The blue haired guy is a perfect example of the Dunning Kruger effect. People who believe they are incredible at something often tend to have a lot of gaps in their knowledge and are worse than they think. This is because they have enough surface information to feel like they know a lot, but there is still so much that they don’t know that they don’t know, that they are worse than they think. Also the flip side of this exists where people who are really talented tend to under estimate their skill.
She dodged a bullet. He needs to get his ego in check before getting into another relationship.

Absolutely. I've dealt with that a bit for every skill that I've learned, though over the years I think I've learned to temper it a bit. Usually if I start to feel confident at a skill, I remember to tell myself that it's only because I don't know shit about it yet. For any of the skills that I'm alright at, I'm generally very aware of how much I don't know

As a drummer I can tell you that 5 was a pretty good spot for him. He played a basic beat with basic fills. But he seems like a super nice guy.
He was locked in though. It certainly wouldn't have hurt if he displayed an ability to play more complex and fluid grooves, but I think a 5 is a little low for him.
@@GavriJ I'm not a guitarist, but I would give the the multiinstrumentalist guy some credit for the Fleetwood Mac piece. Not the easiest thing to play, I think. He seemed to play that well based on the clip we saw here. I think LingLing gave him a lot of shit for his multiinstrumentalist attitude and overconfidence, but I think I could rank him above the drummer. Would have to see the full video to be sure, though.
He also rushed a lot. Being a drummer without solid time, is not good.
I feel the drummer was really flashy, basic grooves but people see him going crazy and think "wow he's gotta be good"

The Chopin piece that the guy chose it's either above his skill level or in a very early stage of practice to be performed in public. I would rather play something "easier" but beautifully and accurately.

Yeah the fantasie impromptu he was playing was pretty unpolished and his technique wasn’t that good. But he wasn’t that bad.
I think it also has to do with him playing on an electric keyboard? The touch and how you control your fingers on the keyboard may be different from playing on a classical piano.
@@nanopopquiz7460 not really. Also that particular keyboard is fairly high quality with weighted keys and everything. The keys might feel plastic but it wouldn’t change how you play.

You don't have to be a musician to see how infuriatingly stupid this is (I should know; I'm not one). To take Eddie's analogy further, this would be like if you got a basketball player, a tennis player, and a golfer together and then asked a group of mostly baseball and soccer fans which person is the best sportsman. And then each participant was given ten seconds to demonstrate their skills. And then when ranking each other they say things like "well I really like the color of your shirt so you're first." Madness.
But it does make for a fun and interesting Twoset review video at least!

And still it would have been an exercise in futility because what is good in any form of art is purely a matter of opinion, a personal aesthetic. _Music is a communication, not a competition._ It is however true that to a degree we can rate proficiency and precision. If that's all it is to some, I have to point out that a machine can only imitate art, not create art. Yet we can build machines to do things faster and more precise.

As soon as someone says something like that, you instantly know they don't know much about music. I have tried to talk to a few that have made those kinds of comments and have never been able to figure out what they think it means.

She's a singer who can only kind of play guitar though so she probably isn't too worried about time signiatures and that's why she got that so wrong
I feel bad for the fact that they gave the pianist an Electro. The keys on those instruments are often different feeling, so I feel as though the way the pianists adapted to playing on a piano that’s not even full (88 keys) and feels weird is very impressive
and since keyboard-keys are usually plastic it makes a unintentional thud sound when you press on them which distracts from the music in my opinion.
The force feedback are really important in fantaisie for the muscle memorie etc

But specialist is harder to get a job. And in music, making a song requires knowledge of many instruments combined. You’ll not likely to make a good song with one classical instrument.
To be fair, having a good and caring gp can make such a huge difference in your life though and is someone you will hopefully have to call on a lot more often than a specialist, so I'm not sure this comparison is entirely accurate. Even though money wise yeah he's right.

Personally, I think they should have had much more refined musicians to rank. All were quite "ordinary" (as am I). Mastery of any instrument is no easy task and that's why you have to practice 40 hours a day.
They literally played basics lol. I don't think any of them actually know music theory aside from the drummer boy because he was clearly in time.
I doubt the drummer knew any theory. My father was a drummer so I could keep time with a metronome loooong before I ever knew what a quaver was. I see ranking people as easier when it's a lot of beginners though. Intermediate vs intermediate would have assumedly cause more non-musician listeners to not pick up on the subtleties of the players individual musicianship. Granted, it would have been a lot more fun for us TwoSet viewers!!

