- Players entering game stores in 2020 would receive a free deck to welcome them too the game. The issue was, they were terrible. Today we'll find out how many cards we have to add to those Welcome Decks to make them beat the best deck in Modern.

This isnt the decklist for that sweet white deck
But can an Un-Deck win against a Modern deck? 😎
Thanks for having me, this was a blast 🤩
Love your vids btw
I opened this video and no intent to make you uncomfortable, but I immediately thought “oh damn, he’s really good looking”
Hope that makes you smile rather than cringe XD
no way; I thought I'd never see anything from this account again
Was it great to be there?
Haven't seen the vid yet, but my faith is strong in the cooking god
Phil just casually putting in a timewalk that essentially did nothing is hilarious
Worst case it just cycles for zero mana. Second worst case it's a Growth Spiral that untaps all your lands.
It's a funny card where even the do-nothing case is actually kind of inherently broken when you think about it.
Ah you know, better have them than need them :P
Like most timewalks do. That card isnt good in a vacuum, its broken when absuing other cards with it. But more often than not its just a $4000 Explore.
@@robert8984 Someone else said this too, at literally worst case it is a zero mana cycle. That would be played in every deck that could.
@@gibblefoon399 So why isnt it played in every deck that could? Not many decks in vintage play time walk, certainly not all of them.
Timewalk, draw a card, pass
Unfathomably based. This is exceptional content
When I play Shandalar and my deck has 4xTime Walk, 4xTimetwister and 4xAncestral … I can say that sometimes Time Walk is just a 2 mana draw a card lol.
we only wish all of our cantrips gave us upkeep steps
It is basically a really expensive blue explore
The Growth Spiral and Explore comparisons fail to account for how Timewalk is "free" (assuming it resolves). The "cycling" mode of Timewalk, where you have nothing in play and cast nothing else that turn.... is essentially "0 mana draw a card, on a blue card". That's not Growth Spiral, that's pretty much Gitaxian Probe. Which is banned in modern, legacy, pauper, and restricted in vintage. So still pretty damn good, even in the "worst case".
Phil is my absolutely favorite brewer and favorite mtg content creator outside of cardmarket. I'm so happy this happened
Phil and Cardmarket are the perfect examples that Germans can have humor
Judging by the view count, Phil is the best MTG goldfish has to offer and I’m here for it.
I'd love to see a similar style of game as this (starter deck vs. competitive deck), but with the starter deck being able to see the opponent's hand and being able to search their library for any card whenever they would draw.
Essentially posing the question, could a starter deck beat a competitive deck if conditions were perfect.
It's a fun idea, but it might need to be a precon with a bit more of a punch than a welcome deck, if only to have removal that's not ridiculously overcosted.
Have them fetch a land every single turn and yeah, I'd take the welcome deck. The other deck basically only gets their starting hand (although depending on the hand, that might be enough)
@sorin_markov I think he meant budget deck gets to draw the perfect card every turn while the meta deck plays normally. More of a "can a starter deck beat the best meta deck with perfect information and the perfect draw in every scenario"
So, basically the starter deck, but its being played by Yugi Moto lol. I'm here for it.
I dont think it has a chance with that mana courve, exept, if the copetitive deck draws as bad as possible
Who comes up with the concepts for videos like these? So creative - and so much fun to watch.
12:28
- The values of this deck greatly increased in the last minute.
- Oh, because of the fetch land!
Hahahaha yes Carl, because of the fetch land lmao
and then the 3999 euro reserved list card...
Carl’s use of the wardrobe budget continues to be fantastic. Cutting to Carl in his aviators and bomber like jacket @2:52 does such an excellent job of setting the tone for the video.
Such a great idea for a video. It'd be funny to have a little counter in the corner keeping track of how expensive Phil's deck got as the games went on.
Hahaha! That would have been a great idea! I'm ashamed I did not think of that 😅
@@CardmarketMagicMaybe next time! 😊
The unhinged circus ringmaster counterplay that you two have with each other seems so much fun. Im really glad you two got to put together this content for us.
I absolutely love Phil. Just always brings such a good vibe and energy to every video he's in. Also makes some the best produced, highest quality content in the Magic content world.
yea but wth is that voice? he sounds almost like a muppet lol
Why don't you marry him if you love him so much? 😏
Phil and Seth are my two favorite MtG content creators. Please get them on here more often. Love your channel!
Yea i wish that seth would fly out to berlin to play them in person, he could bring richard too
Haha wild. I love how the free deck quickly became worth more then the 1500 deck lol
instantly became worth more lmao
Some say random scam is the best deck in modern but we now all know that 12 post was just better
This deck couldn't have beat 12 post without the video being MUCH longer ;)
12 post is also not legal, kinda impossible to be "best deck in modern" if the deck isnt even playable in modern.
