quit calling stupid ppl "stupid"
stupid ppl don't like to be reminded
Well Germans put batteries in the back of the trunk too (BMW) funnyman.
😆... 🙌🏼
Hi Scotty, thank u for your amazing videos that help us make clever and rational choices with our cars. I wonder of you could tell honda to use ac compressors, alternators and other small parts from denso, since they are using cheaper low quality parts
@7:22 Code B210D - Battery Voltage Low.."those aren't really why the car won't start either..."
Me: Pulls up to Scottys garage in a Dodge.
Scotty: That’ll be $10 stupid fee before I even see what’s wrong with it.
🤣😆🤣
Friend mechanic down the street has a popular shop- they will work on anything foreign except for Audi! Hehe. Too expensive and many of the repairs come undone, apparently. (A common problem nowadays now that replacement OEM parts come from cheaper factories than actually-delivered-on-the-car parts)

I think it would be at least $100 nowadays.
LOL 😆 🤣, I love how Scotty call his clients stupid.

He says people… not his customers… but then again it’s the people who becomes his customers 🤣
They are tho I'm 100% sure they seen his videos n still don't listen
I'm sure he's talkin' to those that will watch this video and think they know better.. and sure as hell will turn around and do opposite.
Scotty modified his comments in the video-the makers are stupid!
I love how, “it’s like giving birth” is followed by, “who would design something so poorly?” Lmfao
With A Picture Of Pewdiepie Too 😂
It is a bad design to breathe from the same hole you eat from 😆
I love hearing Scotty work on cars that he hates 🤣

I think his customers purposefully go against his advice on car buying so they can hear him get angry

"The engineers can do as they please" Yes, Scotty they sure can. Many cars I've owned and worked on I've said, "If I ever meet the engineer, Imma curb stomp that bastard".

If your average backyard mechanic designed their own car it'd come out like the one Homer Simpson came up with.

I'm surprised they didn't put the alternator in the trunk as well and run a really long belt to it.

Nicely done! 😂👍
Would that be longer than a telephone wire?? lol

U missed the pewdepie reference
Always remove the negative terminal first, then positive but only needed when replacing the battery. This way you are safe when your wrench is on the positive terminal. Nothing will happen if it accidently touches chassis/engine metal parts.
And believe me - it WILL!
@@every1665 GREAT POINT. And once that negative cable is back on, be *very careful* if you mess with the Positive terminal again. (Ideally, don't be tightening it any more!) Learned this lesson about a month ago working on my 1988 Astro Van. That new battery from NAPA was HOT!
Countless modern cars have the battery mounted in the trunk . it protects the battery from engine compartment heat , and extreme cold outside temperatures , the main things that shorten battery life . that's why it is not uncommon to see car batteries last 10 years now . cables can be as long as you want them , as long as they are the correct gauge . at least dodge made the starter easy to replace . ever replaced the starter on a tundra ? Replacing the alternator on that volvo is a walk in the park in comparison .

I just had the alternator replaced in my 2010 XC90 .. the alternator was $770 (Volvo oem) and $450 in labor! $1,220 to replace my alternator! 🤬

That car isn't for you if you cannot replace an alternator and go to the stealer!
Toyota Camry 2010 alternator( Toyota oem )$450 AUD and labor $120 AUD to replace the alternator ( 40 minutes to change)
I had a 2004 Volvo S60 T5. Had the most unusual/freak issue , even the dealer didn't know wtf was going on. I would lose ALL Electronics WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. Engine would still run but i would lose all electronic control (power windows, wipers, blinkers etc .) AND would lose all Dash lights and gauges. Everything would read 0 as if the key was never in. But stereo would play fine.... Got rid of that garbage and will NEVER buy another