Guitarist here. i cant talk on his cello playing, but the multi instrument guy actually played that initial song quite well. the song, “never going back again” is difficult because it requires travis picking along with consistent bar chords. its easy to bag on him but he actually played a pretty difficult song
I play guitar as well and totally agree! He just didn't need to bring that cello.

For me, if you play a simple piece beautifully, I will give you more props than if you play a difficult piece poorly. People are trying to show off the wrong things, and it is coming through loud and clear. Everyone here is trying to demonstrate their technical mastery of 'difficult' material, but that's not what music is really about. The girl with the purple hair was the best for me, and I was impressed by the drummer, but everyone else left me completely underwhelmed. I really don't like the vocal affectation of both singers, it is so contrived and anonymous sounding, every modern singer does that same thing they're both doing.

I got so annoyed when Summer was ranked 5 by Instagram followers. I’m a pianist and I personally think she played so well. I loved the piece she played and her dynamics/expressions were very good

As a non musician she was my favourite. I think she did what music is supposed to do: makes us feel emotions. Personally I found her as the most consistent in her playing and was pronouncing all the notes just right. Idk maybe some of the words I'm using are wrong but that's how I felt. It looked like she knew what she was doing.
She was by far the most talented person in the video! By a landslide.
I had to learn this when I was younger. Still remember when I used to learn a bunch of prog songs as a kid, was playing them in a group with no one really paying attention. And then some guy walks up and plays 3 chord jack johnson and everyone is mega impressed. I had to learn the simple fact that most people who listen to and consume "music" are not actual musicians. Asking their opinion on music would be like asking for medical advice from a 10 year old.

To expect every person on earth to understand the nuances of every single craft out there, and therefore to appreciate only the most talented or genius creations is ridiculous.

2-5 is pretty subjective, but I think 1 and 6 are pretty justifiable locks. It would have been more interesting if they had done this as a blind test, as I think looks definitely come into play when people are voting on something like this, which might be fine for AGT, but not for a "rate the talent" scenario.

i think its more difficult for a pianist to learn another instrument than the opposite since the piano is the most straightfoward *innitially* and most musicians know that as a second one if they arent mainly a pianist

Summer was extremely underrated, as piano player I can confirm she was loads better than that messed up blurry 1 phrase fantasie impromptu. She played the arpeggios expressively, had rubato and dynamics.

I am admittedly a wannabe Ling Ling (but am far from that) and knew as soon as the Jubilee and Twobilee videos dropped that TwoSet would like react and have been on the edge of my seat waiting for the video. I love TwoSet and have been subscribed for years :) I grew up playing classical piano (ages 7-17) but never majored in music / didn’t go to conservatory and got my BA in Legal Studies with a Music Minor from UC Berkeley. Worked at a law firm for a while before deciding to pursue music and am now a studio/touring keys player, composer, and arranger for a variety of artists. I also have a super small, relatively new band that’s a fusion of classical crossover and prog / math rock called GRP. Would love to hear your thoughts on our songs “Storm”, “Willow Tree”, and “At Dusk” (all on Spotify / iTunes etc.) :)

And the vibe seems familiar too. I feel like your playing sounds very ethereal in a really nice way. Maybe that's a weird way of describing it but that's how I feel. The 5/4 in Willow Tree added to that feeling I think.

And haha yay! Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to GRP! Yes, so GRP is a duo-drummer Jessica Burdeaux and myself on keys/piano. Our process goes something like this: I write a piece on piano and then record it; I send it to her and she writes a drum parts to it and we convene and discuss; then she officially records drums and then I compose any other additional instrumentation for the track and then hire session musicians to record those parts before mixing/mastering and releasing :)
Honestly 5/4 and 5/8 are my favorite time signatures (so much so that I’m getting a tattoo of one of them soon lmfao, I’m weird). I love writing in mixed and odd meters which all of the GRP songs have. “Storm” is in 12/8 in the beginning and then transitions to three bars of 6/8 and a bar of 2/8 which repeats before the B section which is in 4/4 …the main theme of “At Dusk” is (3 bars of 5/4 and then a bar of 6/4) repeated… the main theme of “Willow Tree” is (3 bars of 5/4 and 1 bar of 4/4) repeated and then transitions into a B section that’s in 6/4 and then the ending is in 7/8. Hope that all makes sense lol :)

