and its cheaper. So if I were to be practical, which one would I buy?
Last thought. They didn't really talk/test braking. ZR1 wins! Hands down, ZR1 wins. Why would people that like speed ignore braking? It is very important you know.
from a pedestrian 60-0mph yes, because of its super sticky tires that wear out quickly and are undrivable in the wet. the Corvette has little downforce, so relies purely on the cheapest solution, tires. At racing speeds, 12C has the advantage from its active aero.
Phil Lam Let's not forget the front brakes on the ZR1 are similar to that on the Ferrari FXX only 10mm smaller. And the rears are similar to the Enzo's front rotors. It's not just the tires. The ZR1 has some great brakes. I couldn't just put Sport cup tires on my vette and stop from 60 in less than 100ft.
sniper1334 you can have a million pound pressure clamp on the brakes but you can only stop as fast as the rubber can adhere to the ground. You do that through sticky rubber and downforce pushing the car down. The McLaren has an airbrake to increase the slow down and the downforce upon braking. the corvette has no front wing, no rear wing, no diffusers.
Phil Lam I understand downforce and how it helps with braking. On the opposite end of the spectrum you can put racing slicks on a Volvo V70, but that's not going to make it stop like a ZR1, especially after running laps and it's brakes have faded away to nothing. Yes, ZR1 has very little aero to add downforce, but it DOES have some of the best brakes in the business.
sniper1334 of course, but we're not talking about a Volvo right? if you put racing slicks on a 12C it'll stop much shorter than a ZR1. But, the ZR1 does have good stopping power. McLaren isn't the best either. If I recall, the world record "production" car of 300-0kph is the GT3RS which did it in 6.X seconds. At high speeds, the aero stuff really helps.
I pick the McLaren as my top pick, followed by Ferrari then Corvette. I love the science & engineering behind McLaren's efforts as well as innovation in the 12C. The Ferrari & Corvette are great in their own way, but I just prefer the McLaren
Such an honest review! I've bought Stillen parts for years (for my Mitsu GS-T) and have been extremely pleased with his passion and performance. Thank you, Steve!
i cant decided on which car id rather own.. hahah but when im making 200k in a few or so years, ill most likely have to settle with the ZR1, or better yet, the new Stingray ;)
Zr1 and ford gt. Those are the two icons built by good ole USA. I must say when the c6 zo6 came out in 2006 that car really was a monster compared to its peers. That car isn't that much lower than a zr1 granted the zr1 is faster especially up top. The 458 in this test with a higher trap speed in the 1/4 or the 12c is total bullshit. Those mclarens, like the zr1 have been mid low 10's at over 133 mph. Never saw a 458 come close to that other than in this test.
"He was the GTS champion in 1992 and 94, where his 370z was a common fixture in the winner's circle." Never knew Steve Millen had a time machine. No wonder he won all those races.
people keep ranting about the vettes power terrain reliability being poor, thats so far from the truth/ suspension, brakes, cooling and more parts are made by SOME of the same manufactures used in Ferrari. Engine, transmissions are bullet proof in the zr1. How often do you here of a newer vette let alone a zr1 throw a rod or spin a bearring ? or blow 3rd gear? almost never unless its heavily modded. even then its rare. see what happens when an axel, bushing something minimal break, let alone gearing in a trans or something internal go wrong in a mclearen motor or ferrari motor. its a horrific fix and if its not warranted then god help that person to pay to fix it. I know most people who can buy one of the 2 supers can afford it but i think its ridiculous to spend 15-25+,000 vs a few thousand worst case scenario in the GM
This silver 458 used in this test was a ringer. My local Ferrari said they had it in their service bay and that it and the technician working on it said it was missing components in the rear bumper for weight reduction and was running a hotter cam and setup more like the soon to be released Speciale. I’m just repeating what I was told by them
Do not forget General Motors license's its MRC Suspension to Ferrari - that's right Ferrari uses a Cadillacs traction and suspension system- lol.. Always did think Ferraris were over priced Guiney Garbage :)
Phil Lam The 458 does too. Yet it's over 8 seconds slower than the ZR1 on the Ring. Ferrari helped GM with brakes, and GM helped Ferrari with suspension.
makes sense for gm to make extra money for them to use the design. i would be mad if they did it with ford lol which i know they wouldnt lol i would be so pissed if it came on the gt500 or gt trak pak for that matter i would loooooose my mind
Ferrari is still playing catch-up, when it comes to track performance of the GM cars. The new (670hp) 488 GTB is still SLOWER than the OLD (505 hp) C6 Z06's time at the nurburgring. The new (and still heavy 650hp/3,926lbs) Zl-1, Easily beat the (570hp/3,300lbs) 458 Italia and (740hp/4,000lb) F12's time around the ring.
