Quick Tip: Is It OK to Store Magazines Loaded?

  • The debate has raged, probably since the invention of the first detachable box magazine. Can you store a loaded magazine for long period of time? Or will the spring fail and lose its ability to feed reliably? Brownells Firearm Support Tech Caleb Savant weighs in. Modern high-quality tempered magazine springs will take a bit of a set, Caleb says, but after that they can sit loaded for a VERY long time before they fail. Springs wear out more from use - many repeated compression/expansion cycles - than from being stored compressed. In fact, loaded mags have sat for many DECADES, and then fed just fine when used! Caution: You get what you pay for; cheaply made mags may have cheap, poorly tempered springs, and they may fail after long-term loaded storage.

Good Tip. I am by profession a Metallurgical Engineer. There are various grades of steel produced. Mild grade steel is a soft steel used for extreme deformation as in stamping. The steels used in the springs are called what else... Spring Steels. These are high carbon grade steels that when heat treated, are quenched to create fine morphology which can have bainite and pearlite. The microstructure of the steel will not transform into another structure as long as the steel is not subjected to temperatures exceeding 1200 F. And yes, if you buy inferior grade steel not processed properly, the spring steel may not retain their original dimensions.

And for those who can't use facts, but have to have experience, I have all of Dad's guns with original mags that have been loaded since 1950 and all are as good as new. Now I'm going to probably sound stupid for saying this but in airsoft (I own both airsoft and actual firearms) the mags used are also a spring based system, actually airsoft goes out to replicate weapons very close to the actual thing just smaller projectiles, and no gun powder, still all metal and gas operation. I bring this up because they practice the opposite standard because apparently it wears out the springs and then they dont feed properly because the mag springs are the only thing they haven't made quality and remains cheap garbage, however this makes me thank God that we actually have quality magazines that can stay loaded and prepared, I couldnt image if my weapon didnt fire or jammed all because the magazine was left loaded for 3 months. Thank God for quality springs

If you could make a video on learning how to learn if something corresponds to what you already believe to be correct before you learn it, that would be a great help. Many years ago, sitting in a metallurgy 101 class, we were looking at the stress/strain graph of some alloy. Starting from unstressed metal you go through the elastic range, within which the metal will return to its original shape when unstressed. Then you reach the elastic limit, beyond which the metal will not return to its original shape. The professor commented at that point that with repeated stress, the elastic limit will drop. So you can't stress it as much and expect it to return to its original shape. As it turns out, pretty much the only use I have ever had for that information is with magazines. I never fully load a magazine and if I'm going to leave it loaded for an indefinite time, I never go over 80% capacity. I have no idea whether this is necessary or not, but I have 18 year old magazines that I've kept loaded and used more times than I can remember and I've never had a problem with them. So my point would be in an emergency, a partially loaded magazine is going to be a lot more useful than an empty one.

    • @c1arkj
      @c1arkj 2 роки тому +1

I just fired a13 round .45 ACP mag I had loaded for 15 years. Every shot perfect, no issues. Even did a rapid fire test of 5 rounds. There may be some spring tension weakening, but it's not significant enough to keep the mag from working. So I've decided it's just better to keep my mags fully loaded and ready when I need them most.

Right. Even if it was detrimental mags are cheap. If wearing out from load were the case I'd just replace/rebuild my mags every couple years at the same time I replace all the batteries in my red-dots, but that's not reality, you just replace them if/when they go bad, but that's more likely to be from physical damage than from the spring wearing out.
If we want to perpetuate the car analogies, it would be like jacking up the car every night by the frame to save the suspension instead of just letting it do what it was designed to do (support the weight of a car) and replacing it when it goes bad.

Then there was a downpour. The lightning was enough to make a grown man cry. And then it happened..... The vessel overturned, and all the guns and ammo I have ever owned went into the sea. We were able to get onto a lifeboat and escape with our lives.

he's right the springs are weakened when they are used loading and firing, worked. Just loaded isn't putting stress on them... steel is weakened when worked. Bend a piece of metal back and forth and it breaks eventually. Keeping tension on them doesn't weakened them. The molecules in the steel are tempered, strengthened. Heat treated... Steel can be brittle before that.