@@ich3730 They are referencing the other series Cardmarket did where they had a tourney of all the best Modern Decks of each year, 12 Post came out on top in the end, which kind of showed why its key pieces got banned out.
I hope this becomes a series so we can have increasingly weird cards added on those starter decks
anya et tost
I swear y'all come up with fresh content every time I see an upload. I just know my next lunch will be that much brighter when I get the notif.
It is an excellent idea for new videos. Brewing from 0,00 to beat a format top tier. I could watch that for days. Keep it up, please!
Actually in 14:12, if you don't cast a spell with rebound , it will stay in exile, not go to the graveyard. And Ephemerate can't be cast because it has no legal targets.
Yes good point! We only noticed afterwards. Luckily it didn't end up mattering :)
The Solitude should have still been in play, because you can't evoke Fury with 4 objects on the stack like that!
@ArchaicEX fury cannot be evoked at instant speed. It was evoked after all the spells had resolved
Actually the first ephemerate goes into the graveyard because it fizzled (due to the second ephemerate), while the second should have stayed in exile.
And no one is pointing out that there was no card pitched to cast the solitude in the first place
Please bring him on the channel more often, this was great to watch!
This is the best Magic channel by far. There's a ton of other great channels out there but these videos are just so original and interesting!
Amen to that.
The subtle Daybreak Charger stats changing on the left of the screen at 15:30 after the timewalk is 1000x funnier than it has any right to be
Hey, it's Phil! I'm so glad you folks managed to get him around for a few videos.
So much a cooler concept than I thought from the thumbnail - I love this slow deck building concept!
The double button press for ephemerate solitude was fantastic xD
The scam fight at 13:41 was incredible
But fury doesn't have flash...
@@אביעדמזוז-פ5ע Fury was not cast with Flash
@@CardmarketMagicexcept it was lol
@dailygamingoftodAy it was not 😅 it does not have flash, it was obviously cast after ephemerate resolved, as solitude stays on the battlefield
that was hilarious in many ways indeed... both in flavor and the comedy of rules errors... No pitch for solitude and fury at instant speed XD...
JUDGE!
I was listening to the video and said.... It's the brew guy. that makes those awesome videos I can't get enough of!
Brewer's kitchen!!! I'm so glad you got him as a guest on this channel, his energy works really well alongside Carl
Carl's "Iceman from Top Gun by way of Kermit" is very on point 😅 That's style right there!
this should be a format! get the starter decks, you can add something like 20 cards and see who wins, would love to see a tournament of that
I was hoping that phil would eventually just play scam, woulda been hilarious, but this was also the best, top tier content
That was actually way more fun to watch than I expected. Well done gents. Great video as always!
I listen to Phil all the time on MTG Goldfish podcast and have never seen him until now, nothing like I pictured him 😂
Haha, I really enjoyed watching this. Please more of that kind of content 😆
Actually you guys playing with starter decks more often in general, where you then upgrade them gradually to meet the contemporary demands of competetive playing would kinda be interesting to see more of.
The typical base rakdos deck content of Ragavan, Bowmasters, Thoughtseize, Lightning Bolt etc. is probably one of the best to test against, because of how popular (and really annoying to play against...) it is. And also because it forces you to change up your starter deck significantly to have significantly better answers. Plus a starter deck might make you play with cards you wouldn't normally choose to for obvious reasons, but occationally might leave you surprised with how effective certain cards can be in the right context of a deck :)
Love the creativity y'all pour out! I want to see if a green intro deck can win if every card has cascade, and for each loss, it gains an additional cascade!
That would be a wild video 😅
I think Carl's mind splintered a little bit at the 4000€ "pay 2 draw a card" play, that wasn't the laugh of someone sailing the smooth waves of reality lol
That was so much fun to watch! I Love this Format, just to see, how much it takes to beat a completly constructed Deck and how many little changes can achieve so much 😊 (and Timewalk of course)
Please make more Videos like this!
0:40 small thing but man, I love this match on action. Great little shot 💕
Very fun video. The moment when initiative was almost lost was so clutch, NGL.
Oh, yes. Yes yes yes. This video idea was so much fun! I love the new ideas y'all come up with week after week!
I'm happy you enjoy your content :) we put so much love into it!
Leyline was a good pick I didn't think of. I also originally thought only adding Modern legal cards.
I probably would have done Leyline, Sanctifier en-vec, and Auriok Champion as my first 3/12 cards
Moat. And a Luminarch's Ascension. Or any other 1 card win con.
@@neoneanderthal2658 Moat would have been a good call. Didn't really consider it because my brain was focused on Modern Legal cards.