They interior and sound is what gave the 458 the win...not it's perfromance. Sure the 458 is faster in a straight-line but the Zr-1 eats it alive on a track..in the twisties or on the "bang for the buck" aspect.
In ten years lets see what your ZR1 is worth and how many people would even want it. The McLaren and the Ferrari will still be cool and very desirable and valuable because they are amazingly cool.
yes, zr1 doesn t loose its price, still is more than 75% of the new car, the same as ferrari (!)... that means people know the value of zr1 pretty well
85% of all Corvettes built since 1953 are still in service. The one nice thing about Corvette compared to the other two cars is that you don't need to hire your own mechanic to keep it running. In the Corvette, you can go 50,000 miles or more without any visits to the mechanic at all. Well worth the price.
THERE'S NO WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the American Muscles has been, are and will be ALWAYS BETTER than the european 4 crappy expensive wheels, and even the few times when the crappy could seems better, in a 'Vette or a Viper, you can tune the rigidity of the chassis, the power of the engine, the brakes, ALL, to have EXTREMELY HIGHER performance compared to the european junks, like "ferracci", with only a fraction of their cost !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! USA ALWAYS WON, WIN, AND WILL WIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (The european hypertech craps are already exasperated ; can be tune very little)
Vincent Gambini Deluded drugged, YOU are the one that believe in ghosts !!!!!!!!!!!! The fastes and coolest cars in the streets are American tuned muscle, Vettes, Vipers, Ford GT, Saleen, SCC, etc. ................ Your europeans are only SHIT in comparison !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vincent Gambini junior YOUR ASS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a 1100 BHP Viper Venom : THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A race in USA .......... and so ??????? No American would go in the shitty F1 !!!!!!
I'd have to put the ZR1 in last place. Do to the lousy build quality. Sure, it's fast as stink and priced modestly. (Which in my opinion a 6 digit price is not all that "modest" in my book.) but it's piss poor when it comes to over all quality. The seats are terrible, when you try to close the trunk or any of the doors they won't close properly (Once again do to lousy build quality.) My grand dad owns a 09' ZR1, and nobs and pieces started breaking and falling apart on the interior. He had to get the driver side window replaced because it stopped working. (MULTIPLE times) And has the technology that will only impress Fred Flinstone. The MP4-12C and 458 Italia have NONE of these draw backs. Sure they're more expensive. But they're better built, and more reliable in the long run. I'd have to put obviously the Ferrari in 1st, Mclaren 2nd and Corvette 3rd. And before you Corvette fanboys start getting pissed off, and start calling me "Euro trash". Let me let you guys know that I AM a 6 year owner of a 1997 C5. So I KNOW what I am talking about! Corvette owners ACTUALLY knows how to critique the cars that they love. Fanboys just ignore all of the problems, and act like it's the say all be all car of the universe. What I'm trying to say is. The ZR1 is a one trick pony. It can go really fast, but that's pretty much it. Don't believe me? Just ask any ACTUAL Corvette owner, and they'll tell you the cold hard TRUTH. Now allow that food for thought to digest a little ZR1 fanboys.
The doors and trunk close perfectly and as soon as it has traction will leave both cars behind .It costs a hundred thousand less.Zr1 for the win.Just sold my z06 and bought a zr1 and its a great car.
***** That is an ignorant question. They sold plenty considering the car was over 110K. Also once the Z06 came out with the Carbon edition/Z07 package and all of the brakes & suspension upgrades that could be found on the ZR1, it didn't make since to spend the extra money for a street car. I guess when you can't win the performance argument, the subjective argument begins. There are more deposits on C7 ZO6s than there will be Porsche 911 GT3s sold this year so we will see how much crying comes in 2015. You are running out of excuses.
