Keelhauling Pirate Torture - Worst Punishments in the History of Mankind
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2020
- Back during the ancient world and the Middle Ages the ship represented the pinnacle of the military. The ship was a sacred thing, and as time went by it was those who ruled the waves that became the most powerful nations. But during The Age of Discovery when ships were discovering new worlds and crossing vast oceans, life was tough for sailors. The Age of Discovery was also an era of mutiny. When an aggrieved crew turned against their captain all h e l l could break loose and there was nowhere to hide. That’s why some particularly horrifying punishments were reserved for out-of-control sailors. Welcome to Keelhauling.

Walking the plank is terrifying the more I think about it, I've heard that sometimes they would chum the water bringing sharks and others fish around before they kicked you off the boat, even then if you weren't attacked and eaten you'd eventual drown due to exhaustion
I think thats equally as terrifying as these others. Imagine just walking not knowing when your next step will be on the wood or deep in the water
Unless you're a US Marine

I think the Death Wheel was the worst. Also, as you might expect, practiced by the Dutch. The condemned was strapped to a table and the executioner would slowly and methodically (so the condemned didn't lose consciousness) pulverize the bones starting with feet and fingers and work his way towards the ribs. The limp body was then stretched and tied around the circumference of a wagon wheel with an axle attached, and the unattached end of the axle was then placed into the ground with the wheel and prisoner left to spin in the air. This was the ultimate fate of the skipper of the Batavia if memory serves, which followed what is perhaps the most gruesome case of mutiny and psychopathy in the Age of Exploration.
Yikes! 😟
It's called a Breaking Wheel and victims were said to have been broken on the wheel. No table involved. No spinning either. Just bone crushing and intertwining the broken limbs between the spokes.
Make someone the "Govenor" of the island. That's a cruel sense of humor
The example of the keel hauling of (I think it was) Black Beard on the Starz show, Black Sails, absolutely brings the horror of this punishment to life.....yeesh 😳😬😵
I heard there was a "milder" form of this where they would tie the person to the bow of the ship, sometimes above wave level (they would have to deal with the cold salt spray and wind) or sometimes at wave level (where they would constantly have to watch there breathing and get pounded by the waves) and would leave them there, sometimes for days. I'm not sure if it was a punishment or an interrogation technique or both.
Saw this on The Last Kingdom. Mever knew ot was a real thing
Also, this now means that the SpongeBob episode “Clams” has arguably the darkest line in the entirety of Pre-Movie SpongeBob, as after SpongeBob accidentally throws Mr. Krabs’ one millionth dollar in the water, Mr. Krabs threatens SpingeBob to “reel it in before I keelhaul you.”
I never knew what that really meant until now.
Idk if my mind is playing tricks on me or not but I remember krabs saying this a lot in several episodes
@@Snaps12345 He probably did. I just vividly remember him saying it specifically in the episode Clams.

@@Acetelyne Hi! I'm guessing you found out because of my account image. You know, as much as I love Buckethead I really wish that he would start playing more of his other songs live instead of just playing his most famous and well-knwon songs.
For example I really wish that he would play songs off of albums such as:
A Real Diamond In The Rough (My Personal Favorite)
Shadows Between The Sky
Rainy Days
Rise Of The Blue Lotus
Monument Valley
And MANY MANY more, but I don't feel like writing out the entire list. But I think you get the point: he has so many more songs that he could play other than Soothsayer, Nottingham Lace, Jordan, etc.

I remember seeing keel hauling in the show Black Sails and man was it difficult to watch.
If you want to know a bit more about kielhalen(the dutch term) there is a movie scene that maybe can give more information about it. but this "treatment" was indeed most common in the Dutch navy but that is mainly because of its small size of the land area especially in comparison to its neighbours and its own navy. The movie is called Nova Zembla. this is about the discovery about the island called Nova Zembla what is now a part of Russia. This is a crewsom but interesting story with almost anything that can go wrong will go the wrong situation.
The show “Black Sails” depicted Black Beard being Keelhauled in gruesome detail, look it up, I’m sure it’s on YT.
@Torture Killah2 he was shredded by the end, you sure you saw that Episode
There was a depiction of this on the show Black sails.

Ive read that navies actually did keelhauling far more often then Pirates. Yeah pirates could be monstrously cruel (or they could be just a bunch of freed slaves and deserters) but its hard to keep a band of criminals together if you doll out the worst punishment too often.
From my understanding keelhauling was reserved for punishments that might deserve death (or just being stranded on an island.... also a death sentence) but not quite that bad. Stealing from other crewmates might get you keelhauled. The others can't trust you anymore and don't want you around, but its probably not enough to execute a man over. Therefore keelhaul the offender and either he shouldn't do it again or die from the process and nobody needs to worry about the offender anymore.
Don’t even hit me with that we all know the worst is getting eaten alive by a rat, from the inside out. Anything slow really is the worst
I think flaying is worse

I swear The Infographic Show is underrated
There certainly seemed to be a lot of chefs on board those ship back in the day.
The ships sometimes were in areas of no winds and would sit in the doldrums for a long time. They would sometimes have to eat the horses which later on became sacrificing the horses and the calm latitudes are now often known as the horse latitudes.
GO NAVY ! Thanks. Love ya !!! Philadelphia USA
Awesome’how-to’ video!! 😂
Am i the only one wondering how they get the rope from one side to another, passing under the ship?
Heard the term keelhauling several times and had no idea what it actually was until I saw it on an episode of “Black Sails”. The underwater shots of it were pretty crazy!

What would it be like to go blind for a week

Blind people: (sits on toilet)

@Evilpimp that'd not true that's a fat myth

I'm visually impaired and have been temporarily blind a few times. Hopefully I can shed some light on this. When you go blind (as an older kid or adult anyway), your other senses aren't really enhanced but your brain definitely works harder to extract what information it can out of what it has left to work with, it helps that it is not devoting so much energy and cognition towards visual processing but it can be mentally taxing (try watching a highly compressed video, with enough mental effort you can fill in most of the gaps but you will tire faster than watching the same video in HD). The one exception to this maybe if you are blind or visually impaired for a prolonged period at a very young age, your brain (and other parts of your nervous system) may "wire up" a little differently making your perception of other senses more streamlined (the young nervous system is amazingly adaptive). I spent the first few months of my life essentially blind and deaf but even now my sense of touch in my fingertips is well outside the normal range. Whether my early experiences are the reason for this or it's just a random genetic mutation I can't really say.
J Plata they still have a tongue

My family used to have a boat, and I once bumped my foot against it below the water line. Barnacles took a chunk out of my flesh. They're razor sharp.
Thanks for the explanations. Keelhauling was a phrase we have all heard of, but never actually fully understood what was involved.

Read "Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe" if you want to learn about some of the other macabre punishments for going against ship rules back in those times..an incredible book all around.
cool video :)
Anybody gonna explain how the rope even made it under the ship to get to the other side in the first place?
Finally... I've been searching this question for a while now... I need an answer too
I DIDN'T THINK OF THIS
Throw the rope ahead of the ship and then just sail over it.
They trained a fish to swim under the ship and then they gave the fish a rope and made it swim to the other side.
The most commonly used fish were Grouper and Tuna due to their large size and ability to hold a rope with a large diameter