@@arsteel2388 I got that part. Most of my knowledge of MTG comes from MTGForge's Adventure mode and that thing does NOT care for such trite concepts as formatted play, your opponents having only 20 life, Jace NOT being a complete nightmare to play against, etc. Hell, I'm surprised it doesn't let me play Gleemox. So, my knowledge base is kinda warped. Rakdos Scam isn't even good there. Could probably beat the Colored castles on normal. No chance against greater plainswalkers tho. The only reason I even remembered Moat is that I was looking for extras for my Angel deck yesterday.
@@neoneanderthal2658 I kinda giggled at "the best deck in the format isnt even good in my bootleg version of shandalar"
@@ich3730 Tbh, the thing was on par with Shandalar when I first started playing it(and I thought it was done then). That was years ago. It has surpassed it by order of magnitude since. But it is the closest comparison. It's even supposed to take place in the same world. Apparently defeating the 5 wizards results in their knowledge of making dungeons was leaked to the general populace. They're all over the place now. Not short either. But it(the deck) really isn't viable. For comparison - a knight, a high-ish tier white enemy starts with 63 health on Impossible difficulty(you start with 8, but there are ways to raise it to around 30). Rakdos Scam just can't output THAT much damage. But it's a competitive deck, so it's kinda excused. It's supposed to deal 20 fast.
The initiative is definitely the fastest way to turn a starter deck into a competitive deck.
I once got mocked by my cube opponent for playing timewalk as "the blue explore," on turn two. Draw a card, play a land, thats it.
I'd love to see a Pay To Win variant of this where both players have a budget to build their ever-increasing sideboards. Losing costs money and the game is won when someone is broke.
magic monopoly
You have an incredibly cringe idea - "losing costs money" will only make it snowball really fast, while the already-winning deck wins further.
@@TehKorwinMikke Losing costing money is required to eventually end the game. Without that rule, players could just upgrade until they sit on their last cent. Since you can only lose through going broke and the only way to lose money is voluntary, the game is broken and can never end.
@@ich3730 Or you could just, you know, be a sane person and set a number of games/victories to end it? This way you will have an actually tight, balanced back-and-forth, instead of turning it into "the loser keeps losing harder with each loss".
love all of the crazy content coming. Carl staying on character as well is perfect :D
This video went absolutely nowhere that I expected it to. I thought that he was going to slowly shape the deck into some kind of counter-meta modern deck, which he kind of was with the solitudes and ephemerates. Then he pulled out a time walk.
I think it would be neat if you could all somehow create completely original decks and battle them together. A way it might work would be smashing two random precons together and trimming to 60 card decks? This video was a lot of fun to watch! (Phil is terrific, btw).
They did a similar one a while ago, they gave 50€ to each player and 30 minutes to build a deck. They were in a tournament with actual physical shops.
It was great fun too
@@sh41 could you get me a link for this video? For some reason, I cannot find it
@@dragoon9airsoft560 ua-cam.com/video/gz3KFugohww/v-deo.htmlsi=mG4fZMih4rNWcYxG
It was 100€ and 20 minutes. I really enjoyed that one
I wish mtg still made these decks. I taught so many people how to play with them.
I loved the video and also the fact that there are about 3 game rule violations between 13:30 and 14:20 (Phil never pitched a card to evoke Solitude, the first Ephemerate is fizzled and should go to the graveyard immediately and the 2nd ephemerate should stay in exile as it has no legal targets to be cast on)
Incredible video. Makes me want to see how busted a no banlist budget challenge would be!
This was insane i loved the concept !
the time walk was a bit low but the building was insane
The idea of a MTG roguelike is pretty great!
This format is great. Especially, for maybe intermediate players to see how certain cards interact together vs strong meta cards. If that makes sense.
I really hope we'll see Phil again. He's so fun to watch
God that man has a wonderful voice :). Do this more, and invite Phil more :)
I say this from a place of love and appreciation for you guys and this channel.
Carl plays magic like yall are filming with actual tape instead of digital space 😂 like hurry it up we don’t have the film!!
The longer the game actions and pace, the more expensive and time consuming the video is to produce and the worse the youtube viewer retention is. I play that fast because I make the videos and I know the difference it makes 😅
@@CardmarketMagic totally fair! I dig the energy it was a fun observation ❤️ much love from Texas yall ❤️❤️
Carl’s laugh when time walk was played is probably the best thing I’ve ever heard!
This was a lot of fun! Seems like a good idea for a series!
I'd love to see this become a regular collab with Phil, and add a "Deck Cost" tracker as the free deck gets more expensive.
This video was pure gold. Had fun all the wag through.
Those additions were pretty funny, although I might have just reached for 4 sanctifier en-vec first and still be fairly budget. This was better content, though, for sure.