***** Please stop telling the lie that Porsche outsells Corvettes 3:1 because it looks almost as stupid as you are. You are attempting to illustrate that Porsche only sells performance cars and comparing that number to Corvettes which is one product line from Chevrolet. You are a child obviously not getting enough attention at home so you seek it here. You constantly compare Porsche to 1 car from Chevrolet. What are they teaching you guys in school over there? Porsche sold alot of 911s, which has about 11+ variants of it excluding convertibles. There was only one version of the C7 and it still outsold the 911s by 3:1. If there were 10 versions of the Corvette, it would be significantly worse. The C7 Z06 is going to beat every Porsche south of the 918 on any road course without any problems.
You can spend more on optional carbon fiber, seats, paint, wheels and tires on a 458 than a ZR1 costs with every option. Yet the ZR1 is faster on a road course. Seems logical, doesn't it?
What the heck is a Corvette doing here? It does not belong with the other two cars at all!!!!!! It is like putting a Chevy Cruze with a BMW Z4 and an Audi R8. There is just no comparison. Don't get me wrong, I love the Corvette. But it cannot even begin to compare with the Ferrari and the McLaren... OUTRAGED!!!!!!!
True Matthew, I am disappointed in how the Ferraris don't keep up with cars like the corvette and GTR, but I would still buy a Ferrari over them just because it is a Ferrari lol. ESP the Italia 458...I just love that car. That and the Ferrari Testarossa
You are a materialistic douche if you buy a car for the brand or badge. And you compared a chevy cruz to an r8? You realize the BASE MODEL c7 is comparable to an r8....You have horrid comparisons.
I just bought the ZR1 in this video. The car now has a built 416 shortblock, ported blower, cam, etc. making 850whp. I did notice that the carbon ceramic rotors are pretty pitted and a little warped. After watching this video, I'm starting to understand why. Other than that, the car drives like it's brand new.
ZR1 would have my vote. It has better times then shown on here and pulls more G's then that on a skid pad. And all the bickering on the dyno between McLaren and Ferrari and they still couldn't touch the power of the ZR1
THANK YOU, I hate it when people say the ZR1 is better, but they dont pay attention to the fact that it has a bigger engine with more Hp, and even without that it still isnt better
The f12 is amazing and sounds unbelievable! thats why i thought it was funny how there were actually people in the comment section saying "I would take the stingray over the f12" and thinking the stingray is comparable to it lol.
so they end the article with shots of 458 driving away through the slalom saying it's a level above, while the Vette fully trounced it in the slalom, speed, G load and pricing... LOL
For people who like to take out Nurburgring lap time, keep in mind that Corvette's lap time in Nurburgring was conducted by factory sponsored, with racing driver, special setting and equipments (slick competition tires). When Ferrari conducted a test in Nurburgring and set up a car special for that track using non road legal equipments, the 599XX lap it under 7 minutes, about 22 seconds faster than Corvette. In Ferrari's world, mili seconds do count. 22 seconds is just a humiliation.
Could you imagine if you owned an automotive tech. company and Ferrari comes knocking at your door to purchase your product (just think about it for a minute)? Truth is, you probably be in awe and disbelief and then once you came out of the ether, you wouldn't compromise yourself by making the premier marque in the entire automobile industry have to beg. It is always a win-win for everyone.
Let's be honest here, the Corvette looks like a real piece of junk next to both the other cars. It's got fantastic performance but it's missing all the other things that make a supercar a supercar. You can put wheels and a giant engine in a cardboard box but that doesn't make it the same as a Ferrari.
***** Why are you talking like you drive one of these cars? You don't even own a Corvette so what's all this "hearing me go by staring at my tail lights" nonsense.
love the enthusiasm by all the Americans believing there plastic cheaply made car is as good as these two masterpieces of engineering because a massively biast review tell them it's as as fast when every other video shows different.
