You should also watch Floor Jansen (current singer of Nightwish) doing Phantom Of The Opera with Henk Poort, who'd played the Phantom in the Netherlands, on the dutch TV show "Beste Zangers". Henk Poort also had a guest appearance on Nightwish's 2022 show in Amsterdam, when they played this song for the first time in 17 years. Both available on YT.
@@ReactADHD Marko didn't sing on all the Nightwish songs but he did a duet with Tarja on the song, The Siren, from the same concert. Another epic performance.
The great thing about this song is that it did not come out of thin air. Tuomas (the keyboard player) is the leader of the band and writes and/or arranges about 95% of the band's music. Tuomas wrote Andrew LLoyd Webber and asked permission to "Play around " with this particular song from the musical Phantom of the Opera. Webber gave him permission to do so and this arrangement is what he came up with. Andrew Lloyd Webber loved it when he saw it. Remember that his background is in Rock Operas/Musicals such as Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. This particular performance was in Helsinki, Finland after the band had been on a worldwide tour and was the last performance of the tour. One of the most significant things about this performance is that it was the last one with Nightwish for the female lead singer, Tarja. Tuomas gave her a letter after the performance to let her know that the band had voted her out of the band and that she could spend full time either working with another band or on her solo career that was interfering with her performance with Nightwish.
Hello Ollie [ @ReactADHD ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Helsinki in 2005, then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tar-rya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile). There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). In 1996, mastermind and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen founded Nightwish in Finland. The band name is the title of one of their first songs. The female lead singer Tarja Turunen shapes the sound of the band and of symphonic metal. In 2001, she wants to leave the band because she wants to finish her studies in Germany in 2002/03. Tuomas sees the band at the end. The band is able to persuade Tarja to continue after her studies, but on her terms. In 2005, the band accuses her of having turned into a diva. Immediately after this concert, she is fired in the dressing room. What was unthinkable in 2001 had become thinkable. The following year, the band is looking for a successor via audition. There is another version with the current, third and longest-serving singer and an opera/musical singer: Nightwish - The Phantom Of The Opera (ft. Henk Poort) (LIVE) Bassist Marko Hietala is the best Phantom ever for me. He sings the way the Phantom feels inside. Before Nightwish, Marko founded the heavy metal band Tarot with his brother, where he is the co-lead singer with his brother: TAROT - Wings Of Darkness (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) In 2001 he came to Nightwish via another band and shaped the band for 20 years as a "background singer". There are a few songs where he has the lead. At this concert, a Pink Floyd cover that I think is better than the original: Nightwish - High Hopes (End Of An Era DVD) [HD] Over the years, he developed a depression and in 2021 he resigned during a bout of depression. He promised never to make music again, but quickly broke his word. He is currently touring the world with his prog metal and Tarja as co-headliner. A return is not out of the question, but increasingly unlikely. In my opinion, Marko and Nightwish seem to be getting used to the current situation: MARKO HIETALA - Left On Mars (feat. Tarja Turunen) (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) Evanescene is more nu metal or alternative. Amy has the classic vocals in common (which is why the comparison with the third singer Floor keeps coming up), but the epic element is missing. Other Symphonics: VISIONS OF ATLANTIS - Pirates Will Return (Official Live Video) | Napalm Records Epica - Chasing The Dragon LIVE Retrospect 2013 HD Within Temptation - The Reckoning (feat. Amy Lee from Evanescence) live at the Worlds Collide Tour
