    Looks good. I noticed that you only have one balance lead plugged into the charger. The way youre charging the batteries the one that doesnt have the balance leads plugged in runs the risk of under, or worse, overcharging. I suggest, if you want to charge both batteries at the same time you either get a dual charger or another singlem

    You need to tin the wires first. You can't afford bad connections in high vibration environments and over time the joints will fatigue (+use heatshrink for every joint as well as silicon/hot glue to reinforce, also very inexpensive) Here is a link to how to properly solder xt60s 😀

    Nice build, but I want to hear some feedback on the motor down the road. The problem with Outrunners I have heard on homemade and commercial boards is they are dead within about a month. They are so heavily vented and that dust, water and rocks get into them easily and the coils get chewed up in a hurry. You are the first person I have seen put a cover over the motor, interesting to see if your board last longer then others because of it.
    I am building a couple of boards right now based on 2/3hp 12vdc brushed motors because they are sealed well and I have seen people use 1 hp 12-24vdc motors for go karts and wrack them up as equivalent to about 6.5hp gas motor as far as how the kart performs. I figured for a skateboard 2/3hp will do. If not, easily upgraded to a 1 hp motor. I am trying out Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries as well because they seem to be the best thing in batteries at the moment and found a great 50Ah 12v battery for a few hundred $ (Also, yes, big battery, I want to be able to ride it for several hours before the battery hits cut-off voltage). Thin, mounts under the board, same width as the deck, runs its entire length from front to rear truck, so I have to mount the motor behind the rear truck. The other thing I am doing is using a mountainboard for the base rather then a longboard with a set of MBS brakes, replacing one disc with an 80 tooth sprocket for #25 chain and an 11 tooth sprocket on the motor because I am not worried about having super top speed, I want it to have some grunt, so based on motor specs and gearing it should top out around 20km/h (Fast enough in my opinion, don't want speed wobbles). I went with chain to begin with on a gut feeling those belts would snap with too much frequency, sounds like I was right on that though!
    I am hoping it turns out as well as yours seem to have already, but I really am curious about using out-runners, I just have heard many unfortunate stories about them simply because they are usually protected a bit better being inside an RC vehicle. Hopefully you can provide feedback down the road on yours, whether they survive, get weaker, or die completely. Definitely subbing so I can see more about this.
    Also, just as an aside, if you are using 2 11.1v batteries in series for a 22.2v system, and a 192kv rated motor, and running a 3:1 ratio on a roughly 77mm (3 inch) diameter wheel, isn't top speed only about 20km/h, not 25 as stated in the description? And I am not entirely sure those are 77mm wheels, they look closer to 63mm (2.5 inch) or so. Not sure, just curious about specs of your setup with the outrunner.

    • @dudeskidaddy
      @dudeskidaddy 8 років тому

      I've been running a 147 KV brushless outrunner on my board for well over 200 miles. Going as strong as ever. The belts are pretty tough (and quiet). I just changed my first one out but it was probably good for another 200 miles.

    a suggestion for a good addition would be to add a small alternator to another wheel on your board (would be quite simple to build your own) connect it to your battery so while you're riding your board it could provide a steady charge to your board so that you can achieve further distances and not have to charge your battery's as often.

    Please for the love of God get some heat shrink tubing to isolate all the wires. Just put it on the wire before you solder the connection, then slide it over and heat it with a heat gun or lighter.

    • @brutskyr1
      @brutskyr1 8 років тому

      i agree, please use some heatshrink tubing, thats most likely why your esc stopped working, the wires must have shorted out. rc cars go through lots of vibrations, much more than a longboard. the vibration definitely did not kill the esc

    • @Neomax25
      @Neomax25 8 років тому

      +Roman Brutsky 100% agree. considering his mechanical ability those electrics are scary. dirt, dust, water and mud ain't gonna stop a good brushless system but wiring like that and metal battery clamps directly on lipo batteries . . . . . asking for trouble.

    hi, just a sudgestion, i'm a bit into RC and i did check that motor it seem his best performances are achived with a 10 up to a 12s battery which will obviously make it quite fast (the motor is actually 192kv which will translate in 1920 theorical Rpm with a 10s) that should give you enough speed. But obviously you will need a better ESC for it. About the remote to have a better response you can use simple servocable passed trough the board and leading to a proportional switch that you can use directly with your foot... but this is just an idea :)

    • @taow
      @taow  8 років тому +3

  • @avrahambrea1919
    @avrahambrea1919 8 років тому +2

    just going to mention the laginess of the ESC is not because it's cheap it's just because it does not have enough amps I do RC and HobbyKing is one of my favorite RC websites and that motor you're using is a big motor and can probably handle up to 10 s lipo what i success you do is get an ESC with a high amp rating like 200 amps or more that way the ESC won't be laggy and also I noticed that you're using electric tape on the connectors you should probably use something like heat shrink it's much better

    Maybe this has already been said (I don't want to check all the comments ; ) ) but I would definitely make a cover for the battery. The cells are pretty much unprotected in the type of battery you are using and are easily damaged, so it would probably improve their life time quite a bit. And there is also a chance for them to explode...