The car has carbon fiber parts on the fenders, roof, hood, and front chin spoiler. Other parts are made of magnesium and the frame is made of aluminum. The engine is hand built, just like a Ferrari or Lamborghini, and the builders name is stamped on the the engine. The rear bumper panel is made of plastic, GM engineers said they made this plastic because carbon fiber was to light and they are engineers so who knows why. Also find me one video where this car is slower. This car in 2012 set the production car lap record at Leguna Seca. It beat all the foreign cars, every single one of them. This ZR1 performance wise, is better than any car in 2012. Sure the interior isn't the greatest, but you get better performance a mean nasty sounding exhaust all for several hundred thousand dollars less. You obviously haven't done jack shit as far as research on this car because not one other car has beaten it, in 2012. since then a few cars have finally beaten it, which cost almost a million dollars. so what I am trying to say is, fuck off.
+Eric Patterson lol a zr1 in 2012 was £130,000 the same as a turbo s American cars are only cheap in America and why would small European sports car companys test in America especially at the level chevy test at.every spec that chevy have said is a lie show me one video were a zr1 comes close to a 12c stock.if thay lie about that what else do thay lie about.
+Eric Patterson wow come on dude if it was that easy everyone would do it.you have to buy the car pay 10% US tax of what the cars worth shipping cost 20% vat and then a registration tax.or you could just buy a better built car for less money what's made for our roads and pay no tax.
There's a 2013 zr1 a few miles away from me and it's 66,000 and I still can't afford that. Never in my lifetime could I afford anything European. I wouldn't buy a supercar based on build quality. We all know they are not pieces of crap
However, this does not mean they couldn't build a car that could not out perform the F12. All they would have to do is what they have always done to make cars fast: a more powerful engine with even stickier semi-slick tires and some light-weight parts. It's always been cost effective, if not crude, but, as the ZR1 shows, it's very pragmatic and gets the job done.
If you read article online, 12c was heat soak mode. Track time was the slowest. Forced induction vehicles have issues in hot Cali summers. I suspect the 650S will do then same. DI is very much needed to keep this from happening.
A friend of mine has a 2012 Italia with custom exhaust system. This car is truly amazing. I'm saving for the 2008-2010 Corvette ZO6 Carbon Edition. The 458 is a fantastic piece of art, but ZO6 fits my character and driving style better. If I could afford a car this expensive, I would go for my personal favorite - Murcielago. Some day...some day.
The $175K premium is not just about performance. Those who argue from a bang-for-the-buck position clearly miss one of the major reasons for owning a Ferrari. It has to do with performance, quality, craftsmanship, the latest and greatest technological developments and, above all, extreme exclusivity.
Here is a minor correction to your "fun facts:" the magnetic dampers, which were originally co-developed by GM and Delphi Automotive in the early 2000s, and have been produced by Beijing West Industries since Nov. 2009, are but one part of an overall suspension system that is designed and built by Ferrari. Also, different versions of the dampers appear only in the 458 and F12. So your claim that "Ferrari uses MagnaRide suspension" is not entirely correct.
As a matter of fact, I used to know several people who have owned Ferraris. One of whom lived near Beaver Dam Road in Trenton, New Jersey. He had a few Ferraris and he told me all about them. It has always been well known in the automobile circles though that the ultra expensive European "super cars" need to be cared for in a constant manner. Corvette does not. It is a true 100,000 mile trouble free car.
The base price of the 458 Italia is $236,725.00 and the as tested price of this particular 458 is $333,600.00.Ferrari have always been expensive cars in part to maintain their exclusivity.Even if you had the money,it is no guarantee that they will even sell you a brand new one.A colleauge wanted to buy new two years ago at Ferrari of Ontario. He had to buy used since he was not an established Ferrari client of which at least one used purchase is required to get in the door.
And yes, drivability is nothing to scoff at. It's what companies like Ferrari and Porsche spend a lot of time perfecting to the finest detail imaginable. For them, super cars are not just about making a road-burner at whatever cost, but also making a car that drives and functions to perfection. I'm not hating but supreme drivability and functionality are things foreign to anything Corvette.
The 'Ring times are invalid in terms of establishing performance comparisons as each car's time you are referring to were set on different days and under un-equal conditions. Also, the ZR1 "lap records" (READ: "lap records") were set in a track ready car with a full race crew and equippment - something you don't get when you buy the car off the floor. Read the Dec. 2012 issue of R&T. There, the 458, under equal conditions, outperformed the ZR1 0-60, 1/4 mile and lap time.