Minute of Man accuracy at 100 yards may seem acceptable until you consider that if you are fighting anyone with a modicum of training or self-preservation who knows you are there, you probably won't see more than his head and part of his shoulder at 100 yards... and most people's heads aren't that big. This would have been fine for Ivan back in the day, since he had an entire squad and a BMP-2 backing him up. You probably don't have more than one other shooter and you definitely don't have a BMP-2 with a 14.5mm machine gun on it.

It had the sales slip in the box which showed he had purchased the pistol and a box of ammo. The box of ammo was there, missing 9 rounds, and there were 9 rounds in the mag. He had never fired it. I lubed it and took it to the range, and every round fed and fired. This was in the mid '90's, so it had been loaded more than 40 years before.

The springs won't wear, but the feed lips on any polymer mag can spread apart. Keep the dust covers on.

*Fair warning to the community:* If you are using a placard (such as the HSP D3CRM in my case) that uses plastic inserts for magazine retention, and you leave it [the chest rig] set up with loaded mags then you will _absolutely_ lose all magazine retention. All of your mags will simply fall out with ease.
HSP replaced my original inserts for free the first time but said I would be charged from here on out if I don't follow their instructions. Which, by the way, the rig does not come with any instructions nor should it because it's a chest rig. It's pretty straight forward or so I thought.
So I attempted to return the product but they refused to refund my money. Claiming that I "misused" their product. Such asinine garbage. How does one "misuse" a chest rig?
When I called them out for shady marketing and manufacturing an inferior product. Meaning they knowingly produced a part or product that was designed to break which in turn, forces the customer to continually buy/replace those failing parts.
I was then told by Travis and his team and I quote, "Don't leave your chest rig loaded with loaded magazines." WTF is the point of having a chest rig set to go and mounted on your plate carrier if you're not supposed to keep it ready with loaded mags?!
Again this is just fair warning to the 2A community. I'd hate for someone to get hurt because of some company's greed or lack of credibility.
      Stay safe my friends.

@@BertShackleford Thanks for the heads up. Now the question is, when is HSP going to release tempered steel mag retention inserts or some equivalent that will endure the test of time for us modern minutemen.

I'm glad he brought up cheap mags, cuz ya those will take a huge set and weaken faster.. I agree tho, a good magazine can stay loaded.

Working for a police dept. back in the '80s I did a magazine spring test on Remington M870s, both the standard length 4 round and the 7 round extended magazine. We left 10 of each loaded for 2 years. We measured the spring length at the beginning and again after we function fired them. All the springs took a little bit of a set, but the shotguns functioned flawlessly.
In another case, I took my Pop's M1911 and 3 loaded magazines to work to function fire, clean and inspect them, and reload with fresh ammo. Those magazines I'm sure had been loaded for 20+ years. The pistol, magazines and ammo functioned flawlessly. Though I don't recommend it, stored properly this stuff will last almost forever. Guns & ammo, like people should get out and exercise once in a while :)
I'm not worried about storing magazines fully loaded.

Paul Harrel talked about in a video how when he was still in the military his unit was issued low quality 3rd party magazines for their issued handguns and they never lasted more than a year without a problem, often far less. Fortunately the fix was easy. Remove the base plate, remove the spring, stretch it out a little, put it back together. Good mags can go a long time but even bad mags you can make work again if it's just a matter of spring compression. One idea is to put numbers or letters on your mags and if one gives you trouble write that down somewhere you won't lose it. If that same mag gives you recurring trouble despite quick fixes like a spring stretch than it's worth getting rid of and buying something better.

I'd advise against some AR mags being kept loaded. That's only because I've had issues with the tops of the mags getting warped just enough to cause feeding issues. Granted, I'm about 90% sure it's because their lower end mags but something to keep in mind with plastic mags.

    • @royjohnson465

Yes the top feed lips also damage under pressure. Try Lancer magazines for better quality.
