i've moved out on my own 3 months ago. never did learn to cook. and now i miss home meals like this. i come come on your channel often to learn how to cook lao food. Thanks, you're a life saver.
I love your channel and I made the thum mak thang just like you and it came out bomb this was my first time makeing it with the cucumber I usually make it with the papaya or the noodle thank you for shareing how to make it
I'm Laotian and I make papaya salad often. I've made it for my non Asian friends and what I notice often is that they don't like the taste of shrimp paste. To throw in crab and tamarind paste on top of padaek would turn them off. Of course you never know until you try it but my instincts said they won't but I would :)
@@HouseofXTia Most people wouldn't try Asian dishes if they knew what went into a lot of them. I tend to just leave out the questionable ingredients when I tell them what's in it so they'll continue to enjoy it lol I mean, how do you explain to someone how badaek is perfectly ok to eat given how it's made and stored lol Once you start getting into the country side of Lao, Thai, or Viet cooking, the ingredients get even more questionable for some of the dishes, no way you'll get someone to try it if they knew what was in it lol.
I was thinking the same thing about the cheese grater! No way am I using a knife like that either. But I just decided on getting the shredder tool instead, yesterday. I was kind of irritated though. It was 5 for 3. I didn't want to spend that much... But w.ever. I got a tool I can use for several yrs to come. And if it breaks? I got 2 more.
@@ahhwe-any7434 You don't need to hold it in your hand if you don't feel comfortable using a knife like that. When I was a small kid and I helped my mom make this with papaya, I would just set the papaya on the counter, cutting board, or those large plastic mixing bowls and wack away at it. It's not nearly as skillful as it may seem at first so you'd be surprised at how easy it is to do. As I got older and was able to hold the papaya steadily in one hand, I was already comfortable enough with a knife to do it the way she does it.
Thank you for showing how to shred old school way w knife, I'm showing the white bf this so he knows how to ch ch chop it long way so I can make it for him lol

Can you use tamarind soup base instead of paste? 🤔
yes, just use less if its in liquid form 😊
Do you put garlic in tum mak taeng?
No. I don’t like the taste of raw garlic but please add it if you like it!

hahaha sometimes you just gotta make it, let them try it and then tell them what's in it!

Do spicy long bean salad!
it's pretty much the same sauce for papaya and cucumber :)
I'm actually not a fan of this because of the slightly bitter after taste but still yummy over all.
I lost my shredder/peeler and I was too scared to cut my cucumber with a knife so I used a cheese grater which worked really well. Lol.
bahahaha gotta do what you gotta do

Nope. I don’t like the taste of raw garlic but feel free to add it!
What is padaek?
fermented fish sauce :)
@@HouseofXTia Is this the same/similar to the Filipino bagoong?
@@Critique808 From what I can see from google, it looks to be the same thing.

your welcome! takes patience and practice but tastes so much better done this way!
Instead of padak pieces I like the crab, i like the sweetness vs fishyness
i love crab as well! now i/m craving!!
That's a big ass mortar you got there. You could probably make enough to feed the whole village with that.
haha village size!
Not really kid
