Seriously?! I've been playing without mixing the audio this whole time! Man the SEGA CD sounds good when you hook it up properly.
this isnt even my final form

@@tl1882 - SEGA Genesis 32x CD model 2 & knuckles
@@hola-gy8te featuring knuckles from the knuckles may cry series NEW KNUCKLES MODE
Have never played on a Sega console, but I love the fact that Genesis has all these attachments. Probably bulky as hell, but it looks so cool!
something worth noticing; the 32x does have additional audio capabilities; that even exceed the genesis; and some games like knuckles chaotix uses them for more complex music
yeah its got a 2 channel pwm chip which passes through the genesis audio from the av input to the av output, some sound drivers use software mixing to make sample channels like chaotix's version of smps which adds 4 pwm sample channels
"And picture this - if it was a Model 1 Genesis, it would've been even more of a spectacular mess."
~The Angry Video Game Nerd, while discussing the Sega 32x
This is literally the best tutorial and should be recommended to anyone!
*Bows* Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had no idea this had nearly 500 Likes, I truly feel honored to be able to help you people.
Indead's Game Room I had to switch set ups a few times in the past few years and this is the go to video I use.
Seriously trying to explain how to set up anything genesis related is like talking rocket science lol there’s no easy way out either.
Again thanks for taking your time making this video.
Yes indeedy, and honestly, Nintendo did the same with the extension port on the bottom of the SNES, their disc based system add-on though, ultimately failed to launch, and they of course wouldn't enter into the digital disc world until 2001 with the Gamecube.
SEGA though was always on the edge of trying to do something new with the console hardware, for better, or for worse.
the best tut so far, very detail, precise and cool audio tut. gonna try that one too about the audio hook up in2 sega cd to stereo slot of the sega genesis . thumbs up bro! :)
even 6 years after you made this video, still greatly relevant and super useful, super sega cd collector myself, so the sega 32x cds are part of that collection it took me 3 years to finally obtain a 32x in a for parts lot and it was said to be not working, but i think they just didn;t know how to hook-it up and neither did i, can't thank you enough
Great video. Thanks for making it. I just got a Sega CD Model 2 and now I'm off to hook it up!
Hope you had some success dude, definitely a neat piece of hardware to play with.
7 years later and this video is great. So happy to see this explained right now. :)
2020 and this is the most useful how-to video on UA-cam. Just bought a gen 1 Sega Genesis, like the one I had as a teen, and bought a 32x to go with it. Plan to get a Sega CD as well. Mostly for aesthetics as the Sega SD can play Sega CD games off a cart.
Now THIS brings me back, because my dad got me basically exactly this setup when I was a kid. Without the spacer, though.
I have genesis Mk1 and Sega cd mk2 like in video , I understood the mechanics of how the audio works but my god it’s literally on life support lol !! Thnx for the tutorial I was using the genesis RF connector and just switched to the composite and was trouble shooting no cd sound and remembered something about the red and white composite cables !!! Thnx a bunch
Is insane that i watched this before getting a SEGA CD and thanks to this i hooked up properly
I have this same setup, except a model 1 Sega CD. Such a cluster of cables for all this. Nice video Brotha!
I'm so glad Steve Snake made Fusion.
This is a perfect visual metaphor. Sega was trying to extend the lifespan of the Genesis. The poor thing looks like it's on life support.
avgn
@@claudio4209 I know.
This video helped me a lot because I just got a Sega CD and when I went to play Sonic CD there was sound but no music
I love how insane this whole set up is, I have a model 1 and 32X, and am trying to find a model 2 sega cd. I will hopefully have this same set up one day soon!
Glad to hear it my man! Best of luck to your endeavors my man, lots of good gaming will be opened up with the full setup, dont' forget the Power Base Converter! ;D
Indead's Game Room He won't need a power base converter if he gets an EverDrive flash cart ;)
I have the same setup but,I have a small woofer which runs four smaller speakers hooked up to the back of it so when i hook up the woofer to the front stereo port on the genesis you get kick ass sound! also running a pair of creative speakers with built in woofers works too!
I really need to get back to this video after I get all this. thanks a ton for breaking it down man. much appreciation
cristian garcia Haha, I'll be waiting for ya' ;) Glad to be of some assistance!
This video was insane and so very helpful. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you so much for posting this. I figured out I was shorted the power adapter all together for the Sega CD. At least I know why my disc isn't working
+Nicole Koza Well, on one hand I'm glad I was able to help you diagnose your problem, on the other hand, I'm sorry to hear that bad news :-\
Hope you can get your hands on a new AC adapter real soon!
