  • Ground zero in the command and control model of management is the military. It's what has informed the way most organizations are designed today. But what if there was a better way of organizing that challenged the conventional fear-based management model and actually made people more effective, even in life and death scenarios? David Marquet, now a retired US Navy Captain, tells his remarkable story of abandoning the command-and-control military paradigm, leveraging the power of freedom-centered leadership, and developing the most respected crew in the Navy.

I always enjoy his "Santa Fe" story. He is an uncommon leader with great initiative. I think the Navy wasn't comfortable with his style. He should have had the opportunity to become an Admiral.

Leadership is about progressing from Yelling to telling to Asking. Coaches need to start asking questions , the right way. It is an Art,

hmmm. How can you rise to Navy 'Captain' with only 7 yrs of service?!!!! A Navy captain is equivalent to an Army Colonel. You don't make Colonel in 7 yrs unless it's war time and you've had several field promotions.

Duh, he says seven years under water. Deployments are six or so months. There's shore duty, stents at the pentagon, etc. And lest you forget, we've been at war since 2001. Although, he would have been eligible for 20 year retirement in 2001.
