    I’m 0.49 seconds into this video and just had to hit pause to comment…by far, hands down, the best video already for this topic. As a Florida boy I’m excited to learn about driving in the snow vs what I’m used to down here at sea level. Thank you for putting in the time to make such great content!

      @@OverlandPNW - Thanks! Love your videos…even though I drive an F150 down here - lol. I almost purchased the Tundra TRD Pro though…great trucks!
      Taking my F150 up into some east coast mountains this winter and am trying to get prepared now. My 35” Toyo Open Country RTs are not 3PMSF rated, but I do have 4-wheel drive and sufficient ground clearance with a 6” lift…just trying to decide on whether or not I need chains. I’m thinking I’d rather have them and not need them vs needing them and not having them. It’s my understanding you should put chains on before you ‘need them’ - so I’m assuming that’s only if I plan to take the truck off road into the snow, correct? I wouldn’t need chains for normal asphalt driving, would I? If you have a video on when to put chains on, I’d love to watch that! Thanks! Excited to have a better rig than my three brothers that will be on the trip with me. Lol

      @@Financial_Awareness I'm a fan of Ford trucks. I had a F350 that I used to haul a travel trailer and loved it. I completely agree that having chains on hand is smart. It would be a bad situation to need them and not have them especially if you are traveling with family. In snow country, lots of people use chains during a heavy dump on asphalt roads. There are also a lot of highway mountain passes that require "traction devices" during certain times in the winter. What qualifies as a traction devices varies by state law but it is typically an all season tire, mountain snow flake rated tire, chains or studded tires (if allowed). Sounds like a fun trip with your brothers!

      A few things he didn't mention...
      1. don't even try a road like that without another equally capable vehicle and operator and a good reason to go. If conditions worsen you are putting other people and your wallet in harms way to rescue you.
      2. New fallen snow such as we see here can allow some progress but even with good clearance, deep snow being compressed under the vehicle will take the weight off your tires. Then you are hooped. Scoop shovel time.
      3. A little warm weather changes the consistency of the snow dramatically and it becomes much harder to penetrate and gain traction.
      4. Its the wrong tool for the task. Too many people want to pass through "nature" without experiencing it. A snowcat, mountain sled, or backcountry skis are more the ticket.

    Great video! A lot of good information I can use on my travels. I’ve also learned since this is the first time I’ve had a truck, that you can get into four-wheel-drive and low gear to help you get around in a lot of bad weather like snow.

    Great work out there! That was major snow you guys were in! I was up today trying to get to my campsite, but 3 feet of snow was too much for our stock 2020 Cherokee. Pushing snow up hill and was loosing traction, with chains on and aired down to 12. The 30" stock tires on 17" stock wheels just weren't enough to get me there. Cool vid, got to use all your truck toys however a helpful tip when it comes to the fire steel. You put the fire steel rod right up to your tinder and then pull back with the fire steel rod hand keeping the striker hand stationary. NOT push forward with the striker like you did in the video.
    Reasons: 1. you have a good chance of hitting your tinder bundle knocking stuff around and having it bounce away.
    2. You push to much air into the tinder bundle and it could dose your spark.
    3. More sparks hit the target.
    Yes you can still accomplish a fire the way you did it but those who know will know rookie move lol.

    That Nissan is actually a Nissan Patrol...also known as the most capable off road vehicle in history with most off road prizes won in competitions. The Patrol's off road ability is as legendary ar Toyota's reliability. If you want the most off road capable vehicle you take the patrol....if you need the most reliable overland vehicle you take a land cruiser...each have their own specialty.

    • @OverlandPNW
      @OverlandPNW  2 роки тому

      The owner said it was a Nissan Safari. I actually did not know the difference between a Nissan Safari and a Nissan Patrol. It turns out that they are the same thing. The different names (and some different specifications) were used for marketing purposes in different parts of the world. The name "Nissan Safari" was used in the Japanese domestic market. At least that was what I was told by the owner. I did a little internet research and that seemed to check out as correct. Regardless, it was an amazing vehicle. And, I agree that they are known as one of the most capable off-road vehicles in history. I once owned a Nissan Patrol. In fact, I learned to off-road in a 1967 Nissan Patrol. It had manual locking hubs, a hand crank start (no kidding), a manual transmission, and a clutch so hard to depress, I'd swear it came from an old tractor. Not a single modern "traction control" device of any kind. I really miss that rig!

      Chains are one of those topics that off-roaders can debate for hours around the campfire. For off-road backcountry driving, there are videos on why chains work and others on why they don't work. For me, there is no doubt that they really shine when you can get down to some hard pack. I like the idea of carrying a set with me as a safety measure but don't like the hassle of using them unless I really really need to. I am usually with other people and it is easy (and fun ha ha) to get pulled out if I get stuck.