Its ok. I found one on Amazon
Thanks for your vídeo, this clarified all my doubts about this devices...
I have model 2 genesis, sega cd 2 and 32x. I bought the 3 in 1 power supply (must have) and a scart converter with retrotink scart to HDMI. I connected my system to my receiver. I have tested it and I use the Sega Cd audio jack outputs over the sega 32x out for sound. There is a higher feedback through the 32X.
Your receiver is almost identical to mine, Yamaha RX-V361 and yours is a RX-V367.
Also note that the polarity on the power adaptors for the Genesis and CD are negative to the tip, opposite to most adaptors (like the 32x one!) which have positive tips. Very important for people buying a power supply, it'd be like putting batteries in backwards!
Great review. Finally got it working!! 5*
Thank you for explaining this so well! Finally got my system set up right!
You're very welcome, glad I could help, it's definitely tricky! :)
good stuff ,,connecting and routing ,to transfer audio n process video .
thanks for showing the 32x the missing link to my set up
When finding a power supply, you can use one that has a higher amperage, but not a lower one. e.g. In this case, you need a power supply that's 1200 Ma or higher. A higher rating won't hurt anything because the system will not draw any more than it needs.
When it comes to voltage, you do need it to be exact.
Even when switched off it's looks amazing 💕
I just got a sega cd m2 along with the power supply and it works just fine. However I looked at the power supply and from what I know it is the same one used for the model 1 genesis. Is this the same one as the actual sega cd power supply? It has the exact model number and it outputs the near same voltage.
So by mixing audio from the headphone jack to CD, i'd loose stereo sound from the same connector. And by the CD's RCA output i could use RCA to 3.5mm adapter to regain that?
I was considering getting RGB scart cable with stereo and those have only 3.5mm for the audio.
Where did you get that gold played link cable for the model 1 Genesis to 32x?
Most CRT TVs, when using their own built-in composite inputs, will automatically double the white plug's sound to both speakers if the red plug is left empty.
Most HDTVs, however, will not.
you can get all audio with an aux cord right ahead of the hearphone Jack, meaning i dont need an aux for the mixing Jack, in model 2 just plug the RCA slot & thats it
Great Video & helpful!
The other important power spec is polarity. Sega CD uses the less-common center-negative polarity. Fortunately, your replacement does too. For some reason Japan continued using that for a while longer after the rest of the world standardized on center-positive but the Genesis 2 and 32X finally got it right.
Master System, Genesis 1, Sega CD 1, and Sega CD 2 will all work with the Genesis 1 MK-1602 power supply or compatible. They all use the standard 5.5x2.1mm plug tip, which is the most common by far.
You will never kill a console by having too few amps but it may not work or be unstable until you give it enough. Most have a lot of overhead for future expansions and accessories (four controllers in a multitap plus a lock-on cartridge with an SVP CPU, for example) so it’s definitely worth trying a 1A center-negative PSU if you have one handy. It’s safe to go over the amperage too since the system will only draw what it needs. The voltage regulator converts excess voltage to heat as it steps 9v down to 5v so a little extra voltage just means a little extra heat through the heat sinks. Even 12v is generally safe, though I’d try to stay below that. NEO PRO-POW3 and TurboGrafx-16 will both work, though TG16 may not work in every possible configuration (low on amps).
im so happy i bought a model 1 some days ago here in my country is a little hard to find
Do you need the original sega av cable or can you use a modern replacement av cable for the sega genesis 1
I recently bought a GENESIS model 1 RGB SCART cable, to hook up my Model 2 SEGA CD audio with a male to male AUX mix cable, probably I can move on to use my RCA to my sound system right?
Well I have a RGB2COMP TRANSCODER, my HDMI upscaler or a SCART to BNC breakout cable for my PVM, so there's audio out so I don't need to take it to the SEGA CD RCA inputs, instead I'm using a short RCA to male AUX cable, a female to female AUX barrel and connect the SCART cable AUX cord there... Pretty cool huh
I had a sega cd model 2 and it works great!
I went on a mission today to get all of these cables and systems and succeeded. Jesus Christmas I just bought all of the cables and power bricks on eBay. Got a model one a my local game store. Got a sega cd and 32x on eBay and got mounting brackets too. About 250$!