I noticed that "Willow Tree" didn't stay in 5/4. First the 5/4 caught me offguard and then I started counting and it didn't work and I was like "Wait, what?". And then I was in a comfortable 6/4 all of a sudden and had to go to the beginning to check if it really was 5/4 at the beginning to not make a fool of myself when mentioning the 5/4,
A drummer also seems like the perfect duo partner for you hahaha
One thing I love when improvising is to put the 2 or 9 in every chord I play hahaha. Especially major. I just love the sound of a B in A major or a D in C major. It sounds so fresh, shiny and bright. And I love the flat 6 in a major key cause it sounds so colorful and nostalgic :')
That video seemed to illustrate why pop music is so marketable. It’s all about how you make the audience “feel”, rather than showing the audience what is “the best”.
I think "feeling" is the whole point of music. HOWEVER, the shitty thing about pop music is that it takes the laziest route toward the emotional goal. Beautifully made music is nuanced, and intentional and complex
@@marygraham1709 will say it once and I’ll say it again after taking multiple theory classes and learning how to produce a lot actually goes into pop music. There’s so many unique patterns and Melodie’s I’ve heard in songs in the genre and yes maybe it isn’t the most technical, but tbh I’d rather hear something actually memorable than a septuplet arpeggio run in c harmonic minor and not to mention the fact more goes into actually making a pop song and producing it with all the layers of different instruments and contrasting melodic lines than most other genres
@@marygraham1709 there are plenty of pop music that all of those things and that are deeper beyond the frilly light beats. Every genre has it's good & bad songs, every genre has it pros & cons. If a simple, non-complex song makes some ppl feel happy and maybe wanna dance, well then that's music.

As a fellow pianist and singer who listens to many genres and was also classically trained.
1. Pianist girl with her own composition: Amazing composition, great skill and fluidity when playing. Her technique was sound and it was a very moving piece that I can hear has inspirations from great musicians.
2. The girl that sang: Sang a very difficult song, my mind by yebba(Recommend everyone to listen to it). Good vocal control + nice runs .
3. Drummer: Really good rhythm, dynamics and expression
4.Piano dude: Not bad. Bad technique, never lifts his leg from the pedal so everything overlaps. Props for trying a super difficult song.
5. Multi-instrumentalist: Cello playing was awful. Guitar was ok. Recommend focusing on one instrument and being great at it before learning other instruments.
6. Blue-hair dude: Singing was pitchy, trying to cry while singing doesn't work and actually ruins your voice so don't recommend doing it. There was literally no patterns in the chord progression at all. Songwriting was the only good thing about it. I suggest practicing to sing more and actually learn to play piano. Lastly, get your ego in check though probably you have it in check after these ratings.
Kudos to @TwoSetViolin for this amazing video.
P.S I don't think any platform should ask musicians to rate themselves because we as musicians always judge ourselves to get better in the first place. So its just weird and could mess someone up
100% agree, although I think the multi-instrumentalist deserves a bit more credit. You said he should focus on one instrument before moving on, but to me his performance of "Never Going Back Again" by Fleetwood Mac was incredibly clear and showed no signs of fumbled notes (this is coming from a guitarist who also knows that song). Also Two-Set cut it out of this video, but he did sing with his guitar and I found it very nice with clear and controlled pitch. I find singing while playing a fingerstyle guitar song incredibly difficult (depending on the song) as there are many rhythms you have to keep track of (thumb vs index middle ring fingers vs singing). His cello playing I have no say over because I have never learnt cello, but admittedly it didn't sound great.

I feel like people were mainly impressed by chopin not just because they know it's hard but because it's obviously fast. In reality the piece summer played had plenty of arpeggios that require a lot of movement too, and she nailed it, but non-musicians don't really recognize that

Also the fact he played litterally 10 seconds (obviously very bad played) and not the whole piece, it just mean so much. This piece is pretty easy when you understood how it works rythmically, but you are right people think it’s impressive because it’s fast. That’s why it’s pointless to ask non musician people to rank skills they don’t know anything about.

