The $1,000 Honda Accord EX Coupe needs a bit of mechanical help. Let's dig into it and fix everything setting the check engine light. The CEL is set for codes: P1259, P040, and P0132. We're starting with the P0404 by removing the EGR valve, cleaning it, removing all the old gasket material, and replacing the gasket with a Fel-Pro amzn.to/2JeBut6
After the EGR valve was ready to be reinstalled I removed the VTEC solenoid to resolve the P1259 code. There was some oil around the solenoid but nothing serious. From what I've seen these are rather sensitive to any oil leak or low pressure condition. I removed the solenoid assembly, tested it, cleaned everything up and replace both seals with the Dorman 917-170 kit amzn.to/2JewLYu
Replacing the spark plugs changed the scope of work a bit, one spark plug tube was nearly full of oil and is the likely cause for the erratic rough idle. The spark plugs were replaced with 4 NGK V-Power Platinums amzn.to/2LoLdzU
After that I finished the job with a new valve cover gasket set and a new air filter.
    Fel-Pro VS50493R Valve Cover Set amzn.to/2DLneEE
FRAM CA8133 Extra Guard Rigid Rectangular Panel Air Filter amzn.to/2WlgXHj

Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

For example here in Florida I think I'm capped at 10 annual sales before I would be required to have a license. I used to have a 2000 Accord 4 cylinder with the ULEV motor. At 250,000 miles or so I had ongoing EGR problems, despite replacing and cleaning the valve. One thing that can happen is there are small passages in the intake plenum that coke up as well. I tried to avoid tackling the removal of the intake plenum by trying to sneak a wire up into the passages to scrape it out, but it soon coked up again. Car still ran decently when I sold it at 288k for $1,200 in 2012, but fixing the emissions issues was more than the car was worth, and an emissions inspection was looming.

Man I know you are tripping on cars, but that Accord almost feels like a keeper. Can't believe that you got the interior that clean, sounds like you got it running like a new car. Plus since the body is kind of beat up, its a good car for when you go into the city and don't care if somebody scrapes into it.

@@WatchJRGoMany years ago I was in the British Army Based in Germany. Because of the difference in the cost of living I got my normal wages and Overseas Allowance (Worked out based on where you were)? I went with a friend to look at brand new Toyotas. I ordered one. A Toyota Carolla Lift Back 1.2 Ltr Manual, Left Hand Drive. 0 % down, Payment over 3 years and the good news was my OA covered that and the Insurance. It was the first one in Germany (1 of 12 in my Regt by the time I left Germany it was a nice little car). Toyota recommended twice yearly Engine Oil Changes. At the time my Regt were doing trials on different vehicles looking at was that correct including Army vehicles. So twice a year I drained the Oil and got it tested. Same oil after 5 years and only replaced the Oil Filter Once a year? Very reliable and sold it to another Army person in Germany when I left and yes he knew all about the Oils. He did some of the tests.

This generation Accord is a reliable car. I still see a lot of them (I have one too) even though some are more than 20 years old. Mine has 122k miles and runs well and does not leak any fluids. I recently had my mechanic replace those VTEC solenoid gaskets because I noticed a slight oil leak and didn't want it to get any worse. If you perform the timing belt replacement and don't run the engine out of oil or overheat it and change the oil regularly the 4 cylinder engines in these cars will last a long time.

@@1575murray Thanks, semi-agree on the turbocharger bit. Work at Audi dealership and their turbocharged engines routinely came in with 200k miles, know from experience many American turbocharged cars do not make 100k miles.

You may have done this off camera but the tubes that go back into the valve cover you never put the clamps back on them. They are still clamped a few inches up from where the tube connects to the valve cover

There should have been 4 O-rings that you have to replace by removing the rocker arm assembly... very easily removable. Most of the time with those vtecs, that’s where the oil leaks from if you’ve ever noticed it burns oil.

well... it's not nice to not evacuate the oil before putting the spark plug back in, I've seen a lot of hydrolocking situations because of that. I usually crank the engine without the affected cylinder to push the oil out

OK, this is at least the second time I've watched you remove spark plugs from a well that's been flooded with oil due to a hardened vc gasket and never have you shown any concern for the oil that runs into the cyl after you removed the spark plugs,
There's a significant potential for the piston to "hydro-lock" and either bend a connecting rod or break a piston, if you have the right conditions occurring, You REALLY shouldn't reinstall your plugs into the head WITHOUT FIRST CRANKING THE ENGINE OVER WITH THE PLUGS OUT AND THE THROTTLE AT WOT, this is all it takes to avoid a major disaster to the bottom end of the motor, and should be done if you don't have a compressor and long blow gun to clean the wells BEFORE removing the plugs, which is my personal preferred method, just a thought...

I was taught that when you put the valve cover back on, you do it in a cris-cross pattern to torque it correctly. I have not seen in done in sequential order until this video. Question to those more experienced than me - which way is correct? Thanks.
