Finally the Caucasus gets a little due attention
150 likes and no reply? I'll fix that
Thanks man
?
I mean, it's too easy to get lost in which Bagrat, Constantine or David to we're referring to throughout its history to really stick in John Q. Public's mind.
Alright, Armenia is next probably. After that, maybe Caucasian Albania, Circassian and the monarchies of the northern Caucasus, such as those of the Chechens, Avars, Lezgians, Laks, Kumyks, Kalmyks, etc…
Ancient Georgia then known as Colchis to the Greeks is where Jason went to find the Golden Fleece which was protected by a huge dragon and he fell in love with the sorceress/princess Medea. The "golden fleece" thing is quite interesting as even nowadays in Georgia prospectors use a sheep skin to pan for alluvial gold in the rivers and the fleece becomes "golden" because of the small particles of gold trapped in it.
Golden fleece was a manual written in gold letters how to artificially produce and multiply gold and silver and precious metals, it was an Alchemical manual and whoever had this wisdom was considered to be chosen nation.
The Danish statue does not depict king Gorm the Old, but Ogier the Dane (Holger Danske).
I blame Google :)
Old viking monarch guys all look the the same 😅

A member of this family was a General of the Russian Imperial Army during the Napoleonic Wars he was Prince Pyotr Ivanovich Bagration he was one of Napoleon’s most dangerous opponents during the Russian campaign.
He’s also one of the real life historical figures mentioned in “War and Peace” and in his case he was also included as a secondary character. He died of wounds he sustained during the Battle of Borodino, which is covered substantially in the novel. (The battle was a Pyrrhic victory for the French, as the battle had weakened both sides so much that the Russians allowed the French to take Moscow. The Russians then set much of the city aflame to keep Napoleon’s army from plundering the city for supplies. With a lack of food and other supplies for the French deep in enemy territory, Napoleon left Moscow only a month after capturing it and it began a long French retreat that was exasperated by the harsh winter weather in the region, for which the French army was ill-prepared.)
He would've been a great Georgian general if georgia didn't went to shithole because of ottoman empire and persia
That Alexander must've wanted to imitate Charlemagne with how bad his succession plan was.
Many in the medieval ages have. Way too many.
In the end, Charlemagne's Succession plans didn't matter when all but one of his legitimate sons had died... and that was an attempt to follow Frankish custom, as when one ruler died, the realm would be divided by all surviving sons, rather than just the Eldest inheriting it all... which I think was one of the dumbest ways Succession could work, if Norway or Russia weren't example enough...

You mentioned this is one of the last major royal dynasties missing from the channel. I would like to see you also cover in the future:
- Belgian Kings
- Armenian Kings
- Grand-Dukes of Luxembourg
- Bulgarian Empire
- Kingdom of Greece (modern)
- Hunnic Empire
- Kingdom of Kongo
- Songhai Empire
- Ghana Empire
- Maurya Empire
- Kingdom of Cambodia (both modern and Khmer Empire)
- Majapahit Empire
- Srivijaya Empire
- Sultanate of Brunei
- Tui tonga Empire
- Xiongnu Empire
- Tibetan Empire
- Mamluk Sultanate
- Gokturks
- Sultanate of Oman
Agreed. What's the address upon definition of a "major dynasty"?
One of the things I appreciate about Georgia is how much the medieval history is still widely known and celebrated, even as the country still lives in the 21st century and builds a forward-facing future for itself.
Thank you usefulcharts for reading my comment and doing video about georgian familly tree. You really deserve more than you have already by this point.☺️

Probably the best known modern-day member of the Georgian royal family was Prince Guéorgui Vassilievitch Matchabelli (1885-1935). A native of Tiflis, in 1921, he and his Italian-born wife settled in the United States. In 1926, they established the Prince Matchabelli Perfume Company. The prince, an amateur chemist, blended the company's perfumes. Among its best known brands was Wind Song (later heavily advertised on television). Other favorites were Ave Maria and Princess Norina. All the perfumes came in crown-shaped bottles.
that’s cool. are they still in operation?
@@august8696 Yes, they are. Bought and sold many times, Prince Matchabelli Perfume is now owned by Parfums de Coeur, Ltd. Windsong is still a top-selling perfume.