Guitar capos aren't really meant to be a training wheels kinda thing, it's just to raise the pitch in a way that makes the fingering more suited for the guitar in different keys. Classical guitarists use it for some renaissance and baroque lute music, flamenco players rarely play without one, etc. Just a really useful tool for raising pitch.
Yeah, their immediate dismissal of the capo was a pretty telltale sign they're not guitar players... or really know anyone who is. A quality capo is an essential tool for any guitarist.

This! I feel like people are way too quick to judge guitarists for using any sort of tool in their playing and assume the guitarist is somehow less talented. I see this a lot for effects pedals (especially distortion) and I think it come from a misunderstanding of how these things are used and work. For example, people will say someone is covering up their mistakes using distortion, but in practice distortion is more likely to heighten your mistakes. (And for clarification, this isn't saying that guitarists who use effects are more talented. It's just to point out that effects don't replace talent, they just put more tools in the box.)

my rankings coming from a musician:
1. Piano girl. Her compositions had lots of very nice colors and i honestly really enjoyed it. she seemed very grounded when she played. i also heard some parts that screamed debussy which i always love.
2. Guitar girl. As someone who has sung before i can vouch that having enough control for those runs is NOT easy. Overall very good
3. Drummer. Pretty solid time, he was going kind of ham on the ride, but i enjoyed it. good dynamics as well.
4. piano guy (kind of tied with drummer) Lots of respect for playing that piece especially with people there, not easy. I do agree the runs did feel a bit muddy and maybe weren’t executed perfectly, but otherwise i enjoyed it and i do think it would sound a lot better on a real piano.
5. Cello and guitar guy. First off i don’t like how he deducted points for someone not playing more than one instrument. talent is not defined by how many instruments you play. I did enjoy his guitar, but i think his cello playing needs work.
6. blue hair. It was quite simple, and maybe he does need practice. His voice sounded decent for the most part. i would’ve had more respect for him if he wasn’t as arrogant as he was. Anyway thank you for listening
As an amateur musician I agree with most of what you are saying but I would have drummer as 4, he did most basic stuff, also too much ride. Piano guy as 3, when I saw this on Jubilee I went to his channel and he can play he was just nervous.

I think the difficult thing about the video is that talent isn’t exactly the same thing as skill. Whereas skill is somewhat measurable, talent is a little more abstract. Sure, it can manifest into skill, but it’s also the nuance of understanding a subject and potential a person can reach with dedication and practice. All that to say, IG robbed Summer of the higher ranking she should’ve had in the context of this group
Hey Twoset, as a guitarist I need to correct you on the capo thing. Yes, us classical guitarists don't use it as much as electric or acoustic guitarists do. But capo for classical guitar exists too. Just as an example, I'm practicing Bach BWV 997, which is in C minor but transcribed in A minor. I bought, as suggested from my teacher a capo that was designed specifically for classical guitar in order to play it in the original key. Check out David Russell, he's one of the greatest guitarists and he actually played it with a capo. Hope you see it and it doesn't get lost in the wave of comments
Was going to say this. Capo doesn’t make the instrument any easier or harder to play, just puts you in a different key or range.

The capo is possibly the most misunderstood tool in the guitarist's toolbox. Beginners use it to make their lives easier in some cases, sure, but as a more advanced payer, there are certain figures and tone colors you just can't play without one.
Yeah I play classical guitar too and I’ll add that we’ll usually just play in the transposed key anyway. That Bach piece you mentioned is written in C- but it’s key isn’t so much important as it’s written harmonies cause instruments throughout history and geography have vastly varied tunings. Like take Toccata and Fugue. It’s written for D- but church organs were all tuned differently back then so it’ll always be pitched differently organ to organ.
Also unrelated but it’s interesting to play different transcriptions of the same piece. Like Moonlight sonata is in C#- and the most popular transcription is in A- but there’s also a version in D- which has the melody an octave lower which gives it a total different vibe. It’s also in drop D

I put piano man at 2 because I feel like he’s in the beginning stages of practicing that piece, but he still showed good skill and understanding. The vocalist was some raw talent, but I put her at 4 simply because I feel like some vocal coaching would make a great deal of improvement which is the only reason I put the drummer at 3. Interchangeable to me though.

It me :) I knew it was a risk playing only original compositions (and I didn’t tel people until after the ranking that I’d composed my pieces) because I know people often mistake recognizability with “talent” and “likability”, but I went into this expecting a sh*tshow and it’s basically what I got.

