Wow!! That is an easy conversion!!! Thanks for posting this Don! The original filter on this had some good intent for the end-consumer, but overall, it is much worse for the environment, and engine with respect to having close to 100% clean, fresh oil to use after an oil change. Have a great up-coming weekend.

I have watched about 6 of these videos and your video is by far the best. Short and to the point and consise. The only thing I haven't seen is using an oil extractor to remove the oil. I bought one years ago for my boat and I use it on my tractor, power washer and Cyclone rake it makes life easier and less messy I will do this on my new S170 until the warranty runs out, as I am not sure if making the change will affect my warranty and by using the extractor till then, I will at least have all fresh oil!

First thing I did after break in was to throw that junk Sleezy EZ oil change garbage away and do what you did but I used the Briggs and Stratton 594200 Oil Drain Hose and the Briggs & Stratton 796532 Hose Connector. The flexible oil drain hose is really convenient. It’s flexible and has an easy drain cap. That EZ thing leaves dirty oil in the engine too.

In the US they were $40, 4 years ago. Now they are close to $60. The idea was to make oil changes very easy for home owners, which they are, and the oil is triple filtered in those huge filters. However, it costs more than double for an oil change and the oil isn't really as clean as a full change. I have the kit, ready to go on this spring. 😉

  • @226eagleeye
    @226eagleeye Місяць тому

I did it, very easy but before you remove the existing filter assembly make sure to stuff a lot of rugs under and more importantly behind the old filter assembly. If you don’t you will end up with plenty of oil running through the holes of the frame and on top of the belt pulley. This will happen even after removing the filter and after emptying the oil.
    Do it in this order.
    1. Start the engine to warm up the old oil a bit. Wait 5 min.
    2. Remove oil filter only for now. Also remove the side panel by the filter. 8mm socket, very easy.
    3. Empty the oil out of the pan. I left the existing oil plug in place. I don’t trust the nipple with the plastic part so I didn’t replace it. If that comes off kiss your engine goodbye. My hand pump got rid of all the old oil through the dipstick hole.
    4. Now remove the old filter assembly and put your new oil filter nipple in place.
    5. Screw the new filter on and add 1 and 3/4 quarts of SAE 10W-30 oil. (Only if you are sure all the old oil is out.)
    6. Start the engine and run for a minute. Check for leaks around oil filter.
    7. Shut off engine, wait for 5 min, check oil level and fill as necessary. Mine took 2 qts plus a few ozs more.
What I did didn’t require me removing the panel on the oil plug side.

I converted with the help of your vid. Thanks. I'm now wondering if a different dipstick is necessary.
Before conversion, a good quantity of oil stays in the filter system, which the dipstick can't measure.

Go to a JD dealer that sells lawn tractors and you will be told that their product is better because you can "change" the oil in 30 seconds without getting your hands dirty. That is their target market. Homeowners who don't want to drain or use an oil extractor and take used oil to recycle. The same homeowner who thinks it's ok to throw a quart of used oil into household garbage. I bought a hardly used E170 and did this same conversion a few months ago. The JD parts counterman acknowledged that every one of their customers who are DIYers has done the conversion.

Great video, thanks for the insights... that said, it's so disappointing that JD would stoop to something like this, makes you wonder about their commitment to quality, the environment and their customers.
One suggestion, you could shape aluminum foil under the oil drain plug to route all of the oil into a pan below... bend up little edges on both sides to channel the oil where it needs to go. This also works when you are changing the oil as needed.

Fantastic. I can see the idea of the easy/no mess changing of filter but leaving that much oil in and charging that much for the fancy filter seems criminal. I'm guessing they upped the filter change frequency so while you're not changing all the oil (and nothing in the sump/sludge/particles?), you're always adding fresh oil/additives, etc. to compensate.
Too bad you can't unscrew just a filter from the easy change thing after removal, and replace that, then reinstall the easy change thing. Ideally, being able to add oil to the filter/assembly as well before re-installation on the engine.
Next they'll be adding computer controlled engine that they'll force you to pay exorbitant prices to replace by factory trained mechanic when it should be repairable. Support right-to-repair!

A 2 liter pop bottle, or plastic one gallon milk jug cut to fit into the drain plug area will direct the dirty oil into your drain pan prior to installing the new drain tube. Keeps the mess to a minimum.

I see the points going for the ez change system. Lots of people don’t change their oil. It is messy. Even people who know what they are doing make messes doing oil changes, and it has a bunch of steps involved. With this you don’t even have to warm up the engine to “change” your oil, there’s no mess. A person may be more likely to use this, and that way they do end up prolonging the life of their engine a bit over never doing anything, but never as long as doing proper oil changes at proper intervals would.
And John Deere makes a bigger fortune selling you their proprietary filters and oil. That’s the most important thing.
I like how they tell the people using this system to add more oil as needed like they actually check their oil level ever, much less top it off. If they did that they wouldn’t use the ez change system.

I just saw this system yesterday on a John Deere.
Da, I said to my wife.
How would you get the oil out of the crank case.
    Pretty silly idea.
    Thanks for the video Dony.

Might do it, but for now I’ll just drain it all the way, buy the filter, and top off with synthetic Amsoil. Then I’ll drain it half as much as I normally would. Always have good oil around anyways.

Hey Dony, I did this a couple of years ago on a E130. The easy change costs $85 in Australia. The conversion costed approx $45 and now its converted my oil changes are under $30 per year.... compared to $85, which is not an oil change its a oil top up

How is the cap for the oil drain pipe holding up?
I think that looks a bit flimsy.

Another diy video. I like how Don shows the part# of the part for the repairs. John Deere cutting corners. WOW thats a half oil change. What a waste of oil.

Good morning Don. Another great vid. You and I both hate that drippy oil mess. YUK! Would it help or is it worth the time to elevate the side you're working on? Then get the drain tube installed. Once done, set in down to finish draining the oil. You are the pro. You would know best. I don't even own a rider. Awesome vid Don.

Thanks for this excellent video. I have a new 170 lawn tractor and plan on making this conversion this fall. Maybe this is why John Deere gives a 2 yr. warranty and the other brand gives a 3 yr. warranty. Do you and anyone else have any idea if doing the conversion impacts or voids the JD warranty?

I would not trust this litle plastic cap on the drain plug, is there another plug option with conventionnal metal plug cap? Great video!! You did improove 2 things doing this conversion, cheaper filter, and a complete dirty oil drain!