I own a '13 ZR1, I don't get to drive it as much as I'd like to. But in 4yrs and 15k miles, it has never needed one repair, not one. It's only been to the dealer for 4 oil changes in 4yrs. It's on it's 3rd set of tires and 2nd air filter. I also have a '15 Z06/Z07, it has not needed one repair either. But I won't sell the ZR1, it's dear to my heart.
It absolutely baffles me that people scratch thier heads when they realize that the McLaren and the 458 Italia are the price of two ZR1s.Were you people hoping to get a high performance super car with world class performance (ZR1),exceptional craftmanship (ZR1 not),supreme engineereing (ZR1 not),exceptional quality (ZR1 not), and exclusivity (ZR1 not) for a bargain price? Those of you who argue the bang-for-the buck factor in building the Corvette to the heavens miss the point completely.
The professionals take the cars, drive them, assess the performance and make judgements about which car is the best. Ferraris almost always win these comparisons. There is a reason for that.
Most people wouldn't think the track plays a role in vehicle performance, but it can. You need only refer to F1 racing from a decade ago for the proof.
Then there are the optional high-tech valve caps: "To offer clients even greater scope for personalisation, Ferrari Genuine has created a specific set of valve caps bearing the Prancing Horse motif. These valve caps are made from anodised aluminium to reduce the weight of the wheel without affecting balance." source: Ferrari website
ZR1 has my vote. Looks better, sounds better, more power.
It’s the only car here you can get in a manual too…
8 years later, the first comment lol
Me to bro... ☺️my dream car🥰
C6 ZR1 with C8 gearbox could beat anything, I'd buy it manual
Ik hope my dad gives me his
zr1 sound better ? are u crazy ?????? Americans people are so dumb . . . .oh my god . . .
458 sound like Formula 1 ,
You can thank General Motors for those shocks that Ferrari has licensed from GM for use on their cars.
GM builds lots of parts for other car companies, particularly drivetrain parts. BMW has long sourced transmissions from GM, for example.
This slice of paradise This sacred throne of Kings Of course they do, but GM builds the fastest monitorizing magnetic suspension in the world.
@This slice of paradise This sacred throne of Kings your an idiot. get a hold of yourself. Cadillac was the first to use mag ride tech.
Ferrari was the first to license to GM..for different things
If American cars are so good how come they don’t have car in the formula one???????????
Corvette fall apart?! I mean it does have a 100,000mile warranty.. Chevy isn't gonna sell the car for 100k and have it fall apart!! Interior on the vette is my only complaint! Have fun fixing stuff on the Ferrari and mclaren
im sure if you have a ferrari or mclaren you will have enough money to fix it
im not talkin bout money to fix it.. im talkin to the people that say the vette will fall apart..
+wiigamer136 exactly man!! 100% agree!!
On a freeway roll ZR1 cant be beat. Proud owner!
JerseyMikeP where did you get this info from? I'd like to see that
@@JerseyMikeP false man. I've raced both cars against my 2010 Zr1. Left em
Hey question Zr1 owners, what are common mods?
@@jcgamingMedii no c7 zr1 wouldn’t even be able to leave an mp4 from a roll. Either you’re capping or you’re not stock
The new Z06 will put the italian supercars to shame.
thank you. Bamf.
C7 was a step backwards. C6 ZR1 all day 😎
I agree but the C7 didn’t put the Italians to shame lol…everyone levelled up
Then the C8 became what it defeats.
A vette at its absolute best is front engine
never underestimate a modern Vette =)
Now in 2023 , we say “never underestimate an old man with a corvette”
Funny all the corvettes stats are better, what makes the Ferrari better? Maybe it's easier to drive? I still say corvette is king of streets.
Did you see the quarter mile times they recorded?
Yes your right, but my point is that there's only 1 or 2 flaws of the corvette I don't understand why they think those super cars are better
454BBC Chevrolet meh, journalists. They can't drive, so they like the car that drives easiest. ZR1 is the undisputed king of this test.
Vette made more power on the dyno than both exotics, but trap less in the quarter,hmm...
If only GM just said "fuck it, lets build a 1/4 million dollar car to shut the world up". If they can do this with 100 grand, what could be achieved with another 150k?
maurizio dileo Yet people lined up in droves and begged all over social media to buy a half million dollar Ford......
and u believe that????wath kinda idiot will spend half million dollar on ford ?????
maurizio dileo Anyone that bought the new Ford GT?
