Honestly, finding a new band/artist that you love or diving deeper into band's discography that you already like and finding more gold is one of the greatest feelings ever and one of the reasons I love the internet age. There are so many bands that I would have never discovered such as The Dresden Dolls, Jeff Rosenstock, Bomb The Music Industry, 22, Closure in Moscow, Clipping etc that I absolutely love and also bands that I already liked that I ended up loving through their listening to more of them like SOAD, Coheed and Cambria, MCR, Cattle Decapitation etc. I've always loved discovering new music and with today's technology, it's literally never been easier
I appreciate that you always include the statement, that appears in the title, right in the beginning of the segment. None of that ”you have to watch the whole video before u’re able to watch the part you actually clicked the video for”.
5:15 This is actually a huge thing in gaming, can't believe how many times I've seen someone say some shit like "Persona 5 is my favorite game, can't wait to play it"
5:07 Oh Trust me, there are plenty of people that hate on albums they've never heard but just assume is bad because of the artist or because others say it's bad.
Let's Argue: MCR's Danger Days was actually a good album. Sure it's not their best, Possibly even their worst (I haven't listened to them all), But it's still good, And infact it being "Poppier" than their other albums makes it a good starting point for people who don't usually listen to Emo or Post-Hardcore. Granted I may be a bit biased, As it was actually the first MCR music I ever heard, But still.
That new band and watching them is really incredible. My favorite band is Every Time I Die, and I got into them right before Gutter Phenomenon came out. Being there for almost the whole ride was very cool.
Hey Anthony, mad solidarity with feeling old, I'm only 27 and yet I aggravate over it because I feel like I missed out on so much and it sucks, I'm there with you
I bought Ghost's debut album as a birthday present to myself on January 21, 2011. I had never heard of the group, and the only reason why I bought the album at all was because the artwork was an homage to the poster for the Stephen King adaptation, Salem's Lot. I loved it immediately and have been a fan ever since. Little did I know that I bought the album a mere three days after it had been released in America. Seeing Ghost go from this little tongue-in-cheek niche hard rock group into world-touring Grammy-winning world-famous juggernauts of the genre is so surreal.
As someone who works in the music industry (currently work on the sync team at a music publisher) I wanted to touch on the question about the sampling process. I agree with melon that smaller artists have much less to worry about because labels and major publishers like Warner Chappell, Sony/ATV, Universal, etc. won’t waste the money to pursue if the money isn’t there, but please tread this line carefully. While getting a sample cleared can be long and arduous and unnecessary, it can still be very necessary sometimes if you’re a smaller artist. So in my professional opinion I would not write it off completely just because you aren’t getting millions of views/streams. As someone who specifically works in sync (pitching music to be in TV shows, movies, etc.) I’ve placed a lot of small independent artists in larger movies, TV shows, ad campaigns, all that stuff. And uncleared samples can lead to a lot of issues for the artist. As the publisher we reach out before before hand to confirm with the artist that no samples are used, but we’ve had many instances where we’re told that there are no samples when there definitely were, just because the artist didn’t want to go through that ridiculous process of getting them cleared (which is totally understood I get it believe me I also help clear samples). At that point since we, the publisher, did our part to confirm in writing, the legal trouble wouldn’t fall on us, it would fall on the artist. Just wanted to put my two cents in and hopefully help a smaller artist learn something new that could potentially help them out down the road!
Regarding reviewing an album you haven't listened to, I AGREE, but from a film buff's perspective. There are reviews I've seen where the critic in question walked out of the theater before the credits, such as Roger Ebert's reviews of Caligula and the Texas Chainsaw remake, and there are cases where critics left before the midway point and incorrectly summarized the film's events afterwards, such as the New York Observer's review of "V/H/S 2". But IMO, there aren't many cases where people reviewed a film they straight up haven't seen. The one case I can think of is a review of Lars Von Trier's "Antichrist" where the critic refused to see the film and wrote a zero-star "review" where they explained why the film seemed immoral to them and they felt a moral duty to speak out against it. While I think we should be open about works of art we think are harmful or immoral, articles like these are more the realm of thinkpieces, while reviews are supposed to be an analysis of the work first, with all other concerns coming alongside that. All in all, you can listen to the albums you want, or the films you like, and you can say something insightful about where your taste begins and ends, but a review comes after the artwork, not the other way round.
Regarding sampling: 100% agree with that logic. Look at chance the rapper, if you have the talent & are decent at spreading the word you can go lots of places.
