This week I talked with Kenneth Yarus, who shared his story on his background, things facing artists today like AI art. What are your thoughts on AI? Should artists avoid or embrace it? 🤔

My take away Andrew, is having the confidence I’m on the right path. I admire both yourself and Kenneth. After 45 years in commercial art with the last half on a computer, I retired and after 3 years of thinking I “could have been a contender”, I began plein air, alla prima painting 3 weeks ago for the love of painting. I hear voices, academically secure, it’s the composition as Kenneth talked about that was minimized in my education. Intuitively, I’m not bad with that, but not that confident either. My last three paintings folks wanted to buy. I’ve done six. Tomorrow I plan to step outside my front door, in Lewes, Delaware USA, and paint the beautiful blossoming trees framing my neighbor’s house, in a forced atmospheric perspective. My art school years were with artists bent on abstract expressionism, but I fought that and learned realism because I too love the majesty of Bierstadt since the early 1970’s when I saw a painting of his at the Met in NYC.

Listening to this podcast while working on my new masterpiece was heavenly! I'm impressed with how articulate Kenneth is and with his work ethic and sense of direction in life. I really enjoyed the philosophical discussions. Oil painting is a bit bittersweet for me. I started a few years ago, shortly after retiring, and everyone says I'm damn good. Although it's great to paint without worrying about bills, I will always wonder where I would be now if I would have started young and made a career of it. Even though I'm 59 and super healthy, I envy you guys for having so much time ahead for mastering the craft and cranking out the masterpieces. Anyway, you all are a big inspiration...thanks!
Dude you are only 59. You've got a long way to go potentially! There are a lot of super successful people that started late in life in one thing or another. Don't beat yourself up.

Thank you both!! Kenneth, I went to art school in NYC also. I hated it. Loved a few things but could not wait to leave. I ended up going on a 4500 mile bike trip to recover! :D

My art teacher taught us that Raw umber is actually a blue... that bamboozled me .. but it works... makes lovely greens when mixed with yellows. I would have to find my notes on it .

Great interview! Learned so much, thank you Andrew. I was hoping you would have mentioned the adhesion and long term problems about underpainting with acrylics and then applying oils on top, as you have probably looked into this with Virgil Elliot and his extensive research. But I definitely feel tempted to do the same, as it´s so much easier and faster. If you can, please let us know your opinion on this, thank you again!
Albert Bierstadt died almost broke, and fell from popularity in his late life, which showed how much the art world swung from what he produced in his lifetime, this trend in art was galvanized by the political association with the style that his artwork embodied in a larger part, was speaking of from a historical view in the eyes of the richer people who became those that would be in a position of buying his work...
I agree 100% Andrew. Most of the stuff going on is by design. And geared up to money in most cases.
what kind of panels/ canvas is Kenneth using here? I was using 7/8" canvas and they would warp under drying... so I moved to 1.5" canvas and now its almost impossible to find QUALITY frames with this rabbet depth. PLEASE advise.... thank you
American academy of art in Chicago use to be a great school With excellent talent… things changed over the years. But when I went the Chicago art academy would play football with the American academy and they’d say the Chicago academy wouldn’t teach them how to draw. I had excellent training at American academy in the 80’s
Good morning, Andrew. I'll be totally honest. I love your show, painting videos, and hey, your brushes. Just a big thank you for all the help. But I haven't done anything in awhile.
My question I've had life interruptions that's kept me from painting being a farmer it's been hard.
I've tried taking classes, and recently, in between work aging and dealing with chronic pain, my idea was to get out take a group painting class at a senior place and the leader of the class looked at my work and asked, so what can we do for you in this class?What do you expect to gain. Looking at your work there's nothing we can offer you. I looked at her, and I wanted to scream. Really!! I had a art class teacher at another place said the same.Turned out she was a school art teacher also.
I just looked at her and replied, "My name is Carlos Bermudez, and you can see my work on the internet and my sight Carlos Bermudez Artist.. I need help still to learn I just want to join a group class for the fellowship and not be judged.. I'm still learning very insecure. I'm just a normal artist and would love to share my knowledge and being a farmer who lost one thing and over whelmed with my farm and needs 😅 to work with other artists and separate from my farm.
At home, I watch TV art classes. No social time, ok Im just I babbling

the longevity and cracking of acryllic has started to come into question recently. I am starting to phase it out of any serious paintings.
Acrylic is basically plastic. Plastic lasts forever, I wouldn't be concerned about it personally.
@@stevemcallister4796 I mean more of as an underpainting and its adhesion to the canvas or boards long term with the bondng of oil on top of it. They finally have some works that have been done in acrylic with some time under their belt. Essentially we have a small sample time wise with Acrylic. Most art ends up int he garbage over time so it may not really matter...LOL

A worrying thing with AI is they are saying it will do everything. And art is already producing decent paintings. At a very reasonable pirice.
Decent prints* they aren't physical paintings. There will always be a place for artists.

Great podcast gentleman and living outside of NYC we will give you a pass Kenneth...Be glad you were not there in the late 70's to mid 80's you would have a whole new meaning of aweful..LOL - it is interesting that there seems to be a lot of artists I keep tabs on heading towards Stoicism.
Composition should be taught from the very beginning, starting with how to fill up the page and not make little sketches lost in a white sheet.
The guest is extremely niave regarding tech an automation always being a net positive. Sure agricultural tech allowed us to feed more people but it also didn’t change the cost of HEALTHY food. A hundred years ago people starved to death. Now people eat themselves to death bc the only thing many US adults can afford is the cheap processed garbage produced by these mega farms. It’s gotten to the point where US life expectancy has reversed markedly in recent years. And those farmers that lost jobs as a result of agricultural innovation. They became tenement dwellers in horrifically unsafe factories. Freedom. I’m not a Freedom guy if it means a corporation can at will roll out an art theft algorithm with no recourse for the parties effected. True freedom is freedom from having to rely on the better nature of the private sector and the ability to have the essentials such as healthcare and housing taken off the table
So you would trust those protective mechanisms to your loving and caring government bureaucrat…. “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help” riiiiight
It sounds like he’s being going down the Libertarian Rabbit Hole. When I was his age decades ago I was a libertarian as well. Then the steel toed boot of reality hit me and I saw how screwed up Objectivism was

Nice talk. On the subject of automation and AI replacing paid human labor, maybe read up on the fundamental contradiction of capitalism and the tendency of the falling rate of profits. There are answers to the dilemma inherent in technological advances.
Caleb Maupin has hours upon hours of discussion addressing that very issue.