How come is ok for that crappy ford gt the worst car manufacturer to cost half million dollar but Ferrari is overprice a real race car that dominate formula one for year. A legend beautifully car Explain to me ?????
Sent from my iP
maurizio dileo I don't know, you'd have to ask Ford.
To those wondering why the ZR1 is here, I will say this:
Why is the 458 Italia and MP4 here?
So show me how the 458 is "leagues ahead of the ZR-none."
They're all good cars in their own unique ways stop being biased.
Il take the zr1 over the Ferrari
I'll take the Ferrari and sell it and get 2 zr1s lol
Lol good thinking

maurizio dileo u have no room to talk lol

joe guirey And you're just a silly brainwashed tool. Having your period? Who the hell cares:)
Nope.. Ford gt is the best and it was famous for raping the Ferrari back in 67.. the corvette can't compete with the gt
VETTE is KING 🔥🔥🔥
“Never underestimate an old man with a CORVETTE”
Paddle shift is for your old lady.
Narrator mentions the old styling of the Corvette....They just basically wanted to pick the car they thought looked best.
I hope the C8 corvette stingray will be like the 2009 stingray concept.
Phil Lam
Let's not forget the front brakes on the ZR1 are similar to that on the Ferrari FXX only 10mm smaller.
Phil Lam
I understand downforce and how it helps with braking.
Would take the Zr1 over all these cars 🤷♂️

Contrary to popular belief the ZR1 handles really well
458 isn't called the best mid engine car ever for no reason!
wow, that is just one hard fact all the way
458 claim over 30 international award in its career
the corvette is also more reliable and it gets better gas mileadge
people keep ranting about the vettes power terrain reliability being poor, thats so far from the truth/ suspension, brakes, cooling and more parts are made by SOME of the same manufactures used in Ferrari.
ZR1
1:34 LOL, Jay Leno used to make fun of how Italians always gesticulate when communicating. It's the Latin passion LOL!
This silver 458 used in this test was a ringer. My local Ferrari said they had it in their service bay and that it and the technician working on it said it was missing components in the rear bumper for weight reduction and was running a hotter cam and setup more like the soon to be released Speciale. I’m just repeating what I was told by them
ferrari with silver color its a disrespect againt ferrari. criminals.... USA
Lol the vette is half the cost !!!!!
Do not forget General Motors license's its MRC Suspension to Ferrari - that's right Ferrari uses a Cadillacs traction and suspension system- lol.. Always did think Ferraris were over priced Guiney Garbage :)
The mid-engine supercars don't use the MRC system. Only the big GT cars like the California, F12, FF...
Phil Lam The 458 does too. Yet it's over 8 seconds slower than the ZR1 on the Ring. Ferrari helped GM with brakes, and GM helped Ferrari with suspension.
im suprised i didnt know that.. they must keep that hidden for obvious reasons
makes sense for gm to make extra money for them to use the design. i would be mad if they did it with ford lol which i know they wouldnt lol i would be so pissed if it came on the gt500 or gt trak pak for that matter i would loooooose my mind
Red Winter Who cares about sales? Idiot.
The very fact that a CHEVROLET us in the same conversation as FERRARI and MCLAREN should shut most people up...
Should.
The vette should've won instead of the Ferrari
belive me road track they know what they do
They interior and sound is what gave the 458 the win...not it's perfromance.
Sure the 458 is faster in a straight-line but the Zr-1 eats it alive on a track..in the twisties or on the "bang for the buck" aspect.
I agree...
the 2015 zo6 corvette could beat all of them it has 625 hp brembo brakes better handling and it is only $80,000 and it is also lighter than the zr1
rockyyy01 yeah I know
its actually 650 horsepower.
It's actually the heaviest Corvette ever, but 3500 pounds isn't that much for modern sports car.
I got torque and hp mixed up it has 625ftlbs of torque but its still a monster
devon royer no it actually has 650 ft lbs of torque
In ten years lets see what your ZR1 is worth and how many people would even want it. The McLaren and the Ferrari will still be cool and very desirable and valuable because they are amazingly cool.