I modded my sega gensesis 1 and put video and audio jacks in the back, abd it looks and sounds great, i never had that problem with the sound on sega cd, but then again I know what I’m doing when it goes modding, everyone has there own way of modding
I just bought a Mega CD model 1. It works perfectly but for some reason the status lights on the front are White instead of green and red and also the access light only once in a blue moon lights up? I know it's not suppose to blink constantly but surely it should at some point of loading a CD?
It's not really a big deal but I'd like to fix it, any suggestions?
The sega cd hardware contains its own additional sound synth chip "along with the digital to analog converter for audio from the disk ,, plus it takes the stereo audio output from the headphone jack on the "model 1 genesis" , and mixes it withtogether with the cd sounds giving the system more audio capability's including 8 channel PCM (the sega cd can play digital sound samples in its memory and play them back through this hardware) ,, "only the model 2 genesis can output "stereo sound on the pins from its expansion bus connector so the headphone cord is not needed in this case to pass the genesis internal audio to the sega cd unit sound mixing hardware . the sega cd not only plays sounds off tracks on the disk it can be programed to play back up to 8 channels of sampled sounds on its own.
does that audio problem happen when using a model 2 genesis? Edit: No. model 2 does not need the cable.
Wow I have your exact setup and never used the mixing area on the Sega cd. I might give that a try. Thanks for this VERY informative video. I always thought it sounded normal. Im missing alot hey? So the audio coming from the 32x to tv is not used? Use the audio only from the sega cd? Thanks man.
where do I get that exact power supply for the CD gen2?
also is there any difference between using the model 1 or 2 genesis?
the original power adaptor that came with the sega cd 2 was exactly identical to the one that came with sega genesis 1. I have both and aside from labeling them as such you cannot tell them apart. Also regarding the 32x hook up there are supposed to be 2 metal clips that are supposed to hold the cartridge slot door open and provide power contact between the 32x and genesis. if you examine the cartridge insert section of the 32x you'll notice metal contacts on it that's what the clips holding the cartridge door open are supposed to contact.
Those clips are just RF shielding. They're grounded, but don't provide power anywhere. It's a requirement to pass FCC regulations, plus in theory it could provide a higher quality signal (I doubt they actually do anything noticable)
You can certainly play without them, and most people do, as they've been lost long ago.
You should check out the Sega Trio. It's a 3rd party power adapter that can plug into all 3 units and supply them with proper power. They made them to fit all different models, as well as dual ones that will fit only a genesis and cd/32x.
They also make"Duo" power adapters, if you only want Genesis/CD.
I learned in this video the audio sounds better using the sega cd ports. Sound alot better.
..I'm seriously considering going back to my Genny but the whole ten yards.. without re-watching this (I'd even DL'd it how dope a job ye did), can the 32x alone distribute the audio+visual for the rest?
my question is if you have the Sega CD and genesis hooked up does the audio come out of the Sega CD when playing regular genesis via the mixer cable?
Yes, it does
Which one is the right PSU for the Sega CD Model 2? I've read that Genesis Model 1 would fit but the opposite polarity may fry the system... also on the back says "use the 1602 Genesis AC adaptor only"... fuck... if somebody could help me i'd really appreciate it
I use a Scart cable, just that I don't like how the composite video looks like, I use a scart to component transcoder which it delivers a better picture on my TV, although S-video still recommended bcuz I have model 2 genesis modded, and it's important to know that the composite video it's a sync method for RGB, it's a safe bet :)
0:50 Misconception. AC and DC Adapters do the same exact thing. They convert AC to DC. AC is what comes out of our walls. If you take for example a PAL SNES PSU and use it on a Megadrive model 1 or Genesis model 1 its is totally fine except for the amount of voltage it draws and the amps it draws (i don't exactly know about that as I have never tried it all I know is the connector is the same). Hypothetically IF the SNES did have an adapter that some how converted AC to AC then the Megadrive or Genesis would probably fry nearly instantly. Most electronics have adapters and PSUs to convert AC to DC. Very few electronics use direct AC from the wall. So as long as the ratings of voltage and amps are all matched or close (more importantly the voltage should be the same) then it should be fine.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the polarity could be be different on certain power adapters as some have the positive and negatives inverted. One time I needed to test to see if a model 2 Genesis adapter would work on a SNES so what I did was shove wires (keep in mind I used a broken motherboard that had a bad PPU so the SNES's light turned on I knew it was fine) into the plug of the Genesis adapter and shoved them into the power connector of the SNES and I put the centre pin into the centre pin and when I did this the SNES would not turn on so I inverted it and it worked. (Also if I had kept it on with the negative and positive switched then it would fry after a few moments. I flicked the switch and quickly turned it off so I knew it would be alright)
Could i ask what you did to add the extra bit to the Model 2 Sega CD to make it able to fit the Model 1 Genesis better?
it just slides into place, it doesn't even screw in or anything I think.