You're the best, Scotty.
IT IS NOT DUMB TO PUT THT BATTERY IN THE TRUNK! In my 2005 Volvo the battery lasts forever. In the trunk the battery is protected from heat, cold ,water, dirt etc.
True, when you put it like that it does make sense.I have a 2010 Holden Commodore.I was looking under the bonnet when i first bought and could not find the battery.I thought WTF is making it start?Found it in the trunk which i thought was weird considering other Commodores i had before were under the bonnet.
Everything is crap if not american!
So me buying a used 2014 mazda was much better than my other option. A volvo.
Yes, in some strange reality where those are your only options 🤔
Surprised not to see Chevy Impala on here from 2000-2005.
My Dad was a taxi driver in Australia. In the early 90s, the taxis were mainly EB Ford Falcons. Four litre straight six. It was so crowded under the hood that they relentlessly cooked the batteries of cars that were on the road 24/7. Repositioning the battery to the trunk in a marine cradle was a standard modification for that model. That created other issues. Good times!
PS. Love your videos, Scotty. 👍
Can someone count how much times Scotty says “stupid” 😂😂
And crap. But he's accurate
Engineers’ mantra: “Never design something simple and straightforward when you can make it grand and glorious.”
yes - if they are idiots lacking in common sense - but this is 75% of them -
AC used for power distribution primarily do to easy & cheaper conversion to higher, then lower voltages. Thereby reducing current needed, which reduce I^2R looses.
Actually DC current will incur less transmission loss due to AC skin effect and coronal discharge. Some large power transmission systems use DC.
It's unfortunate that those slightly newer Volvo station wagons have so many design problems because they're still Rock Solid and handle accidents really well with less damage than most and can take a lot of punishment
I have a VolvoV70 p3 with the battery in the front and even I can give the car a full service it's the easiest car I've ever had and worked on , it drives very smooth and it's got lots of power and even gives good mpg, Im getting 37.5 MPG at the moment and I have a heavy foot , so I wouldn't tar all Volvo's with the same brush but he is right about the Volvo in the video they are hard to work on.
@@paulgilraine3127 I had a 99 V70, 5 cylinders (no power 😂but I don't drive fast anyway). It ran very smoothly and comfortably. If you change the battery you have to get the radio code from a dealer.
So does a pickup with a massive steel bumper on it ans is cheaper and easier to wlrk on.
A friend had a 2002 KIA Sorento....he called it the Kia Diarrhea. It ran like crap. Eventually it died....we towed it to a field and filled it with 20 lbs. of tannerite explosive.....and shot at it with our rifles......there was nothing left.....I wish we would have put it on video.
Sounds epic
Nice
I've been watching Scotty so long I've already seen these videos in the past and still laughing and smiling all the way through. Awesome
My OEM Miata battery was in the trunk of a white car. It lasted over 15 years. I finally replaced it for age but it still started the car .
Heat kills batteries. Under the hood is convenient for mechanics, but they don't last as long.
My daughter's HHR has the battery buried under the rear cargo panel, but it lasted a long time. That one was 10 years old before we replaced it two years back. HHR is a Cobalt/Equinox/Saturn Vue, but the retro fender made them move the battery.
Hey Scotty, I have a 2005 Saturn Ion, The battery is in the Trunk, Iam the original owner with 150000 mile and have only changed the battery 2 time since I have owned the car, never changed the clutch or pressure plate, Go american made cars.
1. Volvo
2. RAM
3. KIA
I’m very surprised to see no Nissan & Fiat-Jeep-Chrysler on this list
Nissan is hit or miss, Fiat doesn’t have that many vehicles, Jeep and Chrysler are the same components as Ram. 😂
I love all Scottie's videos but I laughed through the thing this time 🤣🤣🤣
Gotta love the first two seconds, imo the average Volvo is worth less than its average stock price.
The Yugo: Yu go, but your car don't!
Scotty would have loved my 1st car, a Chevy Chevette. 😂✌
Me too I can say it was better than walking
Same here..... having a Chevy Chevette was like asking women to ignore you.
Old saying was Chuvette or Leavette. Lol
I don't feel so bad now. 😂👍
Although a crude little car, they actually weren't a bad car for a small budget.
"They sure had thier fingers in thier rear ends " LOL ! Perfect
AC allows the convenient conversion of high voltage low current to low voltage high current and vice-versa.
It's higher voltage that allows less loss and it's easier to transform a c.
Volvo: First time I heard you bash Volvo!
Kia: My flooring contractor has a 2012 Optima Hybrid loaded up. First the electric motor went out under warranty. But they said he had to pay $2000 for wiring not covered under warranty. After complaining to Kia, he got it down to $1000. After that he said the gas engine "blew up". I think you're right about Kia and Hyundai; they talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk.
Volvo may be stupid, but British Leyland was stupider! The makers of my ‘71 MG-B hung their batteries (yeah, two 6-volts) from the undercarriage. Access was through a door behind and below the seat. But, I was the stupidest for buying that money pit.
I was young and thought I knew my way around a car. Hard knocks are the best lessons.
Whenever Scotty Kilmers drops the new videos I roll up the Wool-o and get all schmoked up.
I used to have a 2010 Kia Forte SX, it easily got to 180,000 Miles, only things I had to do was change the fuel filter, oil, and battery.
I'll say it. A certain type of person buys a Volvo. One that would never dirty their hands....lol!
I bought one many years ago, because I was young, dumb and didn't know much about cars and it was cheap... it was one of those learning experiences for sure: Never again 😂
Volvos are great, buy a volvo 740 and ur set for about 600k km and 1000bucka and 350k more...just know which one to buy
Volvo was owned by ford when that Volvo was made, just connect the dots with that information.
Scotty, the coolant is likely leaking from the cylinder head gasket. Was the engine ever overheated? If yes, that could have warped the cylinder head. Check the torque of the cylinder head bolts.
Scotty: teaches 100k people how to hot wire a RAM truck. After listening to it start, I'd say you'd be a stupid person to steal one!
Well he did say the stupid Dodge trucks hood wouldn't stay up you know.... that might be the best way to start it! Just another stupid Dodge design.....
Ha! My Mazda 3 was half that price, is fun to drive and gets an average of 35 mpg. On the highway it gets 55 - 60.
It's also half a car.