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!! I love Georgian history and especially the Bagrationi
საქართველო! Love my Kartvelians in the United States
love how i always learn something new seeing usefulcharts videos
Byzantines didn't really put Ashot I as the king, for around 150 years Georgia had dynastic wars going on and the Bagrationi dynasty came out victorious, the only involvement from the Byzantines was some support of different candidates and the title of "Curopalates" that they gave out, during this time there was no King of Georgia, but there were Georgian Kings, that's how we call the period between 500s to 700s
To explain as shortly as possible, between 300 BC and 600s Georgia was divided into 2 kingdoms, the Kingdom of Colchis (Later Lazica) in the West and the Kingdom of Iberia in the East and South, there were a few Georgian dynasties that ruled these regions and they had very close relations, every time any outsider was attacking both Colchis and Iberia would unite, after around late 400s to early 500s Chosroid dynasty of Iberia got split and so did the Kingdom of Iberia's territory as Iberia itself in East Georgia, and Tao-Klarjeti region in the South. After that, Georgia was always divided into these 3 parts with significant nobilities ruling these regions, even during the Kingdom of Georgia. At the end of the 500s the ruler of Tao-Klarjeti and younger brother to the ruler of Iberia Guaram I was the man who is considered in Georgia as the founding father of the Bagrationi dynasty, he started the "game of thrones" and the battle between royal dynasties and just noble dynasties, both Anchabadze and Bagrationi dynasties were born from these dynastic wars. The Chosroid dynasty died in the process of these dynastic wars, but it transformed into the Bagrationi dynasty, and after that, the video explains everything correctly.
I just explain this because of one particular reason, some propaganda machine from one of today's empires that wants to tear Georgia apart tries to make it seem that Anchabadze weren't Georgians, they were influenced by the Byzantines way more than the Iberians, but they were Georgians, every proof that there exists including manuscripts, including churches and writings on them all are in Georgian, and from every century, from the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, especially from the 10th to the 12th centuries as during the "Golden Age" churches were built everywhere. This is important to mention for certain reasons.
Also, Hearclius didn't leave any battles, Russia abandoned their own plans, it was the Russians that broke the Treaty of Georgievsk and multiple times, I don't know where did you get that info from, I have read Catherine's letter to her general in Georgia from Russian archives, how they decide to break the agreement, where did you get info that Heraclius broke it? That's a huge false information.

I don't care about religion.
I don't care about monarchy.
Yet, I here watching this video because I love the charts, how they are made and the story telling. 😅
You _should_ care about religion and monarchies, since humans are, on the whole, hierarchical and superstitious.
Personally i think the kings of kartli and the kings of iberia shoulve been the same color bcuz apparently the region called kartli was historically known as iberia.
Fun fact, Pyotr Bagrationi fough against Napoleon in Austerlitz and Niko Bagrationi from the mukhrani branch fought in the second boer war.
Niko Bagrationi even captured Winston Churchill

Glad you covered Georgia as well
Didn't even know that about the Georgian's. I would've thought it was the Russians or English to be the oldest. But, well, well, well🚬🧐
I guess it should be stated the definition of Dynasty at the beginning of the video. If we mean an unbroken line of succession in which each new element is linked to the previous by being their relative, 814 is not old enough to make it "the oldest Christian Dynasty". Robertians->Capetingians->Bourbons have an unbroken and documented line of father-son links which started before 800.
A royal dynasty starts with the first person in a noble house to become a king and continues so long as there is at least one male-only line descendant that is still living. Even if we go with the first Robertian instead of the first Capetian, we'd have to start with Odo, who became King of France in 888.
Another amazing video
As a georgian thank u❤
For anyone wondering, the Gruzinsky branch of the family used to have a male heir in the personage of Nugzar’s 4th cousin, Yevgeny Petrovich Bragation-Gruzinsky. But he passed away in 2018 without any children so this branch of the dynasty is out of male dynasts except for Nugzar himself.
Also apparently the marriage of his eldest daughter Ana to the heir of the Mukhrani branch was a huge deal because it courted the involvement of Georgian monarchists, the government and the Georgian Orthodox Church, namely those in support of the marriage because it would unify the 2 branches and those in opposition because any children they have would have a nigh-indisputable claim to the throne. It seems that will be a reality though as Ana and her now ex-husband David have their son Giorgi.
The idea of a constitutional monarchy in Georgia is absolutely not popular and causes nothing but ridicule and irritation. This is mainly due to the fact that the Bagrationi, having failed to preserve the independence of the country, then became officials of the Russian Empire. So, this project is nothing more than a backward whim of the Orthodox Church.
As for David and Anna, they were practically forced to marry and have a child. And the reason was only the whim of the Orthodox Church. Then they divorced. The child is raised in the church. You can guess how inadequate he will grow up. This is just crazy in the 21st century.
@@TillEulenspiegel. I’ll take polling data over your word. Which currently and always will mean nothing to me, just as you mean nothing to me
@@Edmonton-of2ec You can believe whatever you want, including mythical polls. But I know the mood in my country. In all elections, the monarchists have no ratings, and the Orthodox Church is slowly but surely losing its authority. After the death of the current patriarch Ilia II, nothing will remain of this rating. All this will act as a head shot for the idea of restoring the monarchy.
How perfect. I was reading upon Georgian politics, when I saw that the current president advocated for a constitutional monarchy in 2008 with reinstating the Bagrationi dynasty. I was about to check if you uploaded a video about the Georgian monarch and well, you perfectly uploaded it 4 days ago :D
Let's see what you say.