      I lived in Utah for several years and know what you mean. I talked a little bit about snow tires in the comment section. Tires rated with the 3PMSF symbol only means that that the tires’ traction is supposed to be at least 10% superior on medium-packed snow compared to a generic all-season tire. And, that traction is only tested for straight-line acceleration, not breaking or anything else. So, driver experience is always the most important thing when it comes to winter driving.

    Contrary to popular belief, airing a tire down does NOT make it wider!!! Yes, it increases the length of the tread patch on the ground but a 10" wide tread pattern does not magically grow to 11.5" wide by letting air out. It would be like your rig going from 84" wide to 90" wide by taking everything out of the bed......

    • @OverlandPNW
      @OverlandPNW  2 роки тому

      There are definitely some loose semantics at play in the articles about airing down. You are certainly correct that the width of the tread patch does not change. Maybe a better way to say it is that since airing down allows the tire to flex over uneven surfaces, it provides a wider "contact patch." In other words, it allows more of the full "tread patch" to stay in contact with the ground.

    Been snow wheeling in the Mt Hood National Forest since 1968. Always found that a small square point shovel was my best friend. Sometimes called a sand shovel. Makes those divots you speak of go away very quickly. And always carry chains with me as a back up safety device. The chains i use are called ice-breaker chains and can be purchased at Les Schwab. They have small steel bars on the cross sections and grip the snow like the claws on a cougar. Love your red plastic snow boards. Light weight and do not take up much space in your rig. You should do a video explaining common “snow ratings” and what they actually mean. There are actually several snow ratings floating around that mean different things and have varying requirements. Might be interesting.
    #1 on my personal list of snow driving tips would be to know the type of snow conditions you are dealing with because the best tool for the job in snow varies quite a bit depending on the snow you are in. For example, a narrow (fully inflated) tire is actually superior in situations when there is a solid surface below a layer of snow that can be reached before the axles and undercarriage of the car hang up on the snow or if there is enough snow that it just compresses into ice under the tire. Skinny tire, less surface area, so there is more pressure per square inch to push the tire down to the solid surface with better traction. In deep snow with no accessible high traction solid surface the goal is the opposite and you want wide tires or tracks to maximize the surface area supporting the car, decrease the pressure per square inch, and float on top of the powder.
    Great video, I was sad to miss the trip!

    • @OverlandPNW
      @OverlandPNW  2 роки тому +6

      That's a great idea and it is actually a fairly complex subject. It also dovetails nicely with the "science" theme of the current video ha ha! It gets complicated because there are four types of snow crystals, a variety of different categories of snowfall, and several types of snow cover which may or may not be layered. That all distills into different road categories from black ice to powder.

With different layers, different snowflakes, and the fact that the existing layers change with age, there are a huge number of possibilities. In fact, as a long time snow-wheeler, and engineer, I calculated out the number of different possibilities. It comes out to roughly infinity. :)
      There are two things I would add to your list for driving in deep snow (I'm sure you have done both of these, but I think they are counter-intuitive to many people new to snow wheeling):
      1) In most (but not all) snow conditions, if you are plowing along nicely and your vehicle suddenly starts to bog down, BACK OFF on the gas, don't give it more gas. More gas is likely to make it dig in and get stuck, less gas will let it get back on top of the snow.
      2) If the your vehicle comes to a stop, DON"T SPIN YOUR WHEELS. Spinning your wheels will create the divots mentioned. On my manual transmission, I actually hover my left foot over the clutch so I can push it in quickly to stops any wheel spin as fast as possible. If your rig stops moving forward, always try backing up first before spinning the wheels.
      2b) The advanced version of not spinning your wheels is to always cut power JUST BEFORE your vehicle stops moving forward. It takes practice to know just when to cut power, but when done correctly it makes the odds of you being able to back up (instead of being stuck) much greater.
      Again, nearly every snow pack is different, so what works at one time will not work another time. Keep experimenting.
      Here's a video I found interesting on snow flakes. This expert suggests there are 35 different types of snow flakes:

      Hey all from Canada, narrow tires are best in deep snow, the reason is simple, in snow unlike sand, your not trying to redistribute the weight, the snow cannot support your truck, your trying to cut trough the snow, that why large tires are not very efficient in snow they give more resistance and if you deflate it even worst. Over here winter tires are mandatory, so we have a lot of experience in dealing with it.

    Just to correct you about the 3 peaks snow pictogram. For a tire to receive it, it just need to be 10% more effective on tamped surface than a 4 season tire. Also, Chinese companies can apply it on non-winter tire on demand, so yeah... don't rely on it to know if a tire is good in winter condition and do researches about your tires.