I love my 07 Volvo S60t it’s taken a lot of use and abuse previous owner used to tow jet skis I go off roaring with it. 170+K miles.
As you’ve seen in the video they can be a PITA to work on but they’re not bad cars
Do you have to do a lot of maintenance? I'm thinking of getting a 2018 but consumer reports rates it very poorly for reliability.
My son has a Chevy Cobalt -battery in the trunk, for a few years. So far so good-fingers crossed!
And my son is no dummy!
Battery will not explode upon a frontal impact during a collision
They last longer in the trunk. Heat kills chemical batteries over time.
jack petre, I owned a 2000 Buick LeSabere, and the battery was under the back seat. It had the 3800 V6, and had plenty of room for the battery to be under the hood. My very honest mechanic said it was a stupid idea. I wish I still owned it though as it was a really great car.
@@ggsumner1947 it was there for weight distribution.
Mechanics, like all tradesmen, hate anything different or inconvenient for them at the moment.
It is their form of momentary rage.
Someone please start the Scotty Kilmer Fan Club - I want to join !!!
Much rather the Cadenza over the Optima. Shame they just discontinued the Cadenza
Batteries in the trunk, to keep it warmer, so that it's rated for colder climates. As you know the biggest killer of Batteries, is the cold bud.
So what about his theory that it’s a bad idea to have the battery so far away from the engine in the alternator, with long cables etc.?
@@damagecontrol60 It's only okay when Toyota does that like with the second gen Prius.
Camaros have common issues with their batteries/charging systems and they place batteries in trunk. Not always a good idea.
Cold can deactivate batteries by slowing the ion transfer, but heat shortens the life of a battery.
It may seem counterintuitive, but you jump a freezing cold battery and it's fine after it warms up.
An overly hot battery will die and be buried.
It has little to do with keeping the battery cold or warm. It's packaging 99% of the time, and many cars are like this. Most GMs from the 2000's with the bigger engines have the battery under the back seat, Caddie still puts the batteries in the trunk, Chrysler does it with the Charger and Challenger, Toyota with the Prius (Yes, they have a 12 volt battery too.), Ford with Hybrid Fusions, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, and more. The key determining factors are often weight distribution and room under the hood. They don't put the battery in the trunk for reliability.
"I work on these pieces of crap a lot", lol
Scotty is the only business man that calls his clients stupid and gets away with it.
He's very fond of calling people stupid , yet he says a lot of very stupid things .
My family had early 80's 240 sedans that lasted over 500,000 kms. The heater core was a hassle, but solid cars.
Old Volvos were simple and tough 😊 Newer ones the opposite ☹️
Somebody on my street still drives an old 240 wagon to this day. I keep hoping we’ll get to introduce ourselves someday so I can ask how many miles on the clock!
Scotty, several months ago you said Volvo was the best brand of European car and how tough those XC70 were, my wife's feelings are now hurt!
He changes his opinions like the weather does! When someone brings a "piece of crap" for showing up, then he change his vocabulary and that cars are not so bad!
Scotty I usually agree with you but the reason the battery is in the trunk on European cars is for cold weather.
Living in Canada, I doubt that is the reason. Northern US and Canadian winters are colder. My Miata NB and Porsche 928 had them in the trunk but that was due to lack of space up front.
@3:50 I once had a prestine 2003 volvo v40 estate. Until the clutch went. Every mechanic I knew didnt want to touch it due to the sheer stupid complexity involvef, not worth even twice the normal charges. When later I saw similar V40s selling for beans on ebay with a similar issue, I understood why.
3:39 literally saying Volvo has their fingers up their end😂😂
Scotty, the poor design is Volvo’s secret plan to generate more repair costs to support the repair side of Volvo dealers.
That’s very generous of Volvo. 😆
@@adriannalundasan7570 it is for weight distribution.
The front end is too heavy. Putting the battery in the back gives you more grip on the winter.
@@dragospahontu so is a 1000lbs in the front end can be even out by the battery in the rear?