Interesting...gonna read more about those. Maybe you could consider adding little maps in your videos ? Like Kingdoms splitting up, getting conquered, change size, create alliances etc. Would make those videos perfect in my eyes.
About time the Iberians got some attention
Who else thinks the channel should cover the Siam family tree?
Carlos Drummond de Andrade, a Brazilian poet, wrote a poem in 1930 titled "elegy to the King of Siam"
Got to admit, this is a region/country I never gave much thought to...
Exactly. We know where most of the attention goes🌝🍿
Great video!
The House Bagration is now also part of the Imperial House of Russia since Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna's mother, a Bagration princess, married Grand Ducke Vladimir of Russia. This makes the current House Romanov the most senior of all royal houses in Europe and Middle East dynasties via the maternal line.
Most of the Romanov family members do not accept the claims of Kirillovichi (Vladimir and Maria) to be the rightful heirs to the dynasty.
That's crazy, considering that MY DNA is present in all generations from the same woman.😂
The Y chromosome is sometimes debatable. Therefore, it seems more sensible to do matrilineally than patriliniear, imo.
I have been waiting for this since Matt mentioned it in the video of who would be the Russian emperor
Glad you did it thank you Matt you did a good job with video it’s very interesting of all the Georgian kingdom went through
Very good vid, nearest '(male-line) longveity' competitor might be the Irish O'NEILL clan descended from legendary,semi-historical Niall 'of the 9 Hostages' (c.370-411) ;I hope you get around to discussing them and their major extant branches.👌👍

Good video!
If we go by Wikipedia, the Georgian royals after Rev II and Aspacures II can trace their lineages back to at least the 2nd century BCE, where they decend from the Gens Julii through Marcus Antonius!
Georgian history and culture are fascinating. I have loved Tamar from the start.
This was very informative. How about a chart on the Armenian royal family?
Good ole georgia