Amazing video. well done.
Hey. Just wondering. How does one set up the SEGA CD without a sound system? I'm new to the SEGA CD and need to know how to get sound using just a TV
Super Sonic They’re standard RCA cables, so all you’d have to do is just plug them into the TV instead of a sound system.
I just got an 32x with no cables whatsoever. I m using a model 2 mega drive A-C adapter on the 32x mega drive (i heard that should work because its the same) but i don t have the cross-over cable. However up to this point i don t know if the 32x even works. If i hook it up with A-C adapter and i do the exact same thing as you in the video minus the cross-over cable......would i be able to play a mega drive game on it via the 32x? For now its giving me a black screen. Since the 32x hasn t a red light or something its impossible to see if the thing works. Can you verrify for me?
Goriszoon you can tell if it works (at least partially) by putting the 32x in the genesis by itself, and putting a sega genesis game in the top. If it loads the game alright, it should be okay, unless the 32x unit's output/input ports don't work, but like you said, you don't have any way to test that right now
u haved issues on your sega cd with pirated games?
i have a genesis but no cd or way to give it power or connect it to the tv just got it from my uncle but when i get all the parts im doing this thx btw
where can I find red and white sega cd cables?
Wait what are you plugging the RCA cables into from your Sega CD? You just showed it going in the Sega CD but not what you connected it to.
+Kylmon Jadone In the back of the SEGA CD are the two stereo ports, the White and Red RCA jacks, and otherwise a 'mixing' port which is where you pipe in audio from a model 1 genesis if that's what you're using.
What's the receiver you had at the time
A little editing advice you should have played a little of some gameplay as a closing. Great video though for people that are not audio/video sabby with these units obviously. I'll be looking out for more videos. Great hobby of retro gaming collector I'll tell ya there are some really dedicated collectors out there. LOL Crazy Hobby Addicted People! Cheers!!!
Thanks again for the input man. I'm glad so many people have been able to get some solid use out of these tutorials I've done.
Not true about the power adapter considering they sell an after market adapter that plugs into NES, SNES, and Genesis model 1. I'm using one right now.
I'm sort of glad that I have a Genesis model 2
I actually want to get the Model 2 Sega CD and hook it up with my Model 1 Genesis.
Side note. There exists a custom power brick that has power plugs for all 3 at the same time. Not sure where to find it.
Here: www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-S3-Triple-AC-Power-Adapter-For-Sega-Genesis-Model-1-Sega-CD-32X-FAST-SHIP/163526128983?hash=item2612eab557:g:kA8AAOSwQc9ad3xe
1 question, if you wanna play a sega genesis game you have to unplug the sega 32x or you can put the cartridge directly?
No sir, you just insert he cartridge directly, no need to remove the 32x, in fact, because you're playing it through a 32x the video quality is actually going to come out much cleaner due to the 32X, for whatever reason the video out of most genesis models is actually really poor for composite. My 32X makes a night and day difference with my Genesis. My genesis has noticeable vertical bars that are off color and what they call "rainbow banding" where many colors appear with vertical streaks in them as well. This is completely eliminated when I hook in my 32X.
Wow those are pretty good news for me I will have the buy one! but now days are very rare to find, I remember 5 years ago were comun and cheap now is the opposite. Thanks for the great explanation
Why not Scart RGB?
Very helpful thanks
There is a 3 way power supply out there it one adapter 3 wires recommended.
Setting up the SEGA Genesis 32x CD felt like building a Lego lol
32x have it's own audio hardware, so you're wrong.
For games like Knuckles Chaotix it's very, very noticeable if you gather audio from audio jack on Genesis only or if you get audio from 32x.
thanks.. i was able to connect my 32x to the genesis
Excellent! I'm very glad this video helped you out, and hopefully you learned a thing or two as wel! =D
So all audio will run from the Sega CD? Even with the 32x connected to it?
So the 32x itself doesn't make any sound it uses the Genesis's onboard audio chip to generate the audio, so if you have a model 1 you have to pipe that audio out of the headphone jack in the front directly to the TV/Receiver or through the Sega CD with the 3.5mm jack, also know as a regular AUX cable in this modern era, and then to the TV/Receiver with the White/Red stereo jacks.
