- The SEGA Genesis Mini is out this week on Thursday September 19th and in Japan they are selling add on accessories to go with the system. This includes replicas of the 32X as well as the Model One SEGA CD all of which attaches to the Genesis Mini to build the Tower we all remember. Overall it looks ridiculous, but it's such a fun idea I can't help but like it.

Annnd the Sega Channel... at one point I had a Genesis with the Sega Channel, and Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic 2 attached. It was soooo awesome.
I mean, if they just came out with a Sega Channel fake cart to go with the Mini here, and then let us connect it to the internet via a USB adapter or something it would be awesome. So what? They start a small server somewhere and host a bunch of games on it from that era and bring back the old Sega Channel loading screen and interface? Yes! I mean everyone else is creating game streaming/ subscription services. Come on Sega re-release Sega Channel! It will never happen. But it would be fun.

Sega just made a few of those to send out to UA-cam "influencers". The ones they are actually selling have the all the Japanese names and stuff.
Exactly, the system was only called the Genesis in the US and Canada. Here in Europe, as well as Japan, Australia, and elsewhere, it was called the Megadrive
Exactly. If I remember correctly only North America knew it as the Genesis wile the rest of the world knows it as the Megadrive.

@@DefyantFoxV2 I think Megadrive was a name owned by some random US company that is why they ended up calling the system with a different name there. Something similar happened here in Europe with StarFox for the SNES which we knew as Starwing. Some random owned the rights of the name and that is why is different.

It's fun when a company knows to have fun with a bit of it's own past. Sega has been makin some better moves lately and I hope they realize that they should continue to make good on that promise of doing more for the western fans after their admission that they've been letting us down for a long time.

i think replacing the guts of the Genesis Mini with a single board computer, and adding all the games from all 3 systems would be kick ass, and you would not need an HDD, as I think a 256GB Micro SD would hold the games for all 3 systems with room to spare.

@@CommodoreFan64 Put an NFC reader in the cartridge flap, and an NFC sticker in the cartridge then you can have the emulator open up the correct rom when the game is inserted. You could always 3D print more mini cartridges.

@@John6-40 I never had a Sega Genesis as a kid. My mom did have a Coleco Vision, and I played it as a kid. I remember the big as fuck AC adapter. Young me was annoyed trying to plug it in, lol.

I love that Sega knew they went overboard in the 90s on the add-ons and are rolling with it.
This is American packaging it's the mega drive in Japan and Europe. So why isn't this out here?

That was my first thought as well. As soon as I saw genesis realized it much be bound for US. Be interesting to see if it is on store shelves at launch with the mini on thursday.

I owned this complete tower when I was a teenager. Haha My dad worked for Sega, and brought them home as they came out.

As a proud Sega Genesis Mini owner, I want that whole set. Heck, I'd be happy just to have one mini replica cartridge. (Japan actually has toy vending machines of those from Sega.)
it's nostalgia and I really appreciate for Sega as a company that used to associate themselves with hardware going above and beyond for their fans. Unlike what Sony did that just did it for the sake of a cash grab

Reminds me of the almost useless Famicom Disc Drive I got for my Famicom Mini. It was actually just a detailed cardboard storage container that sits under the mini, but I still love it.

Watching this makes me nostalgic for my Sega Genesis/CD combo setup. I always preferred the appearance of the tower design of the original models to the later Model 2 revisions with their wider footprint.

You're correct as back in trhe day i had Japanese imported Mega drive in the UK. Genesis is North America
The mega drive edition also includes in the back cardboard sleeve a Sega service department envelope with a poster with the mega drive blueprints and game list. And a book with the Genesis/mega drive technical drawings.
6:00 The lock on the Sega CD wasn't to lock the console into place; it was made to lock the Aux mixing cord into place. It demonstrates that in the original manual.

Weird that Sonic and Knucles isn't on the Mini.
Sega has a history of not re releasing sonic 3 and knuckles cause of the copyright issues with the Michael Jackson music. Even when they did a few re releases they altered the music.
There are plans to add it with the Genesis Link service.

It blew my mind as a kid that if you put a non Sonic game into the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge you got a sweet secret mini game. Those were better days.

