Hey there -- just wanted to let you know that I used a short clip from your wonderful video, 10 seconds or so, in my video "Who Invented the Firefly?" I have duly credited you and placed a link to your video in the description. Thanks so much for making this available!
Soooo bats produce an ultrasonic sound (and dolphins) that trave until they bounce off other species? And it gets sent back to the bat/dolphin? How do people figure this stuff out.
So cool. I remember watching a documentory on bats about 40 years ago-possibly/probably on Nova--and this took me right back there. Thanks for posting.
I hear this exact sound outside my window sometimes. However if echolocation is supposed to be inaudible then why can I hear it as loud as shit? I genuinely thought my guinea pig had had a fright or was going into labour as this is the exact sound they make…
You’re right, most bat sounds are at too high of a pitch for our ears to hear. I’ve slowed this down, which drops the frequency so we can hear it. But there are some bats that echolocate at lower frequencies, so it’s quite possible me that’s what you’re hearing out your window.
I just noticed bats actually use their tails to catch flying prey!
It's actually their feet that they catch it with, but does look that way.
It depends on the species, some use their tail, others can directly catch them with their mouth, or even their wings. They are really fascinating!
ball with wings

I agree with Sam Chen
huh thought bats just fly into their food with mouth open. Suppose this makes more sense
“They think I hide in the shadows… but I am the shadows”

So Beautiful x
Hey that's good audio what kind of micphone did you use ?
I just thought of this creature hybrid
Insectibat
Insect and bat hybrid. Nocturnal and has an insatiable appetite for juicy red fruits.
We used to catch them as kids probably a terrrible idea but they will chase fishing line . Amazing we never got rabies , or did we ? 😊

We can hear some of the frequencies, especially if you don't have damaged hearing and are young. But your grandma likely won't hear a thing.