Hard to measure talent. The only thing you can rank them on is technical proficiency really, and Summer is the clear number 1. Blue hair guy... there's definitely some Dunning Kruger effect there ha. Hey Lucas, Thank you :) Agreed 100% re: talent. Why did I participate? I’m clearly masochistic, lmao. TBH, I didn’t think I’d get cast when I put my name in the hat, so was v shocked when I got the casting confirmation. Mostly, I was curious to see who would show up (was honestly expecting there’d be some top tier musicians… was half expecting to know someone there-I did not-since the music world can be quite small in many ways), I love making myself a lil uncomfortable every day if possible (I’m weird), and also had hope that maybe TwoSet would react to the video (called it, LOL) or that some music directors would watch it and find out about me who didn’t know about me before so I could get more gigs :)
FYI there was no monetary compensation for our participation. I did it mostly out of curiosity and self-loathing lmao… and also bc I semi-know three people who have been on Jubilee videos (internet acquaintances) and found their experiences to be interesting and generally positive (Alec who won the musician dating pt. 1 video Jubilee did, Ray who was ranked #1 in ranking strangers intelligence who I found out went to my high school, and Jason Chu who was in some spectrum episode about rappers). I didn’t have work scheduled the for day of the shoot, so figured “Why not lose a little self respect?” Lololol jk

I personally think the Multi-Instrumentalist guy was underrated. The first thing he played on guitar was a song by Fleetwood Mac called “Never Going Back Again” and it is an incredibly difficult finger picking song. It might not appear difficult, but it’s pretty tricky. Paul David’s, a great guitar UA-camr, talks about how difficult it is as a finger picking song.
I think if he was less lousy on cello , or just didn’t play it and didn’t make the comments about good musicians being able to play different instruments he would have come across better.

Ok, so I looked the song up, as well as Paul David's video about it, and I tried the song myself, since as a guitar player I wanted to see what the fuss was about.
First of all - the fingerpicking part of the song is not difficult if you've been playing the guitar seriously for any amount of time. Take literally any Tommy Emmanuel song that he plays using Travis picking and it's way more difficult. Or check out Buster B. Jones's "Buster B Boogie", now that's difficult fingerpicking. I'm not even talking about the right hand technique you need to play classical guitar music, no comparison there.
I will grant, however, that the song is hard on the left hand, especially if you overpress on the bar chords. However I only tried it on a classical guitar, which has a wider neck than a standard acoustic, so it's probably easier on the acoustic.
But the most important thing in this argument in my opinion, is that if you listen carefully, the dude in the video didn't even play the first 5 bars of the song correctly. The "trickiest" part of the song is to keep the bass going with your thumb, while simultaneously playing the melody. He is literally not doing it. In the first 4 bars he only plays the first and the third bass notes with his thumb, and, while hard to see/hear exactly, he seems to either be playing the second and fourth bass notes with his "i" finger, or not playing them at all. Makes no difference to be honest, because you should be playing them with your thumb and they must be clearly heard above the melody. All 4 bass notes per bar.
And the final bar in the video, the fifth bar, which Paul David, for example, calls out as the the trickiest part for the right hand, well, the guy in the video doesn't play it correctly at all. He is literally not playing the bass notes that make that particular bar tricky. If you slow down the video at 3:21 to 0.25 speed you can see exactly what he plays and how he plays it - wrong rhythm in the bass and not all notes are played.
I wouldn't normally care as everyone makes mistakes when playing live, god knows myself included, but you can't really praise a guy for playing a mildly tricky song, when he is not playing/simplifying the actual tricky parts.