Okay, that was really entertaining to watch. Hilarious and absurd, and now I want more like this.
I love that at the end of the video the tag still said "free deck" 😂
“All it takes is Sol Ring and a card banned in Legacy”
That’s Modern for y’all…
That cardmarket arm patch is sweet!
The time walk is one of the funniest moments on this entire channel. Absolutely genius.
I liked this a lot. Looks fun slowly upgrading the worst deck to counter some of the best
I love the universes beyond crossovers you guys do with other channels
Easily my favorite video from you guys, this was amazing
I have been loving all the MTG Goldfish collabs. Would love to see Phil on again he is the him and Seth are the GOATs at brewing.
What would be interesting is having a new MTG player and a Pro. Then seeing, how much of a more powerful deck the new player needs to be able to beat the pro reliably. What is the tipping point in card power, that outways pro players.
This was such a fun video to watch. Time Walk with nothing to do was hilarious lol.
I love how Jamin just completely freaks out seeing a physical, real actual time walk.
that card is legendary(ly expensive) lmao
Great video idea to replicate the average game played in the just for fun room on MTGO
Amazing video concept. More please!
Other than covertgoblue amd meryn yall are the only ones putting out original intersting mtg content
You all are such great content creators, always brightens my day to see a new upload, especially when collabing with such great MTG UA-camrs! Keep up the great work guys. :)
I'm thrilled that we make your lunch breaks better :) that's really the goal of what we do! Have a great day :D
I have a similar idea, only whenever you loose, you keep your board as it is, but your opponent has to start again. You both draw seven cards again ofcourse :)
Or when you loose, you can remove 1(4) cards from your opponents deck
13:16 "Should be so good, but it's not"
Totally me me when testing a deck I made myself
Seeing Phil timewalk for basically no value had me rolling!
I think it would be really interesting to see the guys battle with decks filled with all the busted legacy enablers and otherwise just super fair creatures like daybreak charger to go with them. Kind of show that timewalk/sensei's top/preordain/whatever can only really be as good as the cards around them.
Or maybe it will be broken and prove me completely wrong!
Having Phil on for these past couple videos has been great
The creativity of the videos is astounding
Loved seeing the goldfish crew on your channel! And y’all if you haven’t seen Phil’s videos they are the shit 🎉🎉🎉
YESSS. ANOTHER COLLAB OF MY FAV CONTENT CREATORS
11:50 Well, that escalated quickly... "Starter deck", aha aha I like it.
The timewalk as an explore was brilliant lol
First card to comes in my mind was Santifier en-vec; but those antscam solitude and I draw a card for 4K€ were great! Pretry funny!
I can't wait for the next episode when they pit a Barret 50cal against a new born baby, but everytime the baby screams he gets another layer of Kevlar to beat the bullet.
I Don't know where I was going with that but I love Phil, Brewers kitchen is my favorite segment on goldfish this should be great
This entire video summed up my high school "Kitchen Table" experience vs my rich friend
I think this helps emphasize just the sheer amount of removal is in a Modern deck. A number of them also double as threats now, but it's tough to play fair Magic when you have to run twenty pieces of removal to deal with the unfair parts.
This was a great idea for a video. I'd love to see it done with the other free decks. :)
14:30
It feels like mono blue against mono blue.
Card against card against card to look who stops the other better.
I like how this video started as one player valiantly struggling to play real magic as Garfield intended in the face of total BS, and ended with that same player becoming just like the villain by playing nonsense cards to win.
I mean, magic as garfield intended would be some degenerate channel/fireball decks, Oh, and without playsets of course, so you need 20 black lotus to be optimal. And a few dozen ancestral recall for consistency.
You should try this concept but with Toffel piloting the bad deck and a brand new player piloting the modern deck (given a few lifelines from Carl and Jamin)
13:53 damn, didn't know Fury got errata'd to get flash
Same errata that made solitude not require you to exile another card to evoke it
It was Carls turn he could have just cast it after the resolution of everything else.
@@zsorens4570 Oh yeah, fsr I thought ephemerate was a delayed flicker here
14:15 when you don't cast Ephemerate from rebound it actually stays in exile! Not important here obviously but a good thing to remember if your deck has any graveyard interaction.
I did not expect that turn of events!
Those were fun games, also like your cardmarket jacket.
It should become official merch if it isn't already.
lol i was thinking about jamming in legacy initiative cards the whole video, glad he had the same idea
I know the starters around crimson wow had the elements of a semi decent lifegain creature combo deck, but it really needed well of lost dreams to make it work, and voice of the blessed is so much better a pump target than the ajani's pridemate you got, it probably impossible to make work just with starters.