If you're attaching the 32x to the Model 2 sega genesis however all you need to do is hook up the 32x A/V In and then use the regular A/V Output on the back of the 32x still. In that instance the Model 2 just passes the audio out to the TV through the 32x.
Cool thanks. I use the headphone jack (model 1) to output stereo to my TV. I've heard of the headphone out to Sega CD mixing input. Hopefully my Sega CD will show up in the mail next week. Just curious because I'm interested in the 32x, I used to play Star Wars Arcade a lot. Even Web of Fire when it sold for $5.
can someone explain to me what cables I need to hook up a Genesis model 1 to a CD model 2? His whole audio explanation didnt help me out.
+Andrew Bacon You need a Mega CD power supply, 3.5mm to 35mm headphone cable (A.K.A Mixing Cable) and Stereo RCA to Stereo Audio Jacks. This is the method in this video:
1) Remove the two expansion port covers on the right side of your Mega Drive unit.
2) Into the expansion port, plugin your Mega CD add-on unit with the 60pin adapter built in on the unit.
3) Insert the power supply for Mega CD in, said, Mega CD.
4) Insert one side the "Mixing Cable" in the 3.5mm headphone jack at the front of the Mega Drive unit. Then insert the opposite end of the "Mixing Cable" in the 3.5mm headphone jack at the back of the Mega CD add-on unit.
5) Insert the the Stereo RCA to Stereo RCA input in to the Mega CD add-on unit. Then take the opposite end of the Stereo RCA to Stereo RCA cables into your Composite Audio input in your RCA Audio Source, in my case, a television.
6) Insert your video cable into your said television.
DONE!!!
Awesome video thanks!@
Do we need the sega cd in order to play the 32x?
You do not need a SEGA CD to play the 32X, although there are a very small handful of games 32X games that were sold as a 32X CD set that take advantage of the SEGA CD and require it, but only those games REQUIRE the SEGA CD for the 32X.
Indead's Game Room All of the 32X CD games were also released as separate CD games. The 32X would improve the video and audio significantly. Far smoother than the CD on it's own. So if you want to play Night Trap, Corpse Killer, or any other of 4(?) FMV CD games in higher quality, you need to get the 32X CD releases.
really dumb question, how did you turn the cd on?
Power switch on the Genesis. Press reset to eject the tray on a model 1.
After 26 years , I'll be able to enjoy the stereo sound on m'y big system 🤣🤣
The adapter has (.-)+ and that`s not standard, that`s why you should not put a other adapter in your device
hey guy you can use an ac adapter theres countless ones made for the genesis 1, 2 and 3
Why does your mega drive have a vga port on the back?
Haha, I believe its actually some kind of serial port, that would be super kickass however ;) Finally get some decent visual fidelity out of the thing!
This monstrosity is so complicated even for adults, let alone for kids back in the 90s..
the sega mega drive/ genesis looks like its on life support lol
My life is fucked up and I am idiot but THIS CLUSTERFUCK OF CONNECTING IS THE REASON WHY I LOVE THIS SEGA GENESIS/SEGA MEGA DRIVE+SEGA CD/MEGA CD+SEGA 32X CONNECTION CRAP.
the only thing i can appreciate from rf adaptors is that its only one cable. no aux cord going from genesis to cd, no 2 seperate composite cables from 32x and cd, just the av cable from a 32x and an rf adaptor. picture quality sucks but less wires
Could I use this video in a production? please.
What did you have in mind?
It's just a video about the worst consoles, but do not worry, I gave you credit for that. I send you a private message to avoid spamming.
Someone made some magic cable for you alone ? How does that help anyone?
AVGN put it best: "It looks like it's on life support!"
lol what a mess! =) Watching it in 2020 =/ Great video by the way!
The ac power supply just doesn't work it won't fry...been there done that
I gave up on the video on the 32x set up part,
damn, what a project, you really gotta admire Sega's creativity, instead of making a new console they would add on the old one to make it better, imagine if companies did that today, instead of getting a PS4, Sony makes an attachment for the PS3, to increase its Visual output to make it look better. Sega really was ahead of their time, too bad that damn lack of a DVD player in the dreamcast made it the final console
the dvd was going to be an add-on u stick on the bottom of the unit thought the modem port.
well i can only imagine by the time they planned on it, it was already over