Okay but why did the devil go down there
Who's the devil?
Fascinating!
I kid you not, this is *the* video I was expecting the most to see on this channel. The House of Bagrationi has as much potential as any other European royal dynasty.
I think it could have been covered in more detail. Also the union of the two main branches despite their (ongoing) rivalry, and the fact that the Georgian monarchy is one of the closest to being restored. If prince Giorgi is raised right and his parents are wise enough in dealing with the succession issue, we may see a towering figure of Georgian history later this century.
We must not forget that prince Giorgi has older half siblings. He actually is the 3rd child of Princess Anna.
The idea of a constitutional monarchy in Georgia is absolutely not popular and causes nothing but ridicule and irritation. This is mainly due to the fact that the Bagrationi, having failed to save the independence of the country, then became officials of the Russian Empire. So this project is nothing more than a backward whim of the Orthodox Church.
As for David and Anna, they were practically forced to get married and have a child. And the reason was only the whim of the Orthodox Church. Then they divorced. The child is brought up in the church in an extremely backward and pro-Russian environment in all respects. Parents don't decide anything. You can guess how inadequate he will grow up. This is just crazy in the 21st century.
amazing history thank you
That area in the World throughout History was a Fulcrum between all corners of the World. Which if you’ve ever played a 4X Game, does not fair well for it. All kinds of fascinating things get mixed together there. But it’s always someone’s next Conquest. If you think about it, virtually every large Nation or Empire, either popped up like wild fire then collapsed, or slow burned in some sort of Geographical and Economic Stronghold. You hold the Choke Point.
I spoke to a member of the georgian Bagrationi dinasty, head of the kakheti branch, he makes instagram posts on heraldry
Lady Ashley's a famed socialite and showgirl's fifth and last husband was Prince Dimitri a Georgian royal.
wait did the channel profile picture changed when?
Well, I'd love to have this chart!!
Fun fact: Maria Vladimirovna was married to Franz Wilhelm, the grandson of Prince Joachim of Prussia, who was actually briefly considered as a candidate for the Georgian throne in WW1. This makes their son George Mikhailovich the descendant of a proposed King of Georgia, the Romanovs who ruled over Georgia, and the Georgian kings.
I've just recently got married in Tbilisi, I wish I had that video before then, so I could know a bit more of Georgian History before coming there.
Loved Tbilisi ❤
The Battle of Martqopi (1625). 27,000 out of 30,000 Iranian soldiers were put to the sword. The Georgian Army attained a crushing victory against the army of Shah Abbas I.
Georgia did not break the giorgevsky tractat first. That is a lie and liable
Despite King Heraclius II of Georgia's efforts to maintain his country's commitments and not break any agreements, the Russian Kingdom did not provide the expected support during his conflict with the Ottomans. Instead, Russia stood by as Heraclius II and the Georgian army faced the Ottoman forces alone. This situation underscores the complex and often fraught relationship between Georgia and Russia, which has been characterized by a series of conflicts and political maneuverings over the years.
This is what I was actually looking for.
Can you provide a link to the source of the Erekle II's betrayal?
Game of thrones is really about Georgia and it's many tribes and kingdoms fighting over each other, if you payed close attention, in season 4 I believe there is a scene where John Snow is showing the queen the paintings on the wall about first men and how they united against the white walkers, you see Georgian national symbol (Borjgali) right next to the first men, also later in series night king sends message to end the world as they knew it, he draws Georgian symbol on the wall with decapitated hands and impales someone in the middle as they set it on fire, British iberians have roots from Georgia and writings of George Martin is a little reminder of that.
I’m curious about the green and yellow branches that are talked briefly about at the end of the video. What are the histories of the Mukhraneli and Imeretinsky branches, and how/when did they diverge from the purple/Gruzinsky branch?
I’m leavinggggg
On that midnight train to Georgia!
The new red background for the logo is very royal, fitting for the channel. Could it have a deeper meaning?
Funnily enough, I was exploring the visigothic dynasties and kings in CK3 and the very first king (of the Iberian Visigoths, Alaric I)'s father was Georgian. He died in Constantinople, and Alaric I, his son, migrated to Iberia. That fact took me on a wild spiral on Wikipedia.
Mmmm... I can smell the European Royal Family Tree - North/East chart remake coming.
Use of BCE and AD in one time line is unusual
When Bagrat V was eventually caught alongside his family and a few noble families, he pretended to accept Islam (even though Christianity doesn`t recognize such "fake" conversion) and asked Timur to give him an army to convert Georgia to Islam; Timur took his words for it and gave Bagrat V a 12,000 men strong army. Bagrat V secretly got in touch with his son George VII, lured the Timurid army into an ambush and slaughtered all of them. This act of defiance made Timur incandescent with rage. In the following years, between 1386-1403, Timur raded Georgia eight times.
Hooray!
What about Ethiopia. They could be one of the oldest christian Monarchies. I do not know about long their dynasties lasted.
You're right, they became Christian in I think the 4th century and continued until. the mid-20th century.
But their royal dynasty can only be traced back to around 1200.
The kushites of the upper nile were also early christians and defeated by multiple attacks by muslims wiped then out during the middle ages. The muslim rulers of egypt did not want them linking up with crusaders is one reason. And Arabs raiders came in from across the red sea.

Maria Romanov claims she is the heir of the family but she is not the most senior heir, those are the grandchildren of Andrei Alexandrovich Romanov, the nephew of Czar Nicolas of Russia.

Almost none left. All were killed either by russians or by turks. The remaining were russified during soviet times. bagratunis are the exception, and even they used to go under russified surnames for some time.
I remember the Syuni dynasti still living in USA. But that will literally make their family the oldest in the world, so i don't know about that. Another major one are Mamikonyan, bit it is also not clear.

The first Christian King was Armenian. Tiridates the Great (298 - 330) was converted to Christianity in 301.
Sadly, his dynasty is no longer exists, while the cowardish Bagratuni ran to georgia and live even today, hating Armenia, hating their own roots. Pathetic.