And I agree with your ranking. Those in the top three have that 'professional' vibe and we can totally see it just by the way they carry themselves and when they're actually on their instrument.
As a drummer I can only comment on a few things. His drumming for me was a 6/10. He played quite in time, he had dynamics but they were not very good (extremely big gaps between the louder and softer parts). Maybe the gaps were just bigger because of how the video was cut, but for me that was the biggest problem in his playing. Then he also had some issues with his technique (not consistent rim shots, volume was not always quite right on snaredrum, he did not always hit the cymbal the same way which could also be the fact that the drums weren't positionned very well). That's all the nitpicking I could do :) thanks for listening to my ted talk
As a non-drummer, this was such an interesting and informative comment. So interesting to learn about some of the skills and nuances involved in playing other instruments and I don't often hear this level of detail with drums.
I'm glad to see another drummer and your comments here! I think a lot of musicians would say that measuring a drummer against these other pitched instrumentalists is maybe unfair but I disagree. All your comments about consistency (arguably the most important thing for a drummer) and dynamics and such were spot on. I think its kinda funny how impressed they were (by the drummer) because they actually opened my eyes to a lot of things I hadn't noticed about the others. like Sedo choosing a tough piece, and actually they changed my mind about Mary, I didn't like her that much but her vocal runs were quite impressive tbf.
He also looks like he’s holding a TON of tension in his playing - some loosening up could help.

Chad Smith is a great example of loud playing whilst being very good at keeping articulation betweens different "notes" and hearing accents…and everything else.
The fact that multi instrumentalist took on "Never going back again" on guitar hasn't been picked up on widely. That's one of the toughest fingerpicking guitar pieces out there, and in the few seconds played on this video he did well

This is definitely true, “never going back” is really hard to play. I don’t think he played it as well as most covers I’ve heard, but at least he could play it. His cello was horrendous though and how he tried to use that as a way to look more talented rubbed me the wrong way. He should’ve focus that energy on making “never going back” sound better

Classical Guitarist here, it's definitely true that capos can be used as a crutch (because they allow you to shift the basic open chord shapes into any key without needing to learn voicings for them higher up), but it's definitely not the case that that's all they are. They let you effectively raise the tuning of the open strings which can be pretty useful for playing in keys that aren't super guitar friendly. Also, there's a specific sound to those open chord voicings that's basically ubiquitous to pop/rock guitar music, you wouldn't use jazz voicings just because they're technically the same chord, right?
Some guitarists definitely do look down on you for using them but I think they themselves probably lack the understanding of the instrument they think they do lol

It’s really interesting to see how „impressive” drums are. As a drummer myself I thought that his playing was really basic and the other ones (especially purple shirt girl) were much better but at the end it’s all about the show and how well can you sell your instrument
Interesting. I agree with you about selling here. And I think drummer sold himself well by playing within his abilities as opposed to piano boy or cellist who chose pieces way above their calibre. Again, this itself is also a display of sound musicianship.
He kept it clean, seemed to have good technique, and was somewhat musically interesting. Imo, he deserves third place behind Piano Girl and the singer. Blue hair..well, he did what he did. Multi-instrumentalist had poor tone (hard to get on the cello, but necessary). And Piano Guy seems like he can play, it's just that he chose an ill prepared piece. Choosing a piece that you'll sound good on is half the battle.
I don't have any chops so his drumming is better than mine 😅 I can pretty much just keep a groove and keep it together but nothing fancy
Honestly the drummer to me it looked like he was just hammering on the ride I’m surprised no one went deaf. He kept time but overall very basic playing aside from that fast fill. It sounded like he drank 5 energy drinks, either he was too nervous or just needs more practice

It's not because he played a hard piece. It's because he freaking played a piece from "LaLa Land." People go with what they're familiar with and that's why it's so important to choose the right song when you're auditioning.
Purple outfit piano girl was by far my favorite. She gave a good polished performance and she composed that piece herself(?). Blue hair bro got taken down several pegs and I hope he went home to reflect deeply on why this happened.

The clip people voted for is actually the Chopin piece (I’m the pianist in the video). We had to play for 10 seconds and they posted that on Instagram story of jubilee then the audience voted. I actually messed up but they kept it cause we had only one shot.
The singer had a beautiful voice, but her guitar playing was similar to what the blue haired guy did on piano, only a bit better. Lyrically, I would like to see more from her as well.
Yeah, but with her music, it was clearly her voice that was 'the music' and the guitar that was accompanying her, so I think it's fair to judge her on the singing and not the guitar. You wouldn't judge a singer on the backing track either, right?

I'm sure she has people who want to work with her in that way. However, she judged the blue haired guy on his piano skills, so I was just pointing out that her guitar skill wasn't a whole lot better.

Her voice was nice, but not outstanding, and her lyrics were terrible. Blue hair guy is a better song writer, I felt more listening to him. But her appreciation for multi-instrument players is the same as mine -- very high. LOL.

