Nice to see Hayling in the background. During his years at North Shore Yachts, my father single-handedly built one of the first Southerly 28', with a coffee & cream colour scheme and a plan to sail the world. Unfortunately, an unmissable opportunity arose and it meant selling the yacht to raise funds. Alas he never got to sail past the Isle of White after that, life got in the way.
Beautiful boat. Cant wait for more videos.
Welcome back. I am really happy to see you two back on UA-cam.
Great to see Southerly having a positive future.
Yes Jamie we were very happy to see Southerly yachts would be built again!
What a beautiful Boat!
I look forward to your new videos on your new yacht. I really enjoy your videos.. Love the way you can raise the keel for shallow waters and set it right on the beach.
Great and exciting news for sure. Cheers from PEI, Bryan.
Great post...happy for ya. I'm taking my 2nd and 3rd look at Discovery, look forward to more of your posts.
Cool boat! I love that you're key in new design features! Amazing! Nice video!
Beautiful boat that.
What a great new video style - love it 😍
Glad you liked it :-)
Very nice !
Lovely boat 😍
Look forward to see more from you two and the new "Girl" 👍
We got to design our boat and it's pretty cool to do that. Enjoy ur new home
You Both Are Great and You Have Fans In Victoria BC
Dream boat. 💚
I look forward to hearing what you like better in the 480 compared to the 49. Thanks for sharing.
Very exciting news indeed! I'd LOVE to see more interior shots if you get another chance to test sail one similar to your new design!
Hey Kelly! We'll be putting up more interior info over the next few days as we are planning out our "Sail Away Weeks" for the new boat :-) So people can see what their cabin will look like!
Well this video definitely answers the questions I had on the previous video. There are a lot of bad comments online about rudeness of the Southerly sales force, Step 1 fire them. Also, Southerly has been bankrupt and defaulted on some of it's suppliers in the past so those relationships are stressed. I wouldn't have commissioned a Southerly mainly because you couldn't be sure you would get your boat. It also makes sense, the Discovery layout is so similar to the Southerly. Great move by both companies. The time proven retractable keel is a huge selling point for Caribbean cruising.
Yes it was a shame what happened and gave people a bad impression. I had noticed years ago at Southampton boat show that only Discovery had the similar raised saloon I love!
They say being envious is one of the seven deadly sins; sadly I have to admit I feel envious. That said I am equally happy on your behalves so I might not be too bad a person after all.
I have followed your fantastic sailing show from the very beginning and had the pleasure to meet you during the 2012 ARC. The name of my boat is Amelie d’Oslo, A Bavaria 50, you might recall we had rudder problems and we meet under my boat on the marina concrete.
Wish you lots and lots of happy sailing and looking forward to continue follow you in the year to come.
Congratulation

Thanks for making such a great video series. My family and I have watched many episodes over dinner together. It's pretty hilarious hearing our teenage sons sing the theme song too. :)
We are now the proud owners of a Catalina 30- our first boat, partially inspired by you two. Best wishes on the new boat and hope to meet you in person some day in the Caribbean. :)
Thanks Peter and also to your family. Sorry about the long theme song :-) we cut it shorter ... And thanks for telling us about your new Catalina 30. Fair winds and I hope we meet up in an anchorage somewhere... Paul & Sheryl
Whenever I go to buy a sailboat, I’m getting a Southerly, they seem so well made
neighbor of mine at the marina bought a southerly last month. first one I've seen here in texas. really nice looking boats in person.
Robert Miller what Marina in Texas? I would love to see it.
Thank you for this video, so useful to see the boat moving. Looked like a comfortable ride as well as fast. Comfort is important for the safety and stamina of the crew (especially the Mrs).
Don't worry about showing belowdecks, we can see that in a brochure.
I am glad that you are not on a catamaran. Cats are great for Fairweather, but I have been on a large cat in a Gale and steep seas twice - the only times I ever feared that the boat would capsize. I have never felt afraid of capsize in my mono.
Plus I got tired of the "bombs" on the bridge deck :-).
Congratulations. I'm hoping to buy a Southerly when I retire...in 25 years! ;) glad they're back in play, too great a design to not be on the water.
That's planning ahead George! Yes they're great boats and we're happy they will continue.
I have no idea why I find this exciting - I just do. So pleased for you, Southerly, Discovery and all the viewers who love Distant Shores II; Will this one be Distant Shores III?
Things I am happy about:
1. Southerly Sailboats are still around
2. You two did not go the catamaran path
If I hit the lottery, we will buy one too. :-)
LOL yes we're still monohullers
Yes, it's nice to see they stuck with a sailboat over a catamaran.
What do you think about Solaris 50. Crosing atlantic one time a year, caribians, itali, croatia, grece. Me solo. It is fast, just like swan but lower price. 600 000$.
I do recall Solaris at Dusseldorf boat show when I was there in 2016 with the deep keel buried in cracked blue glass!! Very exciting boat show display. The boats look quite fast!
You have so much experience with sailing. And have cast your lot with a monohull. Can you give specifics? Or is it strictly preference? The one thing that I see, is that you could not have done the rivers through Europe with a cat. That was a very special trip that I would. It have wanted to miss.
yeaaa a new southerly
do they need investors
Thank you very interesting video,
smooth sailing
Really nice boat. Wouldn't trade my catamaran for it but very impressive!
Have I misremembered something, were you originally wanting straight spreaders to minimize downwind chafing of the main?
