The Mafia is famous for some it's more creative forms of punishment and torture, and today we're looking at one you may have seen in a cartoon as a kid, but did they really do that? the man who was washed up in brooklyn actually washed up off the shore of the kingsborough community college campus. i was taking classes there at the time and heard it was someone from a nearby nursing home who discovered him. it was very shocking to hear that something like that happened so close by, and i’m glad i’m not the one who discovered it bc i honestly would’ve been traumatized.

The part that everyone is forgetting is that concrete is an exothermic reaction, meaning it releases heat as it cures, up to 160 F. So while you are waiting there your feet are being baked slowly for those 4 hours.
Ouch. That makes it even worse.
Add that to the fact that you'll feel a horrible pressure on your ears as you descent into the water and it really is torture.

I'm surprised this wasnt mentioned. But depending on how deep they bring you out the more painful... simply because of the air pressure not being equal as your going down so you would feel extreme pain in your ears until you go deaf then eventually drown...

i almost drowned when i was 9 years old. my cousin pushed me in a 12 foot pool thinking i could swim, keep in mind it was also during the winter that he decided to play this cruel joke on me, i can honestly say that it is NOT a peaceful way to die, the experience is absolutely terrifying, you try to breathe but you literally cannot, it feels like your lungs just don’t want to expand anymore all the while just looking up and staring at the bright sky while you wait for your seemingly inevitable end with the thoughts of impending doom rushing over you. i became so traumatized by the experience that it took me 7 years after the fact to finally learn how to swim. to this day i still get super anxious when putting my face under water in the shower.

As an italian there are a lot of ways to make suffer the victim. There is the "incaprettamento" which is something very cruel. Your hands get tied behind your back until your neck, very strong. When your hands start to have pain, you try to "move" your hands to have some relief, the problem is that more you move, more you are strangling yourself until the death
Concrete generates a lot of heat while curing, wouldn’t that cause skin burns? Not to mention the unbearable pressure against your skin causing immense pain. I think cement shoes means weighted down to sink, not actual cement shoes.

And concrete is also corrosive (don’t remember whether acidic or alkaline but the bottom line effect is the same) which just makes it even worse.
Far more common to just chain concrete building blocks to the ankles. But let's not ruin the mystique, eh?
Robert Stallard you would have to mess with carrying the blocks and fiddling around with the chains. Far easier to knock the guy out, tie him up and give him the proper concrete shoes.

I am a diver, and I'm very dissapointed that it isn't mentioned that before you die you probably experience horrible pressure on your ears.
Divers usually go down gradually and clear their ears regularly. I don't know if this method is actually enough to burst your eardrums, but it'll hurt a great deal I'm sure.

For me, drowning was peaceful once the initial shock passed, I just sort of floated under the surface, as everything started to fade to black, I felt peaceful. Then I woke up to having someone performing CPR on me.

I live in NY and often wonder what’s buried under roads and stadiums.
I’m not research certain, but confident in saying that loads of construction companies would have had mafia connections and probably actual body counts for having buried people or victims in cement and structures.

I must add, there's a case with Peter Martinez where he washed up on shore with his feet encased in concrete but it's noted that he died to asphyxiation from the duct tape on his face, not from drowning.

Ok so just for knowledge I work on concrete daily at my job. Concrete wont sleep through shoes unless they are loosely tied or not tied at all. Trust me I've had enough concrete on my work boots to know that. Also concrete is actually very high on base side of ph scale. (I misspoke and said very acidic at first needed to correct it.) when wet. On bare skin it can actually tear your hands up after a long time of working with it. (Source: I work on concrete daily and one of the older guys who has done it for almost 50 years hands are like sand paper from when he was young and didnt wear gloves or anything when working on it.)

Actually from what I've heard, waiting for the concrete to dry would take too long. What they would do is tie a bag of dry concrete too your legs and throw you off. Hence the Mac the Knife's lyric, "a cement bag's dropping down".
You're kidding right? What would be the purpose in tying a bag of dry concrete to them? They are being thrown in the water it wouldn't cure let alone do anything other than leak out of the bag.

It doesn't dry. It CURES. I bring it up, not for the sake of semantics, but because it swells and heats up to over 150F. Not to mention the chemical burns.
You probably wouldn't survive the curing process. The pain alone would send you into shock.

There was a case here in the Philippines before involving a woman encased in a barrel full of concrete. I believe they only found the body because one of the involved told the location. But incasing the feet with concrete is also probably done in our country before as well.

Needless to say: the family friend moved shortly after learning this.
Back in 90s slovakia Big mob boss Mikulaš Černák, you can look him up he is locked up for life since 1997. He had lion as a pet and used to feed bodies to him and intimidate people with him.

Honestly I imagine it wouldnt be that difficult to force cement shoes. Chaining some extremely heavy weights that they had access to in those times could have worked. And they probably wouldnt have needed to have stone blocks over their feet. Just fill the shoes with cement themselves while legs weighed. Im sure mobs could easily find ways. But then again, maybe not.

Great video. From what I have read, the mob would drug the victim heavily while the concrete was hardening so they would not thrash around. Simply tieing something heavy to someone's feet was easier and less time consuming than actually using concrete shoes.