Tbh, I don't know much about music. I just liked the sound of her voice.
The singer being really good but knowing nothing about music theory is a pretty accurate representation of us LOL. Also I feel like the reason Summer got done dirty is because people who don’t play piano tend not to pay attention to much of the technical stuff. As long as you play a difficult song and hit most of the right notes at mostly the right time, they’ll think you’re an expert. As others have pointed out Summer’s piece wasn’t exactly easy to play either -but it has a slower tempo and sounds less “complex”. Add that to the fact that no one paid attention to her nice dynamics and the great expression and energy she put in because they don’t realize that that’s a skill too.
there is something to be said about multiple instruments. yeah going out to learn as many instruments as possible just so you can be "perceived" as musically talented is silly but learning to make music with whatever you can really help cement a wide variety of musical ideas in your head and can keep things fun and enjoyable and add so much to your musical ability. it did sound like that guy just learned a few things on a few instruments though just so he could be perceived as musically gifted as opposed to really learning the ins and outs of each instrument haha

After watching this I thought the musicians missed the ranking, and instagram was worse. You two had such a good take on each musician and I think the point about “professional” is what separated them. Three of them were hirable and three were bedroom musicians.
Obviously the piano girl is the most solid. Blue haired guy was dunnning-krueger personified. The other where in the middle somewhere couldnt really judge them but do feel the drummer got overlooked because it's an instrument that's hard to grasp and to solo. He had pretty basic leaks but was really on point. Would be happy to have him in my band. I have issues ranking the singer, since she kinda have the voice of every good singers. Would've like to see her tackle a more technically difficult song idk.

As a person who plays multiple instruments (5 and starting to learn my 6th), I would still say that focusing and putting your all on to one instrument is super awesome. I always call myself Jack of all trades and king of none but I certainly would love to become kingly in atleast one by the time I'm older.
I have a similar mindset. I don't think it should be shamed either way, it just depends on what your goals are.

3. Guitar and cello guy but not for the cello part - idk much abt guitar but it was pretty good
4. Drummer guy - he was pretty good idk man I definitely enjoyed his performance which is rly what matters in music
5. Piano guy - tried but didn’t execute it well and his hands are flat

Eddy going back to confirm the drummer's timing was beautiful and why I enjoy this channel.
His timing wasnt really great.. having not much experience with a drumkit, I can see why Eddy thought it wasnt bad, but his bassdrums are really sloppy, his bass+snaredrum hits flam, and his fills were just loud. In fact the whole performance was just loud, nothing else. But to non-drummers that does sound impressive quite often
@@robbertnugteren2801 he was just smacking the shit out of the cymbal and snare with no control of the cymbal and rushing during every fill. He used way too much body movement to fully get advantage of his hands. He was trying to show off and it was really awkward to look at, but we’ve definitely all been there.
Classical guitarists use a Capo (the "Cap" thing?) too, but not as frequently. The reasons include (among others) matching the comfortable register of a singer, getting to the original key the piece was written in, making the piece easier to play, or very rarely evening the sound color, by avoiding "open" strings.
not just for playing with singers. I'm practicing a capo on the 3rd fret just because I don't like the transposed key

@@Idiomatick Not always. It's pretty common for an open string to be used with a few notes down the neck. But of course we avoid it when possible.
And the guitarists in our choir also used capo...and they could transpose with ease while I, the pianist, hadn't learned how to transpose on the fly. Thankfully, I had access to a digital keyboard which could transpose for me while the guitarists just figured it out and added the capo as necessary. And they had a good laugh when the choir director asked for the G flat major piece to be shifted down a tone and landed in E major while I had to keep toiling away in G flat major. And I had a good laugh when my lovely C major piece got shifted into...Honestly, I can't remember what it was shifted into...but I do remember the guitarists couldn't find a single way to do it with any kind of capo without having some crazy difficult chording somewhere! Ah, such good laughs and good memories.

The "cap" thing is called a capo, it's used to raise the pitch/key so singers can feel more comfortable within their vocal range. The more closer to the sound hole the capo is, the higher the sound/key.