What we do is choose any high mountain lake in the Central Cascades that has a relatively long forest service road leading to it (or to a trail head that goes to it). These roads generally go up hill toward the lake and the snow gets progressively more challenging. We always seem to find some fun doing that. By the way, your rafting videos were very cool. Depends on the type of snow and the temperature. the last cold spell we had the snow was like gravel. There have been other times when we just barely got home with new studded tires on ugly snow just around the freezing point. Mind you this is on 17% grades. The other thing is to get into 4wd long before you have to. Don't wait till you are stuck on a hill to remember. Turn off traction control. It is not your friend in snow. It just slows you down and you do have to maintain momentum especially when going up hill. Carry chains. I have had to chain up all four wheels when a wet road changed to glare ice. When you have to pull yourself around your vehicle tires with a snowflake are not enought. Studded tires but they have their own problems.

    Loved the video. I am about 100 miles north of you and love wheeling and snow wheeling near Mt Rainier. I normally wheel as a lone vehicle. I have a few tips. I always, snow wheeling, carry 2 sets of chains. Never used them but peace of mind is great. Trick is not to use them until you need to. This way you do not go further in than you should. Another trick is to always travel up hill on the way in, if you can. Gravity will help you get out.
    I love my army shovel. I can "rake" the snow out instead of depending on gravity to keep the snow on the shovel. Square shovels and or pointed shovels the snow can slide off as you try to shovel out. Yes it is a short handled shovel which means you maybe on your knees. This means you should carry some sort of barrier, plastic or otherwise. Something you should carry anyway. Great thing is it does not take up much room.
    Final thing. Tire pressure. My YJ weighs in about 3500 with 2 people and a trailer, TC-3. I came up with this weight going to the dump and they scale you going in and out. I am guessing that the trailer weighs at least 500 lbs. So I weigh about 3000 lbs with 2 people. Matt's Jeep, the yellow banana from Matt's towing. weighs in over 4000 lbs. He ran 8 psi in his tires. So given the tire rating of my tires and weight I run 17 front and 25 rear normally. I could run lower but this I believe this is safe for me and have the best control on the highway. Off road, I believe that 8 psi is more than a safe pressure and believe I could go down to 6 psi and still be somewhat safe. This is me and me knowing my vehicle. As Overland said, you need to figure out what is best for you and your vehicle. Get your vehicle weight, that way you know what is safe for you.

    Great video!!! I encountered some moderately heavy snow today while on a 4 lane highway. The temp was in the low 20s. The roads became snow covered quickly and covered by 2 to 3 inches of snow (my guess). I drove in 2WD for a while but eventually switched to 4WDH. Later I added the MTS (sand, dirt, mud lowest setting) and drove the rest of the way in 4WDH and MTS lowest setting. Made it home with no problems. My question is, even though the lowest MTS is for sand, dirt, mud, do you think it was appropriate for snow as well?

      Well done! Yes, I think the MTS Mud & Sand setting is generally the best for snow. To my knowledge, the word "snow" is only used once in the MTS section of the 4Runner Manual. On page 258 of the 2018 4Runner Manual, there is an MTS Terrain Type chart. It has a line for "Deep Snow." That chart shows the Mud & Sand setting as the preferred MTS setting for "Deep Snow." I have never found a speed limit recommendation in the Toyota Manual for 4WDH but I think 55 mph is a good one. Hope that helps. Cheers!

    Higher PSI is actually better if there's hard pack and ice. You don't want floatation in that scenario.
    Also 3 peak tires which are usually an AT tire differ from full winter tires, which are not very aggressive for deep snow.

    I love snow wheeling and have been doing it for over 40 years. I am also a tire junky and I have been selling them for over 35 years. I am always looking for the best snow tire for deep snow. Snow varies from location to location. I live in Wyoming and we have some very dry snow at times and it is horrible for any type of traction! I normally start with my Jeep at 10 psi and go down from there. My tire of choice is Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ in a 35x12.50x15. I am old school and I love my 15 inch wheels because I can get a very long tread contact patch and still have sidewall left. Several weeks ago I was elk hunting and we had about 8 inches of fresh snow, the snow was dry and what I like to call sugar snow, won't pack, can't make a snow ball and the only effective way to conquer it is with tires chains. I use ice bar chains that effectively turn my 35 inch tires into 38 inches. I spent several hours trying to recover some elk in high winds and close to two foot deep drifts that the wind would fill in my tracks every 15 minutes, horrible pain in the ***. It was nowhere near as fun as wheeling in heavy wet snow that packs good under the tires. I usually find that 10 psi is just a starting point and my Jeep does really well between 4 and 5 psi with a good wrinkle. I also have an atv with tracks that is a lot of fun but in the super cold months, normally January, the snow will be of the sugar variety and there are days when you can't even make progress with tracks or even snow shoes. Go home and wait for some warmer weather. My other must have for snow wheeling is traction adding devices in both axles. Right now I run air lockers, but for years I ran detroits front and rear. A tire that isn't pulling is a liability!

      I've heard great things about the Mickey Thompsons. The long tread contact patch vs wide contact patch is something that a lot of people do not consider when making a tire choice. It makes a difference. Great input. Thanks for the comment!
