  • Our new Southerly 480 sailboat came out of the mould at the Discovery Yachts Shipyard in the UK last week and we were there to document it! In this latest update we show you the laying-up process for the hull of Distant Shores III, show the hull coming out of the mould, check out the unique swing keel and take a look at the “plug” for the new pilothouse cabin top. (A plug is a mock-up from which the final mould will be made.) We’ve been working with the design team on this new model of Southerly Yacht, the first one to be built by Discovery Yachts Group. We’re excited to show you the build process of this new boat! It is the third Southerly Yacht we’ve owned. We’re definitely fans!

    Great video. The deck plug they were building was a modification of an existing deck hence the " let's add a pilot house " design work going on.
    Good way to do it. It's interesting to see that the construction of the hull is the same way I was molding hulls in 1978 in the U.K. Even down to the clear gelcoat for below the waterline, supposedly to have better resistance to osmosis but a better choice of material will make a lot more difference. I suspect they are using a higher grade of gelcoat anyway but the clear is not needed any more. Most of it goes back to Lloyds 100A specification , hence the solid hull below the waterline ( good!)and the foam ribs a modification of the old wood scantlings. But defiantly quality work if a little old fashioned. But hey why mess with success......it's just expensive and labor intensive .
    Cheers Warren ( USA now)

    I'm ecstatic that #3 will be a pilothouse version!! I do not enjoy standing at a helm that's outside in crappy weather. My dream ship would be a Discovery 57 or 58 (my home) with a swing keel, mast furling main and the helm inside the protection of a pilothouse, similar to the Amel 55 helm (I love that Discovery raised saloon with its great location for the chart table/nav station). I prefer not to go outside the pilothouse for the entire Northwest Passage ;). Thank you Paul for this exciting video!
    Addition: I really like that Discovery uses foam coring and not water absorbing balsa wood.

    • @onthebeaches
      @onthebeaches 6 років тому +2

      Ed...I too have always wondered why someone would want to stand outside in foul weather gear taking on all the elements. Is that the definition of a salty sailor. Ü I've been in search of a center cockpit so can avoid this. Nice to see someone finally speak about this part of sailing Oh yeah, a wheelhouse would be perfect too! PEACE OUT!

      Yachts do have a Dodger. A canopy that fits around the front of the cockpit area. Not a strong as a solid pilot house in bad weather though.
      Nice to see a British made yacht. Specially one that’s perfect for shallow water / seas / reefs etc.
      If money was no object. I would have the Southerly 540

    Thanks for another good video. QUESTION: Since your Southerly is produced by the Discovery Yachts, why not go with a Discovery 55 or 58 instead? Could you also explain your choice for a retractable keel and comment on your experience with it (maintenance/cleaning/etc.)?

  • @buynsell365

    Good Afternoon, I love the southerly's. I was wondering, you sailed your first boat you built yourself, for something like 30 years, then you bought a southerly and sailed it like 4 years and now you bought another one. Is this because southerly is sponsoring you?

  • @LoanwordEggcorn
    @LoanwordEggcorn 6 років тому +1

    Congratulations, and thanks for sharing the birth of your new boat! Great initial tour. She looks good.
    The pivot pin on the swing keel looks relatively small, maybe 25 or 30mm diameter; perhaps that's by design as a deliberate failure point in case of a catastrophic strike.
    I'd wager the French are ahead on building techniques, due to government support for their boating industry (which I'm not necessarily advocating) and experience curve effects. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experience_curve_effects For example, some of the recreational boat builders may be able to do a virtual walkthrough in their computer design, adjust the design in the computer, etc., like builders of big commercial ships.
    BTW compare French government support of their boating industry (via tax incentives for boat buyers) versus the U.S. government essentially destroying its boating industry via the so-called "luxury tax".

      @DistantShoresTV  6 років тому

      Thanks Harley. Its about a 6-8 month build for this 48 footer (longer for the bigger boats) Payments are made in stages 10% - 25% etc as hull layup starts - deck on etc. However there is currently a waiting list or 4 other boats in build first - they can be started every 9 weeks due to being in the mold. We will shoot more when we visit again in November.

    Great to see the shiny new boat looks great pilot house is always good for colder climates. Are they called beams? Have been told stringers and ribs are there different terms for wooden and fiberglass boats??

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Al!
      You're right the longitudinal beams are called stringers and the ribs run across the boat. I was basically referring to the concept that fibreglass could be formed into a beam structure by laying it up over the foam shapes. Good call!!

    when the water level started to drop, your boat runs aground and you lift the keel, at this moment your boat leans on the base of the boat and on two rudders. Do the rudders standing on the ground survive? or they are specifically designed to withstand such loads?

    So it looks like the interior will have that sort of half-upper-deck like the Discovery 50+'s that lets you have a nav station/command console with a nearly 270-degree view? I always thought that was brilliant modern yacht design, wish I could afford one.

    Paul - been thinking a LOT about your Southerly's I noticed you have stuck to virtually same size all the way through. im going to make the assumption that you could buy a 55 if you wanted it.
    Im asking because Im getting my snot together to pick up a new boat and sail for a good while. at first I was thinking great lets get a 50-60 feet boat, for all the reasons one would get 60 feet of boat. but im slowly starting to think the smarter play is a boat that goes a lot more places, tons of little places in scandinavia just don't do 60feet boat with their draft. im sure same thing virtually all over the world.
    Would love to see 45 minutes with the two of you laying the cards on the table - what boats did you look at, how big and how small, name them. and lets hear the pro's and con's that led you to pick yet another awesome Southerly. (Frankly Im loving the 480 and also the 57 they check sooooo many check boxes)
    And the second topic.. you have bought NEW each time it seems. you COULD probably pick up a VERY nice slightly used for maybe half the money, toss 100-200k into a refit. and still be ahead on money. Why grab a new boat each time.?
