    Why VIT B COMPLEXS act as co-enzyme ?

    • @EntriMed
      @EntriMed  Рік тому +2

      Well.. initially among the vitamin b complexes, the first one to be discovered was thiamine... As the deficiency of thiamine caused Beri Beri, thiamine was called 'Vitamin B'... There was no number assigned as such. It was later found that thiamine also participated in several biochemical reactions and behaved as coenzymes by increasing the activity of enzymes and thereby increasing the rate of these biochemical reactions.
      Later, a couple of compounds were discovered by various scientists... These compounds/substances also behaved like coenzymes and were found to be required for various enzymatic reactions in the body.. also the deficiency of these substances ,which were later categorized as 'vitamins', led to certain deficiency disorders.
      Since these vitamins had similar physical and chemical properties to thiamine and they were all called as Vitamin B complexes ..
      Now if you notice the numbering of Vitamin B complexes... The numbering is not continuous or sequential..
      We have Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12... There is no B4, B8,B10 and B 11... So the numbers that are not listed as part of 'Vitamin B complexes' , are the compounds that were earlier taught to have similar properties as thiamine but then later it was confirmed that they didn't have similar properties..so they dropped from the list of Vitamin B complexes. Hence the missing numbers. So, in a simple way - The vitamins clubbed under 'Vitamin B complexes' were known to coenzymes first even before they were called Vitamin B complexes. Just because they had similar physical and chemical properties, they were collectively categorized as Vitamin B complexes.