Correct and never had any issues with mine (1985 316).
The battery will not explode upon a frontal impact being in the rear.
It doesn't matter much where in the vehicle the battery sits, as long as the cables are correctly sized, (cross sectional area),for the run to the starter, (the highest amperage draw on the system). Extremes of temperature both up and down are the enemy of a car battery...

We have a custom built 2000 Dodge RAM 2500 Class 3 that we bought about 12-13 years ago. It's rusting like crazy but it's strong, runs great, and mechanically, hubs hasn't had to do much at all to it. Since we have no payments on it, we're keeping it and restoring it. It's great for heavy hauls like firewood, stone, mulch and all kinds of heavy stuff.
@@ampulsion Actually, I don't think it's even hit 100K yet, but if so, it's not much over. Oh, and the reason it's rusting so much is the original owner lived in Wisconsin (winter weather!) and it went through a hail storm. It was owned by a trucker who had it built to haul heavy transformers.
Hybrids put the engine to high load after start to heat up faster and use the power produced to charge the battery.
Eco and Power mode usually only change the gas pedal mapping, you get more power earlier, nothing else changes.
Usually you can get better launch performance by braking and pushing the gas pedal at the same time, this will rev up the engine, just release the brake to launch.

Got a 2013 Kia Rio with manual windows and automatic transmission. Its 6 years old mom got it dirt cheap some time ago and now its mine and it has 100,000+ miles on it and A/C blows cold
It is a 2013 Ford Fiesta with a different badge, and made in Georgia. As a standard 5sp S class, no options they run long time. 200k miles or more. Keep up with oil changes and the motor may never die.
Clutches are consumables like brakes and tires, however my Fiesta has 166k and still pulls a hill great.
Automatics in cheap cars often SUCK, but the Kia automatic was better than the Ford DCT.
My kia rio after 7 years and 148 000km is holding up like a champ, nothing broke, 1 set of new brake is about all it cost me extra...too bad the hatch is rusty all around, otherwise i would buy a new one....but it is a good car, still feel new and sharp....

@@STho205 Yeah, i got all the stuff and basic knowledge to do it, but i'm thinking of switching the hatch from a scrapyard...the rust is heavy and on multiple locations, too bad because that is the only rust on it except of course the bottom spot of both back wheel, a common thing because of design, not defect (the dirt coming from frontwheel chip away the paint, a 3m sticker would have prevented that)
i have a 96 chevy c1500 its a good running trucks the most annoying issue i found is the gear shifter likes to break easy i drove months with a wire attached to the sloot the little ball on the shifter goes in to get it into gear i got one from a wrecking yard and it lasted maybe a month or so then it broke again i bought a brand new one with a life time warranty

The battery in the trunk is not a big problem. The cables are high current and they can deliver with minimum losses, then the acces to the battery is easy, less heat from the engine, more space in the engine bay , helps with weight distribution, you can also jumpstart or help someone easier because you have terminals available at the back and front.