I would call them not musicians, but amateurs or in the case with the “blue haired I think I’m number 2 guy” is just a beginner (he literally played kindergarten chords, told a “heartbreaking story” and composed some “every romantic pop song ever” lyrics.
The distinction between what is an amateur and what is a professional musician is very, very blurry. Especially these days.
@@HawkOfGP - The difference between an amateur and a professional is the same as ever. Professional means they get paid to do it. Summer (the piano girl) is literally a professional musician.
@@FenrirInFlowers Well yes, that's one thing, but there are many reasons why I would not advocate the type of thinking Arsen espoused here. There are plenty of professional musicians who can barely play any instruments at all, but still managed to become successful. You don't actually really need to play any instruments to make a living making music, which is true of course of both many singers as well as many electronic music artists, for example.
But when many people picture a "professional musician", they think of someone who plays at least one instrument at a high enough level to be hired to do various types of recordings or live performances for a living. That's arguably a valid definition as well, but this difference between definitions can make the distinction blurry.

I agree that the vocalist and the piano girl were easily the most skilled. I was so shocked when instagram voted her second to last. The guy who played piano was ok but Chopin was out of his skill level, and he seemed nervous. There were too many fumbles to ignore.

Bluehead the HumbleBrag really got pounded down. I mean, the drummer guy got a (reluctant) first place from Mr. Blue and it's super awkward to be critical of people who have spoken of you positively, but when Drummer was called out on his cop-out self-rating of 6th place he still went right and gave the spot to Blue. That's pretty damning, on its own, but he's 5/5 in last place by the estimation of his peers. Blue is NOT having a good day, but I wonder if he'll take it to heart as criticism to grow on, or if he'll just double down on a "They're jealous of me, I'm not appreciated in my time, those talentless hacks!" But yeah, he looks like he's barely holding it together. At least he didn't have a meltdown in front of everyone, that's something.
As to why these artists aren't using a lot of fancy musical terminology, I doubt any of them had a lot of formal schooling. Wouldn't be surprised if they're mostly self-taught perhaps with some tutoring or went to local schools for a while. Regardless, I doubt they went to an academy for years with multiple courses on music theory and history anyway. People trying to show that they know their stuff (or really, just trying to show off) do tend to try to use as much jargon as they can (sometimes to the point it sounds unnatural), but it doesn't seem to come naturally to this group so it's doubtful they took courses where it was pounded into their brain, which is why I think they haven't had a lot of serious formal schooling in music.
Also, I'm surprised they didn't comment on the state of the bow.
Blue probably streams on Twitch and gets told all the time by his little crowd how awesome he is. I can't think of another reason to feel so self-righteous and above the actually trained musicians (seemingly there were only 2 or 3).
I can understand that not everyone has the privilege of going to a music school and having formal training. In saying that, if I (a low level AMEB clarinet player) got invited to appear on a Jubilee episode about music perfromance, I'd decline because I'm realistic about my skill level and know I wouldn't provide a fair representation for my instrument. Looking at some of the performances given here, I'm not sure why they accepted coming onto the show when they're not ready.
@@isaacmarks31 Exposure, plain and simple. The average person (myself included) doesn't really know how to judge how good a musician is. I mean, if I had watched them without Brett and Eddy commentating I would have said most of them sound fine, and they do for the most part it seems, they're just not especially good is all, apparently?
For the more self-aware of the group they know that exposure is probably the best way they'll stand out from the crowd of other players of a similar talent level, so taking the risk and hoping they look good in this video makes sense for them.
And then you have Bluehair; someone who perhaps overestimated his talent a touch...He was the most arrogant, but some of the others might feel they're a bit better than they are.

I feel like there should be a distinction made between musician who play for a hobby, and those who play professionally (generally speaking). There is such a huge distinction between these two and two separate videos could be made because then I feel like they would evaluate each other more “accurately”.

Love this. The only thing I'd say is that the blue hair guy definitely is more of a coffee shop artist and songwriter. I think he needs to find a vocal coach. He needs to put the time in.
This shows the value of being both confident and humble. Confident enough to know your own skill and own it in silence regardless what others say. Humble enough to know there are others better than you and to be happy for them and see them as inspiration for your own growth.
Any ranking not having the piano girl as #1 is just straight up wrong. She had full control over every aspect of that piece.

considering summer's piano piece was an original, she had by far the most talent. She wrote her own song which was beautiful, she had expressive qualities and her playing was phenomenal. I think the main part i would rank her first is that she wrote the piece herself and it was my gosh gorgeous, had lots of elements. people don't know how hard it is to write a good song until you try it.
