Having the pressure off for qualifying by January is huge.
I ran my first BigC in 2024. In November '23 I ran an easy run marathon in support of my wife for her first marathon. At the time I didn't have Comrades plans yet, but we ran 4h45 which ended up being me qualified for Comrades by the time I decided to go for it. By January when things got serious and I had to run for seeding it was just good to have the qualifying pressure dealt with.
Now, for my second Comrades, I've learnt from this and got a qualifier in late October. Not the result I wanted, but the pressure is off again. I can use the races avaliable differently and manage how they impact on the Comrades training better.
The value of being qualified before January was one of the biggest insights I got by doing the Comrades myself. Something I would have never understood otherwise.
I'm very very glad there are people like (some of my running friends too) who got this nice surprise of suddenly being qualified and having that pressure released. So valuable...
Here's to better seeding for everyone!