    6:05 no you cant improve the range by adding a 3rd battery. you either have to connect 2 more batterys in parallel or you wont get more range. adding a 3rd one in series does not improve the range.. it just leads to a higher voltage from 22.2V to 33.3V

    You might consider using a DC-DC boost converter to increase the voltage whilst using your two batteries in parallel to increase battery life.
    This would be a lot cheaper than adding a third battery in series, and may be more effective (something you could test for yourself, boost converters cost next-to nothing)

    • @justinwiden
      @justinwiden 8 років тому

      yo fam are you high? You want to use a AT LEAST 20A boost converter to step up the voltage to the ESC to "increase your range" what?!?!?! The amount of power you would loose from heat would drop your battery life, let alone trying to actually find a boost converter that can handle that much amperage and get hotter than the surface of the sun. Anyways just a stupid idea, sorry man.

    • @KlockworXMusic
      @KlockworXMusic 8 років тому

      Unfortunately you are wrong and Jdog is correct. DC-DC booster will have losses, as everything does. As well, theoretically lets say you are using the 2 batteries he has. In parallel they last twice as long, but top speed is halfed. In series, top speed is double, but battery life is cut in half. Overall using the 2 batteries he has in series or parallel will give the same range, but one is fast and discharges quicker, the other is slower but discharges slower as well.
      Another example is like the difference between running a 12v and a 24v dc motor. If they are both rated for the same wattage and speed, the 12v one draws twice the current the 24v one does. Say you use 2 identical batteries for both motors, but you have them paralleled for the 12v motor and in series for the 24v motor. In parallel you have 2C capacity, but your 12v motor draws twice the current of the 24v motor. The 24v motor draws half the current but your batteries in series have only 1C capacity.
      Do you understand where this is going? In a small system like this especially, running the identical batteries in series or parallel will give the same range, top speed and time to discharge are what change.
      A DC-DC booster is only adding losses into the system, as well, you can only go so fast on a board before you get speed wobbles and safety becomes a thing, so adding increasing the Ah rating of the system to give longer run time would be the same total distance increase as adding the same battery in series to go faster, but would be safer because your top speed does not increase if you parallel batteries.

      Fine, I won't lecture you. There is no, "it may be more effective". IT WILL NOT BE MORE EFFECTIVE, NO TESTING REQUIRED. But if you really think it will, find a 3000W DC-DC Boost Converter that weighs less then the battery (1lb), is smaller then the battery, costs less then the battery, and is efficient enough that would provide enough benefit to range, longevity or ease of use that it is worth using over a third battery. Make it work, show me, prove me wrong if you really believe it will work. I sure as hell wouldn't invest my money in that idea though.

    you need to re-do all of those joints in the wire with proper tiedowns and heatshrink, the tape covering the solder joints won't stand up to any dirt or moisture from the road and then you'll end up with bare joints which with lipo batteries is a recipe for disaster

    from vaping one thing I've learned is don't charge batteries in a different circuit to the way you use them also you would have been better off buying some new heat shrink wrap, pulling the current wrap off and then connecting them in series directly and re-wrapping the whole thing this would eliminate a lot of voltage drop you get with your triangle connection

      I'm sorry but what voltage drop are you talking about with his triangle connection? P.S. I don't recommend you start off a comment like that "from vaping"

    • @mikemchale2513
      @mikemchale2513 8 років тому

      +Jdog Awesome as the voltage from the batteries travels through the wire it will lose some voltage because of the resistance of the wires

    • @justinwiden
      @justinwiden 8 років тому

      Well yes conductors have some resistance but in this case its going over no more than MAYBE a foot of wire, so the voltage drop is negligible.

    • @mikemchale2513
      @mikemchale2513 8 років тому

      +Jdog Awesome well you see, we're talking like 10ths of volts dropping which to you may be nothing and probably wouldn't make a difference here in this situation but it is there

    Artof, this is great. All these skills you've developed are combined here in a fun and practical project. You've made it look easy too, but I bet it took quite a bit of thinking about.
    I hate to be a damp squib about this, and I hate to cramp your style and all that, but two things. firstly please be safe and use helmet, knee and elbow pads. Second, have you looked into the legal aspects of using an electrically propelled vehicle on the public highway? I personally don't know, but I imagine that the worse case would be that you need some sort of licence and insurance and could risk prosecution. Again, I don't know but really it's up to you to find out how you stand legally. Otherwise, only use it in places that are not public roads and streets. It would be a shame for you to risk your future with some sort of prosecution over a legal "technicality".
    Best wishes matey.