C Brooks Maybe lots of money for a cashier at Taco Bell.
just another jealous Euro tool
yes, zr1 doesn t loose its price, still is more than 75% of the new car, the same as ferrari (!)... that means people know the value of zr1 pretty well
the 7 liter (427 ci) V8 is the ls7 crate engine...

Now allow that food for thought to digest a little ZR1 fanboys.
the Ferrari and McLaren breakdown more often though engine and transmission wise
The doors and trunk close perfectly and as soon as it has traction will leave both cars behind .It costs a hundred thousand less.Zr1 for the win.Just sold my z06 and bought a zr1 and its a great car.
*****
That is an ignorant question.
*****
Please stop telling the lie that Porsche outsells Corvettes 3:1 because it looks almost as stupid as you are.
I can't wait for the Stingray ZR1 !
You just wish you had a corvette!!!
Nah I don't...its just a car Jerome. And I am not willing to spend that much money on something which is going to fall apart sooner or later
just wait until the c6 2015 supercharged monster destroy its competitors .... goodluck ferarri , mcleran ...
If you use the track focused Corvette, why use the base 458 instead of Speciale, the track focused 458
A note to the guys in post production: maybe lower the music a bit while Rod Millen is speaking so we can more clearly hear what he’s saying.
Post vids....
💪🏻
fact that corvette is being compared to such rarer and more expensive cars says a lot about how human it is
THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY good.
Ferrari says thanks GM for the new shocks lol got to love American cars
its a honor that they invited the zr1 to a playing field of supercars and thank brembo for the use of there brakes german transmisson and the ecu's
The f12 is amazing and sounds unbelievable! thats why i thought it was funny how there were actually people in the comment section saying "I would take the stingray over the f12" and thinking the stingray is comparable to it lol.
no no no no, keep the zr1's look, i love that car!
I went to your channel and noticed you haven't posted a video of your 458 spider. Why don't you a video of your car?
It's an honor that the Corvette even gets mentioned with the likes of Ferrari and McLaren.
so they end the article with shots of 458 driving away through the slalom saying it's a level above, while the Vette fully trounced it in the slalom, speed, G load and pricing... LOL
Lap times please?
ZR1 spanks them
Lap times? Any1
For people who like to take out Nurburgring lap time, keep in mind that Corvette's lap time in Nurburgring was conducted by factory sponsored, with racing driver, special setting and equipments (slick competition tires). When Ferrari conducted a test in Nurburgring and set up a car special for that track using non road legal equipments, the 599XX lap it under 7 minutes, about 22 seconds faster than Corvette. In Ferrari's world, mili seconds do count. 22 seconds is just a humiliation.
Vette and 12C please!
By the damn car on ebay than have it shipped over. I dont what else to tell you.
Ok nice its always great to have knowledgeable people to talk with.
That's a bad time for the ZR1. That car runs deep 10s at high 132 mph
If you read article online, 12c was heat soak mode. Track time was the slowest. Forced induction vehicles have issues in hot Cali summers. I suspect the 650S will do then same. DI is very much needed to keep this from happening.
What were the road course times?
A friend of mine has a 2012 Italia with custom exhaust system. This car is truly amazing. I'm saving for the 2008-2010 Corvette ZO6 Carbon Edition. The 458 is a fantastic piece of art, but ZO6 fits my character and driving style better. If I could afford a car this expensive, I would go for my personal favorite - Murcielago. Some day...some day.
The raging bellow from the Corvette never gets old to me.
The $175K premium is not just about performance. Those who argue from a bang-for-the-buck position clearly miss one of the major reasons for owning a Ferrari. It has to do with performance, quality, craftsmanship, the latest and greatest technological developments and, above all, extreme exclusivity.
great video and awesome cars
Why didn't they post lap times? Would have liked to see how they compare!
Explain the HUGE difference in the stopping distance before and after the Vettes tire change.
Which car does this magazine you're referring to use a timing belt?
excellent observation!
Then there are the optional high-tech valve caps:
"To offer clients even greater scope for personalisation, Ferrari Genuine has created a specific set of valve caps bearing the Prancing Horse motif. These valve caps are made from anodised aluminium to reduce the weight of the wheel without affecting balance."