I have a box I made in school. We had to cut and tape stuff we wanted and the Genesis model 2, which is the Genesis I had but I didn't have the Gen 2 CD or the 32X but I put a picture of the 3 together on that box. I grabbed the box after watching this video and looking at it and seeing a portable tv and tent, makes me want to go camping with my tent and have either my phone or laptop to watch a movie to full fill one of my childhoods dreams. I full filled one huge one by seeing all 48 states because I was a semi driver over the road and I didn't think it would be possible. I might have to search for this or just get a gen 2 CD and 32X to go with my gen 2 Genesis. I might not have any of the other console's I used to own but I somehow still have my Genesis. That's one thing that hasn't been stolen from me and I am happy to have and this video awakened my love for this setup. I probably wouldn't use the 32X because of the fear of burning up the systems but I wouldn't mind playing a few CD games.

I glanced through the comments and didn't see anyone else mention this, but you can access special stages with any game attached to Sonic and Knuckles. As a kid I plugged in random games to see what would happen. You get to play that 3D sphere game.

Really cool and that was what my system looked like. The older-style Genesis and the Model 1 Sega CD topped off with the 32X. I also had the Power Base Converter but that required me to unplug the 32X.
What is missing is the audio mixer cable that went from the Genesis headphone jack to the back of the Sega CD, the av cable that goes from the genesis to the 32X, and the three large power plugs that required you to either have a big strip box or at least one extension cable. Then you ended with the final AV out and the twin RCA stereo cables to connect to your TV. So yeah, it could be a tangled mess if you weren't careful.
Sonic 3 with Knuckles was the best, because you could play as Super Tails
S3&K was also the intended S3 experience I believe, my understanding is they only made S&K separate because they couldn't fit everything into one cartridge.

No the Genesis put them on the map. The Saturn did ok... but almost killed the company... who we all like to point at Bernie Stolar for not trying to bring more games to the US on the Saturn. The Dreamcast did well for about 3 years 1999 - 2002 before the first Xbox and PS2 came out... and brought Sonic to the 3D realm and many addicted to PSO... but the company just wasn't making enough money overseas.
@Jefferson Maverick yeah I remember the bad jokes of 32x systems crashing, called a doorstop, bad games and lack of 3rd party and bad release that close to the Saturn as they tried to milk the Genesis cow... yet I enjoyed my SCD and 32X for what they are/were. My SCD died... but I think my 32X may still work... I don't remember seeing Saturn commercials at ALL but I remember magazine ads... and Die Hard Game Fan...magazine.
@Jefferson Maverick SCD the gaming... video... things were neat but bad. Night Trap, Sewer Shark... but I enjoyed the version of Dragons Lair! And when they simply used real music with that extry-crisp Genesis look with the slightly larger graphics... was THE way of the system. Hook... wait around on stage ONE... hear the tuba solo from the movie soundtrack! The Star Wars game was game was good. Flink, Sonic CD, Revenge of Bari-arm, Soul(crap), Flashback, Earthworm Jim...(special edition!), Lords of Thunder, LunAr, LunAr EB, Popful Mail, Son of Chuck... and some others were ALL good! Battlecorps was good...tough! But good. Silpheed was supposed to be a Star Fox killer but was a glorified version of Galaga... but I ENJOYED it! Miss seeing your little ship flying through the space battles around you! Despite the reviews... more scenery could hurt you than you realized! Loved the overall look of Silpheed. And had early polygons action going on too! Yeah the 32X was a good idea at the wrong time and came too late, but I really enjoyed the Sega CD! Hate it died. Probably just needs a new fuse inside... but I've been slowly selling my collection.

Had the Sega collection also with the upgraded Golden Axe music... man good stuff... and of all the silly movie games I liked the Sherlock Holmes games... they weren't easy but fun. Still have that guy saying "MONKEY!" In my head ever since...
I really would like the tower to come to the states. It be awesome if Sega could manage to set up an online shop to buy extra carts with a combo pack or list of games you can choose to have them ship to you.

Dude, people have opened up their MegaCD units to find Sega had put a paper insert of the real unit's circuit board and CD drive, with an illustration of a game disc in the tray. I wonder if your NA press kit version had that in it?

It's obviously going to release outside of Japan. One the package says Genesis instead of Mega Drive, and is in english. English packaging isn't uncommon but, It feels fairly safe to assume it's going to be available, if not only through online retailers.
