Despite the expansive number of ecological benefits that bats bring to Mexico, their populations are continually declining. How do you think the misperceptions of bats can be changed for the better?
All bats and their roosts should be protected by law. damage for death or injury of a bat should be considered a criminal offense.
Share information with children. One thing that dispelled my fear of bats was summer school, where we learned about those benefits and their habits. Kids scare easily. Get involved with education in local areas where bats are accessible (if possible). And share with the urban folk who are the source of decline. They really need to hear it most. Good luck.
Wildlife education with focus on less-well represented and endangered species should be part of the curriculum in any school system anywhere in the world.
Educating people of the benefits of bats and separating facts and fiction. The truth about bats. The more good things people know about bats the better things will get. Right??
Covid-19...
Nah but serisously, I feel like it was a WARNING shot to say leave US be. We share this planet together and it is in our interest to LOVE and look after one and ALL.
So, bats are the bees of Mexico? Got it. Very cool. I never succumbed to the “bats are evil creatures” cultural miscalculation. I always figured that they were misunderstood. However, I never would have guessed that they were such a large part of maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Fascinating stuff!!!
Exactly! Bats play a vital role in both the wildlife ecosystem and Mexico's industries, such as with agave.
Bats are so amazing. They are so important and deserve to be protected!
We agree, Luz! Bats are sometimes referred to as "indicator species" because changes to bat populations can indicate changes in aspects of biodiversity.
This didn't age well
After covid
@@shujaauddin Bats are not to be eaten, how u gonna blame bats for that lol smh
All this while thinking bats are menaces. Did not know how important they are to the local biodiversity until I watched this. I'm impressed that the mezcal maker has taken up the initiative to setup a bat friendly plantation. Thank National Geographic for sharing.
That one girl's eyes sparkled when she saw the circle of bats
Stephen Stern The latina? Yeah she's freaky. Im turned on hunny💓💦👅
She can get it
Thanks Philip Defranco
I've always been a bat lover. They rock!!
Bats can be found almost anywhere in the world except the polar regions and extreme deserts.
Thank you, National Geographic!
Quite a few commenters clicked on Philip Defranco's secret link of the day to get here. *What a treat, a very educational video & I wouldn't have seen it otherwise* personally I haven't watched many documentaries on television since my grandfather passed but I'm always willing to support documentary films
I am glad that people help bats.
These bats are gorgeous.
These women are gorgeous.
This might be my favorite video on UA-cam.
Ditto'd
WOW didn't realize how bats are important to the ecosystem. Now my eyes are completely different perception of the bats. I'm glad that the Mexicans are trying to help them. because I feel so sad that the baby bats were all dead. Because they didn't have no food. All animals need to be preserved and protected especially when it's for the ecosystem the living environments.
Alexandra Roca's eyes are on another level of beautiful like WOW
I like the woman who shares her Agava plants with bats.
OMG, I've always been terrified with bats since I was a lil girl. Because a few of them attacked me.
But now that I'm starting to watch this footage I'm seeing a different side to them. And actually....they look kinda cute.
Bats dont attack people.
This video deserves more views, well done
I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you.
Mexico shows the world once again.....
I don't find bats scary. I love to watch them after dark, they hunt around the street lights.
@jaxtraw no mate maybe they're looking for insects as insects fly near lights light or dark it hardly matters to bats as they use echolocation
@@nishiketubhayakar5870 That's likely. Hunters go where prey is.
Bats are amazing!
Thx. ✌&💜
Ms Micheal ye but carnivourous bats and all 4 million of them going out all at the same time... Thats more then enough to kill a grown human
raptorgod77 - Wow, That would send me running, for sure, lol!
✌&💜

We need bat houses
Check out Bat Conservation International or BCI. They sell bat houses. They need to be mounted securely at 15' to 20' up in the air on a house, barn or post that is clear of trees or wires for best results.
Always educational and facinating. Stories like this are why I love NatGeo.❤
Bats are cool
Shoutout Phil DeFranco!
Batman will surely help us to communicate with bats I think...
Not enough bat documentaries!
Yes I always liked bats since childhood always felt great to know abt them that they're pest controllers, pollinators they shld hv also spoken abt vampire bats as they're feared to be evil but they're not

Bats also pollinate pineapples in Hawaii
I like the part where the guy lasso's the tree
Bat guano also controls Hanta virus development
Where's Brucey now?
These great, important and helpful animals need our help in a big way because of deforestation, their living spaces being destroyed and being evicted out of people's homes. If you are interested in helping these awesome creatures Bat Conservation International can help. They make and sell bat houses of various sizes and designs. They also have a ton of information on setting up your bat house for success. If you don't like insects including mosquitoes a BCI bat house can help you highly.
👍🦇❤️

Why say Mexican words and names with European pronunciation.....? Girl, it’s Mezcal not Methcal, Graciela not Grathiela. Those are names.... those don’t change
Sheesh. Because she has a Spanish accent and that's how Spaniards pronounce the /s/ sound.