Congratulations! Great news such a fantastic range of boats will develop and continue. Will you be using the yard at Itchenor, Chichester Harbour? I have a boat in the area, so maybe I'll see you on the water sometime.
Discovery have their own yard in Marchwood near Southampton where they will build the boats. Sadly its not on the water like Itchenor. I understand the Northshore yard in Itchenor will continue to run a service operation and of course they know a lot about the boats so many people will be bringing their boats back there for work.
I like both the Southerly 47 and 57 and a swinging keel is important to me, but I really want a center cockpit and the helm at the companionway bulkhead. I like to be protected in bad weather and seas, and I like an aft master cabin. I also like the idea of your new 485 boat but my finances probably won't. A used Beneteau CC 57 is the closest to what I want in a sailboat, except for the swing keel. I have enjoyed every one of your videos.....thank you for them all !!
Glad you enjoy our videos Ed. We also wanted protection in bad weather and that's why we wanted a pilothouse and nav station to steer inside :-) We also get the aft master stateroom plus a nice big aft cockpit.
I was fooled by the video and a very late night viewing. Having a swing keel, a hard stand-up pilothouse that protects against the cold spray and an aft master cabin in your new 485 boat will work for me, even though it is not a center cockpit. I have always wanted to sail to the Far East through the NW Passage and also to visit the Antarctic and of course the warm shoal draft areas. For me, the most important item is the swing keel and then the hard pilothouse, followed by all electric furling sails. Yeah, I just want to sit and drive ;).
Next time you guy's go on a boat trip please don't forget me!!! lol😂 very beautiful. I could use a tan too💙💚💙🌅⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⚓🌞
You are welcome :-) And some day we hope to sail to Trinidad and Tobago too!
Very nice video although would have liked more specs.
When my wife and I were watching the Season 10 episode where you and Sheryl are crossing the Caribbean, there's a segment where you are walking to the bow of the boat while sailing and we noticed that there didn't seem to be any handholds on the cabin of DS III. In looking at the drawings of DS IV, there don't seem to be any shown. I'm curious about your comments regarding cabin top handholds; they seem to be disappearing on the European designs.
Hi Gary. Its hard to see but there is a great handrail built cleverly into the cabin top above the main saloon window. It makes it very safe walking up to the mast. The new DS3 will have similar for sure!
did you guys drop the southerly for a catamaran?
No we were over visiting our new boat in build and (since we had no boat this fall) decided to help a friend take his new cat over to the Caribbean
I love the very concept of Southerly boats. So far, as a substantial modification of 47, I noticed havier bottom plate. Were there any changes made to the board itself? Is the new boat really any longer or did you decide to call it 485 just to distinguish this model from the previous 47?
The grounding plate and swing-keel are the same as the 47 but the hull is being extended and altered so the boat really is 1' longer 48... plus of course the deck is entirely new :-)
at 4:10 you mentioned a heavier bottom/center? plate. That's why I asked about a possible plate/board modification. A small swimming platform at the stern sure would make sense, too. (is this where that one additional foot will be located)
at 4:40 you also mention a heavier keel...
The grounding plate and keel are are both heavier than on our 49 if that clarifies it... yes the extended transom will be used for a small swimming platform :-)
is that the same watercraft at @1:15 and @1:20 ? what the heck was that ? never seen that before in my life!
LOL yes they are amazing and you are correct they are the same craft. They are Moth class foiling dinghy... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moth_(dinghy)
I thought you already had a Southerly sailboat
It's all a little bit confusing. You are talking about the southerly 480 and showing an internal plan that is identical to that of the new Discovery 48. Are we speaking of the same boat, just two different brand names?
You are correct... its confusing :-) The Discovery 48 will have a fixed keel but it will be the same basic boat as our new Southerly 480 Distant Shores which will have the lifting keel!
You are so professional that I feel a bit embarrassed making this suggestion. After watching this video, I was still left with many questions. Please give a thorough overview of the boat: more interior video explaining each feature, engine room, other amenities, etc. I do appreciate the time spent on the boats shallow water footage which was extensive. This video could have been about that feature alone. Please go slowly through the boat's interior features such as sleeping quarters, chart table, heaters, storage, watermakers, etc. Less than one minute was dedicated to talk about below deck.
Thanks for your suggestions Lydia. We will definitely do more in-depth review of the boat in the future. The test boat we had was not cleaned up or ready for filming and we only has a limited time aboard her. We have much more on the shallow draft capability in a separate video with our own boat... ua-cam.com/video/C1GDW4uaHoA/v-deo.html
Hey, thanks for getting back to me. I look forward to it. Fair winds
Im confused - 2 months ago you published a video saying you moved onto a Cat. What happened there??
Did you see the cat video? We moved aboard for a month in the BVI chartering a Voyage 500...
Ha! I watched the first few minutes a couple of times but I moved onto other videos of yours. I think the wave crashing on the bottom of the bridge was so loud it turned be off.
LOL Me too!
Someone please tell me why he's wearing foul-weather gear and PFD on the beach?
Adam Frisoli To wade in and out of the water! Once I put safety gear on at work, I don’t remove it until the jobs done!
Had to Rewatch this video. Its last good video they have done.. :(
EMPTY BOAT ?
Err! So sorry, but the metal, bird-like things on shore stole your thunder. What are those?
Do you mean the foiling "Moths" one of the first class of sailboat to foil?
Distant Shores TV Wow! I didn't know that. Thanks very much.
